  • This is my third hurdy gurdy. I made it as a school project because I study Folk music at Rättviks gymnasium in Sweden.
    I´ve made some other instruments as well. Mostly bagpipes. It´s my new model wich was an experiment at the begining. But it turned out to sound quite good and I like the design so I´m planning to do more hurdy gurdys with this model as a standard.
    It has 3 melodi strings, 3 drone strings and 2 trompette strings.
    Music; Me with the hurdy gurdy on the video.
    The songs was recorded 2 days after the hurdy gurdy was "born" so it´s not fully adjusted yet.
    Please comment!!!
    Hope you liked it =)

    I made it from scratch. This is an experiment for this new model.
    I made all the details on it except the shaft, but I drew the plans for the shaft.
    And I didn´t make the tuning pegs of the reason that I didn´t have time to make them. But that is also the only things that I didn´t made myself.
    Thanks for watching =)

    Hi, heavynov! Hope you liked it! I used cello- strings for melody- and drone- strings. And the material around the strings is cotton =) /Magnus

    If you take a G/C Hurdy Gurdy & tune it down a step to F/Bb then you can play Scotland the brave in the Original Key.

    FANTASTIC JOB !!
    My friend plays Hurdy Gurdy and made his first one.
    I recently had a go on one of his Gurdys and I was surprised at how easy it is to play. I just love that medieval sound, especially when you get that buzz going :0)
    Thanks for sharing this vid. I'd love to have a Hurdy Gurdy but I can't afford one and I haven't got the skill you have to make one.

    I love the sound of the hurdy gurdy. It is so mesmerizing. I would love to find plans on how to build one. I currently play the didgeridoo and want to pick up the bag pipes, but hurdy gurdy is next on my list.

      @SONGSTICKS 7 років тому +1

      Ditto !! I play Didge too and I've had a hankering after a Hurdy Gurdy for years. I'll never be able to afford to buy one so my only option is to make one. I'm gathering ideas and info at the moment on the mechanics of how they work, then I want to make one from recycled materials :O) I've made two Toilet seat guitars and I'm currently working on a 3 string electro acoustic tennis racket guitar.

      SONGSTICKS That's cool. I pick around on the guitar. One of my uncle's just turned 70. He's a musician. He's built left handed banjos and violins. He plays guitar. I thought about asking him to put one together with me. He's a pretty good wood worker.

    Sounds awesmoe! Might I ask, what kind of strings you use? And, if the strings touch the wooden wheel directly, or if there is anything inbetween string and wood (like horsehair of a bow or bow rosin). In your video it looked like as if there was thread around the strings where the wheel touched them, so it made me wonder

    Magnus Does your Hurdy have a buzz bridge ? I am thinking of trying to have a go at making a hurdy myself, but trying to work out the mechanics of the buzz bridge(how does it work)?

    • @magnussmedman6858
      @magnussmedman6858 8 років тому +2

      +vessel1973 Hi! It´s very simple really =) It´s a small wooden bridge that starts to vibrate when you accelerate the wheel. On the standard- French- model you can adjust the accuracy of the bridge by a small "tuning peg" ocn the tailpiece )=

    • @Horologyguy84
      @Horologyguy84 6 років тому +1

      the dog, or buzz bridge, is just loosely fit into the bridge mount on the trompette strings. it works because you aren't actually gluing anything in place, and the tension of the trompettes are the only things that actually hold them in place, so when you add an impulse to the wheel, the string either leaves the dog, or applies additional pressure to it (depending on the direction of the wheel) forcing the dog to vibrate against the wooden pallet that gives the buzz.

    Hey :) i'm looking to build a hurdy gurdy, i'm often wondering about how to make the tangents spring back free from the melody strings once the notes over, everything else i can find online but there's nothing about this. Does that mean its unneccessary to work in a mechanism to do it and they return naturally ooooorrrrrrrr..... anyway any help would be appreciated, nice work man!

      Magnus Smedman i asked this above in another post,
      But,...
      would you be willing to sell me one? And for how much?
      I am so in love with this instrument and I love how your looks slim and easy to handle. I am a Pancreatic patient and weak, but spend so much time laid up and hospitalized and THIS would be so perfect for me...
      Giving something amazing to do, in my very boring and painful life.
      If you do sell them, AND “if” I can afford it, AND “if” you could make me one in a purple-like color, it would also be 1 AMAZING thing to place in our Project Purple Umbrella silent auction for raising awareness to this deadly disease!!!
      You can read about my little organization at purpleumbrella.org and on Facebook at facebook.com/ProjectPurpleUmbrella
      We also have just started a Facebook support grouo called PAIN-creatitis, where our members can come to share their experiences!
      Pancreatic disease is a very rare, very painful incurable disease and the pain is even worse than that of cancer, so my doctor sort of pushed me into starting this project, where I host a yearly conference at Duke University’s Searle Center and a Children’s Panky Picnic at the North Carolina Zoo.
      I do it all out of my own pocket and sell my clothing and jewelry on Ebay to raise the funds I need to host these events!
      This would be a fabulous thing not just for me, but also for whomever would bid on it (and win it)...
      I usually will buy a Randy Jackson or Keith Urban guitar, and place those in our silent auctions..
      BUT NOW,.... seeing THIS GORGEOUS PIECE, I know for sure that it is the best thing we could have!!!!
      Especially, if you could do as Urban and Jackson have done, by making them in purple,... which is the color for our Internationally Recognized Awareness Ribbon!!!
      Please let me know... VERY EXCITED, hoping that you can and that it is at a do-able price point for me!!!!!!
      Just love it so very much!!!
