  • Today's TIP on making your personal statement/essay count when applying to a postgraduate residency or dental school.
Like President John F. Kennedy's famous quote: Ask not what your country can do for you, Ask what you can do for your country...
Well the same applies to residency programs. Yes you are there to learn and sharpen your skills, but what are you giving in return? Most residencies also give a salary or stipend. Thus, you are getting paid to learn and become better, which is the complete opposite of the time spent in dental school where you pay $50-90K/year to learn.
Doing a residency can be a rewarding experience for new dentists both personally and professionally. But what are you giving in return? How are you making difference in the lives of the people in the community you are serving? This is an important fact to know.
Program Directors want to know why they should consider you as a candidate.
Why and How do you fit into the culture and mission of the program?
Do you even know the purpose or mission of the program?
How are you going to make the program better?
As a candidate for a residency position, dental school class, or even a dental job, you MUST know the mission of the organization and how you WILL contribute.
Write how you plan to contribute in a cover letter for a job/associateship or in the personal statement essay as part of the application process. This will be your opportunity to stand out, be different, and get yourself out of OBSCURITY!!
