There was a time when I seriously considered starting my own channel. Then I found yours and decided I couldn’t do a better job. Keep up the good work mate.
If you do your research before videos,, then go for it brother.. they are interesting and informative.. especially when some of us guys enjoy learning more about the OL LIFE.. 😂😂
Joe Bonanno was an interesting character. An old school boss who managed to produce: a book that helped bring down the commission, a hilarious 60 Minutes interview, a failed plot to murder every other boss in NY, a fake abduction of himself, etc. This shit doesn’t even happen in mobster movies.
Great video as always OC Shortz! Cheers
Makes you wonder how tactical that book was, doesn’t it? Meaning he was ostracized and embarrassed by the commission and then single handedly brought it down. It’s the ultimate “check mate”.
@@Sean-nr3ns I always wondered if it was a calculated move.. problem is those who got hurt weren’t the bosses that Bonanno wanted to rub out
@@SempreMilan2712 but does he care at that point? Or does he just want to burn LCN down. Thanks for reply. Cheers.
@@Sean-nr3ns my personal opinion is that he wrote it to save face and portray himself as a man of honor and that’s clear from the title. Being ousted apparently was an insult to him and writing the book was an attempt at polishing his image.
You out did yourself with this one, excellent episode! The 60s were an absolutely fascinating time in LCN. Between all the craziness in NY, mostly revolving around the Bonannos to Giancanna and the Kennedy's, Carlo Marcello, CIA plots....etc.
Early 50s to mid 70s is easily the most interesting period of American Cosa Nostra. So many mysteries that went unsolved still…
You right on Frankie five. Carlos marcello was are is some of the smartest people among us in the. Early 60s. Bobby Kennedy fucked with the wrong guy.
@@bradr2142 Marcello was a great boss, and a fantastic businessman to boot.
@Zika Central American drug cartels, because of their proximity to North America. Or maybe the government itself, corporate and all the sub branches, whose leaders mostly comprised of white people (not to be racist, but it’s a fact). When it comes to corruption, you could never beat the government themselves.
This is pure Cosa Nostra gold. How come nobody ever put these things up? OC is a legend !
@@OCSHORTZ I think this is partly the reason why "Tommy Ryan" was later killed. He wasn't "in it" with Lucchese and Gambino, and contested their decisions too many times. I think what they actually wanted him to do was to conduct a "phony" investigation that proves them right.
It also needs to be said that Tommy Ryan, and this is in FBI files concerning this matter, believed that Joe Bonanno never got the fifth message asking him to appear before the Commission. And if Tommy Ryan was correct, it clearly shows that Gambino and Lucchese manipulated the Commission into deciding to depose of Bonanno.
Nice video!
I think "Tommy Ryan" did the wrong thing by not playing along as the "pawn". Evidently, he was later killed when they decided keeping him around wasn't worth it anymore.
You know what I was thinking the same thing while watching this vid and your comment made it even more concrete Carlo Gambino was a snake he had no honor he betrayed everyone he ever worked under
Illegitimate commission, it hadn't been ratified every five years as was the custom.
Ironically, Joe Bananas outlived all of them by many years !!!
To be fair, JB never had the stress of being the most powerful man in NY like Gambino did
Gambino was a mueling servile man and nowhere near the power people think he was
@@SimpleLivingsMy favorite is Gambino family.. but my honest opinion, bonanno's were absolutely brutal.. i believe Joe bananas bonanno would have hit Carlo if things wouldn't have went the way they did at that time.. Joe was truly bananas, hints the name.. they were a smaller family than Gambino's though, Gambino family is huge..
Wow! That a great look into how things like this were handled and how much weight and respect some people had with the commission. GREAT video as always man, thank u!
What an incredible amount of red tape and procedural adherence by these outlaws.
Thanks for the deep dive James. Amazing.
Yeah to be Honest, I always thought it was all over Dramatized TV where you See Mob guys asking how the They Plea to Charges, when the brought in front of the Comission . But their ya go all True
Wow, so much treachery at the highest levels of LCN! Awesome episode brother!

This has to be one of the best pieces you've done.
Keep up the amazing work.
Thanks pal. Just a shame the mic started playing up and messed up the audio! Glad you enjoyed it though mate.
Excellent work as usual. The audio issue is hardly noticeable. Very appreciative of the upload!
Best video yet OC! The inner workings of such high level stuff is cool to hear.
Carlo wasn't as feared as today's media and some historians have made him out to be this mythical super boss that was so feared and ferocious. He was very conning for sure but wasn't really vicious or feared by many hard-core contemporaneous gangsters and killers of that era. Many tough mob figures just felt he wasn't tough enough to fill up Albert Anastasia's seat. Had it not been for the very feared and vicious Don Vito's support for Carlo, there's no way Carlo would have been allowed to be boss. Joe Bonanno was a way tougher cookie than Carlo and most gangsters who survived the Castellammarese war would easily testify to that😏.
Yes he was more of a strategist then a ruthless boss and overtime he filled that role of the most influential of the bosses but that was by the time he was old and everyone was gone. In his early years as boss he was almost a puppet of luchesse and gambino to take the power away from Joe bonnano on the commission.
@@mateocalderon6822 u r right but did u mean a puppet of Lucchese and Genovese? Bc what u wrote was " a puppet of Lucchese and gambino"
there's loads of evidence attesting to that, many mobsters in Convo saying he shouldn't be bosss, he has no business being boss, etc etc ! even Magaddino said they put Carlo in as Temp. boss after Anastasia was killed because they feared the family would fracture, and it was easy because he was the consigliere already. but once he got in. he created a whole fxkn Coup d'etat!
According to Bonanno in his book he "supported" Carlo as boss because he felt Carlo would be a, comparatively, weak boss of no real threat or consequence.
Great work, once again... Love the constancy of that fire you bring every week...
Awesome vid. Tommy Ryan had a lot of balls to speak that way to sitting commision bosses. I agree, illegal wiretap is likely the source.
Oh yea !!! I’ve been looking forward to another OC SHORTZ !!! Best Mob tube channel ,with no drama !!! Awesome subject !!! Thank u brother !!!
So true ! Everybody is so sick of those gossip girls doing shows with no mob content ! OC is the shinning light !

Great job as allways bro

Great vid O.C. , when the commission met up it must have been a sight to behold , so many massive egos all wanting a piece of the pie . The distrust between them must have been electric . Great stuff mate cheers.
Another awesome video man. I love this whole story.
Brilliant content mate, back to back hits with last video.keep more videos like this one coming. It's pure history pal.
Joes biggest mistake was not meeting the commission and denying everything. I believe he was in on the plot. He was very close to Magliocco . I cannot fathom Magliocco making such a huge move, in killing 2 bosses without informing Joe. Joes second biggest mistake was elevating his son Bill. The men in his borgata resented that. Bill was a pretender who was not respected at all. It’s too bad that LILO was in prison at that time. He was very loyal to Joe and very feared by everyone.
If Joe Bananas went to any meeting, he would be killed during or after. Carlo Gambino and Tommy Lucchese had their minds made up about that, and it was apparent.
N0 , Bonnano's biggest mistake was not sharing Canada with his big cousin Stefano maggadino . Stefano was the commission chairman
Another great video, James! Enjoy your weekend.
You're fantastic. I really appreciate all that you do for your videos.
Oooooo it's a long short today thank u as always brah for Ur time and effort
Thank you for this excellently researched COSA nostra history .made my Saturday morning 👍😎
Those bastards were always trying to kill each other. No wonder they thought he was trying to kill them regardless of any proof.
The treachery among the families after the deposing of Frank Costello and the death of Albert Anastasia is one of the most fascinating periods of mob history, and it was all about greed and all of the NY bosses wanting so badly to be what Charlie Lusciano said there should not be: Un capo de tutti capi.
In bonannos book he talks about members of the commission trying to kill each other. Anastasia killing his boss and finding out about a plot against him by another member of the commission. Then you got members helping the gallos. Everyone trying to stab each other in the back.
Good one OC keep them coming.
This is super interesting . Because now I can kinda see a motive in the tommy Ryan murder , and that carlo gambino probably held a grudge for him questioning his credibility in this incident and wanted him gone .
I dont see it that way. Carlo would not dare take out a high ranking member of the Genovese family over a difference of views in a commission meeting. He can take out members of his own family, but not a high ranking member of another family.
Definitely not the sole reason but it does highlight that they did not get along very well and makes sense of rumors that gambino was behind his murder. He's obviously not scared to question gambino and luchesse like other guys probably were.
Carl didn't have Tommy Ryan whacked. That was his own family that called for his head. There would have been a war for sure if another family touched an acting boss.
Tommy Ryan was whacked because he owed a debt of 4 million dollars to Carlo
Excellent video James! This is why you are the best mob content creator on UA-cam in my book 👌
As always, you are very kind and supportive. Thanks pal. I genuinely appreciate it.

Really interesting video O.C.! With friends like that who needs enemies? The audio was loud and clear on my end. Have a great weekend and thank you!
All of this was started technically by Joe Colombo. He told Gambino and Lucchesse about the supposed plot. Then he became boss of the former Profacci family

Incredible content. Well researched and presented. Gives the follower a sense of what guys like Gambino etc were really thinking, how they really spoke, and who they really were not just as we think based on books and movies..
Best story telling on UA-cam! This was a great one with an infamous cast of characters.
This is your best video yet my friend!
While I think he was technically right in this matter, I do wonder if the reason why Tommy Ryan "backs" Bonanno is to not strengthen the Gambino and Lucchese alliance with another one of their commission adversaries removed.
Amazing story Jimmy, thank you so much for that detailed explanation. You'er the best Jimmy, thank kindly.
Glad you like it pal. There was so much information that I had to leave out too! Hope you are well mate.

Interesting to note in private moments Gambino was referred to as simply "Carl"
Great vid. I’d love one of your in depths on the “Little Appalachian” meeting at La Stella restaurant in ‘66.
Amazing video. I’ve been waiting for this kind of information since I read Bonanno’s book.
Once again you opened my eyes, maybe Joe was not involved, seems like Gambino and Tommy Brown wanted an excuse to get rid of Joe, and take over the commission either way another brilliant OC shortz. Thank you
Yes Profaci’s passing really ended up being the passing of the torch to the younger generation…
From the 1940-1960 Bonanno Profaci Zerrilli and Magadino (all related through blood or marriage) had a firm grip over the Commission… with Genovese agreeing with them much of the time as well…Luchesse Bruno and Gambino wanted to hedge out Bonnano and Magadino went along with them, bc he was always trying to align himself with who he thinks will be on top.
This is by far your best video to date. And that’s really saying something.
Hi Jimmy, don't worry about the audio problem it still sounded great and I like the way you find all this information and you do a lot of digging for it. I never miss an episode even if I catch it late. Please keep up the great work ! 😎
Thanks pal. It was weird. It all recorded as normal, and then during editing I noticed the difference in sound quality. However, to meet the deadline of getting it out for Saturday morning (US time), I wasn't able to re-record it. I'm glad you enjoyed it Mark. I hope you are well pal.
@@OCSHORTZ I'm doing fine right now and thank you for asking my friend and I hope you're doing well too 😎
Do you guys thinks the Commission would have killed him if they knew he would write a tell all book? Because it seems to me rather weird someone of his former stature to be allowed to live after pulling something like that for Bonnano's ego. As always thanks for another great video OC.
Eboli was seeing the whole picture, that no one else was seeing, except Carlo Gambino.
Even if Bonanno was guilty, Joe Bonnano being replaced would hurt the Genevese family, because Gambino had already replaced Joe Provaci family with his own man Joe Colombo.
That means Carlo Gambino had control of 3 families, plus Carlo would get to appoint another boss loyal to him if Joe Bananno was removed... Eboly noticed the whole play.
Eboli was not fighting for Joe bonanno's life; Eboli was fighting for his crime family life.
In the end, Carlo won, and that's when Carlo became Boss of Bosses when Joe Bonnano was removed.
It makes more sense now why Carlo Gambino killed Eboli years later, maybe the story about Eboli taking Carlo's money was not true, and Carlo took out Eboli because he almost stopped his rise to the top of being Boss of Bosses.
It is something I considered, but figured it would make the video spiral to a different tangent. There is also speculation that Eboli was killed because of an internal Genovese Family matter, and nothing to do with Gambino. There is an FBI file that shows how Eboli is angry at Gambino with regards to a dispute over the Garbage contract for the Copacabana. Factors like this make it hard to believe that he borrowed money of Gambino a few years later. Anyway, it is always fun to speculate. I hope you are well pal.
At the time Gambino did not operate on its own. At that time he depended on Lucchese, it was Lucchese who was the main player at that time.
This is why Paul Sciacca eventually became boss. He was connected to Lucchese in the garment center
Thanks for another top episode James, I was reading Joe Bonnano's book again recently, a very interesting time in mob politics lol have a good one, take it easy. ✌😎✌

@@OCSHORTZ I’m good thanks James. Hope you are also! Been a bit MIA - apologies. Getting back to it more!
Awesome segment! Again.
I was halfway through before it occurred to me to wonder where was Chicago.
When Tommy Ryan tells Paul Rica to keep Sam giancana out of it, I think that tells us who's calling the shots in Chicago at that time.
New York held Rica in high esteem from the very beginning of the commission days. The irony is that Chicago is rumored to have had a hand in putting vito Genovese in prison. Most likely so that he couldn't start an all-out War over something that could be resolved with minimum of violence.
This was an excellent short video about a very complicated issue with a lot of moving parts. Thank you.
Set my alarm for 7:00 am CST next Saturday
Believe me Paul Ricca called the shots in Chicago until 1972 the year he passed away, The Outfit administration didn't care for Joe Bonanno much, Bonanno had a beef with Ross Prio a higher up in the Outfit over some dairy farm in Illinois a friend of Joe Bonanno's owned, this guy ran to Bonanno for help after some Outits guys were shaking him down and I believe they bombed the dairy farm, out of the New York families it was the Lucchese's who had close relationship with Chicago.
@@leebowens2631 they also had a very good relationship with Costello when he was running the Genovese family.
Prio ran the North Side crew for the Outfit.
I think there was still bad blood left over from the Castlemarese rivalry also.
Another great story/ video always look forward to your videos. Thanking you 👍
Great unique stuff! Congratulations. It confirms Bonanno’s statements in his book. Without Gambino’s and Lucchese’s plot there would have not been any “Banana’s War”

It's amazing joe bonanno didn't get killed plotting again gambino and later his book someone up there must have really liked him
Good to see your subscriber number on the rise
Great video! That was very very interesting. I always thought it strange that the commission would choose to put bonanno on the shelf rather than just take him out for that plot against Gambino and lucchese
I thought about that as well but look...these guys were old old friends who went WAAAAY BACK and came up together in the Life. Maybe they had a soft spot for Joe, who knows. What I can't comprehend is how the Commission let Caponigro live after killing Phil Testa in Philadelphia??!!!
@@sajjbrown2357 I don’t know all the details of that hit and the after math but if memory serves I was under the impression caponigro ordered the hit of angelo bruno thinking he had funzi tieri- backing him in the move because tieri had apparently told him he would back his move in front of the rest of the commission which he would need as it was an unsanctioned hit . So thinking he had the backing of someone who had the ear of the commission he ordered the hit on Angelo Bruno and it was carried out successfully then caponigro was summoned before the commission and when they said he took out bruno without anyone’s permission he told them funzi gave him the ok but funzi flat out denied that and caponigro was killed for Brunos murder.
Testa was made boss and eventually was blown up, supposedly ordered by chickie narducci and testas underboss petey casella. Narducci was killed for the hit on testa and testas under boss pete casella was put on the shelf and banished to florida.
Caponigro never killed testa and never got away with the boss he did kill. Or so the story goes.
This is super interesting, once again a great production, isn't there speculation that Gambino played Eboli years later and had him whacked? I can't remember that story but I know ive read about it before. He was shot with a deer rifle or something odd for a mob hit? Idk could be thinking of something else. Keep em comin OCS.
There is a theory that Eboli borrowed money off Gambino for a drug deal, but it all went south and Gambino had Eboli killed and then replaced with Funzi Tieri. However there a lot of holes in that story, and an alternative theory that Eboli was just a front for Benny Lombardo and was killed due to an internal power struggle in the GEnovese Family. I will cover it soon.
@@OCSHORTZ Yes that, I couldn't remember the particulars. That would make for a good show, assuming there is enough info out about it.
Always entertaining OC. Thanks again. Can’t remember if it was Joe’s book or if Bill wrote a book also and covered this time in the Bananno/ Commission beef. Lots of clarity in your reporting. Thanks always.
The Lucchese's always seemed cowardly and under handed, I often wondered why the Genovese, especially Chin stayed so close to them
They had control over a ton of rackets which made them very powerful, they just get overlooked bc they were so lowkey. Tommy luchesse had been around since the castellammare war and was actually maranzanos right hand man. The family had complete control over the garment district, the airport and most of the political connections as well deep into drug trafficking. His political connections were the reason genovese was able to take costellos spot. But yes, lucchese definitely seemed to play the background and let the other guys be the face of the problems. I think gambino learned most of his snakey ways from Tommy lucchese.
Another GREAT one, thanks. Bonanno always reminded me of my grandfather, looks wise :)
I believe this proves that Paul Ricca was the top boss in the Outfit.
Clearly the best pod cast on organize crime. People don't really know how close the outfit and genovese crime families were. Tommy Ryan was smarter than we know, and Carl wasn't as powerful as some thought. Good job!
Yeah but when Magliocco went an they put Colombo in his place Gambino an Luchese had a majority vote on the commission
@@flamboyentpromotions3471 Wrong. Again The Genovese Family and the Outfit were members of the Commission, also Philadelphia and Jersey were full members as well. This is Carl and Tommy moving unilaterally to have their way.
@@dogman_ your talking about some expanded commission that stopped having full blown meetings soon after Apalachin. When they has the commission trial in the 80s that was about the big 5 New York families.Philly was like a proxy of the big New York families during Gambinos time i don’t know which families influence they were under you might know and as far a Jersey ive never really heard anyone say they’re a vital part of the commission,an as we can see those other families you mentioned were basically diminish an told they wouldn’t be coming back to judge Joe an they didn’t have much recourse. Some are more equal than others that why i say Gambino an Luchese kinda took control when Vito was in jail
I can’t believe they didn’t take Joe out, great video once again.
Couldn’t get to him Joe was not really even in New York at this time so it was best to let him retire
Be rest assured, Joe Bonanno was the toughest Sicilian on the Commission at that point in time. Carlo n Co really feared him bc they know and remember the history of the Castellammarese war and how Joe was a very good guerilla war fighter in those days. That's why they didn't want an open war with Joe Bonanno bc they have been living their great lives as bosses for a while and didn't want to have to start jumping into mouse holes when an all out war breaks out.
This confirms exactly what my grandfather said for years, it's what he said in his book and it's what I am saying now. Many of the "Mafia Influencers" of today are saying Joseph Bonanno was out to become the Boss of Bosses. Nothing could be further from the truth. He wanted to keep the peace and continue making money as they had been in the '30s, `40s, and '50s.
Ya well Carlo Gambino was a snake and watching this confirms that he betrayed everyone he ever worked with and had Luciano not been deported Carlo would have tried to kill him this video shows how Carlo wanted to be the boss of bosses for sure
Thx OC for another interesting video.
It's amazing Bonanno made it to his 90s all the feathers he'd ruffled on several different subjects.
Hey James. This video, as usual, was very good. It was just a bit hard to come to any conclusions about the motives of each of the players with so much Back-and-forth input from so many players. If you ask me it looks like Gambinio would have liked to see Bonanno out of the way, but never pushed for an all out Hit on Bonnano. Complicated!! Have a Great Day Mate!!
Giancana and Accardo HATED Bonanno. Sam pushed for him to be killed several times
Did they had some history towards each other? I always thought Outfit only interaction with New York were Genoveses.
@@jmav622 because Bonnano planted his flag in Arizona and was trying to infiltrate California who the Outfit had influenced over. Joe outmaneuvered a lot guys. The Canada family was his Satellite family. Plus influence in Sicily He was planting flags everywhere. And he feared no one. Only reason he stop fighting was he had a heart attack.
Accardo did not neither did Ricca…
Giancana also was sticking his beak in NY business… he wanted the Commission to whack Vito Genovese as well after Appalachian. But obviously nothing came of it do to Accardo and other Commission Bosses elected for other methods dealing with Bonanno and Genovese
Excellent!! Good Morning my friend!! Have a wonderful weekend!!
Great episode.Reading how Tommy Eboli stood up to Carlo Gambino, makes me wonder if Carlo held that against him,and used that as a catalyst to have him killed years later.
Hey James 🖐️ as always, another fine job 👍 I have heard a little bit about this story, over the years, but your version is by far, the most thorough, informative and complete overview of all the facts and people involved in this series of events that make up this story.
You always do a stellar job mate✌️ Thanks Pal, Tracy.☘️🦉. Not for nothing, for a borgatta that has been on life support a few times, they are a resilient bunch, they always bounce back, out of the original New York City Five Families, they are the only one that still carries, the founding Godfathers original name, The Bonanno's have always been The Bonanno's. Now that I think about it, the Luchese and Genovese may have been part of the founding five, I know, profaci became Colombo, and I think Gagliano became Gambino, Please let Me know the correct order, if you have a chance, Thanks Again Jimbo is another thing, I can't see these new York City guys going to consult a stark raving mad momo giancana ??? did they really need to go all the way to Chicago ?
