I don't really know why but I find war hammers to be beautiful in their diversity. Just the variation in the head construction. There is often, to me, a grotesque beauty to them. Hope some day to add one to my collection.
They are very diverse and the designs speak heavily to their intended use. "grotesque beauty" may be the most apt description for weapons that are art at the same time.
Arms and Armour (the czechs, not the americans) make more beautiful and cheaper polearms. Their daggers are beautiful aswell in part. Their swords and armour are hideously ugly though ^^
Decoration was not that extremely rare, with warhammers and pollaxes. They were the weapons of the wealthy, after all. Most polearms were the weapons of the masses, but not these.
This was a lot of fun to watch, I find your reviews always have the best camera work and content. Are you planning on reviewing your Windlass Battlecry arming sword? I'm curious about the line, but I can't find enough reviews of it, and it would be cool to see your take.
Looking at one of them on a table is alarming. Advancing towards many of them in a formation ready to receive the advance and expected to engage.. crikey. The aesthetics are interesting, as if to constrain and form the sheer brutality of the thing.. sort of gives it a tension?
The top spike is useful, but it is relatively short compared to other pole arms. I feel that this weapon is more heavily focused on the hammer portion, and in that regard it works well.
This is just me speculating, but would a longer spike really help snag and dismount an opponent any more than the shorter spike on this weapon? Also, since the weapon is more massive than many polearms with top-spikes, wouldn't that increase the risk of bending a longer spike in the case that a bad swing (from slightly too far away) resulted in only clipping the target with the top spike rather than the hammer head?
It's not so much about snagging an opponent as it is being able to drive deep. Its a rather fat top spike which my guess means that it take move effort to slip into armour joints. you are correct that you might bend the top spike, but I doubt that is too likely. But I think that it really comes down to the hammer being the focus of this weapon.
You seem to be hitting a bit to far away, in your tests. You're hitting the back of the "head", rather than the "head". In fact, you seem to be mainly hitting the helmet, with the pole. You should maybe have tried getting used to the range a bit, before getting to the test, proper.
8:10 no, linguets are ment to hold the head on the shaft, protection against cuts is a secondary bonus... 8:34 no, because if the languets are not linked to the head, the head is not connected to the shaft and... falls 8:03 what ? usually there ar on the four sides ? That's rather the exception than the rule, and yes if you have them on four sides then the additional ones are mainely ment to protect the shaft and yes thos two could be seperate pieces...
Could use a butt spike or at least a cap. Which would protect the end of the shaft from damage and allow for butt thrusts to an opponent's throat or face.

My understanding is that back in the time of the original they weren't to fussed whether you called it a War-hammer or a Pole-hammer because it is both. Today people tend to classify it as a Pole-hammer so there isn't any confusion with the shorter version. As to calling it a Poll-axe it isn't relay correct, though some people do, because it doesn't have an Axe blade. Hope this helps.

Donating? "Lent" (as in the conjugation of "to lend") is the word you're looking for. (not borrowed, BTW. You borrowed it. He lent it) Donating involves transferral of ownership. If it was donated, it'd be yours. Lending involves allowing temporary use, whilst still retaining the ownership.
Uh, no, it's not easy to pierce quality plate armor. The only scenario in which I can picture the back spike on this weapon going through any good plate is if you were charging at your opponent on a horse.

Polearms are often aestetically very pleasing. As most medieval hardware is.
