Street photography with the Olympus Trip 35 film camera

  • I recently shot a roll of Kodak Colorplus 200 with my Olympus Trip 35 film camera. Street photography has long been a favourite genre of mine, although as you'll see that tends to lean more towards street portraiture.
    With it's 40mm f2.8 lens and scale focus system, the Trip 35 probably isn't the best suited camera for this type of photography.
    The main issue that I ran into was that I was often too close to my subjects and they were out of focus due to the camera's 1m minimum focus distance.
    Basically I just needed to back off another 50cm or so, but because this was only my second role of film and I hadn't reviewed any of my photos taken with the Trip 35 beforehand, I didn't realise this at the time.
    Having said that there are still a few images I'm really pleased with. 'Tumeric man' is probably my favourite from the day.
    As always, thanks to my mate Adam for filming the video. We had a good laugh that morning as I'm sure you can tell.
    Thanks for watching and stay tuned for the next video, most likely of me sooting some Ilford XP2 black and white film with the Trip 35.

    Excellent video Tom. Keep up the good work and keep promoting film. Quick rule for no getting too close with the Trip 35. Use your arm length. “If I can touch it, I’m too close to shoot it.”

    • @tomedwards81
      @tomedwards81  5 років тому +3

      Thanks for the tip. I didn’t realise was getting too close at the time because this was only my second roll of film so I hadn’t had a chance to review my photos! I’ve since altered my style to be further away from subjects and hope to get more sharp shots as a result. Thanks for your support 👍🏼

      I also give myself about 5% around the edges that I plan to crop in post. Tend to "shoot for the moment and crop for the composition."

    Great jaunt. I remember studying in Austria in 1993. I took a weekend off to make a short loop down into italy over the weekend with some fellow students. I remember forgetting to pack my camera so I bought a cheep film camera in Rome. I think I payed $100 for it and only ended up only using it to take 36 shots of my companions.
    Well I saw a gold version of the Trip 35 on eBay today for $125.
    I didn't buy it but they made me an offer for $99.99.
    Not thinking it best to spend money on a film camera I counter offered $25.
    Surprisingly the Japanese site agreed.
    What a steel. The gentlemen told me I lucked out as he was 1/2 asleep at 2 am in Japan.
    Well il have to run a role of film through it with some companions and send them the photoes creating memories again like I once did. Your photoes prove it's easy not to miss with a good tool.

    • @tomedwards81
      @tomedwards81  4 роки тому +2

      I take them to a lab where they develop the film. Then I scan the negatives myself at home. That puts the images onto my computer, which you could easily send to a phone. If you don’t have a film scanner and don’t want to get one, I believe there’s a smartphone app which scans negatives but I’m not sure about the quality. Probably would do for a beginner who’s jut learning and experimenting. You’d still need to get the film developed though, either by a lab or you can do it yourself at home. Black and white film is quite easy to develop yourself, colour is harder. Have fun 🙂

    • @tomedwards81
      @tomedwards81  4 роки тому +1

      What lighting conditions are you shooting in? 200 ASA isn’t that fast, so anything less than broad daylight could produce blurry shots. Are you shooting a Trip 35? There are only two shutter speeds - 1/200 and 1/40 of a second. If the camera is choosing 1/40 (which it will in low light) then your shots might be blurry due to camera shake. It’s actually quite hard to hold an old film camera perfectly still without image stabilisation. My advice - try a 400 speed film and shoot outdoors in the sun. You shouldn’t get blurry shots then. Hope this helps!

    • @MrCookeemonster
      @MrCookeemonster 4 роки тому +1

      @@tomedwards81 Yes tom, I should've went with a superia 400 instead. Even at infinity, it looked like I shot it at 1 meter. Maybe I'm not used to zone focusing. I shot it on a fairly sunny day, so I thought it would be safe to try it out. Thanks Tom!

    • @tomedwards81
      @tomedwards81  4 роки тому

      Zone focussing is actually quite tricky. After experimenting I usually kept it at the red setting. Using a fast film, shooting in bright light and using the general purpose red focus setting will increase the depth of field and therefore increase you chance of a sharp shot. Good luck and have fun!

    I was taking pictures with this camera but for some reason it was all blurry. I used the kodak color plus in the focus mode of infinity and my iso was 200 can someone tell me what im doing wrong?

    • @tomedwards81
      @tomedwards81  4 роки тому

      Hard to say without seeing the pics. In infinity mode anything close will be out of focus. Try using the red focus setting. With a 200 speed film the camera could be selecting 1/40 shutter speed if it's not that bright a scene. This can introduce motion blur if you're completely still. Try using a faster film speed like 400. Failing that, the lens could be faulty.

    How do you change the settings on the camera? I can't see the ISO wheel or the Shutter speed dial

    • @tomedwards81
      @tomedwards81  4 роки тому

      The ASA (ISO) dial is near the front of the lens. Twist it to select between 25 and 400. You can’t control shutter speed on the Trip. It automatically chooses either 1/200 or 1/40 of a second based on the available light level.

      @@tomedwards81 That's awesome!! so all i have to set is my f stop and my Iso and then it does the rest?

    • @tomedwards81
      @tomedwards81  4 роки тому

      Pretty much. Although I’m unsure whether changing the aperture has any effect unless you’re using a flash. Don’t quote me on that, but the Trip was designed to be an automatic casual snapper for holidays and day to day life. I’d recommend leaving the aperture to ‘A’ and letting the camera decide what aperture to use. That’s how it excels.

      I have a black one. Did not know that black ones are rare. Which colors are there?

    • @aussie8114
      @aussie8114 5 років тому

      Jennifer K. Just chrome and black. The black ones were only made for about one year and not very popular because everyone liked chrome cameras then. So now they are much more rare. Generally they are about 3 times more dollars than the chrome ones in similar condition. But like everything if you sell something you need to hope the buyers are out there looking.

    People should roll the film back into the can!! Otherwise, you might think it's an unused film and reuse it..

      @@tomedwards81 You don't always want double exposure. Sure, double expose can be cool, but you can also do that in Photoshop.

    That film is horrible. Try sharper film like Portra 160, ektar 100, Pan F 50. You will be amazed what that little camera can do. You should check or have lens collimated too. Great vid.
