    It should be noted than an uninsulated crimpable connector requires a different crimping tool than its insulated counterpart.

    My crimp tool has option for insulated and non insulated connectors. The shape of the crimp tool is different. If the non-insulated shape works great on non-insulated connectors why change the crimp shape for insulated ones, do they both provide equally good mechanical grip on the crushed wires? Also, crimp connectors with soft heat shrink can be crimped as non-insulated?

    Crimping styles and methods are very much based on the applications and the current loads through that joint or across the terminal. if one is working strictly on a low voltage application, where there is no water or liquid penetration the crimping methods are such that the joint is defined by a solid connection and conductors are firmly attached.

    I prefer to tin the stripped part of the wire with solder, then crimp, and even solder where the wire sticks out the end of the lug to the lug itself. A bit of silicone sealant in the end of the lug where the wire goes in is not a bad idea either. Both the solder and the sealant protects the crimped part of the wire from any corrosion.

    • @GalcoIndustrial
      @GalcoIndustrial  5 років тому +2

      That's a great point about corrosion displacement. This process is also very effective for your car , bike, boat, anything with wiring in it that is outside all the time.

    • @editorjuno
      @editorjuno 5 років тому +4

      Try that on a job requiring dozens or hundreds of connections on a deadline and you'll be unemployed in the blink of an eye -- fine for a few connection that have to survive a particularly hostile environment, but for most applications? Total overkill!

    • @GalcoIndustrial
      @GalcoIndustrial  5 років тому

      @@editorjuno thanks for your opinion Bruce. No doubt a timely process. Perhaps a bit of common sense might just do the worst applications in a vehicle or machine. HEAT is electrical and electronics worst enemy. So maybe just do ground wiring and high current cables, like battery cables, charge circuit wiring, etc.

    • @awizardalso
      @awizardalso 5 років тому +1

      @@editorjuno I did work for a company that built power control equipment for subways and light/heavy electric powered trains. We also built portable power substations on flat bed semi-trailers to fill in while a substation was being serviced. We had special lugs designed for those being exposed to the elements. Anything else was installed in sealed compartments.

    That yellow handled crimper should be against the law. In my very early years as a mechanic, the crimps by that tool gave me so many issues i finally gave them away and found a better tool. One that punches a part of the connector into the wire. No problems ever after that. I mentally scream everytime i see a pair of those terrible crimpers.

    • @Name-ps9fx

      Yup. My go-to crimper was an appropriately sized vise grip. Lock it down = crimped!

    The yellow crimp-tool shown is a shade-tree mechanic's that I'd only use for emergency, as a get-by measure until the joint can be made with the proper tool. Hand-squeeze jobs like that cannot guarantee a proper crimp if you have weak hands or arthritis. The correct tool is a multiplier, ( shown at 0:33 ), that always gives the same pressure. R/B/Y ratchet crimp tools for everyday use are quite cheap from auction sites, and well worth buying to do the job properly.

    and what sucks is that as a simple hobbyist i don't wanna pay 20-30$ for a lot of tools :s wish you could do all with one tool! i need a seperate one for duponts another for power supplies and another for terminals?! at least terminals can be used with bare wires ;s
