You rule! Hail Mary Cherry!
@@brandonbullington amen to that 🥰
If you didn't know, the new song at the end was co-written and sung by McKenna.
Hey Mary, thanks for avoiding trailers for this movie, I think the less reactors know about what they're getting into, the better the reactions to twists and turns in the story and reveals. You know, all the things that trailers spoil.
Please screen Cujo 😁
It should be told that Bill made amends with Harold before his passing. He even honored him at the academy awards after his passing! ❤️
I remember that!! It was so beautiful to see that.
tru but he waited too dam long Harold wuz already at loss of speech & walking
It has been told. This isn't new info.
@@XxThePhantomFreezexXit’s never too late to make amends
@@timothymills2934Nobody said it was
Love the Winston arc, in the original, he just needed a paycheck, but now he's financially crucial to keeping everything the Ghostbusters built alive.
They made sure he had a paycheque... he is returning the favour.
@@babalonkie More than that, IIRC the scene he mentions that the Ghostbusters taught him he could do anything, so it gave him the confidence to create a very, very successful company which allows him to return the favor and more
RIP Harold Ramis (November 21, 1944 - February 24, 2014), aged 69
And
RIP Ivan Reitman (October 27, 1946 - February 12, 2022), aged 75
You both will be remembered as legends.
My God! Harold Died Before I Graduated High School.
The ending is honestly one of the few times I got teary eyed while watching a movie. Not only were we saying goodbye to the character, we were saying goodbye to Harold Ramis.
Same Here, Fact's
blech
And goodbye to the og cast.. was a shift.. massively emotive
I also love that Cassie was saying goodbye to her father.
Phoebe’s deadpan delivery of her dad jokes is so spot on. She’s priceless!, 😆
She's telling "dad jokes," and she's not even a dad. That's talent!
I never thought of them as dad jokes but as kid jokes, especially since I remember hearing the fish "fshh" joke as a kid, from another kid.
Fun fact:: McKenna Grace came up with all those jokes herself!
They answered the call and fans loved it.
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
yes ❤
I have commented it many times... but to me...
At the end, when they reunite with Egons ghost, Rays "Im sorry", Peters "I know you´d show up" and Winstons "I should have called" wasnt the characters saying the lines to Egon. It was Dan, Bill and Ernie saying "Sorry Harold, we should have done this, while we had time"
I saw this on the big screen and I really loved it especially how they honored Harold Ramis/Egon Spengler and I really laughed at Phoebe's science jokes. Plus seeing the original Ghostbusters stopping Gozer was awesome.
Well it was Ivan Reitman (R.I.P), the director of the original two films, along with his son Jason, that directed it. Despite it being kind if a rehash of the first, it was still made with much love. I loved it so much.
And fun fact: A sequel to Afterlife has been announced already
Nice!!! Does it have a title and release date yet?
So touching that Ivan Reitman's last act as a producer was to make this treasure. That's how you leave this world behind with meaningful impact!
... And now I'm crying again! Sorry, gotta go find some tissues...!
@@kaziu312 Not yet, it was announced maybe a week ago
And a new asymettrical multiplayer game was announced as well with Ernie Hudson and Dan Aykroyd returning to their roles. It functions as a pseudo sequel to Afterlife too.
@@gokaury Saw that trailer. Not sure Asymmetrical will work for Ghostbusters. I'm interested to see it in action. Still, I think they should have just made a sequel to the previous Video Game. In my opinion, Ghostbusters works far better as a Narrative Experience than a Versus Game.
"they're not learning anything"
Well, they're learning that Cujo is a really scary movie.
That dog was scary :o
loved the movie as a kid...
It's depressing more than it is scary
McKenna Grace really knocked the role out of the park. She was great in this movie👍
Yes, she stole the show imo.
I swear she was actually channeling Harold. She absolutely nailed his deadpan and yet wry smiling humor.
@@mycroft16 She really did channel Harold pretty well. She made it believable being Egons Granddaughter.
She's an amazing young actress. See her in Gifted with Chris Evans.
RIP Egon Spengler/Harold Ramis. You were a True Ghostbuster.
Well they said that got the CGI of Egon absolutely100% perfect before they even tried to age the character.
It was also important to them that they got the approval of Harold's family before using it.
Also, the body actor who plays Egon was supposed to be the man who voiced the character for the animated series "The Real Ghostbusters" who was a friend of the Ramis family
Fun fact - some of the neat tricks of the Ecto-1 (the car) are from the cartoon, especially the gunner's seat.
I just got gifted an ecto 1 lego build... with lights.. been assembling it for a few weeks now and its been fkn fun af.. its the new ecto-1 with gunner seat and av just built that section...and it works gloriously lol.. best gift ever... now am going to source an OG version..
Yea I heard the story recently about Bill and Harold falling out for years, when Harold was on his death bed Bill raced to his home town and walked into the police station to ask for help finding his friend. I'm glad they got to talk one last time
Fun Fact: They made a Ghostbusters video game in 2009 with same cast Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Harold Ramis & Ernie Hudson.
A great game
Also there are several references (winks, nods, Easter eggs) from the video game within this film spread throughout...and the video game (storyline) also explains why Gozer gets rid of Shandor very quickly in this film...
The real Ghostbusters 3.
That game was my childhood! I gotta play it again sometime soon.
@@MLJ7956I thought Shandor dies at the end of the game? I remember he's the final boss.
This film hits me so hard in the feels every time, My eyes keep leaking this clear liquid when I watch Afterlife or listen to the soundtrack. It’s the perfect Goodbye and Thank you to both Harold and Egon.
Went a saw this twice on the big screen, I was instantly back to being a kid again.
That liquid is ectoplasm. 😉
Me too. This movie WRECKS ME hard! But in a good way.
Same thing, saw it twice, second time with my parents who got me hooked on Ghostbusters. I honestly kept thinking my dad would point out nine or ten small details that I missed the first time around. Between the phone call and the ending I'm a mess every time I see it.
Seen it with my 16yo daughter...late december after aw the bs we endured all the lockdowns and for that night it felt actual magical..i have never had such an emotive cinema experience...ever..it just felt.... good... the whole vibe of the night was amazing... be doing it again 23rd dec this year.. am so biased being such a fan of GB but i honestly think Aftetlife is watershed... even for that scene.... that was... summin.
When the credits began and the theme started in the theater, everyone, myself included were singing along. One of the best theater experiences I've had.
My theater nearly lost its mind when the proton pack powered on for the first time... that sound, shivers. And then again when Ecto 1 floored it, sirens blaring.
That was a great review; you gave this movie the honor it deserves. "Egon Spengler can burn in hell" broke my heart, but seeing the Ecto-1 fly out of the police station with lights and sirens almost made me cry. Rest in piece Harrold.
This was not actually a reboot, Egon realized that what they had done in the first film had not completely gotten rid of Gozer so this is just a continuation of the story where it had left off.
As much as Callie resents Phoebe's resemblance go Egon, her first instinct is to put herself between her daughter and danger!
Good eye catching Olivia Wilde as Gozer. I knew I recognized her when I first watched it, but couldn't put the name with the face. But I did recognize JK Simmons as Ivo Shandor.
all this time, all that Shandor really wanted was pictures of Spider Man.
Simmons has always been in Jason Reitman's work, in one way or another.
When Ecto 1 peeled out of the police station siren wailing, that did something to me.
_weeeearrrr, weeeeearrrr, weeeeearrr...._
not only to you..
That did something to every Ghostbusters fan.
Can we talk about the soundtrack being both updated and super respective of the original -- very well done.
All the sound in this movie was great.
sound and visual effects were on point
Yup, I got emotional when I heard Ecto 1s siren
My favourite film from last year. Was it the best film of all time? No. But it *is* a perfect follow up film. Frankly, a lot of franchises could take note. Respectful, touching with the right amount of development. My eyes were not dry when the credits rolled.
As a Ghostbusters fan since the first movie in the theatre ( I was 8 ) and growing up watching the cartoon etc etc... I loved everything about this movie.
I think the don't be yourself advice is good advice, she wanted Phoebe to open up and make friends. I wish someone had given me that advice at that age.
They’ve also made cartoons series of Ghostbusters where they have more adventures fighting several more ghosts.
Full episodes of "Real" & "Extreme" Ghostbusters were & still are (during the pandemic) being released on the Ghostbusters UA-cam channel btw!! 👀
Is the cartoon even canon? I've never watched it so idk
This movie was everything I could've ever hoped for. As someone who saw the originals dozens upon dozens of times, it was such a rush seeing all these little callbacks and treating the series right.
They were THE defining heroes of my childhood and they are still now.
And yes, Sony is working on another movie, since it was a pretty good hit. Can only hope they bring Mckenna Grace back, who was the clear MVP of this one.
The song, "Haunted House, btw.? That was also her!
She's a talented actress.
LOVED IT!
As a huge Ghostbusters fan, this one was for the fans.
And it was great.
this move was a ton of fun and really good. but 1984 Ghostbusters is one of, if not, the best comedy movie every made. thats just a fact. it was perfect lightening in a bottle, nothing compares to it.
Dude, come on. Don’t compare between these movies. Afterlife is really great, too.
Shohreh Aghdashloo (Avasarala from the Expanse) was the voice of Gozer in the movie!
That is so cool, I didn't know that!
Yup! First thing I was looking for in the credits. That voice is unmistakeable.
Aww you missed the joke that Ray is Podcast’s ONLY subscriber😂
I hope in Antman 3, Scott mentions a cousin Gary in Oklahoma.
This was one of the only movies that me and my mom saw by ourselves in theaters very recently, we both loved the original 2 Ghostbusters growing up and felt just right for the two of us to see this one, and by the end, we were both happy tearing up, my mom especially. This was the kind of Ghostbusters we needed, even after Harold Ramis passed, we knew that a 3rd wouldn't work..but they definitely did with this movie, and was amazing.
“I thought you might turn up.”
“I’m sorry I didn’t believe you.”
“I should have called. I missed you my friend.”
😢😢😢 Beautiful.
Did you know that Ivan Reitman acted as a body double for Spangler's ghost?
And now Reitman is with Harold Ramis. Such a tragic irony.
Actually that's not true. It was the Warden from shawshank redemption that played egon
@@prodigalbrock - Both Bob Gunton (the warden from Shawshank) & Ivan Reitman acted as the body double for Harold Ramis/Egon Spangler in several of the scenes within the movie (confirmed by director Jason Reitman, the audio commentary featuring the cast and crew & the multiple behind -the-scenes documentaries/featurettes shown on TV as well as found on the DVDs & Blu-Ray)...
Me buying an aztec death whistle and going in the woods at night to scare the hell out of people
Oh, McKenna Grace sang the end credits song, so the girl is in fact even *more* talented than I thought...which is frankly shocking she's just so good in everything.
Ivan Reitman the director of the original Ghostbusters passed away recently. This was his last project helping his son (or being very strict) with the visual color, framing consistency from the first two films.
maybe they can convince rick moranis to come on board for at least a cameo in the sequel. i think we all really miss that guy.
In all fairness they really didn't know Gozer could uncross the streams since when they crossed the streams in the original Ghostbusters, Gozer had already disappeared and took the form of the Marshmallow Man.
I love how people who know the two original movies, when they first show an "unknown" device we immediately know it's a ghost trap and if we actually saw it IRL we would say "ghost trap" even though we know it's just a prop. Ghost Busters is part of the lexicon.
This movie was directed by Jason Reitman, son of the original director Ivan Reitman.
Jason actually spent time on the Ghostbusters set, so he was the perfect person for this continuation of the story.
The most amazing thing about this movie about family is it ends with a hug
Phoebe is one of the top best characters created in the past 10 years, hands down! 🖖 💪 🥇 🏆 👍
15:53 that sound never gets old
I saw this in the theater....and I was crying when Egon came out...and a blubbering mess with the goodbye part and with the post credit scene from the original movie
Harold Ramis who played Egon. Passed away in 2014. This film was a beautiful way to end his story and pass the baton on to a new group of busters.
It's creaky and overplays throwbacks to the original movie. Having said that, I still love it . A truly worthy sequel. I saw it several times at the theater. Each time, not a dry eye at the end.
Gozer the Gozerian was a great antagonist, and it was a good choice to bring the character back, plus expanding the part and powers.
They cast Gozer perfectly with Olivia Wilde.
In my honest opinion, Ghostbusters Afterlife the is one of the best Ghostbusters films, heck, even better than the 2016 reboot, Also the mini pufts are so adorable but not when they kill each other and it was great to see Dan Aykroyd as Ray Stantz, Bill Murray as Peter Venkman and Ernie Hudson as Winston Zeddmore, RIP Harold Ramis, Well miss you as Egon Spengler.
OF COURSE it's better than the 2016 dumpster fire.
@@joeyjeffrey5892 I know 🤣…we don’t talk about 2016. Glad afterlife had no mention of that monstrosity.
Thank you guys for agreeing with me.
@@fernandodelgado4329 it's not hard to agree with a truth
Jason directed this so well let’s also dedicate this to Ivan as well who did the original.
I am a HUGE Finn Wolfhard fan and my dad has always loved GB so obviously we had to watch it. Finn did such a great job and I’m very excited for the sequel to come out in 2023/24!!
You didn’t remember them getting out of the broken stone dogs in the first movie or the name Shandor or Gozer speaking English asking Ray if he was a god(glad he learned his lesson lol). Great movie and continuing the series. Connecting a lot to the original. Exactly what I wanted(although wish we had got a pt3 years ago when the ogs could have done more) Great cast. And the end gets me in the feels. Can’t wait for the next entry!
Shandor in this movie is the guy who built the building from the original movie, the steel came from the mine in this movie. That was Olivia wilde as Gozer.
I'm not gonna lie....I might have shed a tear or two at the end while watching this in the theater.
This film made me feel very nostalgic. And it was miles better than that PoS they realeased a few years ago.
I was not super excited for this after the last redo, but it was soooo much better than i thought it would be, especially how they paid tribute to the originals
On watching it again; yes, that's Olivia Wilde.
When Venkman tells Egon "I miss you," there's special poignancy. Murray was quite upset with Ramis with how the latter directed Groundhog Day. Murray didn't talk to him until shortly before Ramis' death, when they reconciled. I don't doubt Murry wishes he hadn't waited so long.
It's not obvious, but Podcast only has _one_ subscriber; Ray.
When Mr. Grooberson selected ice cream at the Walmart, it was Baskin Robbins, a nice little nod to Ant-Man, when Scott Lang was fired from their store; "Baskin Robbins don't play. No, Baskin Robbins always knows." ;)
This movie was a proper passing of the torch. It was a continuation of the first movie because they never captured Gozer in that movie. They just sent her back to her realm.
The film is more an epilogue to the story of Egon, Ray, Peter and Winston and a prolouge to Phoebe, Trevor, Podcast and Lucky. A sequel has been announced, hopefully they might continue the legacy.
Let's Not Jinx Ourselves For A Potential Sequel.
I was so proud of Phoebe when she helped the OG’s proud. I was a little worried but then Egon helped her, it was such a heartfelt and touching moment. Grandpa helping the grand baby, and Egon’s spirit was also to cross over. He was at rest !! Man, it’s crazy how my father is now with Harold in heaven but I’m just glad they are in a better place. 🥺😭😊♥️
Mary
Ending gets me every time that I see Egon/Harold hugging his daughter, Kelly. Yes, that was Olivia Wilde playing Gozer
A wonderful actor named Bob Gunton provided the performance for Egon Spengler (Harold Ramis) during filming. The likeness of Ramis is CGI, and done incredibly well. There is a sequel to this film in production and I hope it's great fun.
@Mary Cherry I went to see Ghostbusters Afterlife in the cinema, so many memories and references of the 1984 original in it!!
I got chills when Trevor uncovered Ecto-1, when Phoebe fired up grandad's proton pack (btw that IS Harold Ramis/Egon Spengler's ACTUAL pack from the original movie!)
This was my No one film of 2021, I loved it so much, The ending with the OG`s brings me to tears, the New cast are fantastic especially Phobie, Podcast and Paul Rudd. Ghostbusters 1 and 2 is really up there with the original Star Wars Trilogy for me. I`d love you to do a play through of Ghostbuster The Video Game on PS4 as it`s set between 2 and Afterlife and has the OG`s
Don't let nostalgia cloud your judgement. Ghostbusters 2 was mid at best.
Is it a perfect movie? Nope.
Did it make me cry? Yep, twice.
WIll they try new ideas in the next sequel? Hopefully.
My biggest fear is that this will go the same route as the Star Wars sequels.
“Could there be another movie?”
GB4 has been announced at cinema con a few weeks ago!
Fun Fact about Gozer in this film @Mary Cherry : Shohreh Aghdashloo, AKA: Chrisjen Avasarala from The Expanse, voiced Gozer.
Sony announced a couple weeks ago that a sequel to this will be made.
The jars found in Egon's secret lab actually had a meaning. He once said that he collected spores, molds, and fungus as a hobby. Well, that's what was in those jars.
This rivals the top of my list for best Ghostbusters movie. Loved itn
The casting of Egon's granddaughter was so spot on
RIck Moranis was attacked on the streets of New York by some crazy guy around the time they were filming this. He wasn't too badly injured but he was hospitalized, so maybe that is a reason why he didn't participate.
He retired from acting to raise his kids after his wife died.

Harold Ramos was very sick for many years leading up to his death also the director is the son of the original director who also died shortly after this was made and the director of this movie was the boy at the birthday party and yes the Godard character was Olivia whyild
I tear up every single time with that ending.
The for Harold always gets me!!!!
Love how the trap was hidden under the new floor and that the "tiles" were a 15 Puzzle
This movie is the TRUE Ghostbusters 3 I have been waiting for my whole life. Jason Reitman did his father (who wrote and directed the first 2 ghostbuster’s movies) proud. I went into the theater thinking that this would be a fun B grade movie and like everyone else in that packed IMAX left with tears of sadness and joy at how amazing this movie was.
McKenna Grace as Phoebe is the absolute breakout star of this movie, she really is the true heir to Egon Spengler. And that final scene of Egon with everyone at the end made me and everyone else in that theater burst into cheers and then tears.😭😭👏🏽👏🏽
So great that they paid tribute to Egon

I've been kicking myself for the last year because, in the OG Ghostbusters, there was one of the most subtle jokes in movie history, in that Louis Tully, the guy who kept locking himself out of his apartment, would end up being The Keymaster.
Also, if you want to see more of Annie Potts aka Janine, you can see her in Young Sheldon, where she plays the titular character's grandmother, or Mee Maw.
Please watch the STAR TREK movies! 🖖
God I hope someday she does 😢😭🙏✌️❤️
It makes sense to redo most of it. Gozer needs to do the same ritual to enter our dimension. Also Shandor set up both temples
There was also an animated series called "Ghostbusters: Extreme" which had a similar story, Egon trains a new group of kids, and they get together with the old characters to fight one last baddie. But in that one he's alive. There is also the "Ghostbusters: The Game", from 2009 which featured all the same cast members as the original Ghostbusters. It was the last time all 5 got together. It even had Peck, and the Mayor, I think....
Yes, Walter Peck does appear in Ghostbusters: The Video Game and Bill Murray's real life brother Brian Doyle Murray voices the new Mayor of New York.
My parents saw Ghostbusters in their 20s and so my brother and I were raised on both Ghostbusters and Ghostbusters II. While I had no disliking for the 2016 reboot, it just didn't hit the same mark as the first two whereas Afterlife felt like the perfect conclusion for the original four characters. Egon was my personal favorite of the four and I grew up to really love Harold Ramis as both a filmmaker and actor, so the way they treated his passing and honored him in this film was not only smart but unbelievably touching. I genuinely cried in the theater the moment I saw that hand appear to help Phoebe and by the time I saw the words "For Harold" appear on the screen, oh I was just a total mess of tears and sobs.
On its own, Afterlife is a strong movie already but as a part of the Ghostbusters universe, it was perfect in my eyes. I was honestly happy if Afterlife was going to be the final movie in this franchise but now, I can't wait to see how they follow it up with Frozen Empire.
Id love for more movies with the new cast
This was a Love Letter to Harold.
The best joke that you totally missed....
Podcast didn't identify Ray as "one of" his subscribers.
He said, "You're my subscriber?"
Oh, and Ivo Shandor was the guy that designed and built the apartment building in the first movie. He used to run a Gozer cult.... This mine is where he got the unusual metal for the building.
This movie was everything to me. I’ve never left a movie theatre so happy
This movie was filmed in my home the beautiful province of Alberta Canada
Ivan Reitman stood in for Harold Ramis as Egon's ghost with performance capture. Reitman who directed the first two films passed away shortly after the film's release which was delayed four times due to the Pandemic. Rest in peace, Harold Ramis and Ivan Reitman.
Little Egon is the girl from Young Sheldon. She is marvelous.
Mary, your take on the nostalgia factor for we 80's kids was totally spot on! I did feel that the Gozer redo or revamp plot was a tad weak, but I believe that this was not an attempt at recreating a modernized GB, but something more along the lines of a tribute. The sincerest form of flattery, being imitation and such. I was a huge fan when I was a kid. The original movie was brand new around the same time that I was. So not only is the original around my same age, but for Halloween it was an easy costume! Plus, my name is Ray IRL and I thought it was the coolest thing to have a character named the same as i. Made it even better that he was a Ghostbusters! A treat to be sure as it's not the MOST common of names! Anyhow, it's beautiful to me to see the passion you out into your reviews. It really takes me back! Thanks for the journey down Nostalgia Lane! Keep em coming!
Shandor is played by J.K. Simmons.
I think that Gozer remembered from the last time about the crossed streams, and with there being one less, s/he was able to counter it. Also, I think my fav line is from Phoebe answering with, "I'm a scientist." Just like Egon. Great reaction.
I loved the kid's jokes.
Try this one, then: One atom says to the other atom, "Hey, I think I lost an electron back there!" The other says "Are you positive?"
I had the pleasure of seeing this movie in theaters and I have to say, this is one of the very few movies I've seen that made me cry tears of a fan. This hit me hard more because I lost my mom 4 years ago at the time and the characters seeing Egon again just made me want to see her again just one more time. The entire ending soquence with the final battle and the reconciliation scene had turned me into an emotional mess after I left the theater. This film did all that it needed to do in my eyes. It respected what came before. I can't wait for the next 3 projects they have in store (there is a sequel to this movie along with an animated movie and animated series). Thank you Jason, you did your father and the fans proud! Harold, we mss you.
To me it made sense to bring back gozer zuul and vince. When you watch the first movie they never trapped them. They only closed the doorway
19:14 The gunner seat is from The REAL Ghostbusters cartoon.
I was 14 in 1984 and I loved Ghostbusters and I loved this one..
