It just brought tears to my eyes, being a transwoman it connects a lot... Im from India, and im always fascinated by hawaiian culture... Im so proud of these people,, i wish their legacy continues till eternity
In pre-colonial India there was also something like this as well, they were called Hijras. Many pre-colonial cultures had a third gender even Mexico it’s very beautiful and sad at same time that it was washed away by colonizers
I’ll always remember discovering the Healing Stones Of Kapaemahu on Waikiki, and their true history recently highlighted at the Bishop Museum. Back then I thought, “wow! A spiritual tradition that INCLUDES the contributions of all including the gender and sexual diverse! How healthy!”
The people who lived before colonizing were the best kind, cultural harmony, no sex discrimination, no gender discrimination, like the best you could expect from people. I always hoped colonizing never happened
I loved this. I felt like the speech to the children was very moving. I feel like enlightened society would realize that these things are natural. And people that preach that it is against God are ridiculous. If you were quoting the Bible, you need to look again and see the parts that say Judge not lest ye be judged, judgment is mine saith the Lord, do onto others as you would have done unto you. I only quote these things because people who use the Bible as a reason to bash anything not heterosexual use the Bible as a reference. They forget to look at the New Testament where Jesus forgave all our sins and died for every sinner. So regardless of whether a sin was listed in the Old Testament or not it is not our job to judge. We are not gods. We are human. Our only job is to love the people around us. To make this world better than we found it. I hope that each one of us finds somebody in our life that gives us the kindness we need and needs some kindness from us so we can meet our true potential.
This was so powerful to me. I'm Kanaka Maoli, but raised mostly in the continental US. I've always felt a powerful spiritual urge and connection to Hawaii, even though I was very young when I lived there. Recently I learned about Māhū and experienced an awakening in myself. I was taught my whole life that Māhū meant gay, and was a bad thing. But knowing that it means so much more, and that I am the true meaning of Māhū has made my soul so happy. I feel aloha Hawai'i calling to me, and this just made everything so much more meaningful. Mahalo nui iā 'oe
I like to use the term Eunuch. I'm 46 from North Carolina and knew how I was born at 6. At 7 when I had my first Bible and read about the Eunuchs in the book of Esther I heard God's voice tell me that is who I am. Matthew 19:12 For there are some Eunuchs so born from their mother's womb.
While I respect the Hawaiian culture this video is not necessarily accurate. The Hawaiians had a war culture which is why King Kamehameha seized control of all the islands and killed many to do it. They even have a war God Ku.
Yeah....the whole thing of, "We all lived in peace and Aloha until you white assholes showed up..." never rang clean for me. Kamehameha showed some serious Aloha when he got a hold of those British guns, yeah? Mahus are cool, though.
This has nothing to do with your modern woke political identity. Most of these people are gender non conforming homosexuals. Not straight girls with green hair and piercings yelling “kill all men” and screaming about the patriarchy while faking oppression at a university. These people faced actual oppression while Gen Z woke nonbinaries have don’t nothing but ERASE what transsexuals and gender non conforming people actually are and confuse the public. How dare you try to compare this beautiful ancient tradition to that woke political made up trash.

I’m starting to think the Machi/two spirit person was displaced. Once we has wise elders to guide them in their role and place in society. And now they have no wise elders so they are trying to push into society and make a place for themselves. For the first time I think there should be 3 places. The male, the female, and the two spirit/Machi person. Just as males have clear direction on manhood, as do women, we need to have clear direction for these two spirit people as well. It’s better they not take over the women’s class, nor take over the men’s class, but they be acknowledged in their own. According to how the ancients did it and it worked, we should adopt THOSE ways of old. Then masculine men won’t be threatened or offended, and feminine women won’t be offended. But we give them a place in society in the middle ground. This has been lost, so it may be hard to rebuild this. But I think the way it’s being done right now isn’t a balanced way that’s good for society.

The Māhū is not a part of the LGBT community. Māhū is Māhū. It's not a gay, lesbian or Queer term. Daka ?
Kind of. LGBT is about sexuality and gender.
Māhū is a cultural thing.
