Homemade Hurdy Gurdy

- This is my third hurdy gurdy. I made it as a school project because I study Folk music at Rättviks gymnasium in Sweden.
I´ve made some other instruments as well. Mostly bagpipes. It´s my new model wich was an experiment at the begining. But it turned out to sound quite good and I like the design so I´m planning to do more hurdy gurdys with this model as a standard.
It has 3 melodi strings, 3 drone strings and 2 trompette strings.
Music; Me with the hurdy gurdy on the video.
The songs was recorded 2 days after the hurdy gurdy was "born" so it´s not fully adjusted yet.
Please comment!!!
Hope you liked it =)
/Magnus Smedman
I made it from scratch. This is an experiment for this new model.
I made all the details on it except the shaft, but I drew the plans for the shaft.
And I didn´t make the tuning pegs of the reason that I didn´t have time to make them. But that is also the only things that I didn´t made myself.
Thanks for watching =)
Hi, heavynov! Hope you liked it! I used cello- strings for melody- and drone- strings. And the material around the strings is cotton =) /Magnus
Beautiful!! I am looking into making an HG and good plans are rather scarce. Are your plans available for purchase?
Amazing talent, great craftsmanship.
Thanks =) Well, I hope to start making a new one soon =) It´s very fun!
Very inspirational dude, gives one a bit of confidence to have a go at making a Gurdy. I've started one but mine is extremely simple. Just to start with, then maybe if this works I'll tackle something like yours.
Long way to go yet, but thanks for sharing this brilliant video...
Thanks! It´s fantastic to see that so many people liked this video =)
I´ll make a new video soon =)
If you take a G/C Hurdy Gurdy & tune it down a step to F/Bb then you can play Scotland the brave in the Original Key.
i have been looking around for a good model and came across you. fine job, man! you should start selling!
Mekti bra Magnus! Thou art multi talented. Respect.
Excellent! I like the way you made the key box, with minimal contact to the sound board.
Hi! Thanks for watching =) It took me around one month to make this one. But it took several months to make the plans for it.
Cut once, measure twice is a great slogan to live by.
Fantastic work. Loved watching the video, was very interesting to see the entire build.
Thanks! I think it still needs some more base in the low sounds, but i´m getting there =)
what are the tunes for the strings
And where did you find the spacing for the keys (I can't find it) and the what the size of your hurdy ?
I liked it very much. Great work! I really like the shape you designed.
FANTASTIC JOB !!
My friend plays Hurdy Gurdy and made his first one.
I recently had a go on one of his Gurdys and I was surprised at how easy it is to play. I just love that medieval sound, especially when you get that buzz going :0)
Thanks for sharing this vid. I'd love to have a Hurdy Gurdy but I can't afford one and I haven't got the skill you have to make one.
Magnus!! you have an absolute gift !! this is my favorite instrument, and have been looking for years to purchase one unfortunately havnt been able to find one in my price range...and after seeing the work you put into it I see why they are soo expensive, its a lot of work!! check out my favorite band that uses a hurdy gurdy, its a celtic metal band (Eluveitie - thousandfold) thankyou for sharing! P.S keep the long hair!
Terrific work! I enjoyed seeing how all the components came together.
Well done, looks awesome.
Nothing but respect man
¡Maravilloso!
AMAZING! This work is just amazing, there is nothing else to say. I tried to build a hurdy gurdy too long time ago, but i never finished because I'm lazy and is sooooooooooo hard and precision work. Now that i ve seen this video I definitely want to try again! Do you have some suggestions? layouts? anything I can use to restart the project? Thank you to exist :)
nice work!! ive started my hurdy gurdy and your ideas for construction are very good !!☺
Amazing low register, mellow and no so sharp comparing to other hurdy gurdy's i heard. Realy good work! I would love to have one from you someday ;)
Regards from Poland
Adam
Amazing job! Congratulations
Wow! That's a amazing! I'm loving the song.. is it you playing? Great job!
Beautiful! Well done!
+Nikola Petrov Thank you =D
wow very fine work. Beautiful piece. please post something with its sound.
Thank you =) I´ll keep trying =)
I love it. thanks for the inspiration! I
I'm impressed! I love gurdys - they sound marvelous! I love how you vanished it. Were the burls in the wood or did you do that w the varnish?
I can't tell you how exciting it would be to live in a place that encourages the arts & crafts. Is tuition free or expensive like here in the US? Keep up the good work. It's really stunning.
I love the sound of the hurdy gurdy. It is so mesmerizing. I would love to find plans on how to build one. I currently play the didgeridoo and want to pick up the bag pipes, but hurdy gurdy is next on my list.
Ditto !! I play Didge too and I've had a hankering after a Hurdy Gurdy for years. I'll never be able to afford to buy one so my only option is to make one. I'm gathering ideas and info at the moment on the mechanics of how they work, then I want to make one from recycled materials :O) I've made two Toilet seat guitars and I'm currently working on a 3 string electro acoustic tennis racket guitar.
SONGSTICKS That's cool. I pick around on the guitar. One of my uncle's just turned 70. He's a musician. He's built left handed banjos and violins. He plays guitar. I thought about asking him to put one together with me. He's a pretty good wood worker.
BRAVO MY FREND................................
+KOSTAS ZARK Thanks a lot =)
Excellent!!! I really enjoyed watching this... now I want one... :0)
Hi, great job. Can you share please constructions plans. Awesome!
Hey, amazing work! Really professional! What did you use for the axle ? And how did you fix it ? Thanks a lot!
Good work. Thanks for sharing.
+MrKDB001 Thanks for watching =D
Excellent craftsmanship
I love wood. I love the hurdy gurdy. You are young yet you seem the master of your craft. That is wonderful. I have attended concerts with bands who have a hurdy gurdy player. Fascinating instrument I am captivated by it. Is it difficult to play?
Wonderful! I would buy it!
I’m planning on making my own soon. This is really cool
you are the best! I hope I build a hurdy gurdy myself too.
It looks great! I hope U r still enjoying building the HG.
Well done! you are a talented craftsman!
I'd love to be able to build one too x.x i love this instrument
i need instructions now! xD welldone mate
Beautiful work.
What type of strings do you use? Are there special strings for hurdy Gurdy?
Looks good. What kind of varnish did you use?
I’m thinking’ about doing this to my ukulele, how would i put the wheel on, this sounds gorgious
Great job...beautiful!
+Lorenzo Costa Thanks =)
hi, I know it's been a decade, but do you still have the plans to make this hurdy gurdy? if so are you willing to share them?
väldigt bra jobbat! då blir man nästan lite avundsjuk.
+Johánn Hrímland Tackar =D
Great work!!
Great! :)
Congratulations. ;)
Wish I went to school in Rättvik. :)
Well, I did, at least for 10 days of Ethno Sweden. ;)
What is the plan of your hurdy gurdy? is it on any web page?
Sounds awesmoe! Might I ask, what kind of strings you use? And, if the strings touch the wooden wheel directly, or if there is anything inbetween string and wood (like horsehair of a bow or bow rosin). In your video it looked like as if there was thread around the strings where the wheel touched them, so it made me wonder
Great job! Looks beautiful. What finish did you apply for the white keys? I am making a Nerdy Gurdy and looking into a nice finish for the white keys... thanks!
Do you sell them? I'm potentially interested. Although, I would prefer to pay to learn to make one myself ;)
Hello, I congratulate you on your work, it was super great! and excuse me could you share the plans of the key box? thank you very much and success!
Magnus Does your Hurdy have a buzz bridge ? I am thinking of trying to have a go at making a hurdy myself, but trying to work out the mechanics of the buzz bridge(how does it work)?
+vessel1973 Hi! It´s very simple really =) It´s a small wooden bridge that starts to vibrate when you accelerate the wheel. On the standard- French- model you can adjust the accuracy of the bridge by a small "tuning peg" ocn the tailpiece )=
the dog, or buzz bridge, is just loosely fit into the bridge mount on the trompette strings. it works because you aren't actually gluing anything in place, and the tension of the trompettes are the only things that actually hold them in place, so when you add an impulse to the wheel, the string either leaves the dog, or applies additional pressure to it (depending on the direction of the wheel) forcing the dog to vibrate against the wooden pallet that gives the buzz.
Hey :) i'm looking to build a hurdy gurdy, i'm often wondering about how to make the tangents spring back free from the melody strings once the notes over, everything else i can find online but there's nothing about this. Does that mean its unneccessary to work in a mechanism to do it and they return naturally ooooorrrrrrrr..... anyway any help would be appreciated, nice work man!
Yep. Gravity does it. No springs or mechanisms.
wow, respect !
Hello Magnum great job, congratulations, I wonder if you do Hurdy Gurdy custom, met this instrument recently and fell in love.
first of all the hurdy gurdy looks amazing and sounds beautiful but from where did you get the plans for building it ??
Skulle man kunna få ritningar på den? Och kanske lite tips på material. Sitter här och försöker göra en av snus dosor och kartonger. Än så länge är det en halv spänd sträng som jag kan värsta whamy effecten med. ^^
Snyggt!
I LOVE the tone on this. I am in the process of drafting up my own plans to construct one. If I may ask, what scale length did you use?
It´s wonderful!!! I want it too! :-D
You rule!!!
This is a brilliant piece of work. Did you get some initial plans off the Internet and then adapt them. I would like to do the same.
Thank you!!! I´ll check it right now!
Could you tell us if that the music is performed by you as well? What strings do you use? How long is the strings menzura?
Thanks =D
Yes, I´m playing the music as well, and I play it on the same HG as in the video =) The lenght of the melodi strings are 460 millimeters =)
/Magnus
do you have any plans that can be printed and than glued to wood?
magnussmedman@live.se
Hope you liked it =)
/Magnus
wow
Where did you get the axle I can't find them anywhere.
I saw the Drehleier/Hurdy for the very 1st this evening.
Oh, how I do love it so.
Can I ask:
How much do you charge to make one?
Would you make me one, if I can afford it?
I liked it - very much !! :-)
love it! mine sounds like sqauks and sweeks
How do you make the "keyboard"?
sounds and looks great, congrats!
Let me ask, why you placed bridge is so close to wheel? you wantet to achieve special sound? Regards from Poland, D.
Thanks =D It was an experiment, but it failed XD But it was easy to move so now it´s like on a "normal" HG =)
Magnus Smedman i asked this above in another post,
But,...
would you be willing to sell me one? And for how much?
I am so in love with this instrument and I love how your looks slim and easy to handle. I am a Pancreatic patient and weak, but spend so much time laid up and hospitalized and THIS would be so perfect for me...
Giving something amazing to do, in my very boring and painful life.
If you do sell them, AND “if” I can afford it, AND “if” you could make me one in a purple-like color, it would also be 1 AMAZING thing to place in our Project Purple Umbrella silent auction for raising awareness to this deadly disease!!!
You can read about my little organization at purpleumbrella.org and on Facebook at facebook.com/ProjectPurpleUmbrella
We also have just started a Facebook support grouo called PAIN-creatitis, where our members can come to share their experiences!
Pancreatic disease is a very rare, very painful incurable disease and the pain is even worse than that of cancer, so my doctor sort of pushed me into starting this project, where I host a yearly conference at Duke University’s Searle Center and a Children’s Panky Picnic at the North Carolina Zoo.
I do it all out of my own pocket and sell my clothing and jewelry on Ebay to raise the funds I need to host these events!
This would be a fabulous thing not just for me, but also for whomever would bid on it (and win it)...
I usually will buy a Randy Jackson or Keith Urban guitar, and place those in our silent auctions..
BUT NOW,.... seeing THIS GORGEOUS PIECE, I know for sure that it is the best thing we could have!!!!
Especially, if you could do as Urban and Jackson have done, by making them in purple,... which is the color for our Internationally Recognized Awareness Ribbon!!!
Please let me know... VERY EXCITED, hoping that you can and that it is at a do-able price point for me!!!!!!
Just love it so very much!!!

Very nice work, how long did it take?
Thanks!!! =) It took 8 weeks to make it =)
/Magnus
Hi man great work, I'm from Uruguay and here is impossible to buy one, how you built it? Have you got any instructions?
+Christian Hernández I made the plans for it myself, and they are not really complete. I made this one by watching other makers/luthiers =)
+Magnus Smedman Congratulations it look great! Enjoy playing it!
Christian Hernández yes free plans on internet type in Jiri Hurdy Gurdy
wonderful dude ! Jättebra !! I would like to make one. Do you have some pattern or indication ?
How long did it take you to make it
vERY VERY VERY VERY FINE AND GOOD JOB!
Господи, это просто прекрасный инструмент.
I mean, it's a great work. Are there anything like templates for this masterpiece or you had done it only with your eye?
Антон Смирнов Hi! Thank you very much! This one i have made all by my self, even the drawings/templets =)
As I had said, it sounds awesome :-) And it looks great too! And thank you very much for the information, I'm trying to make a hurdy-gurdy/guitar hybrid, but I could not find quality information on the hurdy-gurdy so far. Might I ask, how you attached the cotton to the string and if you use bow rosin on the wood?
what would it cost to have one built by you sir? would you be interested at all?
+Chad Keel Hi! It depends on which model, but it would be fun to build more of these indeed=)
Much Skilled
So celtic
Wow
-Doge
Om du skulle bygga en sådan åt tex mig...hur mycket skulle det kosta?
Shiiiiiet, brusch. Jag är mäkta imponerad! Jag är också riktigt imponerad av hur bra du kan spela.
Spelar du i band? Det hade varit kul att höra mer, både solo och i ensemble!
Vänliga hälsningar,
Björn
Tja! Tackar =D jag spelar inte i något band just nu, men är lite sugen på det XD
Mvh
/Magnus
Geared Pegs would help it hold tune better
ok. I ve just found that thees are cello strings. Is this your playing and your instrument we hear?
thanx u u r Masterpeace
GG!
It looks and sounds quite remarkably for a so-called "homemade" hurdy gurdy... Let me know if you have a spare one. ;)
+Boris Rodrigues Haha, Thank you =D
Im interested in purchasing one myself, how can i contact you?
