I met James Garner 20 years ago and said I loved The Rockford Files and the character, Angel. Garner responded by saying Stuart Margolin was a gifted artist that wrote, composed, and directed - in addition to his acting. Garner was effusive in his praise. I’ve seen The Rockford Files episodes many times - and yet, Angel always makes me laugh! RIP Stuart Margolin, you will continue to entertain millions for eternity.
NICE
LOVED ROCKY TOO
TODAYS SHOWS JUST DONT CUT IT
So true. The whole cast was first rate and Stuart was no exception. He will be missed, as they all are.
Very well said.
I met Mr. Garner Summer of 1974....a lifelong friend of my fathers owned a body shop on Ventura Blvd. He maintained the often damaged Pontiacs and Frank's speciality was Jaguar E Types...Jim Garner was sott8ng in the front office paying a bill on one of his own cars and Frank introduced me to him He was warm and kind and HUGE in my eyes...A big beaut8iul rock solid guy with an amazing charm that took the time to actually talk to this 17 year old skinny kid.
The BEST episodes had Stuart in them. Angel was such a weasel and Stuart really nailed it.
i agree. angel was such a unique character because he was without any redeeming qualities, yet you can't NOT love him. that is a very rare quality and i think Stewart deserves all the credit you can give him.
RIP ANGELDUST! YOU CRAZY WEASEL
Angel was the best weasel ever in American TV.
@@johnmaxwell1750 I don’t know, Dr. Smith was a great weasel as well.
He nailed any role he played.
Excellent actor and just an overall nice person.
Stuart was one of the very greatest actors to ever been seen on TV. I loved him on RF, and he and Garner had perfect chemistry.
Angel Martin is one of the greatest characters in television history! And one of the most iconic second bananas up there with Barney Fife and Ed Norton. Stuart Margolin and James Garner's chemistry really helped propell Rockford Files to legendary status.
Angel: "Jimmy, Jimmy, Jimmy!" (implorig Rockford's intervention or rescue after some kind of scam he had gotten into went bad.).
I have a hard time accepting this is the same guy that played Angel. He doesn't even sound the same. He was absolutely brilliant in the role. Such a weasel. Stuart new that guy.
@@roquefortfiles: He has changed, but I caught some vocal cues that harked back to his characters of that day. He appears a fine and genuine gentleman.
Wish his wife had done a brief appearance.
Stuart passed away a few months back. @@KutWrite
@@roquefortfiles: Thanks. I had a feeling that was so.
"Guarding my back means taking off at the slightest hint of trouble". One of my favorite lines Rockford delivered about Angel.
Run like a jackrabbit at the first hint of trouble
This video just become all the more special. Stuart passed away December 12, 2022. Thank you for featuring this wonderful actor, director, writer and human being.
Sad to hear Stuart Margolin has passed. His on screen chemistry with James Garner was wonderful. Even further back, 'Love American Style'. Rest in peace Angel, you were a real treat.
So nice to see a younger generation taking an interest in a great character actor who deserves his due! Not many interviews around with SM; whether he didn’t get asked, or didn’t want to do them, I don’t know. But (for me, anyway) you scored a coup! Thanks for this, SM performed one of my all time favorite chararcters from one of my all time favorite series! He was one of the reasons why that show is/was so beloved. Also loved Gretchen Corbett as Beth Davenport. RIP wonderful James Garner.
What an honor and pleasure to see Mr. Margolin again! Rockford has been my all-time favorite television show-and Angel and Jim my favorite characters. How absolutely brilliant Mr. Margolin was on the show! A timeless classic. How nice to see him well and still so eloquent. I enjoyed this immensely. Thank you, Mr. Margolin. You have literally been in my thoughts and a part of my psyche since my childhood (born 1965). You’ve always been so much more to me than just another character on a good show. Thank you, good sir. I wish you and yours all the best. ❤️
Agreed
What a show. I grew up watching the Rockford Files 40+ years ago and it will always be in my All-Time Top 3. As a kid in the '70s every week on TV and in rerun syndication every day after school at 4pm in the '80s. The episodes with Stuart as Angel Martin were absolute gold and he was the greatest sidekick in TV sitcom history, perfectly cast for that role with the word shady written all over. Just watching the clips or even the still shots of Angel and Rockford was hilarious..
The Rockford Files was, and is, the best show ever! The dialogue is still as fresh, sharp & funny as the day it was written. NCIS is littered with homages to the show. Stuart created magic as Angel. So sad to here of his passing today. Thanks for the great memories and lots and lots of laughs.
"You're hot man! And I mean that in the negative sense of the word!"
This interview was a treat to watch! I had the good fortune to see Stuart Margolin and James Garner shooting a "Rockford Files" scene on location near Malibu in 1976. I stood off camera less than 30 feet away as Stuart and Jim shot and reshot the scene about 5 or 6 times. Seeing any "Rockford" scene being shot would have been a great experience, but it was 100x better because it included my favorite character from the show, "Angel Martin". I cherish the memory. "Rockford Files" is my favorite tv show of all time.
RIP Stuart, one of the best supporting characters ever created for a television show
Didn't notice he died.
For all you young people out there You got to know that your in for a real treat when you watch mr Margolin! I wish “Angel “ could of been in every episode
Me too
Stuart just passed away Dec.12, 2022. He will be missed, in only 37 episodes of Rockford he made a huge impression that made people believe he was in many more episodes during the 6 seasons. He was funny as hell. Just because you have good writers doesn't mean just any actor can pull it off. Garner chose him because he was good., not just to fill a spot. This man had a flair and a gift for character creation and comedy on a higher level than most. Most of us never knew he directed and wrote scripts for V shows of course but he surely knew his trade and could wear many hats. Playing this "cowardly con man," this overly needy friend and failure type, while the Rockford character knew "Angel" was valuable for those very skills in certain situations, yet most annoying at the same time, was a genius idea he pulled off to the maximum, which is why he is unforgettable, even if you see him for the very first time in this day and age. The western show he could not think of the name was Garner's own creation, Nichols ran for one season in 1971-72, a few years before Rockford was created in 1974, and Margolin was just as good in that, just as funny. He was also the comedy relief in the TV show Love, American Style for a few years just before Nichols. There are thousands of memorable character actors over the last 100 years in film and TV, but Stuart Margolin was one of the best. RIP Stuart
ANGELDUST ! WAS A WEASEL WHEN HE NEEDED JIMS HELP TO BAIL HIM OUT
OF JAIL
JSUT KIDDIN
BEST SHOW
TODAYS SHOW ARE GARBAGE
Well said.
Rockford Files One of the greatest tv shows of all time and Angel .......Stuart Margolin one the absolute best character actors in the business . Lovely to see Mr Margolin , Great interview , loved watching this . many thanks
Cheers
Yes, I really enjoyed the scenes with Angel and Jimmy.
What an absolute legend. Thanks to getTV, I see Mr. Margolin all the time. Many thanks for this
What a wonderful interview, thank you for this. Stuart made everything he was in better. He will be missed.
Grew up watching The Rockford Files. Stuart was awarded a double Emmy in 79 and 80 for the role of Angel Martin, one of the very few to achieve that distinction. A great talent, sad to hear of his passing. Rest in peace.
I find myself here watching shortly after Stuart's death (RIP). I always loved his character in the show. I am currently watching the series from the first season. It really stands up to what is done now, and even better in terms of acting and writing in many cases. It is also nice to see other actors, who acted on the show back then.
I own the series box set and am watching the entire series for the 3rd time. Classic!
As a kid, I met James Garner on the pier at Paradise Cove, Ca. He said, "Do you want half a sandwich?"
This was nice to see,but bittersweet now that Mr Margolin has passed...Yes, Jim Garner and Stu became great friends and the western series Stu keeps referring to, where he met Garner, was NICHOLS, a show Garner himself considers his best work..And Stu always maintained his favorite ROCKFORD episode was RATTLER'S CLASS OF'63, where Angel got married. So, when you get a chance, watch it then raise a glass to Stu and Jim...
RIP Stuart.......Angel was such an amazing character.
Wow, this was really fun to watch! Thanks for making this possible. Glad Stuart is still healthy, and that voice is unmistakable. Jimmy!!
I agree
bigwilliearmitage Except he passed away on Dec.12,2022.
This is my all time favorite show I now have the complete series restored fully on Blu-ray The Rockford Files it looks fantastic Universal did a great job with it And what can say about Stuart Margolin (Angel Martin) I absolutely love this character I met Stuart back in 2004 in New York He’s a class gentleman great actor along side with Jim Garner RIP Jimmy I loved him to He will always be Rockford or Maverick 👍👍👍
Great Show
The title of the Western series Mr. Margolin can't recall is "Nichols." Ran one season from 71-72. Rest in peace, sir...
Yes! I remember that “Western,” as Stuart says. It was “ Nichols” about 1971 or so. Later Stuart showed up on Bret Maverick, in the early 1980’s. Then, came back in the ‘90’s in the Rockford TV Movies.
Stuart Margolin was hands down my favorite actor whenever I saw him on anything --- Especially on Rockford!!! :) God bless you, sir. (and the producer Jim knocked out was Glen A. Larson for ripping off Rockford scripts used on a show called Switch).
Rancho Angelo! RIP Mr. Margolin. I still watch to
this day. The theme music was lifted from another source. The 2 episodes Stuart is referring too with Noah Beery,Jr as main focus wad Geargammers. The show was 100x better with him in it. He was main character in 2 shows if i remember correctly, Hotel of Fear, and the one where he marries the marks sister. I guess Beth is the last remaining of the recurring characters.
I love that you interviewed Mr Margolin. Thank you very much !
Glad you enjoyed it!
I love The Rockford Files. Had a mad crush on James Gardner. 🥰 Wish the complete seasons were on UA-cam to watch.
Evelyn Angel Martin was televisions finest con artist. Stuart Margolin was such an outstanding actor he should've been in every episode. Loved the Rockford Files! RIP Jimmy.
Great actor. Any episode Stuart was in, you knew it would be a fun one. I always remember them doing a con and he was the gemologist declaring real diamonds were “paste!” 😅😂
after Garner I thought Angel Martin was the best and funniest character. seeing him running out of a building with a TV makes me laugh. Rockford Files was virtually a commedy.
Yeah, it really was a comedy with the dramatic backdrop of Jim being a PI
Looked him up out of curiosity and found he just passed on December 12. Rockford is probably my favorite show from the 70s. RIP Mr Margolin.
The name of the show he was in with James Garner before Rockford was called Nichols. James Garner played Sheriff Frank Nichols and Stuart Margolin played Deputy Mitch Mitchell. There are 24 episodes and is has shown up on same streaming services now and then, but generally hard to find but definitely worth watching should you stumble upon it.
The best! Mr Margolin is such a gigantic talent.
Gilbert Gottfried did a cool interview with him on his podcast a few years ago.
I agree
RIP Stuart. Another 1970s icon gone. Damn it!
The Rockford Files was simply one of the greatest series ever and James Garner was known as a great person to work with he was known for treating his fellow cast mates and crew with the upmost respect and a fun person to be around And the cast was top notch as proof your great guest Stuart one of the all time greatest characters ever on television!
RIP Stuart Margolin--Angel Martin. Just died the other day in December 12, 2022.
Stuart had a choice of another show but chose Rockford Files which is great because it would not have been the same I can not imagine a better Angel Martin
I agree
Stuart is such an amazing talent. Love his work.
He will be missed he was a great character actor I loved him in the one time he was in Magnum PI as hot rod Chrysler
RIP Stuart Margolin...Great Actor, grew up watching him on TV...he will be missed...
Very sad, so many of the fantastic TV stars from the 60s-80s are passing away, RIP Stuart, only watched "Rockford" occasionally but remember him from that and other shows I saw him on during the 70s-80s.
Awesome interview dude👍
They met on "Nichols", the failed series which sort of copied the " Support Your Local ...." films.About Rockford, it was produced with a long life and popularity for decades in mind..Very few contemporary references ,fads, etc. were included in the scripts ,so as to keep them from being dated in future syndication..And except for the cars and phones, it remains pretty timeless...
RIP, Stuart Margolin! Brilliant character actor--my favorite episodes have Angel, or "Angelo," in them. I watch the show on a regular basis, though I was a kid when it was originally aired, and didn't like much then. Everyone who worked with James Garner seems to have liked him.
R.i.p Stuart Margolin. What a funny talented actor. Angel Martin was one of my favorite characters on that show. He was also great as Little Joe in Kelly's Heroes.
What an absolute gent. Hero of my childhood and adulthood.
I agree
I just finished watching the entire DVD set of the Rockford Files, The entire cast was superior, Angel was always getting Jim in some real jams but he was a terrific character, Stuart Margolin was a huge part of that show, Great actor.
Stuart passed over today. 😥 December 12, 2022 .
Truly one of the finest talents of all time.
Rest in peace, sir.
R.I.P. Mr. Margolin. Loved this man and his work so much.
I just found out about his death when I came here to see the interview. So sorry to hear of his passing.
@@jayraskin I hear ya. It was news to me too.
One of TVs best comic actors. He deserves more credit.
I had the pleasure of getting to know, Stuart Margolin when I wrote him and James Garner a Western comedy film script in Hollywood. Stuart was a joy to behold, thoughtful, genuine and just a lovely human being. Also, a remarkable talent.. Hollywood could take a lesson.
Angel, you earned your wings..
Stuart, I especially liked your role in 'Death Wish' as Ames or Aims. You brought a unique character to the center of the plot since you armed Paul Kersey. Of course we all enjoyed you as Angel, but there are also the other roles you did so well. Many thanks and take care and be cool, man.
The Rockford Files will always be the best television show of all times!! Not even close. Writing, production, and acting at its best!!
Wow love Stuart 💘. He and Jim Garner were great together.
I agree
R.I.P. Stuart "Angel" Margolin. While I liked all of the Rockford Files the ones with Angel just seemed to be better IMO.
Great interview Stuart you were great as Angel.
Its is amazing how a beard changes Stuarts appearance!! I loved his character on Rockford Files.
Steady Rollin' Stuart Margolin.
Just found out Stuart passed 3 days ago. The Rockford Files is easily one of the best shows of its era, and genuinely MY personal fave of all time. I loved the ENTIRE cast, but of course, every scene Stuart Margolin's Angel Martin was in w/Jimbo was just flat out magic. Angel Martin was as shady a character as you'd ever want to spend time with, and yet, Margolin made us care for him as much as Rockford did. There ain't no acting better than that. RIP Stuart Margolin; you and Jimmy will always remain in my pantheon of all time faves!!!
Don't forget about MASH and Love American Style. Very versatile and compelling actor! R.I.P SM
he was really spot on playing angel , just perfect casting there . r.i.p.
Jimmy old buddy!
You know how they give you one phone call? Well, this is it!
Great Great job with your in depth interview with actor, whom we all love Stuart Margolin aka Angel, you could always see the chemistry between James and Stuart, something you cant fake, and again Mr Conlin, love your insight and questions, same questions I myself would ask, Love to you all across the pond,,
he did a great magnum pi episode too
Angel was the best TV character ever...perfect. I also loved Mr. Margolin in "Death Wish".
Angel Martin was my favourite character on the show! 😇😊
Just watched Stuart Margolin in MOM P.I. both seasons from 1990-91. What a great character he played, along with the rest of the cast.
R.I.P Mr. Margolin.
Stuart was great as Angel and so funny.
I agree
Love the show angel and of course jimmmyeee , watch reruns several times and still enjoy it like the first time
At 12:56, Stuart is referring to the two-part episode, "Gearjammers," which originally aired in the middle of Season Two. They did a couple of two-part episodes.
Wowza
Bloody hell Stuart's gone old great actor , well done getting him , I do think your questions are a bit to long though
Just read Stuart had cancer about 8 months ago and passed away in Staunton, Virginia. Driving down Rt 81 south I used to see the signs for Staunton and Woodrow Wilson. It's in the Shenandoah Valley and is scenic with beautiful mountains. I got tired of driving Rt 95 from NJ to NC and started taking the PA Pike to Carlisle and pick up Rt 81 to Roanoke and then headed South to Greensboro to High Point. Amazingly the mileage was very close and I didn't have to deal with DC and all the traffic!
For a preview of Stuart's talent, watch Stuart's performance as a private in "Kelley's Heroes".
Angel was so funny on the show.
I agree
He died just 6 months after this interview. So glad I saw this!
The T.V. series he was trying to remember at the beginning of the interview was called "Nichols." It was an excellent Western. Watch it if you get a chance.
I used to rush home after school to watch reruns, by the way i believe the western stuart was talking about was "Support your local gunfighter and or sheriff"!
He's talking about the 2 episodes called Gearjammers where Rocky is in danger with Scott Brady who played Mr Hammel and Rocky witnessed hi jacking payoffs unknowingly.
Love Stuart and the character Angel Martin. Some homework by the interviewer would have made this better.
I loved when he told Paul Kersey (Death Wish) that NYC was a cesspool.
One of the best. R I P Stewart
I agree
All my favorite episodes had angel.. One of my favorite characters of all time .
RIP Stuart
RIP Stuart......I'm glad you were in Death Wish and had a pivotal moment in Paul Kersey's life in the movie......As your character gave him a gun that led to him becoming the worlds most famous vigilante.....Godspeed Stuart.
Imagine sitting down and talking with Jim Garner and Stuart Margolin...
Back around 1985, I remember recognizing him, in an old Alfred Hitchcock Hour, very young of course, and it took me a while to realize where I had seen him before. I already miss this guy, and I think RF was his peak. But I think the 70s were actually America's best decade, all things considered. Now the entire world is in free fall.
I enjoyed the interview Gilbert Godfried did with him. Worth listening to over an hour.
I think the producer who was slugged in the anecdote about using the Rockford files music is Glen Larson.
RIP Angel.
The 90s Rockford Files comeback had a show where Angel became a pastor of his own church and preached just like the actual "good luck" Bible preachers today....I laughed so hard it passed my biggest laugh for Carol Burnett's Spanish Dance Troop skit. Stuart Margolin has a fan base....I need to find that church skit again.
Sad to just learn Stuart Margolin has passed away 😢. Just seem all six seasons of the Rockford files on blu ray. Didn't know they had made 8 tv movies. But they are on order off amazon. Should arrive in the next few days. Saw the very first episode shown on the BBC in 1974.
Magnum was all old Rockford people from the actors to the crew and Stuart played a slimy ex buddy of Magnum's who lied and almost got Magnum killed just like he always pulled with Rockford. He was involved with drugs and his front was selling encyclopedia's and he and Magnum were ex Vietnam buddies and he just happened to hook up with Thomas.
RIP Stuart!
Such an amazing show all the cast is so good I’ve been watching at least one a day Angel was my favorites also Becker. Garner made it look so easy …well I gotta go and watch some RF
