Jim Marshall is playing in his 200th straight games, that sent chills down my spine, why he's not in the HOF? There should be a trophy named after him, True Iron Man.
I was blessed with the opportunity to watch most of these games! Yes it would have been nice to get a ring or two.... or four. Being one of the finest defenses EVER is nothing to be ashamed of.
This was not only the greatest Vikings defense of all time but the greatest ever. Only 4 times in the last 71 years has a defense given up less than 1 TD per game, Those defenses were the 69,70,71 and 73 VIKINGS. No defense has ever given up less points or yards over an 8 year stretch than the 69-76 Vikings. If you want to know who the greatest 20 single season defenses of all time are check out "greatest nfl defenses of all time part 2" and continue watching part 3 for the complete top 20 all time.
Those guys were brutal but they kept it in the play. It wasn't very often if at all you ever saw them taunting or dancing around after a big hit. They just took care of business while the ball was in play. Way different and much better game back then.
This Vikings defense was one of the bests all time. It was especially terrifying in their home field in blistering cold temperatures. Too bad they have a closed roof stadium now. It actually takes away an element of their home field advantage.
I saw Lawrence McCutheon, the great Ram's runningback do his damnedness running to beat the Purple Gang and it just didn't happen. The Rams/Vikings were a sit down and watch game, without a doubt. Two great defenses, great offenses, just a great game.
This was very well done... Outstanding work putting all of this video together.. And this is coming from a Cowboys fan.. but grew up in the 1970's, watching great defenses like the Purple People eaters, the Steele Curtain, the Orange Crush the Doomsday Defense and many more... Great Job 👍
@ 24:27 that's how you rap up old Walter, but to Walter's credit he rushed for an NFL single game record 275 yds against the Purple Gang, unbelievable when I saw it on the sports news break.
I'm a vikings fan since 68. I watched every play of that game. I can't remember if the bears won 10-7 or 17- 14 I think they won by 3 points after Walter ran for all those yards.
They could be the greatest team that ever took the field love my Minnesota Vikings, this is coming from a guy 61 years old live my whole life in Ohio die hard Viking fan believe it or not there's a lot of us, they just couldn't win the big one, I'm not superstitious sometimes I wonder if they are cursed.
My dad always talked about the purple people eaters so I decided to do a search and stumbled on this gem. Judging only on these brief highlights I have to say this vikings defense is on par or slightly better than the 1980 Oakland Raiders defense (which is one of the most underrated ever). If only they had an offense to go with this amazing defense. The 1985 bears would have this defense beat in my opinion...The bears defense that year was rediculous
@18:50 Carl Eller was really that mean. You did not want him to play mad, he could be unstoppable and break a game wide open by creating a turnover separating the player from the ball.
True it was sad. They had 3 super bowl appearances in the 70s along 4 NFC championship appearances. No rings but it's saying something about the team. Kind of like the Bills in 90s. The better AFC teams won in the end.
@@1Corinthians15.1-4 The Broncos also lost 4 straight Super Bowls in the 70s and 80s. Seems like back in those days when certain teams made it to the big game, you already knew they were doomed.
For my money this is the greatest defense in NFL history I know they lost those four super bowls but that's a luck of the draw thing Go back and look at the numbers from 68 to 78 who would you think was better the steel curtain or the purple gang it's the purple gang by a wide margin statistically they were just the most dominant defense you could ever see

Makes me appreciate my 'Purple People Eaters' autographed Viking helmet all the more.
The best football video....EVER.
Niners fan.

I dont know why but the scene at 3:51 with that music and # 20 returning the ball gives me goose bumps, the nostalgia of it'
This is fantastic editing. Well done!

Thank you for doing this. These guys were my childhood heroes and the highlight of my week.
💜California born & raised but this is why i became 61yr Vikings fan for life!💛
Was a Ram fan and they broke my heart a few times. Much respect to the bad ass Vikings!

This defensive line was featured as a "Jeopardy!" clue.
When a defense was allowed to hit you. Memories......
today’s NFL is far better than back then
@@dutdut2.052 That’s debatable. I’m not sure you can properly compare the two eras.
@@dutdut2.052 no way. They are trying to make a violent game safe and you can't do that.
I still can't reason why they at least did not get one. Much respect
Thank you so much for uploading this relic!

This video excited me. Viking fan since 1976 thanks for these players
@22:10-22:18, Those linebackers were deadly headhunters and menacing.

My Dad roomed with Lonnie Warrick at UT. He's the reason I've been a Vikings fan...
The autumn wind only sounds menacing when you see silver and black I don’t know what it’s doing here but oh well...
My Vikes 💔 Got absolutely RAN OVER in the last 3 Super Bowls!

Who did the original narration for this video? John Facenda? Pat Summerall?
Skol 20/20

They were this good for ten years...not just one.
@@dicer666 Proof that the best offense isnt a good defense

Amazing that with a defense this dominant they could never finish the season with a ring.

@@nathanlenneman9987 I stand corrected. They definitely had 4. Just like the Buffalo Bills of the 90s. 👍
