"Lysias was the leading speechwriter of his generation and one of the finest and most deceptive storytellers of all time. As a noncitizen resident in Athens, he could take no direct part in politics, but his speeches, written for clients to deliver in court, paint vivid pictures of various private and public disputes. In this speech, Euphiletus, the speaker, has caught a man called Eratosthenes committing adultery with his wife and pleads justification for having killed him. The world that Lysias creates for us here is extraordinarily vivid, creating a version of the story that makes Euphiletus' behavior appear to be what the laws "order" (whereas in fact they merely "permit"), and indeed turning the case from a prosecution of Euphiletus by Eratosthenes' relatives for homicide into a prosecution of Eratosthenes by "the laws" for adultery."
