You changed my life today. I used to lay down my underpainting with pastel. Spray that with fix then move to soft stick and actually do the painting. NOW I'l watercolor my underpainting, let is dry, gesso it an then ....... I have SO MUCH really good WC paper just sitting there.
I was about to get rid of all my soft pastels and pan pastels, but then I learned about using 80 grit sandpaper to turn watercolor paper into pastel paper. I'm new to art in general, and had some cheap watercolor paper, so I tried 100 grit on the cheap watercolor paper, and now I’ve decided to keep my pastels. Since I’m so inexperienced, I tried sanding some construction paper I had, and it made the pastels work on it well enough for me to practice some basics as well. Neither of these are for quality long lasting art pieces, but good enough for me to learn on.
A man who makes his own pastel paper is a force to be reconed with, no doubt, but there is one other thing you are good at making...videos. I have noticed the Da Vinci Resolve icon in your vids lately. Maybe a video on that some day...
Hi Richard, Thanks. You must have a sharp eye. I actually use Hitfilm Express for all my videos. I have Davinci Resolve but never seem to have the time to get to grips with it.
Very colorful. I heard you should use gloves with pastels, because the small pigment particles can get into your finger tip pores. I have never tried pastels, it looks like fun.
Hi Rick, Pastels are definitely not the friendliest medium to use especially when it comes to health and safety, the amount of dust generated is alarming.
Thank you for sharing!! Beautiful color, and very creative piece! 🎉🎉🎉

Thank you very much. Love the colors. I always associated the word pastels with soft, muted color. I learn everyday.
HI Greg, Thanks. It's the vibrant colours that attract me to pastels
that was fun
What kind of pastel you have? Oil or soft pastel or both? Thanks for sharing
how did the piece handle when you took it off the board?
Enjoyed the video. Thanks
Thank you! Exactly the info I was looking for. 😊
Definitely cost effective Steve compared to Pastelmat that i use. Seems to hold layers well also.
I will give this a go.
Thanks for the video. Regards

Very nice. It's interesting that you did all those layers without a fixative in between. Are those soft or hard pastels?
I use this technique exactly.
But as soon as I sprayed fixative the pastle pigments became grainy 🤔
Unfortunately that happens whenever you use fixative. It always makes it darker and grainier
