I listened to the audiobook of Lonesome Dove in 2023 - it was my first time experiencing the story, and I absolutely loved it! The narration was outstanding.
I feel similarly about Demon Copperhead. It didn't my make favourite or best list. I was disappointed that we didn't actually get to go the ocean with Demon after it being a recurring plot point. The ending felt like a huge let down to me, even though the rest of it was just ok to read.
I also read Station Eleven in 2023 and loved it! I'm glad I read it, and I've since recently read Sea of Tranquility which I loved more! I didn't have a copy of The Glass Hotel til just this week (so I'm reading them out of publishing order). But from what I can gather Sea of Tranquility is more connected to The Glass hotel than Station Eleven. I didn't spot the link (if any) to Station Eleven except the pandemic element.

    • @EveningReader
      @EveningReader  5 місяців тому +1

I bet Lonesome Dove would be wonderful on audio! I don't know that Station Eleven and the other two are really a series, so the order probably doesn't matter. I'm just curious about the connections...

Lonesome Dove wasn't even on my radar, but now I have to read it! I also loved Tom Lake! It made me want to find a production of Our Town to see. Loved Lucy by the Sea, too ;-) I've never read the others in the series, but now I want to go back and read those, too. Lucy is just so normal and authentic. She feels like someone you actually know in real life.

What a fantastic list. I loved American Wife by Curtis Sittenfeld, I also liked Rodham but thought the former was even better. Tom Lake was one of my top reads in 2023 - I wish I had listened to it on audio as how wonderful that it was read by Meryl Streep!

I had not heard of most of these books and your descriptions of the stories I found interesting and so many of them are now on my TBR. I read Poisonwood Bible, which I know if a favorite of many, but it was not a book for me. I realized with that reading too that Kingsolver was not an author for me and with the many reviews of Demon, both good and bad, I knew I would not read it. First time in your channel. Amazing books. I added some of these titles to my wish list. I only read one book from your list, The Bandit Queen but it was not my favorite. However, I really liked the humor tone in the novel I think it was well done. I don’t know Station Eleven was part of a kind of series. Thank you for that information because I can read the books in order. I’m planning to read them later this year as part of a Readathon I’m participating.
Your reviews were amazing, well summarized. I was interested in books because of those descriptions. I’m glad I watched the video. I was looking what to watch for best books of 2023 and saw your channel, just like that, in a whim, and I’m so glad I did it, 🤗I also want to read the book The Stromness Dinner and you mentioned Shawn The Book Maniac and I follow him.
I will no say my favorites because most of them, are fantasy but I really liked Woman Eating by Claire Khoda, about a vampire, a different story to address social issues. Book was recommended by Britta Bohler. I also liked a book from Maggie O’Farrell and Tiffany McDaniel.

Lots of good books. I really liked The Bandit Queens as well. I loved the cover. There was one “ten-dollar” word that she used on at least four occasions that made me chuckle as it just felt like she really liked the word and wanted to use it even if a simpler word would have sufficed. I do that all the time too and am constantly revising my legal briefs as a result. 😊. Happy New Year!

I enjoyed Station Eleven. I lent it out and now I forget to who I lent it to! ! I also have the her other books on the towering tbr. You Ms Evening Reader convinced me to get Say Nothing just now. I have been finding non fiction more and more appealing these days. I am reading G-Man about J. Edgar Hoover (physical copy) which I became interested in after reading Killers of the Flower Moon. I am also listening to Prequel by Rachel Madow and am finding the stories are following the same historical events just from different vantage points. Maybe I will have to finish Romantic Comedy. I am on page 79 and was kind of meh about the book. I won't even mention the lot of fiction books that you mentioned which are on my shelf just waiting patiently for me. • @MJ-in-Canada

If your library doesn’t purchase “The Stromness Dinner,” ask them for an interlibrary loan. It can take up to 6 six weeks (or longer) for them to find the book from another library system but if it’s a book that you’re keen to read, then the wait is worth it. Also, an interlibrary loan is usually a free service and if the lending library does charge, the fee is usually low.
I’ve just downloaded “The Stromness Dinner” from Everand but as you may already know, that requires a paid subscription.

Thank you for such an informative and entertaining video. I absolutely agree with you in regard to the Kingsover book. I loved Demon's voice, but I wasn't emotionally connected to him. It didn't help that there were direct narrative links to David Copperfield that meant that major plot points were telegraphed spoiling the surprise. However, that said I still enjoyed it and gave it 4 stars. I'm really interested in reading Ninth Street Women. Women and marginalised communities often suffer reduced reputation over time, so it will be good to slot them back in to their time and maybe see if there are any exhibitions of their work I can go see. Yes you are right too much detail is often a sign of the lack of editing. I thought the same of No Modernism without Lesbianism too. Wow, I've put so many of your suggestions on my list. I had a number on there already. I look forward to your next video.

I hope you'll let me know what you thought of Ninth Street Women if you decide to pick it up. It's an investment but so worth it. If you use an e-reader, I recommend that version because the physical copy is HUGE and they put all the art at the back, so it's difficult to flip to. Much easier to look up the artwork online. Depending on where you're located, you can see their works in New York, Chicago, Washington DC, Denver, or San Francisco.

Oooh, you've got some great books on this list, Priscilla! My favorite of Laird Hunt's books is In the House in the Dark of the Woods. I read it years ago and, strangely, I believe I only gave it three stars , but it's one of those books that has stayed on my mind ever since, and I would very much like to reread it someday.
I'm so glad you picked up Parini Shroff's book. I'm with you in thinking that the humor worked (stories, even dark ones, need levity to balance them out). I'm keen to read whatever she publishes next.

Hannah, I'm sorry to say, In the House in the Dark of the Woods was a DNF for me. The writing was absolutely beautiful, but the fairytale aspect just didn't work for me. But he's one of those writers who is always trying something new, so I definitely plan to pick up his other books! I'm happy you agree about the humor in Bandit Queens. I was sort of surprised it was an issue for people.

New to your channel and love it. I felt the same about Demon Copperhead. Clearly an amazing book but I felt like I was skating on the surface the entire time and just couldn’t reach that emotional attachment I need from a book.
Bandit Queens didn’t make it to the short list unfortunately - for me it was the winner. Humour absolutely belongs in this book - it is part of the strength of these women and prevents them from being defined solely in terms of what they have been through.
Adored Station 11. Believe it or not I hadn’t heard of it! I picked it up for a reading prompt of a book with a character who shares your first name.

Based on your regard (and mine is similar) for 9th Street Women, you may find the memoir Everything/Nothing/Someone of interest. It’s written by Alice Carrier who is the daughter of Jennifer Bartlett and a German actor. Bartlett is perhaps one of the most successful women artists of the 70s and 80s and rests on the shoulders of those 9th Street artists. The daughter grew up in untold wealth, privilege and opportunity in a fabulous warehouse artist studio property in the Village. But she’s also deeply troubled and there’s lots of trauma she endures and overcomes. It easily could have been a Mommy Dearest book, but it’s not - far from it. She is a very smart, well educated, lyrically beautiful writer who’s been through some intense stuff, much that she would agree was much of her own doing, but she’s a survivor and there’s a redemptive arc for her and both her parents. Just really impressive writing. If, for me it has any flaw, I would have liked more about the art world and mother’s work, but I’m the person who loved the overdone details in 9th Street.
Also, The Slip is a fascinating book about the loosely affiliated array of artists who worked in warehouse and old buildings in lower Manhattan near Coenties Slip. They are a group coming right after and somewhat simultaneously with 9th Street women, many LGBTQ. It’s a much shorter and consise book, tightly edited, but amazing and revelatory about mid century artists during their struggle before breaking through.

Hi Priscilla, I know exactly what you mean: a well-written, award-winning book is not necessarily a favorite book. You gave a wonderful example about Demon Copperhead. I haven't read it but the author's work doesn't resonate. I can admire a book but if I can't feel emotion for the characters, it won't be a favorite. I noticed on GoodReads we have read many of the same books this year. Foster was my second favorite book of the year.I must read "Say Nothing" and Zorrie sounds interesting too. Aloha friend.

If you like her writing - I feel like there are two other authors who fit on the spectrum with her - more plot leaning is Adrift by Brideau (near future climate fiction, amnesia, set in British Columbia; my fave read for 2023)), then more literary leaning is Charlotte McConaghy.
