    That would be an amazing test to do if you were to buy a factory rifle, print some crazy small groups, and send that rifle to Backfire to test/review. Then the pressure is all on Backfire to be able to get the same results, and put his “ability” to the test.

    I forgot who said it, but the same time you start teaching your children to not touch hot stoves or put their fingers in the light socket, is the same time you should start teaching them about gun safety.

    I have seen so many people show up at the rang with a brand new gun out of the box and burn it down, chasing shots with their scopes. Also, shooting un-suppressed is like drinking a bud light with..well you know. 😂 great information. Thanks.

    Gun safes...never seen a good one except Sturdy Safes. They make some good ones. Legitimate weight steel...and they use real insulation...not drywall...but even then only buys time if you spray the hose on that part of the house for fire...but in terms of breaking into them...they are stout, unlike Liberty Safes and most others.

    Someone told me that shooting cheap ammo through a precision barrel with less tolerance can damage the barrel. That didn't make sense to me, but he was saying it would foul it up and may have more of likelihood for bullets that bounce. I know that sounds ridiculous, but obviously within amounts that make sense inside a barrel and chamber.

    20 rd break in, do additional break in shooting groups with different ammo. Get a baseline, and check groups again with a few shooters. This might settle the gun vs shooter accuracy?

    If you want a easy test group, Bergara, Savage, Ruger. If you want a challenging test group, Mossberg ( backfire TV cryptonite) , Remington, CVA Cascade. Some food for thought. Looking forward to future vids/podcast.

      Newer Remingtons are doing much better had a bergara once in 300 PRC did their "break in " couldn't shoot under one inch with reloads or factory and with other shooters bought a new CVA cascade in 300 PRC haven't had problems shoots half moa with 3 shots and they are same company just a bad gun from beginning

    I am probably getting ahead of the plan but if you do the hunting gun accuracy test, will it be with the extensive break-in process? Obviously, you would do the other things. Torque check, cleaning, etc.

  • @jefferyking116
    @jefferyking116 Рік тому +1

    My process is much the same except I don't take the gun apart. I may try that. I do clean the heck out of them. I also use the same 20-shot shoot one and then clean process. I also like your idea about writing down a lot of the specs. I use a gun log and it has a space for other random data. Maybe I'll put some of that info in there.

    Will they all have the same barrel profile ?
    They should all be the same calibre and same ammo selection.
    They should all be shot one after the other for each group to allow for environmental changes etc throughout the testing process.
    A minimum of at least two different shooters to even out / show shooter effects.
    Three packets of cheap ammo through each one before recording results.
    Average group size of 10 groups ( doesn’t matter 3 or 5 ) but each rifle must be given the same chance
    to sink or swim .
    I understand the silencer thing , but it could potentially have an effect on results achieved and for the sake of fairness a couple of groups should be shot naked to see if there is a difference .
    Cool project 👍

    I think your idea about testing would be as valid a test as people are willing to sit through. A caveat, perhaps two loads of each from 3 ammo manufacturers. One lower quality or with known lower QC, and another with allegedly higher QC.

  • @jamesboyce9510

    I was never taught about barrel break-in, this has all been very eye opening for me, I recently built a 6 ARC with a ballistic advantage barrel on the AR platform, and it shot like poop, and at around 80-100 rounds it started tightening up, got it sighted in and haven't shot it since, out of fear of bumping it or something haha. I think its time to break it back out and do some evaluating and logging, I don't think I'm going to go as autistic as wade, but I see the merit in all of this info.

    Wade is matching ammo to barrel twist really as important as it used to be. I feel like modern ammo is just better than it used to be. 6arc with a 7 twist barrel. 20 years ago I would have said you’ll need to to shoot in the heavier end. My ARC will shoot sub moa with 108s and 65s?

      , primarily running to heavy of a projectile in a slow twist. Because there’s still slow twist legacy cartridge chambered rifles out there and lots of new heavy for caliber projectile offerings.

    I do have a question when it comes to torque on rings and bases. I generally go back a day after I mount the scope and torque again. Am I being too OCD? Or would you agree with that? I do get a tiny amount of movement, but nothing drastic. It's a practice I learned in the refineries because the screws tend to relax after a given amount of time.

    What’s your opinion on Howa 1500 barreled actions as far as quality, function, reliability, and accuracy potential? I have a sample size of 1, and it is a heavy barrel slowish twist .223. It did shoot amazing once I found the factory loads it liked. The rifle I ordered however is a sporter contour stainless .308 in an HS precision stock.

  • @dandexinventor

    I did not know break-in could be that extensive. Most of the time I followed mfr guidelines and shot 3 to 4 boxes of my choice ammo. Just don't take joker friends during this process if a rough sighting-in is in parallel with break in cause they will shoot on your target to f with you and be laughing under their breath while you scratch your head and shoot a lot of ammo for their entertainment. That same "friend" loosened my scope rings just enough that it felt tight to the twist check, but recoil shifted it.
    Funny thing, I have not seen that guy for many years and most of my shooting issues went away when I moved to a different state. While speaking to a third member of our shooting group I found out the joker had been messing with me every trip out to the desert in more than one way. I think I wasted hundreds of rounds and even gave a rifle away to our mutual friend cause I thought it was not a good barrel, but he was confident he could work with it (plus he and his wife just had twins and could not afford anything). I gave him the rifle with a nice Leupold scope and all the ammo I had. He did better with it than I did and I began to question my skills.
    That rifle had a B.O.S.S. on it. It worked too! Even with a crappy factory trigger, after tuning the BOSS, it shot 1 MOA in good conditions. It was the first rifle I had ever purchased and based on what I learned in the Marines. Wait for it...300 Win Mag Mod 70. I was determined to learn what it took to become a 1000 yard shooter (up from 500 meters in the Marines). I look back and know that was not the right rifle to hone skills on, but live and learn.
    Anayway, even my worst day out shooting, or trying to, left me with a smile on my face and looking foward to the next thing I could do with this great thing I was now hooked on. That was the early 90's.
    My new wife asked me how much money I had spent on shooting in my life up to that point. I told the truth, "All of it" (while smiling).

      It's all luck of the draw with barrels. Not every piece of steel cut from a blank is equal. I've had just as many rifles shoot better than ones I've "broken in"

    • @dandexinventor
      @dandexinventor Рік тому

      @@weldmonger1560 So, I have a great barrel which shot great from round one, it's a Criterion .223 Wilde 18" chrome lined but it is factory hand lapped. When I got it, I bore scoped it and could tell a big difference in the superior finish and it was on par with a Proof SS barell I have. If, on the other hand, I have a barrel which does not shoot so well can I lap it after a few hundred rounds and expect a better performance? (If by chance you know).
      Thanks
