Thanks for reaching out to me buddy and using my footage, as you can see my pictus family are thriving, sorry about the water slightly cloudy i had just done some tank maintenance. i got them when they was just tiny babys and they have grown and grown to now, the information is spot on accuarate and great video!!! one of there favourite foods i have found is mussel (frozen then thawed) and epecially bloodworm! hope you all enjoyed seeing my babys doing what they do best :) they never hide are always active and around on show :) thanks again for the shout out!!! big love to the fish keeping community!!! happy fishkeeping!!
@@gethighonlife11 i know your comment was 9 months ago, but could you let me know what sort of Africans you keep them with? I'm planning a 120 gallon mbuna tank and really want some of these but I'm not sure if they will work or not
@@Charlie.skillin I'm keeping (2) Auratus Cichlids, (25) German Red Peacock Cichlids and (1) Kenyi Cichlid, along with (1) Synodontis Catfish, 2 Pictus Catfish and (1) Red Tail Shark in the same tank. They seem to get along pretty well. Don't quote me, but I believe that any African Cichlid that doesn't grow too big and provided that you have enough space for marking of territories ( if they breed ), you should be good. Be careful! It appears that Mbuna Cichlids are very aggressive. One of the Auratus Cichlids is the tank boss in my aquarium, even though there are about 25 German Red Peacock Cichlids in the same tank ( they bred ). The Pictus Catfish should work, but the key is to have enough spaces and caves for everyone because certain fish do seem to claim certain areas of the tank. The Pictus Catfish may stay at the bottom of the tank most of the time, but if they butt heads with the Mbuna Cichlids over a certain space, there could be problems.
I have a 29 gallon with 1 pictus, 2 corydoras, 1 angel, 1 bala, 1 bristlenose pleco and 5 red skirt tetras. They all get along really well but I also have a nice wooden hiding place/shelter that the pictus likes to stay in. I don't see it ever chasing the other fish out though, it just chills. Very cool catfish!
My pictus is one of my favorites! He is definitely a lot of fun. He’s a long pictus and he just loves being in a community tank. He’s a confident man! And about 7” long. As long as he has a spacious tank he doesn’t mind being alone. No shyness or anything. Doesn’t do well in anything under 50 gallons for anyone considering. When I got mine he came in a 29 gallon tank and over time I learned this was terrible for him. Upgraded and he’s a new fish! Bigger is better when it comes to fish!
I actually keep 4 of them. They are doing well so far, I had them for about 2 years now. The biggest one is just about 5 inches and the other three are around 4 inches. I feed them blood worms once a week and pellets the rest of the week.
Palmer Aquatics, I have 2 Pictus Catfish and they are swimming to the top. Last night I fed them Algae rounds and one of my catfish Jerry was going to bottom to eat it and went back up to the top. Tom didn’t try to go the bottom to have a bite off the algae round.
I have 1 pictus cat in my community tank. We've had him for about 2 yrs now and he only comes out when the lights are are off. During the day he stays in his little stump. I thought about buying a few more but I'm terrified it'll disrupt what he's used to and so I think we'll just stick with one for now. But they are stunningly beautiful! And he's a nice size. His whiskers are a good 6 to 7 inches easily!
I bought two of these and they became monsters. One was 7 inches and the other was 11 inches. This thing was a monster it ate everything in the tank. Great fish. I had two of them in a 150.
Have three for a couple weeks now they are amazing. First day my dwarf crayfish grabbed and held one with both claws and I thought it was a goner for sure but still swimming and eating and doing well.
I had 2 Angelic Pictus catfish, 1 of them grew up to 9 inches, and the other was about 7. They always hung out with my pleco in his slate rock cave. They never bothered any of my other fish (Angle fish, Tiger barbs, Albino barbs, Green moss barbs Siamese Algae Eaters), great semi aggressive fish to have.
I have one, I got him from a Walmart when I didn't know any better with 2 30¢ goldfish in a fifteen gallon with plastic plats, then I actually looked into fishkeeping and realized this was no way to treat these fish so I bought them their own 50 gallon (I couldn't fit anything larger because my mom said no, but it's still much better for them) and put sand and live plants instead of colorful gravel and they are all three much happier now and I make sure their tank is clean and healthy for them and I feed them the food I found with the least fillers and an occasional frozen brine shrimp treat (the brine shrimp is mostly for my Betta fish)
Great video Chris. I have kept pictus cats fish for 8 or 9 years and they are amazing just like the video you showed, day or night they are active. I successfully kept them in a mixed African cichlid tank (probably got luck) then with an Oscar and with community fish. Regarding their size there is another cat called the 4 -line or sometimes mislabeled as a stripped pictus catfish because they are the same color, shape and behavior. they can grow to over a foot. I had a pair for about 5 years same behavior just larger. Thanks for the video. Also for anyone who wants these fish DO NOT catch or move them with a net.
Would you recommend them for a pond? I don't have harsh winters and lowest I get are the 60s normally. I'm in the process of getting a heater and I'll move my fatheads into it to see how they do first. I really need a clean up crew in there, and most others will definitely eat eggs. The other bottom feeders have mouths perfectly adapt to eat eggs, and with the male fatheads being super protective of eggs, I think pictus are my best beat.
Just got a 40 Gallon aquarium just for pictus. 23 years ago as I 12 year old I had a 15 gallon tank with 1 4.5" pictus, a goldfish, a suckered, and 6 neons maybe. THE PICTUS SND GOLDFISH ATE THEMSELVES TO DEATH. If your pictus or I guess goldfish can fit it in their gullet they will eat till they die.
@@lukejsmodels2331 They can't thrive in a 20gal. They get stunned growth where there body stops growing and organs continue to grow, and it normally can't be undone. At minium you need a 55 for one but they do best in groups. 100+ is the ideal for these guys.
I have successfully put my pictus catfish with cichlids. He has been in there since I started the tack and if the fish goes after them they either give up or they chase back.
Hi, i know you comment was over 2 years ago, but im planning a 120 gallon mbuna tank and really want some of these, but im not sure how well they will work. Are your cichlids African?
Excellent video, might wanna also add that these are skilless fish. I'm sure as you know scales fish mean a different sets of rules that must be applied in order to keep your fish alive 😉
If you’re going to drill the tanks for overflow then you could do it on the sides if there’s room between the bases of the tanks, it looks like there should be about an inch and a half so you could use 1 inch PVC Also, I’ve had pictus catsThat I’ve gotten to about 8 inches before in a 60 gallon tank, they’re not very aggressive but they will eat smaller fish if they can get them in their mouth easily
I have one. Hes very active and love bloodworms and hikari carnivore pellets. The only issue I have is my 4 line catfish (from the same family but get bigger than the pictus) was eating all the pellets but he got big enough he eats red worms now. The pictus is very entertaining. They are always moving. I keep them in a 55 gallon with 2 festivum cichlid, 2 koi angelfish, 2 pearl gourami and a blue gourami I saved off a lady my girlfriends mom knows.
Great Video, 10 years ago I bought 4 and put them in my 55 gal. tank...For some unknown reaso, 3 died within 6 weeks.....Then 6 years ago, I had my own health problems and was down to two fish,,then one..Mywife wanted me to take the tank down but I said the 'cat' fish is still alive and as long as if is alive, the tank will have to stay....Long story short, it died today, almost 10 years to the day I put him in. I don't know the average life span.
I've owned them before mine were about 4 to 5in in length. They are active during the day. However, it's at NIGHT when they start there feeding frenzy. And if you've got small tetras like neon's, cardinals, or guppies and like sized fish. And you see your Angelicus Pictus with a swollen belly it's almost a given he's eaten one of them overnight. So that being said, choose your community of fish WISELY folks...!!! Yes they can thrive in a community tank but do know that they can be predatory to smaller fish. And if hungry enough will try and eat anything they can fit into there mouths.
Palmer Aquatics, I have another question about Pictus Catfish. How many times a day should I feed my 2 catfish boys? When I fed them a whole algae round I noticed that their stomachs got bigger.
I purchased several from pets Mart some died some I gave away I have 1 left he leaves smaller fish alone as long as I feed him well, he is 5 1/2" to 6" now and I love it's character.
I have a pictus and I feed him boiled chicken and worms , he’s getting so big and he will eat until his stomach bulges. I think that’s not good tho . But sometimes I try to space the food out like he’s in the wild, I’ll feed him a big meal and then wait a couple days , he’s been doing rlly good.😃
These guys are insanely sensitive to aquarium salt. I think they are pretty hardy for the most part but I Think people who’s pictus died had aquarium salt in their tank at the time. Mine lived a healthy life until I decided to put in salt to help heal my cichlids fins and it died within 30 minutes. No other fish was affected badly in any way.
I've had one for about 3 months now and if I walk up to the tank he Usain Bolt's all over the tank like Michael and Jason were on his tail, I like the way they look but I don't like the jerkiness, I give them a rating of 1.5 out of 5 and they cost around $10.00, if I could go back I would get another type of catfish.
I bought 4, so I would have a group. One died the first month. I figured I was ok with 3, and they lived together nicely for about 18 months, then I lost another one (his barbel got damaged during a water change and he never seemed to quite get over it.) So now I have just the 2 and have decided to do something else with the tank. No more Pictus cats (they do seem somewhat fragile.) But now I'm worried that I only have the 2. Don't get me wrong, I love them! I think they are beautiful fish! But I am torn between getting a couple more so I have 4 again, or just leaving them as a couple until they "expire", but I don't want to do that if they are miserable without being in a larger group. They do NOT swim around all happy like they should, they actually act like catfish. Hiding and being shy. If I get 2 more, will they all school together again? Or if I keep just the 2 will they be absolutely miserable????
I have a question. Would they do well with black neons and otos and a ph of around 6 but can go all the way down to 5.2/5.3. There are also blind cave tetras and if you don't know they like to bite every thing especially long flowy things (fins, whiskers, and val) And another question the tank is black water do you notice if catfish generally get better color in black water
I've got one in a 220lt 4ft long community tank. He actually enjoys being by himself but I am planing on getting him 4 more freund's on pay day after watching this video as I find hes more active at night. Only issue I'm having is I have two juvinal blue ram cichlids ones bigger then the other and if the small one comes to close he chasis him for about ten mins straight but the lil one has some good hiding spots I provided for him
I adopted a tank from a friend with one of these in it. He ate two of the black neon tetras that were in the tank. I had to move the remaining tetras to another tank, but now I'm not sure what I can keep in the tank with him. Currently there is a sailfin molly and 2 otos in with him. I am worried he's going to eat the otos too. I've made sure he gets plenty of food, but it doesn't seem to make a difference.
If you have one to two of the catfish you could take pictures of it but when there are too many of them they get excited and they move a lot when there's only two or one they move slowly and they take a break
I am looking for more information on this post there. I have one of them catfish and everything they're living in a tank with guppies and a cat on the bottom to clean the tank he is doing just fine just wondering how you tell him if they're a male or a female
I used to have two of these fish as a kid along with a little pleco I named the catfish polka dots and the pleco mr scared because he would literally jump out of the tank from the filter part at The back and one morning I woke up and didn’t see him in the tank and he was literally sitting on top of a pile of clothes by the dresser that I had the tank on still alive I was surprised
5:30- agree to disagree . I don’t wanna argue with you on this but I however have and father has cichlid tanks with pictus catfish and they’ve never been picked on chased by them nothing they’re out spazzes
I only ever had problems with the very first water change. Temp was good everything matched but yet all 6 died happened twice on the first water change.i just bought some last night to try again
My pictus hides in his cave all day & only comes out to feed at night. Is that normal? I only see him in the daytime if something spooks him. His only tank mate is my betta but they dont mess with each other
My pictus uaed to eat the feeders i got my chiclids. But they were awesome and after a few good pokes with their whiskers the aggresive fish left em alone
I had a pictus catfish he was a night mare I had a tank full of guppy’s and he used to eat them really late at night when they were sleeping on the surface he was about 5-6 inches I prefer hoblos
On your overflow are you doing hard PVC, or a hose from the tank to the PVC mounted on the wall??.. if you have a hose you might be able to put a quick detatch in the middle of the hose that way you can drill the back of your tank and keep everything hidden and it wouldn't be to hard to take the tank out if you had to do maintenance.
You know, I saw some Pictus in a local store that were really huge and they weren’t as pretty when large. Think they may have been about 7 inches. I suspect they were larger than average, this was a display tank.
I got one today. It was swimming about really fast at the pet shop but when it came home it found a shade spot at the bottom of aquarium and it has not move since. Does this mean the fish is dying
ok, i was at pet smart today and i was told that the pictus catfish isnt a schooling fish. so i have one by itself now, i was debating getting more catfish. whats the correct answer? yes it needs a school. no its happy being alone?
Hello, I got one of this and I love it but he lost his moustouches do you know if the grow up ??? :( or why they lost it ? Maybe the rocks? please answer.. I feel so sad for him.
The barbs help them find food, they have them their whole life It's possible they got ripped out by rocks if it got stuck or another fish could've gotten them.
these are really cool. I haven't been able to keep them alive because there always sick at Wal-Mart and won't eat. so I got two more and tube feeding them general cure and it seems to be working
Good vid bro, don't stress too much. From what it looks like, you will have enough 'pitch for the drain system. And remember,it took 40 days to build the ark...lol Cont success and gr8 luck
I’ve got 3 of these guys, one got to 7 inches! I’ve also got a 8 inch sun catfish who ate 2 of my Baka sharks. I’ve only got a 40 gallon tank so I don’t know how they got so big
My pictus glass surf but i have a bunch of plants and rocks and places to hide etc. but still glass surf and i did everything to make em feel happy i only have some small tetras in there with it so if any body knows please lmk
I got a long time ago kept it with Mollies and guppies had about 30 molies and 20 guppy’s in a 75 gal once that thing grew I had 0 guppy’s and 2 molies 😂
Could somebody give me some tips, I purchased 2 pictus catfish from my local petco the day before yesterday and this morning one of them has lost his tail fin completely and is swimming up against the filter and under a lot of stress, I noticed last night that he only had half a tail fin and I just assumed something had happened during his time at the petco, then this morning I noticed that and knew I had to act fast, let’s pause for a moment and I’ll tell you about my tank, I have 3 goldfish (2 black moor and 1 comet) I have 4 red eyed tetras and leopard danios as well and 1 dwarf female gourami(I already ruled out agression as she is very nice) I have 5 Cory catfish 1 bumbleee catfish, 1 common pleco, one Rafael catfish and 2 golden dojo loaches and three pictus catfish ( I bought another one today as I thought they were not going to do well at petco and I was there grabbing medicine) so I purchased melafix and removed all the carbon filter and started dosing, I removed the carbon filters and added amonia reducers the both filters ( I have a 20 gallon and a 10 gallon filter in my 20 gallon tall fish tank) I hope this will be enough to treat the fish the other 2 are much better but I do see sights of detioration in there tail fin, I have only had the tank established for a a few days so I’m hoping things go better as I treat them. Any help is appreciated if anyone has comments on the matter

I have three catfish and a rainbow cichlid the only problems I have are when the cichlid lays eggs
I have 3 Pictus with 2 fire mouth Chiclids and 2 Jack Dempsys and they all have been getting along.
I have a question. Would they do well with black neons and otos and a ph of around 6 but can go all the way down to 5.2/5.3. There are also blind cave tetras and if you don't know they like to bite every thing especially long flowy things (fins, whiskers, and val)
And another question the
tank is black water do you notice if catfish generally get better color in black water
Can catfish live in an outdoor pond in the winter time?
I have two pictus that are over six inches and yeah they eat a lot of small fish if u put them in there I put Dino in there and they are em all
If you have one to two of the catfish you could take pictures of it but when there are too many of them they get excited and they move a lot when there's only two or one they move slowly and they take a break
I have a pictus cat fish too in a community tank. His name is Gary after Spongebob's pet snail.
Can I keep a Pictus Catfish in a 32 gallon tank?
5:30- agree to disagree . I don’t wanna argue with you on this but I however have and father has cichlid tanks with pictus catfish and they’ve never been picked on chased by them nothing they’re out spazzes
Would a Pictus catfish be fine with a juevenile Oscar growing up together, or will the Oscar try to eat it
I kept these with severums for years and never had any issues also had bleeding heart tetras and festive um's in that tank.
I only ever had problems with the very first water change. Temp was good everything matched but yet all 6 died happened twice on the first water change.i just bought some last night to try again
My pictus hides in his cave all day & only comes out to feed at night. Is that normal? I only see him in the daytime if something spooks him. His only tank mate is my betta but they dont mess with each other
What are those pretty BLUE fish you have in there?????
My pictus uaed to eat the feeders i got my chiclids. But they were awesome and after a few good pokes with their whiskers the aggresive fish left em alone
Hey love my fish tank is at 78 degree because it's in my kitchen and it's always warmer in there could I have one in my tank with that degree
I have one in a tank with a blue acara, ellioti and some bloodfin tetras and you never see the Pictus except at night.
I have a 3.5” Pictus that hides all the time and rarely comes out. Is this abnormal for a pictus?
Do you know if I could keep a Raphael catfish with a pictus or will they fight
I just bought one and put it in my 10 gallon tank but mine is pretty small...once it gets bigger I’m definitely gonna get a bigger tank 😃
6% pitch (tiny) is sufficient and required in most states for sewer drainage
You know, I saw some Pictus in a local store that were really huge and they weren’t as pretty when large. Think they may have been about 7 inches. I suspect they were larger than average, this was a display tank.
I got one today. It was swimming about really fast at the pet shop but when it came home it found a shade spot at the bottom of aquarium and it has not move since. Does this mean the fish is dying
That’s a great space for fish! I’m jelly!
hi can you advise me on what predator fish i need to keep in a 5ft tank full of bn pleco babies, i already have an angel fish but he is to small
ok, i was at pet smart today and i was told that the pictus catfish isnt a schooling fish. so i have one by itself now, i was debating getting more catfish. whats the correct answer? yes it needs a school. no its happy being alone?
Mine was very fond of Cardinal tetras. I re homed him.

Hello,
I got one of this and I love it but he lost his moustouches do you know if the grow up ??? :( or why they lost it ? Maybe the rocks? please answer.. I feel so sad for him.
The barbs help them find food, they have them their whole life
It's possible they got ripped out by rocks if it got stuck or another fish could've gotten them.
these are really cool. I haven't been able to keep them alive because there always sick at Wal-Mart and won't eat. so I got two more and tube feeding them general cure and it seems to be working
charles parson why you buying fish from a walmart
Good vid bro, don't stress too much. From what it looks like, you will have enough 'pitch for the drain system. And remember,it took 40 days to build the ark...lol Cont success and gr8 luck
what is that Blue fish?
Could you do corydoras with them are they too small?
I have cichlids and pictus catfish and there doing just fine

I’ve got 3 of these guys, one got to 7 inches! I’ve also got a 8 inch sun catfish who ate 2 of my Baka sharks. I’ve only got a 40 gallon tank so I don’t know how they got so big
My pictus glass surf but i have a bunch of plants and rocks and places to hide etc. but still glass surf and i did everything to make em feel happy i only have some small tetras in there with it so if any body knows please lmk
I have mine with a red devil and some other cichlids. They're not at the bottom like you said, I think they're terrified of the big red devil
How big red devil and your tank is?
@@situationing the red devil is probably at around 8-9 inches and the tank is a 110 gallon
I have 4 of them and one of them likes to run off and hide in a hole or a cave somewhere and it only come out at night
I have 3 in a 120 with my cichlids and have never had an issue
Lmao your tank is heavily overstocked man. Take the goldfish out they don’t belong with those other fish. Also take those loaches out.
Ur ammonia is prob off the charts
Just get rid of you tank you can’t own fish
I have two of them and I absolutely love them mine are about 2” and there fun to watch
2 year ago this video and i just see IT
I have 1 like that and its petty cool
Mine is happy as can be with my giant pleco and pygmy pleco. Now I feel like I should get another, but idk seems risky for some reason lol
Nice video!
My son has a rictus cat in his 35 gallon aquarium and no other fish messes with it.
I have 2 of them in my 75 gallon they hide all the time see them like once a month 😂
Would they be able to be with a betta fish?
My lfs has a school of like 7-8 in their large cichlid display tank.
I just got one and he was just swimming in circles. Didn’t even bother with my 2 angles
Can this one be with neon tetra? And they keep hitting my Cory cat and Albino rainbow shark is that ok?
Toxic Main No they can’t be with neons because they would probably get eaten
My Pictus ate 2 sparkling Gouramis and 2 large cardinal tetras
my catfish is bashful it only comes out when all the are out lights
