This is the complete soundtrack to the Japanese version of Castlevania III. It made use of the VRC6 chip, a special mapper developed by Konami that allowed for 3 extra channels of sound. With two extra pulse waves (that had 8 available duty cycles as opposed to the standard 4), and a sawtooth wave on top, Akumajou Densetsu sounds distinct amongst most other Famicom + NES titles. Madara and Esper Dream 2 are the only other Famicom games that also used the VRC6 for sound expansion.
Fun fact- Hidenori Maezawa, one of the composers and sound programmers for Contra (NES), helped develop the VRC6 chip. You can read more about the VRC6 and other mappers here-

I love how Circle of the Moon used so many songs from this game that were good.
I agree!
complete missed chance to use stream
Damn, some of the most dense, dissonant music I've ever heard in a video game!
Try listening to Lavender Town, then you'll change your mind

Lavender Town has nothing on this nightmare.
Noway Lavander Town is creepier than his. Only thing that compares IMO is FF8 Galbadia Garden about 40 seconds in. ua-cam.com/video/s5KdcGlpq-g/v-deo.html
@@TrashyBadBitchVivi Your profile picture and name.
Sounds like Harmony of Dissonance soundtrack.
Because the song is dissonant (this is a pun)
Reminds me of the old school horror film music, like an approaching vampire to the bedside of a beautiful woman during her sleep.
the most horror feel instrumental...love it
As sinister as this is, the NES version is way more alien. I've listened to both versions while falling asleep, and this one didn't have half the effect on me the other one did.
yeah… how were the instruments on the NES version fuller sounding than the Famicom with the help of this bad ass chip? Really disappointed on this one… should have been one of the best showcases of the chip.
@@victorcook4530It's really not that disappointing lmao. These two versions had different release dates as the original 1989 Akumajou Densetsu was composed with the VRC6 in mind. As for the downgraded American Famicom Castlevania 3, they still have more time to improve the composition and making it more complex for the NES' 2A03 and I still appreciate their effort for these two versions. I still love the old Konami for making such banger soundtracks for these 8-bit systems and their arcade cabinets with FM chips and sample support.
there are a few songs that sound like they come from a late MSX2 game on this OST but this is one that straight up sounds like it should be playing while you're crawling through an underground tunnel full of guards in Metal Gear 2, particularly
oh shit, you right
It's not the music itself. It's what the music represents.
Fellow Legends fan ;w;
That sawtooth wave makes that much of a difference here, wow!!
@Haspen89 Yes it is; in CotM it was just remixed, but you can definately make out the notable parts, like the minor arpeggio in the beginning.
The nightmare before chritsmas. Tim Burton
This is what a non Belmont or vampire Hunter hears near Dracula's castle
This is what I think of when someone mentions Castlevania 3.
Sounds like a Game Over theme.
You...just....don't....get...it.
I'm with the others on here. This track was way too freaking creepy for me. Maybe that's why I never actually finished the game with Alucard. I've got it paused right now so I don't have to hear the damned thing.
I used to hate this music because it's so slow, heavy and plays during the worst level.
@Deibodese That constant low channel gives me the creeps, too.
Beetlejuice.

Maybe there isn't a trance of fear in my bones, but this is my first time hearing this, and it is nothing especially freighting. I don't know what you're all seeing.
Also, why is everyone mortally afraid of the drowning music in the Sonic games? It startles you the first time, and makes you panic, but it isn't Satan chuckling in your face and dancing.
you're just wayyyy cooler than everyone man, holy smokes so cool
