- Calgary Mayor Jyoti Gondek and Calgary Stampede CEO Joel Cowley announced at Monday's afternoon water main update that the annual festival will proceed in July as planned, despite the city’s local state of emergency that was declared on Saturday.
“I know that summer has been on everyone's minds and how this water matter could impact summer festivals and events, including Stampede,” Gondek said. “The show will go on, the summer will carry forward.”
“It's very important that it moves on as a number of our industry partners have indicated,” Cowley said, adding that “the show will go on, but it will go on in a very responsible manner.”
Billed as the “Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth,” thousands of visitors and many extra animals from out of town are expected to show up for the Calgary Stampede from July 5 to 14.

We've been lied to. There's no way with an absence of specific, known time-line and risk of lines running dry if citizens don't comply that they'd go ahead and invite thousands of tourists into the city to holiday and party.
Now we know how real this “water crisis disaster state of emergency” actually is. The citizens who paid for the water system, the salaries of all of the City employees tasked with operating and maintaining it, the contractors allegedly “repairing” it, the exorbitant cost of transporting new pipe from San Diego (no pipe companies left in Canada?), and the incompetent mayor and council, also paid in inconvenience and suffering. Just wait until the bill arrives. Hands up anyone who thinks our water rates will go down. But the big boys will still get their Stampede money making machine. Tourists will have more than enough water. Residents won’t.
The pipe was available in storage from San Diego, that is why. Faster than building it.
money is still more important than the well fare of our citizens got ya
true.
It doesn't take as much water as North Americans consume to ensure their welfare. You're only arguing money versus some inconvenience which many people already suffered even in North America. You're just acting like a spoiled child.
@@johnwang9914The spoiled child is the one who thinks a silly event should keep going while the people aren’t allowed to do basic things.
@@JesusIsGoodTruth Again, just like a spoiled child. You can still do whatever you would like, it's just that if your district reservoirs drops too low, there won't be enough pressure to ensure potable water. Really, you are acting like a spoiled child.

Fantastic! If we are willing to allow tens of thousands of people and livestock to come to our city - who you know will not restrict showers, flushing, washing laundry exc..then I guess we are allowed to do those things as well!! I can't wait for a long shower and clean clothes. Im not going to continue suffering so tourists can use our water without repercussion.
My head is spinning! Our city is in emergency state and still will be when Stampede starts. We are not showering, doing laundry etc. but we will welcome thousands of people and animals to share our depleted water?? How about getting us out of this crazy situation first and then throw the party.
@@karinasemeniuk5908 This proves they've been lying.
I mentioned this yesterday this is all a farse. I refuse to follow the restrictions and should you do the same.
@karinasemeniuk5908 My thoughts exactly! I am more than willing to do my part so all of Calgary can have access to water. However, it's hard when the city is constantly telling us to do more, then turn around and say that over 138,000 people plus thousands of livestock are coming for stampede! On one hand we don't have enough for those of us here but we do for have enough for all the visitors? It's okay though because they won't be washing the seats as much! Definitely makes it harder to take the situation seriously.
Gotta pay for the repairs somehow
So is Bearspaw turned off completely?
If not, why would we be shipping water in from out out the City for the Stampede? It would seem to me that virtually any amount of water could be easily supplied from the plant that is all but idling right now.
I’m wondering why these hotspots are only being addressed now. What can we expect in the future if these issues are only being addressed after they have catastrophic breaks?
Because the pipes are buried and filled with fast moving pressurized water. It's only because the pipes are drained with a segment cut out that a detail survey could be done by robots within 200 metres of the segment cut out which found the five deformations of the inner metal sleeve, the actual failure is in the tension cables that are in the concrete around that inner sleeve which holds the actual pressure which were shown as exposed on the segments cut out. They reported another 300 metres surveyed where they did not find any such flaws which suggests the problems might be localized (perhaps chemicals having been leaked into the soil and hence degrading the concrete). If you dig further and there are plenty of interviews with civil engineers on this to do so, you will find that this pipeline construction was only during the 70's and 80's and was abandoned due to higher than expected catastrophic ruptured and Calgary was actually a leading city in replacing such pipes before the expected end of life.
Now, they did mention regularly inspecting the pipe with acoustic sensors and having wrapped the weak points found by excavations and wrapping the pipe with additional tensile material but they also said this break and the five other weak points were not flaws that had been detected or mitigated. Perhaps the inspection and maintenance schedule defined fifty years ago should be updated with more modern methods but really, the inspections and repairs scheduled was being done and the pipe was scheduled for earlier than designed replacement because the technology was not as reliable as was hoped fifty years ago. The earlier replacement schedule of such pipes in Calgary might be why the early public announcements by Gondeck said it had a 75 year life cycle while later announcements corrected this to 100 year life expectancies.
Just told the family water restrictions are off.
Whoever edits these videos both at Global and at the City can we please edit out the 2 minutes of dead air at the begining of every press update?
Excellent, if we can host hundreds of thousands of tourists there must not be an actual water crisis.
Thanks for letting us know the restrictions are over.
Gotta pay for the repairs somehow.
Greed at its best
I'm happy to not visit Calgary until they fix the water problems.
Baldy lost me lmao aaadah aaadah , like Really “come to Calgary and b like us “ yah freaking right they will , they won’t give a flying F,
And ppl leave during this time so it will make up for all the ppl coming Again really duuuh ok and who can afford to travel really anymore , cost of everything is so expensive… F off
Calgary shall overhaul all utility management system. City supposed to have backup and urgent plan, whatever they said we shall do as early and as safe possible, but two weeks just finish one place fixing is very backwards. Lack of training and coordination. Water fee for every family is not cheap and city shall enough fund to build an efficient system.
Yay! The rainbow epaulets have returned! I was beginning to worry that we might become a serious city again.
Of course it will. They don’t wanna cancel all the famous artists that’ll help keep the cash flowing
Why does she say “oki daada umage and tonay” at the beginning of her speech??? Or at least that’s what comes out in CC.🤷🏼♀️
I believe she was greeting in indigenous languages
It's one of the indigenous languages for I'm thirsty!
@@charlesward9486 LOLOLOL!!! Good one!
God's speed Calgary
Stampede will be exempt from ALL WATER RESTRICTIONS
Because of the amount of people animals and fire risk due to the wood chips that sometimes need to be watered for saw dust with is ver flammable
The armed forces are always at the stampede. What better opportunity to show off your skills than providing fresh clean filtered water out of the river. Stampede is the size of a small town. This is the kind of stuff the military does. Well for other countries.
So the Emergency not to use water was just another test, to see how many Sheeple would fall into line? Animals need tons of water and out of town visitors need water to shower and bath! Do you think tourists will take 3 minute showers or the Animals won't have water to drink? I guess they got the answer they were looking for? 🐏 🐑 🐏 🐑
Only fools follow the city's guidelines about water use! There's nothing they can do if you want to shower or bathe or do as much laundry as you want!
I wonder how much of the Father's day savings are due to more restaurant visits. Sure restaurants use water but they do us for a large number of dishes for a large number of people so restaurants are a far more efficient use of water per person. Indeed, the "What about them..." whining that we see on social media are all on businesses that actually help us conserve water (car washers filter and reuse their water).
Never mind house's
This is great news!!! It's no longer and emergency. People can wash their cars and do all their laundry, water lawns .... after all people value their personal happiness above a silly Stampede. If it were a REAL emergency they would cancel the Stampede. We can't afford the water for a huge cow party... but if Calgary believes they can waste thousands of gallons of water on a giant rodeo ... then all the citizens need not worry. Take extra long showers while singing some cowboy songs. The summer will not be effected .... for cows or humans. Good job!!
Lots of watering Holes on the Bow river
Don't worry folks. "DITTO"!
Now imagine what goes on in Gaza with the poor Palestinians getting bombarded in tent camps, with no help, no water , no food , no medicine or sanitation😭😭😭😭😭😭
You want to pretend that the water usage wont be through the roof with all these people and live stock? This city is a joke. I will not watch how I use my water GFY
Looks like Ellen
Great they were trying to take another celebration from us.Trying tinenfirce 15 minute cities not all people are fear mongered
What the city learned so far: Calgarians are proudly capable of living in a new normal where the toxic industrial revolution is partially cancelled. 😜
You mean the toxic industry that produced the device you are typing idiotic comments on?
We can't water our lawn but we can host thousands of people and horses for a carnival 🤬
I see dead people
