The 3DO version really has bad AES/MVS BGM recordings, I had too adjust the levels constantly to avoid clipping not to mention the low-fi SFX.

I'd play and value my 3DO a bit more. I really think it's one of the great underrated consoles of all time.

3DO is my favorite system from the 90s.
L1Games the problem is the 3DO version is a beefed up SNES port. The 3DO audio capabilities is equal to the Neo Geo CD.
IDK Neo Geo CD looks to have much better visuals... just pause at 3:47 and then jump 5 seconds ahead, then back... pretty big difference in the characters, and HUD... only the background looks closer.
3DO had some amazing titles for sure. Loved playing it!
I had the 3DO version in 1997 and got a NeoCD and Samurai Shodown in 1999. Sadly I had sold the 3DO so I wasn't able to compare them. But I remember being surprised about the extra cutscenes and upper borders on some stages that had been omitted from the 3DO as I had assumed it was a perfect port.
Sad thing about SS on the Neo Geo was that if you had a English system like I did, the game was censored and there was no blood code. That ruined the NeoCD port. I also missed the fantastic credits sequence from the 3DO.
The 3DO is obviously using the original MVS and AES music.
+Joe Cimmarrusti actually now that you mentioned it, the audio for Neo Geo ports on other systems was always terrible. I remember the KoF games and metal slug that I would import in the late 90s for my modded psx always sounded muffled. I seem to recall a review for a SNK game on psx that even said the game audio sounded like it was sampled by standing next to the MVS with a tape recorder. It wasn't really until Dreamcast that they started getting Neo ports right. Sadly all the early USA ps2 ports were butchered with SNKs illogical and inconsistent censorship of their games in the American market. I remember being so PO'ed about the censorship in the KoF 00/01 that I actually wrote SNK Japan an email about how ridiculous it was to censor cartoon blood when there are games like GTA3 out.
NeoGeo CD version sounds awesome but loading times were terrible even when playing it on the NeoGeo CD-Z. 3DO version seems decent but definitely not worth the $700 to buy a 3DO for. It's a good thing SNK put everything from both of these on the Samurai Shodown Anthology for Wii and PS2, that way we don't have to suffer through long load times and at the same time get all the good quality graphics, soundtracks, and gameplay.

No, the problem was the price is was sold at was beyond ridiculous.
They licensed the technology to everybody, and the game developers did not have to pay royalties to them, so they had to set the hardware prices really high to make some profit.

I'm getting sick of seeing all these comments bashing the 3DO I just earlier this year got a hold of a 3DO. and I'm so happy that was a console I have wanted for years so few people have even heard of it. heck a lot of people I've known have never even heard of the Neo Geo. I would love to have a Neo Geo with it wasn't for the price tag. but with that said the Panasonic three-year-old has some really good games some good fighting games. in my view the 3DS Port of Super Street Fighter 2 turbo is the superior version of Street Fighter 2. I Love the remix tracks of everyone's stage theme and also fighting a Akuma. I'm in the process of getting the 3DS version of this game. I currently only have Samurai shodown 4 for the Sega Saturn. in my view the Sega Saturn may have the best fighting game library of any console from the 90s.
I was on the fence about buying a 3DO back then. I owned an actual Neo•Geo at the time and a good assortment of games. When I saw that Samurai Shodown was being ported to 3DO, I was thrilled and decided to sell the Geo and pick up a 3DO thinking that more SNK games would make their way to the 32bit system. However, after playing SS on the 3DO, I became heartbroken. The voice tracks were compressed and quiet, and I wasn't used to waiting for load times. It took me years to repurchase a Neo•Geo along with the games that I owned. Don't get me wrong, the 3DO is a fantastic system in its own right, but to fully experience the excellence of the Geo, you must play the games on native hardware.
Despite the longer loading time the NeoGeo CD is basicaly an arcade perfect port plus arrange music, the 3do version is good but is a little choppy with some slowdowns here and there, and the voice/sound quality sampling is a little lower, anyway it nails the Snes/Genesis/MegaCd versions.
NGCD came out nearly a year after 3DO and 3DO still loads twice as fast.
Audio from the 3DO was excellent.
But it is nice to see someone compare apples with apples finally.
I would like to see 3DO's NFS compared to PS1's port and any other ports of the original NFS compared.

3DO was the most powerful system in 1993. Coders just never made good game for it. It was untouchable hardware
There was on it the best version of SF2 so far, Myst, Alone in the Dark, the first Need for Speed, and many others. Of course it's not better than the Saturn or the PS1 on the long run but in 1993 it was definitly the better console of the bunch power wise. Too bad it was released juste a bit too late and became outdated pretty fast.
@@ahok1937 Need For Speed ended up playing better on the 3DO over the PS1. The 3DO was simply released at a far too expensive price, and things like the CPU were too slow later on. What truly killed it was bad handling. The 3DO finally had a true system seller with Gex, but little was done to make use of this. A price drop to 199$ to look appealing against the PlayStation only harmed it rather than helped, it gave the appearance that the console was going to be dropped soon.
I think samurai shodown is my all time favorite fighter. I've owned copies of it for systems I don't t even have.
Maybe the 3do version was an mvs/aes sound port.. neogeo cd version has a new remastered soundtrack.

The issue with the neo cd is that they tried to make a cheap alternative to the aes instead of trying to make a equivalent system but with cheaper games. Had the neocd cost more out the gate and had more ram and 2x drive it would of easily become a logical replacement for the aes as it would of had better sound and cheaper games.
Clesarie as much as I do agree, it was pretty comparable to the AES. Yeah, the loading screens were long, but they would have wanted it to cost less and the RAM on the console is good.

The only differences about the 3do and neo geo cd, is at the player selection music, the neo geo cd is off, the 3do has the original arcade sounds.
This is what a single speed drive (NGCD) looks like... if you wonder why 16x or more is written on CD/DVD drives.

mas os personagens no neo são mais soltos, mas claro naquela epoca samurai só joguei nos arcades, época boa

The Neo CD version anyday for me, didn't care for the 3DO back then after I played one at a retail kiosk at one department store. Ofcourse these days I have the Anthology,so both of these are obsolete, but I still prefer the Neo CD port over the 3DO port even today.

It would be interesting to put both versions against the PS1's Samurai Spirits included in Samurai Spirits: Kenkaku Yubinan Pack. I think it has all the details missing in the 3DO version, with better audio quality and frame rate. But the loading times are longer than on the 3DO IIRC.
And maybe you'll be able to find some other differences, IDK...

Wowza. The muffled 3DO audio reminds me of the SNES port audio. Ouch.
3DO, I'm not so sure. SNES version was bad, not mainly for the audio (which was bad, to be sure), but for the permanently zoomed out perspective. Art of Fighting SNES had the zoom effects, so I don't see why it was omitted for SS. Wish I could ask the devs who ported lol.
Eric Andal The SNES issue was that apparently they wanted Earthquake in that version, and since he was the biggest character in the game every other character had to be ported/resized around him. Earthquake is probably the size that everyone else would be if he wasn't in the game. If anything it probably saved on memory some as despite everything it gave them the option for more elaborate backgrounds.
With the Genesis version they opted for arcade sized sprites, but since Earthquake would be too much for it, they cut him from that and the Sega CD version.
3DO should have had technically superior sound hardware being a ful 32bit CD system but it didn't.
Just goes to show why they made games for NeoGeo for over 14 years. Neogeo's audio is super clean and instruments sound like they're supposed to not like cheap synth stuff. Interestingly nGeo officially had only 15 8-bit sound channels but it was a Yamaha chip Yamaha YM2610 (best at the time) with 4 simultaneous FM channels for voices, 3 SSG channels, four operators per each channel, 1 programmable noise channel. 6 ADPCM-A channels, 18.5 kHz sampling rate 12-bit audio depth, 1 ADPCM-B channel, 1.85-55.5 kHz sampling rate 16-bit audio depth, and of course Yamaha's superior synthesized midi table. Yamaha YM2610B added another 2 FM channels. for a hardware made in the 89-90 era, thats amazing. No wonder it was so pricy.

I got my SNES in front of my TV and I am thinking about pulling the Genesis out to play this game. I don't miss the load times and I can listen to a freaking Zen CD for all this OST is worth, or maybe The Last Samurai OST.

I hate the 3do didn't have a stronger following. They screwed up sort of like atari, atari allowed anyone to make games to play on their system so a lot of crap games came out. 3do's downfall was allowing so many different makers of the console, there was Panasonic, Goldstar, and Sanyo. I've got a Panasonic 3d0 fz10 from back in the day and it was great. I actually liked it more than the PS at the time until better games came out for the PS.
I don't remember ever seeing the first style Panasonic 3do in stores around my area and the only Goldstar I've seen was a friend's about a year after it came out. I've never seen a Sanyo.
And yet a lot of bad games wound up on both the NES and SNES which didn't hurt either system so that wasn't really the problem.
It was 3DO that allowed anyone to make games for their system. Atari published the vast majority of Jaguar games. Their mistake on the games front was that they were awful cheap, and thus didn't pay the devs well nor on time. And they had a history of this, going back to Atari Corp's earliest days in video games, 86. So, they had a hard time getting quality companies and independent developers to develop for the Jaguar, and games ended up being rushed under budget constraints. Atari Corp was a different company than Atari, Inc., which was sold to Jack Tramiel in 84.
VERY VERY Impressive port for 3do, but the music not to clear, no smooth scaling are notable. A good thing is the shadow's transparencies under the main sprites (neogeo was not capable but 3do for sure).
I dont know if this port was developed by snk itself or other teams.
I prefer the NGCD version based on this comparo vid. I have played neither, and have not played the PS1 version, but SS is one of a whopping two AES cartridge games that I own, so I have played the game (it's been a little while, though). I won't bet money on this, but I believe the 3DO is using the AES soundtrack.
3do music and graphics + ngcd sound effects = perfect port!
Actually all of the sound on the ngcd was superior in bit rate/compression levels. It's evident in the voices, stage music and sound effects. This was part of the reason the 3do loaded faster, way less audio overhead
As a side note, the 3do version is closer in sound quality to the arcade cartridge. The NGCD version has been completely remastered which is why it sounds so damn good

The loading time doesn't bother me. I own a NG CD. Other than loading it pretty much is as good as the AES/MVS

goldstar version of the 3do and samurai showdown the load time's made you not want to even try to beat the game more test your patients and see how long you can't stand it until you ultimately just store the system for later and play a wii console snes or genesis version.

Ich finde aufgrund der von der Ladezeit her die 3 DO Version schon besser aber auf Grund der Hartware währe fieleicht mehr drin gewesen. Es handelt sich ja sowieso meist um 1 zu 1 Portierungen der Games. Man sieht ja bei Doom zum Beispiel ja auch das es auf Saturn und PS 1 meiner Meinung ja fast gleich aus wie die 3 DO Version des Games da die aus der 3 DO ja schon einiges Rausgeholt hatten und die PS1 und der Saturn ja eine gut Vergleichbare Hardware wahren obwohl der Saturn noch mein Faworit ist da die Konsole Optisch besser ausschaut und mehr Leistung hat und die 2D Games Hammer geil auf den Sega Saturn sind und durch den Zusatz Modul Schacht kann man auch ganz gut mit einem Import Modul alles drauf Spielen was es für den Saturn so gibt grade spiele wie Langraiser, Sailor Moon haben es mir sehr angetan.
In quality there is no comparison, even with the neo cd's slow loading times, it has the arcade quality Graphics animation audio/sfx, too bad the arrange music blows. But to load all that quality takes a while...

The Neo Geo CD uses arranged soundtrack with real instruments and things like that, because now they had all the quality that a CD has to offer to the sound.
Same with SS2, SS3, SS4, KOF from 94 to 2000 among other games. You never heard the KOF AST?

The Saturn had a double speed CD-ROM, so load times would be a bit shorter. You'd have to use a RAM cart to pay it but you really can't go wrong with either. The Saturn version is pretty much arcade perfect and SNK wouldn't dare screw up their version either. And you gotta look at the price. The Saturn version isn't that expensive, even with the RAM cart included but the Neo Geo CD needs no mod chip to play burned copies.

I have all the versions, the NGCD version has the best audio by fair and is identical to play as the AES/MVS, the 3DO version is terrible to play, isnt arcade perfect, voice quailty is poor, and the 3DO has no RGB output which all NEO-GEOs do.
I was used to the virtual console / Wii / PS2 ports of the game playing the 3DO version very choppy like mame on frame skip

NeoGeo CD's controller also destroys the 3dO's afaik, at least for the first few months before the plastic wore out of the clicky dpad. I've never been able to hold a 3dO controller but just from looking at it and reading/watching reviews, the dpad is mediocre at best.
Really if it weren't for the plastic wearing out, the NGCD's controller should be regarded as one of the best ever, up there with the Saturn.

The CDZ is much better graphics, sound, animation. At NEO GEO game is always at 60 frames per second, at 3DO frame rate is often even below 30. I have both versions on the original hardware. And as a big fan of SAMURAI SPIRITS, I can say that the 3DO version is crap .. And if you compare 3DO and CDZ on loading speed, then CDZ will be faster due to more memory.

The Neo-CD isn't that bad. It loads a little less while in game, though. It's pretty good for the 1990-1995 titles, but once you hit games from 1996 with a lot of data, the load times double.

Rob Toohey If you look at some comparison videos between the CDZ and the Neo CD, you'll see the is quite a difference in load time. Classic Game Room has a video of the CDZ that compares. To be honest though, the load times in the older Neo Geo CD systems isn't that bad. If you can handle the Sega Saturn/Playstation 1 library, you can handle Neo Geo CD. There is a lot of exaggeration going on about the load times on the system, even from people who've never played one, because it was something that stood out back in the day. But if you think back, the reason load times on the CD system where such a big deal was because it was being compared to the AES and MVS. If you pick up a Neo Geo CD, you won't regret it.
AtariBorn I actually have one. Top loader model. yeah, It isn't that bad, but playing larger games does take a little while. That's the reason it was discontinued. well one of them, anyway.

Eu tenho Neo Geo Aes, Arcade, Cd e 3DO, só olhar meus vídeos, e sei bem a diferença, a do 3DO a sensação é de estar jogando o ARCADE e AES, as do NEO CD estão bem funebres, mas gosto é gosto né!!

A Snk era esperta, aproveitava o sucesso dos games dela e portava seus games pra outras plataformas de forma porca e desleixada de propósito, afinal, eles não iriam transformar um port de uma plataforma superior a deles melhor que o original pertecente a eles.

It pisses me off how people always give the 3DO shit for high pricing and poor marketing when Neo Geo systems were WAY more expensive and more poorly marketed, and the 3DO had a better variety of games, better quality games, and a bigger library to boot! One of the most overrated and overpriced systems ever released, with a bunch of lame games (still better than Philips CDi or Atari Jaguar), by the time it started getting good games it was all over. Blame has to go on the management & marketing team as the system had a lot of potential.

Exactly... What in the world was SNK thinking using a single-speed CD drive instead of a double-speed CD drive.... Was the person who designed that hardware INSANE!
They fixed that issue with the cdz but it was only released in japan and it was already too late by then.
