Interesting trip to the CA backcountry. Consider always adding the UV light to your quiver of detection devices, as we're wondering how much the walls of the dark cave would have fluoresced. A dirt bike may have helped your overall access over those terrible roads. Nice scenic video of your vehicle's tribulations.
I usually carry a UV light with me. I was a little rushed down at the mining area because the bad roads ate up a lot of my time. A motored bike of some kind would be really helpful in an area like this.
Make sure you watch out for snakes. It seems like it would be hard to hear them. They make almost the same noise as your rad detector Do you carry a gas detector o2 meter for mining?
New to the world of "seeing" all things radioactive. Always wanted a geiger counter and recently bought a couple low end models from amazon and ebay. Super awesome stuff. Took one of my geiger counters to work and stopped at a couple spots on the way home one night to see readings of local areas from the road. Not a real excursion as of yet and nothing spicy in the areas I been at work and home, about 38 CPM. I plan on going around to more places to check them out in Kentucky. Eastern Sierras got record amounts of snow and rainfall in the fall 2021-spring 2024. Last year so much snow fell near mammoth that 395 was closed for weeks. It was literally bonkers how much rain fell. One of the shooting ranges up there, we had our road wash out 3 times and required multi-thousand dollar repairs. There's a lot of neat stuff in the eastern sierra, especially that region. If you're still in the area, Fossil Falls is really neat. (but not radioactive) there's also Trona Pinnacles.
I’ve been to Fossil Falls a couple times and got some cool shots out there. The Eastern Sierras are a magical place. Sky Rock is also an amazing hidden place out there.
Yeah that Sierra's saw a lot of real bad rain storms this last winter. I don't know how far you are from Cerro Gordo Mine but I know the road to it had to be rebuilt a couple times. Interesting though I watch a lot of abandon mine videos and haven't seen Uranium mines before. Very interesting. Great video and nice adventure.
Thanks. Yeah, I haven’t seen a bunch of uranium mine videos either. There is an extra level of danger I suppose. Most seem to be from the late 40’s on. So the level of decay is nothing compared to an old silver or gold mine.
I'd love to come. Being from England we don't have such luxuries for radiation hobbyists. I went out once to our national park with my counter and found nothing in 5 hours I'd love to just go out and find an ore sample, bring home to test as Drew does. Drew lives in such a lovely place. America is so grand it's environment is so diverse. From mountains to deserts to swamps to lush forest to the tropics of Florida, all the way north to the sub zero temps of the great north. That reservoir you use to be able to fish, there also was a resort there at some point in time. I have driven that portion of 395 so many times I think I can do it with my eyes closed! Love that drive through there, has its beautyl Glad you made it out.
I love California. I've lived here my entire life and have never been to that part of the state before. Those mines seemed sketch so I'm glad you stayed out! The desert is such a beautiful place (when it's not over 100).

Thanks, I’ll keep safe. Not worried about the radiation from uranium mines. So many other sources of radiation that can do some real damage. As far as the scars of mining…it doesn’t mean much. Natural can reclaim the area in a breath.
Excellent video, that area sure reminds me of central Australia with the arid hills and terrain, letting the tires down is a good move to help increase traction on loose ground, you did a great job to make your way out. It would be easy to go down into a steep area and get trapped trying to get out.
Glad you enjoyed the video. When I was going down that road that's when I felt I was going to have a problem. Sometimes you get to a point where you want to turn around but the only way to go is forward.

Hey, love your videos! You've inspired me to get a Radiacode 103, which arrived yesterday. The only thing I have been able to detect so far is that my fireplace bricks are slightly above background and that my Trinitite is virtually undetectable.
lots of radio active stuff on ebay, may I suggest ordering up an old kerosene lamp mantle? new-old stock version were made with thorium .... Fun for the whole family !

That would be awesome. But there is so much you see by walking a trail rather than driving or biking it. But in this case having a ICE dirt bike or e-bike version would have been extremely helpful.
Carry a small spray bottle of 50% acetic acid and a UV flashlight. In the dark, spray a suspected uranium ore surface, give it a few minutes and illuminate the area with the UV. Any uranium inclusions will have been converted to uranyl acetate and will fluoresce bright green. Some uranium minerals such as autinite will light up without the acid.
Great video! Didn’t know that was out there. Had my jeep on 2 wheels on washed out places a couple times many many years ago. That was interesting to learn it could do that! and had to back down toward a cliff once, the road took a sharp right and started going up at like 40° with loose rocks and stuff. The left and behind me dropped 800 feet maybe. talk about STRESSFUL!! Maybe the most terrifying thing I ever attempted.
Yeah that area can be stressful trying to to find a safe route. The White Mountains can be just as bad. Silver Canyon Trail can get a bit crazy if you go off the main route out by Bishop.
Theres lots of ghost towns in US-395 to Reno. There is a gold mine in Atolia, California. There could also have some slightly radioactive rocks out there.
You should link up with @GhostTownLiving. Brett is in the area of this and would be a great video for both of you getting some readings from down in his mines.
If you go, perhaps take a radon reading down in his little chill area deep undergound to see how bad it is. The cheap little Corentium detectors can give you a reasonably accurate reading in 24 hours if you are able to stay the night. I think he even has wifi down there now but you won't need it for that.
Having driven 395, the road itself is quite pretty but also really hostile if you are not careful too! It is worth driving along if you ever get the chance.
Hi Drew, I'm coming back to your channel after a few months, nice improvements including drone shots etc. I watched an episode last night, it seemed like there was concern that your wife might not know precisely where you are. Get a Garmin InReach or equivalent. The device interfaces with your phone, and will sent realtime updates on your location to satellite. Your wife can bring up a map online and see your location in real time, or at least your precise location before you went underground. Press a button to summon help (above ground). And... the track of successive location pings on the map is useful for navigation. Ah, I hear you have Onyx, perhaps that has similar features. Also, from your explorations around Mi Vida, I found about the White Mesa Mill which has been taking on radioactive waste to reclaim uranium, controversial. Thanks,

This happened to me recently! I got stuck twice trying to make my way to a location that seemed described as being able to navigate it rather easily ☠️
I would use gaia gps for this type of stuff, I use it all the time for prospecting. The maps layers I use incombo are bedrock geology/mines and mineral resources/private land/public land to tell what's in the area, to find a particular place and to see if I can legally be there. I've been to a few uranium mines up here in washington and those maps helped to navigate private property because a lot of those mines up here are locked away. And the maps feature on the radacode is helpful to zone in on higher activity spots in the area as you hike
OnX has the same property map data, which is extremely helpful exploring areas. I’ve used Gaia GPS before. But I usually use Motion X GPS for large trip tracking and onX for smaller area tracking and waypoint management.
Really cool countryside there! I'd be more worried about Rattlesnakes hiding in those mines rather than radiation or rock falls! Snakes of ANY kind give me the willies, I'm glad we only have 4 snakes in the UK, only one of those is venomous.
I’ve only run across snakes a handful of times. Most of the time it’s non-venomous types. I’ve moved snakes out of the road so they don’t get run over. I use to catch snakes and lizards all the time as a kid.
When you were first stuck I thought you need a winch, then I realized what would you hook it to? You would need a ton of rocks to hook your winch to. Great video!
you can go to poland to Kowary, there is nice uranium mine "podgórze" i was there the guides are really nice there is cool colection of uranium glass, old radon like spa and a lot of uranium salt deposits, you can buy there new uranium glass as i did. Yeah really nice touristic place but very far away from you, i also found uranium ore on parking lot next to that mine
HaHa, you can see your film threading experience bleed into your editing and content creation. Good work! By that I mean you obviously absorbed some of the talent behind what makes it to the theater.
Most of my projection job experience was spent on studio lots, where I got to see lots of behind the scenes work on films. I learned a great deal just working at a location like that. Theaters can teach you some of the technical knowledge needed doing projection but not much in the way of making films.
...driving for hours to explore an old mining site and then upon completing the last 3 or 4 miles the road becomes totally impassable.... can be aggravating sometimes. I experienced a similar struggle this week when trying to locate Polar Mesa in the La Sals. I did eventually find the backfilled adits of Polar King 1-5 but not really worth the full day effort. Also my conclusion was very similar to yours.
I've been out to so many mining sites where I hiked a couple miles out only to find everything filled in. Seems like it gets harder and harder to find open adits. I usually find some hot pieces of ore laying around, which is always fun to find.

I'm going to be visiting friends in Arizona (Phoenix area) soon and was thinking it may be fun to go rock hunting. Looks like there's several decent sites near there. Not sure if there's any good places to find radioactive minerals around there. Need to get a Radiacode 103 too to go with my Radiascan 701 sooner than later too.
There's always something to find if you look in the right places. I know there are some uranium deposits in Arizona. I would look it up on the USGS site or thediggings.com. Both are great resources I use all the time to find uranium mines.
that was pretty mild 4x4 you really need to go out with a group and see what your truck can do. as long as you have a locker in the rear you can go through some pretty crazy stuff
No lockers on the truck yet. I have taken it out on some pretty intense trails over the years. The footage I got really didn't capture how difficult that trail was.
I totally understand. The desert does require some preparation. I’m usually well stocked with 5 gallons of water and some camping meals. Along with a small med kit.
The radiation isn’t high enough to have any effect on the animals living in there. I’m sure there are other mines with a high enough radiation where that wouldn’t be true.

The 103G has a different sensor in it that has more gamma resolution and is a tad more sensitive. The 102 and 103 do a great job, so if you have one of those I think that's still pretty good.
I use to live in Southern California for years. Many parts of the state are very familiar to me. I might try and do a meet up one of these days. So many people want to chew the fat.

Good video. Thank You. Kinda wondering why there would be a water reservoir in an area with so much uranium. Arn't they afraid of run off from the mines causing contamination? Just curious about that. I know the mines may be safe to visit especially naturally occuring deposits, but injecting particles of uranium from the reservoir water cannot be healthy..
There is so much naturally occurring uranium and radium in ground water it would blow your mind. Municipal waters supplies try to remove as much of it as they can. But they can’t get all of it.
I wish I would have spent more time in the area as I didn't get to show more of it. Was a little concerned about getting out of there. Maybe next time I'm out there since it seems like there are some other mines to look at on the next trail down.
I find it surprising that you didn't come back with a UV light. It can be a good tool to find what you're looking for. I do enjoy your vids and have been to many of the places you cover. I might also suggest the San Gregorian Mts south west of Yucca valley. There were some low yield claims there in the 50's and 60's.
Yes , San Gorgonio mts. I totally missed that when I posted. There are also gold prospector spots on the slopes. I have found some interesting specimens along there and in the washes.

Have you ever done an episode on the Santa Susanna field lab nuclear accident and pollution scandal near Simi Valley California? I would be surprised if you weren't already aware of this and just how scandalous the entire affair has been. From the accident and cover up itself, to chronically failing clean up efforts. Its a true piece of dark American nuclear history.
the 395 area of searching is really bad. it is nest to find some one from this area. especially from Ridgecrest who can take you out to there areas. One mistake your gone for ever. always make sure you got a lot of water. jeweled for steel/ extra oil. i have explored out there. you are really not in a very safe place. to be at. with all of the harsh rain and snow. your lucky to get where you. the res you are by is own by lawpd. highly contested area out there. be safe always leave info where you been and where you going. just in case you drop in to something you wished you had not
Thanks for the advice. I've been going out to areas up and down 395 for the last 15 years, camping all over and exploring the areas in and around the White Mountains. Its one of my favorite places to explore and to photograph.
@@RadioactiveDrew well i been out here about 20 plus years. when my wife an i got married we combed all over the back areas. you might want to keep in mind lewd have roads that run upper area and lower area. we use to ride our quads out in the area a lot. but also had our big urban with a 6 inch kit. now she passed from cancer 20 months ago. pretty much broke me. so i have no reason to go out there any more. one of the best and safest ways is to fly and see what the area is like before you run down the roads. be a lot safer. well be safe keep your eyes peeled and watch being alone. always leave a message where your at with some one. this way there is a place to start looking if something went south on you. god forbid. from a few people i know thoses who are out there shoot first and shoot again when they find you. just be safe. i know it is a little creepy out there.

With sincere concern for you, Drew, it's foolish to go places like this solo. an unfortunate fall or other injury could easily result in your death. You're too far to just call for help. Even a single buddy going with you could save your life or get help. I enjoy your videos, but hope you will take greater care in the future.
I recommend Drews suggestion on the Joshua Tree uranium location at copper mountain. I went there and found my first radioactive ore for my collection, THANK YOU DREW!!!
A lot of people who don't know rural/wild California have zero idea of how inaccessible some areas are. There are some great places to visit that you have to hike half a day or more in to reach. You absolutely cannot reach by vehicle, even dirt-bike. Temps can be so high as to be dangerous as well. I've done some rough trails like that after the late 90s el nino and it can be pretty harrowing, I only had a 2 wheel drive truck and we had to get out and stack rocks and wood multiple times to get unstuck. Let alone several high water crossings. But there are some amazing, simply amazing places out there, but reaching them is challenging to down right dangerous.

If you go, perhaps take a radon reading down in his little chill area deep undergound to see how bad it is. The cheap little Corentium detectors can give you a reasonably accurate reading in 24 hours if you are able to stay the night. I think he even has wifi down there now but you won't need it for that.

I watched an episode last night, it seemed like there was concern that your wife might not know precisely where you are. Get a Garmin InReach or equivalent. The device interfaces with your phone, and will sent realtime updates on your location to satellite. Your wife can bring up a map online and see your location in real time, or at least your precise location before you went underground. Press a button to summon help (above ground). And... the track of successive location pings on the map is useful for navigation.
Ah, I hear you have Onyx, perhaps that has similar features.
Also, from your explorations around Mi Vida, I found about the White Mesa Mill which has been taking on radioactive waste to reclaim uranium, controversial.

I've did some Uranium exploring in this area last year.
Most of the Uranium mineral I found in this area was Autinite in Siltstone.

That whole area of the Eastern Sierras is very beautiful.
I would use gaia gps for this type of stuff, I use it all the time for prospecting. The maps layers I use incombo are bedrock geology/mines and mineral resources/private land/public land to tell what's in the area, to find a particular place and to see if I can legally be there. I've been to a few uranium mines up here in washington and those maps helped to navigate private property because a lot of those mines up here are locked away. And the maps feature on the radacode is helpful to zone in on higher activity spots in the area as you hike
OnX has the same property map data, which is extremely helpful exploring areas. I’ve used Gaia GPS before. But I usually use Motion X GPS for large trip tracking and onX for smaller area tracking and waypoint management.
You must have come over the top from Cactus Flats Rd. That was an astounding feat.
Cactus Flats was the road with all the Joshua Trees. I turned off of it heading west up and over.
Really cool countryside there! I'd be more worried about Rattlesnakes hiding in those mines rather than radiation or rock falls!
Snakes of ANY kind give me the willies, I'm glad we only have 4 snakes in the UK, only one of those is venomous.
I’ve only run across snakes a handful of times. Most of the time it’s non-venomous types. I’ve moved snakes out of the road so they don’t get run over. I use to catch snakes and lizards all the time as a kid.
When you were first stuck I thought you need a winch, then I realized what would you hook it to? You would need a ton of rocks to hook your winch to. Great video!
They do make a land anchor, which would have been helpful in that situation. But stacking those rocks did the trick.
Went out with Bill Burke who is a 4 wheel instructor and we broke his land anchor which he had never done before.

you can go to poland to Kowary, there is nice uranium mine "podgórze" i was there the guides are really nice there is cool colection of uranium glass, old radon like spa and a lot of uranium salt deposits, you can buy there new uranium glass as i did. Yeah really nice touristic place but very far away from you, i also found uranium ore on parking lot next to that mine

HaHa, you can see your film threading experience bleed into your editing and content creation. Good work! By that I mean you obviously absorbed some of the talent behind what makes it to the theater.
Most of my projection job experience was spent on studio lots, where I got to see lots of behind the scenes work on films. I learned a great deal just working at a location like that. Theaters can teach you some of the technical knowledge needed doing projection but not much in the way of making films.
...driving for hours to explore an old mining site and then upon completing the last 3 or 4 miles the road becomes totally impassable.... can be aggravating sometimes. I experienced a similar struggle this week when trying to locate Polar Mesa in the La Sals. I did eventually find the backfilled adits of Polar King 1-5 but not really worth the full day effort. Also my conclusion was very similar to yours.
I've been out to so many mining sites where I hiked a couple miles out only to find everything filled in. Seems like it gets harder and harder to find open adits. I usually find some hot pieces of ore laying around, which is always fun to find.

Also do not forget your black light it will show you a lot more then a white lite
I know, I totally forgot it in the truck. I'm sure I'll be back out to this area again. There are some other areas I want to check out right by these mines a little more south.
I'm going to be visiting friends in Arizona (Phoenix area) soon and was thinking it may be fun to go rock hunting. Looks like there's several decent sites near there. Not sure if there's any good places to find radioactive minerals around there. Need to get a Radiacode 103 too to go with my Radiascan 701 sooner than later too.
There's always something to find if you look in the right places. I know there are some uranium deposits in Arizona. I would look it up on the USGS site or thediggings.com. Both are great resources I use all the time to find uranium mines.

that was pretty mild 4x4 you really need to go out with a group and see what your truck can do. as long as you have a locker in the rear you can go through some pretty crazy stuff
No lockers on the truck yet. I have taken it out on some pretty intense trails over the years. The footage I got really didn't capture how difficult that trail was.
Need a rear locking diff at least. I was out in Lone Pine last week doing crazy stuff like that checking out old mines.
Lone Pone is one of my favorite places to camp…and yes, I need a locking diff. It’s on my list of upgrades to do to the truck.
Tried to go there in February...Went to the gates of the dam to tried get up there..Wound up going south or Ridgecrest instead...
There is a North route around the reservoir.
You need lockers in those axles. And a better flash light
I do have a better flashlight but I wasn't thinking about it when I left the truck. Lockers would be extremely helpful in the future.

I totally understand. The desert does require some preparation. I’m usually well stocked with 5 gallons of water and some camping meals. Along with a small med kit.
Title of this program brings up a primary safety rule---never go caving or mine exploring alone!

The radiation isn’t high enough to have any effect on the animals living in there. I’m sure there are other mines with a high enough radiation where that wouldn’t be true.

The 103G has a different sensor in it that has more gamma resolution and is a tad more sensitive. The 102 and 103 do a great job, so if you have one of those I think that's still pretty good.

Good video. Thank You. Kinda wondering why there would be a water reservoir in an area with so much uranium. Arn't they afraid of run off from the mines causing contamination? Just curious about that. I know the mines may be safe to visit especially naturally occuring deposits, but injecting particles of uranium from the reservoir water cannot be healthy..
There is so much naturally occurring uranium and radium in ground water it would blow your mind. Municipal waters supplies try to remove as much of it as they can. But they can’t get all of it.

I wish I would have spent more time in the area as I didn't get to show more of it. Was a little concerned about getting out of there. Maybe next time I'm out there since it seems like there are some other mines to look at on the next trail down.
I find it surprising that you didn't come back with a UV light. It can be a good tool to find what you're looking for.

I might also suggest the San Gregorian Mts south west of Yucca valley. There were some low yield claims there in the 50's and 60's.

Yes , San Gorgonio mts. I totally missed that when I posted. There are also gold prospector spots on the slopes. I have found some interesting specimens along there and in the washes.

Its not dangerous...the main hazards in a uranium mine are the same with all mines, fall hazards or having something fall on you.
What software did you use to create that intro?

I would be surprised if you weren't already aware of this and just how scandalous the entire affair has been. From the accident and cover up itself, to chronically failing clean up efforts. Its a true piece of dark American nuclear history.

the 395 area of searching is really bad. it is nest to find some one from this area. especially from Ridgecrest who can take you out to there areas. One mistake your gone for ever. always make sure you got a lot of water. jeweled for steel/ extra oil. i have explored out there. you are really not in a very safe place. to be at. with all of the harsh rain and snow. your lucky to get where you. the res you are by is own by lawpd. highly contested area out there. be safe always leave info where you been and where you going. just in case you drop in to something you wished you had not
Thanks for the advice. I've been going out to areas up and down 395 for the last 15 years, camping all over and exploring the areas in and around the White Mountains. Its one of my favorite places to explore and to photograph.
@@RadioactiveDrew well i been out here about 20 plus years. when my wife an i got married we combed all over the back areas. you might want to keep in mind lewd have roads that run upper area and lower area. we use to ride our quads out in the area a lot. but also had our big urban with a 6 inch kit. now she passed from cancer 20 months ago. pretty much broke me. so i have no reason to go out there any more. one of the best and safest ways is to fly and see what the area is like before you run down the roads. be a lot safer. well be safe keep your eyes peeled and watch being alone. always leave a message where your at with some one. this way there is a place to start looking if something went south on you. god forbid. from a few people i know thoses who are out there shoot first and shoot again when they find you. just be safe. i know it is a little creepy out there.

With sincere concern for you, Drew, it's foolish to go places like this solo. an unfortunate fall or other injury could easily result in your death. You're too far to just call for help. Even a single buddy going with you could save your life or get help.

A lot of people who don't know rural/wild California have zero idea of how inaccessible some areas are. There are some great places to visit that you have to hike half a day or more in to reach. You absolutely cannot reach by vehicle, even dirt-bike. Temps can be so high as to be dangerous as well. I've done some rough trails like that after the late 90s el nino and it can be pretty harrowing, I only had a 2 wheel drive truck and we had to get out and stack rocks and wood multiple times to get unstuck. Let alone several high water crossings. But there are some amazing, simply amazing places out there, but reaching them is challenging to down right dangerous.
