Oh Pierre, I love your enthusiasm and passion for this endeavor !!! I just finished the house and now I get to begin restoration of my first Mercedes. At 68, I am so excited to begin this journey. Looking forward to speaking with you again, as needed, to make my 76 450sl road worthy again.
Totally relatable. People just don't respect the work, love and sweat that went into a car. I generally hate selling stuff - I always regret it later. Living the hoarder life now 🙂
also cannot imagine to sell my beloved 6.9, every year bit by bit I am improving the car and only classic experts are allowed to touch it. It takes a lot of gas and overcompensates that with way more Joy of riding than suffering of low miles per gallon. Just in these electric vehicle days and Germanys Automobile industry is in its biggest crises ever, it is even more important to save the classic treasures! ...Regards from Germany, Björn
I only started to appreciate my 129 properly once I started my own mechanics on my driveway. I think every classic owner must be able to undertake a basic service on their car. Most of the fun and excitment has been fixing my classic myself
I worked for Benz and quite in 2000 to go into entrepreneurship but I’ve been restoring 70s/80s cars in between and what you say is 100% spot on. I appreciate all your videos and I’d like to meet you one day since I’m in FL too (Sarasota)
You are spot on when you talked about the money people have to pay for repairs. We have a saying in the Netherlands:” good advice is expensive “. People should feel it in their wallet.
Some great lines in this post esp the one about you only appreciate the car that you have put a lot of time and effort or money into restoring - and no buyer is ever going to recognise that effort. I regret selling every car I have restored and then sold ! Keep up the great work !
I purchased my 300cd that has high mileage but it was very well taken care of. The guy that owned it was reluctant to sell it as he didn’t want it ruined. He had offers from people that wanted to convert it to run in WVO. He absolutely didn’t want it to die a that way. I stay in contact with the guy and share my rolling restoration of the car. He is so happy that I love the car like he did.
Great rant!!! I appreciate all my classic Mercedes because I work on them. I just wish I had more room...so we're looking at building. Nothing takes place.of these wonderfully built cars!
I really do understand what you are saying. I’ve often thought WHO will get my car when I’m no longer here. I inherited from my father in law an original owner mint 95 E300 Diesel and I quickly realized you really have to be cognizant and learn to understand the car. First Mercedes for me. I’ve put significantly money into the car wanting to make it as close to OEM perfect as possible. It may never be 100% but.its been fun and I’ve learned a ton about these W124’s but they cannot be neglected. If something fails, I fix it myself or take it to my trusted Mercedes mechanic immediately. Point is, it gets fixed and is not put off. You are never sure if the next owner will do this. Pierre is right, if you are expecting a Camry, these are not your cars but if you want to learn and care for one of the worlds finest cars, a classic Mercedes is the ticket. Thanks Pierre for all you do.
I agree. Unfortunately there’s always that situation to where you did all the right things and still end up screwed. I hit a pot hole that was covered in rain water and it sent me into a telephone pole. Damaged the entire passenger side of my 560SL. Still fixing it.
Pierre, 47 years as a euro tech, 31 in my own business. Here is how I did it. Bought 5 or 6 cars to fix up and sell every year. Did well with them. Consigned them to a used car dealer friend in a town 90 miles from me. Sale fee was 800 per car. The dealer can arrange financing, and can get more money for the car than I ever could. Never saw a single one of them again. Try it!
I appreciate your rant. I can totally relate. Every car I ever sold went to hell, except a classic Alfa Romeo GT I sold to my cousin. All the rest are just destroyed. I am keeping everything now, not because I am materialistic, but because I feel alone trying to preserve precious things.
Pierre, i felt this in my soul! I own a small fleet of vintage Mercedes myself (5) that i maintain. For my own selfish reasons, i wish you had set up shop here in Texas. Lol.
I just spent almost £3000 on my w140 that i got for £5000 a few years ago. Its not about being financially viable its about the ❤. On a mission to keep it runnin as long as possible. Keep up the amazing work pierre. ❤
@thebulgarianguy8461 ohh over the 5 years iv had it iv chnaged almost everything i cud while i could find the parts. Also got a garage full of nos parts.. till the grave
Fire! People RARELY, appreciate your car. Sometimes they actually do and it makes me feel so ALIVE! I’m two years into ownership and it is such a kick when people know what it is and what it takes to own one. Thanks for all your rants and concepts!
I partially agree with @omcara in the comments. We all know your level of passion and we appreciate it. There are those who will never get it, and it is not our job to "make them get it." Don't let it make you sick inside so I am OK with the rant.
Ha! That was awesome. That’s how I’ve ended up with a few diesels for cheap. People get sick of putting money in them, because they don’t know what they are doing. I’m not saying I’m great at fixing them, but I learn how. I’ve done most jobs on them and I’m learning every day. I love it! I can’t sell them either.
Hey Pierre until someone has owned, worked on and driven with absolute respect for what Mercedes Benz represented in their classics they just won't get it. Over the past few years my 107 046 has received either new or professionally rebuilt front subframe, whole cooling system, fuel injectors, pump etc, starter motor, rebuilt alternator and more. I've been offered ridiculous amounts of money to part with the car but that won't be happening anytime soon.
I hate selling cars too because I want it to go to the right person. At the end of the day, sometimes it just has to happen but it pains me. I don't think I've ever sold a car and been happy about it.
I get it and totally agree. I’m a bad guy for not loaning my truck to people. I do enjoy allowing my children to experience my old cars, and I see how they appreciate them. I don’t like selling my cars either. You’re a definitely the person I would want to buy a W123 300TD from. Let me know if you have one to sell and I promise I would never sell it.
Even though I own what is possibly the most underrated, underappreciated and excessively hated on C-Class generation, the w203, I think it's on its way to becoming as celebrated of a classic as the w202 and w201 which is why I don't want to let it go. It was the last C-Class to be designed under the oversight of the late great Bruno Sacco.
I get it, yet they are called accidents because generally, they are. Unless you're selling a museum piece, the car is going to be driven and bad shit sometimes happens. I fully agree that the "...why didn't you...." folks are the ones who blame others for their misfortunes.
My heart beats faster when I see a W126 SEL or SEC but do I want to drive that or my new Mercedes....I guess it takes extra space and extra money to have a classic car.
I have a SLK 280. Not a classic but almost 20 years old and it’s my first MB and I love it so much. After owning it for almost 2 years now I have done many of the upgrades and repairs myself and the car is as “right” as I can make it. It’s my daily driver and I’ll never sell it. People come up to me in my driveway and at gas stations and make offers to buy it. Lord please don’t let me get in an accident.
Hold onto those cars Pierre and concentrate on reproducing so that you'll have your own little pool of intelligent, worthy future owners. That probably also goes for the rest of us who watch these videos. And for those of us who are single, I propose that we save the world by finding classic Mercedes owners of the opposite sex, then breeding like rabbits. All this could be organized from a corner of Pierre's HQ; a few square feet dedicated to "Hedary's Classic Internet Dating Service, where finding your match is as simple as W123".
Hey Pier I’d like to ask your opinion. I have an opportunity to buy a 1961 190SL that’s already been shelled and body restored, everything is there but all apart and apparently the engine needs to be gone through, otherwise everything else is original and in good shape. They want 45k What do you think as a project to get into? I was with Benz till 2000 as a tech but took an entrepreneurship path for a living, still have my tools and I do work on a few cars that I do have, two 126s (SEL and an SEC) plus an e9 and e10 BMWs complete restorations.

Dude you got to learn to let go. I too restore classic cars, once the sale is done it's done & gone. I don't care if they wrap it around a tree. Appreciation comes from the buyer paying what you were willing to let it go for. It's no longer yours. it's theirs. I'll say it the way my dad said it " It beats walking" If you have this perspective of need in our modern society, you will appreciate it.

Money is too easy for many nowadays. The sweat, labor and tears is a true currency.
