As a person who lives in Melbourne myself, short videos or long I don't mind. I'm enjoying hearing your perspective of things I may pass by regularly without thinking about it, like Kew junction for example. And plan to have a proper look at less familiar places, like Fed Square. Your narrative skill is commendable and I look forward to more 🙂
I'm often at Beer DeLuxe and wander over here just to hang out in a quiet space, a great one in one of the busiest parts of the city. I have leant over this balcony several times and never realised
Thanks Philip, I never knew this was there. I really enjoy your videos, telling the history of Melbourne. Being older I'm much more interested in the city I grew up in.
Federation would of been especially a time of celebration in border areas. Prior to Federation there were customs posts on the borders and there was customs dues to be paid on goods when going over the border. So when going between eg NSW and Victoria you would have your bag checked and have to pay duty. Up at Yarrawonga there is still the customs house on the lake. Prior to Federation, farmers would swim their horses over the Murray to evade paying duty on them. We now take it for granted driving from Sydney to Melbourne and not stopping at all.
Enjoyed this video about Fed Square and like others did not know the existence of the display there. I very much enjoy all your videos, the narrative and editing. Wonder how you went from being a City Councilor to a videophile?
I went up today to check this out, and all of those boards were covered over with black vinyl. Not sure why, a bit disappointing. Although there are 20th anniversary events going on for Fed Square at the moment, so maybe something else is planned for it.
I emailed Fed Square about its removal and got the following response: "The timeline that was found in The Atrium balcony has been removed as we are considering how we continue to use this space for storytelling in the future. We’re also currently looking at how and where we share First Peoples history about the land on which Federation Square sits, as well as the post-contact industrial history and the creation (and architectural vision) that is Fed Square as we know it today."
Ahh, Federation - My great grandfather Henry Foster was a member of parliament during Federation. He was the Minister of Mines when the Welcome Stranger Nugget was found. His name is in the monument - my only claim to handed down family fame lol Oh, and he had a town named after him. It was originally called Ellesmere, they changed it to Fosterville.
The couple of times I have had to travel to the centre of the Big Smoke, the impression I got of looking at Fed Square from Flinders St was that it was a ticket only closed off building. As appealing to look at as a dog turd on your front porch. Now I have seen this video, I understand it was designed by an architect and not an engineer. That atrium has the worst echo suppression. Sounds like you would need hearing protection if you were in there for more than five minutes.
Interesting. Not sure about why Ned Kelly or pre-colonial Australia has anything to do with Federation apart from box ticking & self esteem of people not wanting to be left out of anything.
