Adam Savage's One Day Builds: Hellboy Samaritan Carrying Case!

- Even though Adam's build of the Hellboy Samaritan prop replica is yet to be completed, the project is at a point where he wants to properly store and display the piece in a carrying case appropriate to the universe of Hellboy. We know how much Adam loves making in-universe boxes, and the Samaritan goes through this rite of passage as Adam paints, weathers, and creates a stenciled logo for the case that his Samaritan will live in between upgrades and additional work!

I love how carefully, he paints the font and assembles everything together on there, and a minute later literary beats the shit out of it. Have to respect the process of weathering.
The weathering is awesome, but I'm a bit annoyed that he didn't do anything to the bottom. The box gets slid around, set down, pressed against objects, &c. and the bottom of the box sees most of that action.
@@philkensebben157 While I generally agree, the bottom of the box also isn't usually seen.
SAME THOUGH.... lol
@@philkensebben157 the bottom will see the action so it will get weathered sooner or later.
@@nazarzadeh So, what then is the point of artificially weathering the case? Also, I love how your point and @Flo Huber 's point are diametrically opposed. Further, I'm just expressing my (OCD) opinion on completing the work, rather than leaving a noticeable detail incomplete.
Adam you should look into the perspective crop tool in photoshop! Allows you to select 4 corners of a planer surface and it will crop and resize it to a perfect rectangle. Would be perfect for when you were trying to straighten the typography!
Watching the way he did it was painful to me. He started right with doing a rectangle around the letters at the right perspective but when the edge was blurry he switched to a regular rectangle. That makes tweaking the perspective 10x harder. I once had to do it for a 3d model of an arcade machine. I couldn't find any flat image or scans of the marquee so I took a picture that was at an angle, selected the 4 corners and then with the skew tool I moved things in place and it took less than a minute. I like skew over the perspective one because you can move each corners individually instead or shrinking and enlarging a whole edge.
THANK YOU! I was practically screaming at the screen. This should be pinned.
I was just coming to say this. I tattoo, and have people bring me pictures of cards or letters they want a signature or line from, and I use the perspective tool to just square up the edges of the card with the canvas, and 90% of the work is done.
lol, i was thinking while watching adam, "Where will I find the perspective transform tools comment?" the first comment of course :D
It will be in Favourite Tools next week!
Motivation at high level: Time to go back to the shop and build something. Thanks Adam :)
I love watching Adam build boxes for things. Especially when he starts weathering them and the story of the box comes out.
One of the things I love best about the time lapse of this is finding out that Adam's a "tongue-out for precision" worker. Thanks for the great video, Team Tested!!
I have given you a ton of grief over your past safety habits, so I'd be hypocritical not to give you some big kudos for this video. Not only did you make a cool case for your Samaritan, but you wore ear protection and a good respirator. Thank you for being a good example to all fellow makers, especially the young ones.
Hi Adam, graphic designer here too! I usually copy the image into Illustrator after straightening it out. That way, you can get some really exact shapes on your letters by tracing the outlines, plus you're then left with a vector file should you want to create a vinyl stencil on a plotter, or whatever you want to do with it. Just a thought, love watching your videos.
Agreed!
Demerit badge-putting something together backwards or upside down
I was gonna comment this as well. I never seem to put it together correctly the first time.
"Forget your chuck key in the chuck" - would be a nice badge :-D
Yes it would!,
_The badge could be a cartoon image of a chuck key embedded in the workshop wall!_
Is this the merit badge roll for the Workshop Tragedy Scouts?
Me: oh he missed a rivet
Adam 5 sec later: oh I missed a rivet!
Love these builds that include the weathering - something really funny about building a nice shiny new thing then beating it all up again
Adam, can I just thank you so much for all the wonder and enthusiasm. You’re such a positive distraction in these freaky times.
Aside from the tools, I really wish I had all the stuff collected in my shop!! xD just walk in the back and pull out an awesome box!!
As a fellow graphic designer and font nerd, seeing that stencil making process alongside the perspective warping to get the letters squared out was really nice.
29:35 Adam apologizes for spraying a tiny bit of glue without a mask. Also Adam at 2:08 onwards; montage of using an angle grinder with a thin disc without any guard on the machine whatsoever, giving the average OSHA-inspector the willies - and - the heebie-geebies... ;-) Don't ever change, Adam...
The Adam and box videos really take me to a happy place. Can't recall how many times I have watched Adam build the Blade Runner and Beaver boxes or weather the carrying case for his microscope. So happy there is a new video of Adam working on a box. Also, I know what I said and even I want to take it out of context.
Great one-day-build but I've have had the gun the other way around so that it was the right way around when you opened the lid!
Keep up the great work.
Tony
a little trick for stenciling: if you know you're gonna use an adhesive, you can make little stems to the islands, and very carefully cut away the stems after you've locked the stencil in place, so the island floats without any stems but is always on register.
it's something Shepard Fairey does all the time.
This is a great idea and thank you for posting! I just etched a bunch of glassware and this would have made the little centres of the letters much easier!

Using an angle-grinder without a face mask and the cover for the disk, is downright dangerous and borderline stupid. The disk can break/shatter and those little shards are traveling at an tremendous speed. Once witnessed it happen, a shard lodged itself in the forehead of the person using the same gear at Mr. Savage (aka nothing). His skull broke, but "luckily" only the bone, his brain was undamaged. Take it from someone who's seen it, NEVER use an angle-grinder without a face mask and the cover for the disk.
You need a small block of foam on the lid to keep the gun scratching on the lid.
I had that same thought.
I don't know what's more mesmerising! The sound of the hammer during time lapse, it Adams face during time lapse 😁
5:58 Achievement unlocked: "Tongue of concentration"
Yep - I do that.. I think it really helps
@@amandaluker7970 I cant NOT do it
35:19 (weathering) yeah, that's it! oh, woops! (paints again)
My favorite part!
The sound and visual of the time lapse hammering is so satisfying 🔨 You inspire me on a near daily basis Mr. Savage 🙌 I often say to myself "What would Adam do?" to help with problem solving... A role model in so many ways 👑
Font creation is an amazing exercise in making 40 odd individual elements cohesive and dynamic; there are so many font tools today: 1000% recommend for anyone that finds that prospect even vaguely interesting
De-Merit Badge Idea: “Am I missing an eyebrow?” I’ve earned at least a few of those.
Am I the only one bothered by the orientation of the gun in the case?
De-merit badge idea: removal of sharp object from body / clean blood of your work. (I work with stained glass and its bad luck if there's not blood on your work at some point, it demands tribute.)😅
Yeah I made a potato gun about 6ish months ago and somehow burnt one off along with a large amount of my hair it looked like I stood in front of a jet engine
@@wkranig No, not the only one. But, if you are standing in front of the case to flip it open, and are right handed, it does make sense.
Another enjoyable ODB, thanks for sharing! Also, kudos for the awareness to pause, reflect, and rephrase on "They assume their own experience is the best possible experience".
Hi Adam, I know it’s a bit picayune but the proper name for the part removed is a Hasp, and the loop bit is the Staple. The parts that you replaced them with can more accurately be called a latch. But it certainly looks good. Oh, and It’s a “Cam Over “ latch, witch means that when closing it it should pass over the point of highest resistance, and then as it passes the plane of center the amount of resistance will decrease slightly.. Your latch isn’t doing that, because you aren’t fully passing the plane, in other words, the part on the lid is too far out over the bit on the bottom. To solve this, you either need to shim out the “Buckle” part, or find a way to move the “Bail” attachment point rearward. Then you wont need the bolt. In the side view, it looks a bit like the box face isn’t flush with the front lip of the top. This would account for the failure to pass the plane. Perhaps a strong back behind that face to keep it from “Tin canning”? And no, the original ammo box wouldn’t have a bolt, it would have had a Staple to hang a Padlock. .
Adam, I love how your leather work surface has aged over the past few months, I think it’d be interesting to incorporate that weathered leather into a project at some point.
1:59 I proposeThe One Day Build Guessing Game: when Adam leaves the screen, what tool will he bring back?
I have been enjoying playing this game for a while without really thinking about it; surprising how often I guess correctly (or at least close).
I'm absolutely in love with this build. So excited to see the case that holds such a beautiful weapon.
what about a badge for when you have a super glue overload moment and nothing is sticking together except your fingers?
Happening now. The claw is hard to type with.
“Every time you peel off masking its Christmas”..........I love that feeling when the stenciled paint job is revealed!
Watching the grinding at the start with no shield gives me the chills.
And no eye or ear protection 😬
@@jesperhagstrom And doing it one handed while holding the workpiece with the other. So many cringes.
Edit: OK, I just watched him cut the hinge, and that was even worse.
@@JonReevesLA it's funny how he trough out the video he almost used all common ppe but only one at a time

The time-lapse without music is so much better. I love hearing the sound of the work rather than the royalty free background music.
“Eyebrowless Adam savage” - would be a cool badge
I’ve been watching this guy build shit for 20 years... it never gets old.
Hey, just so you know you should cover up your mill and lathe when grinding as the particulate that comes off can damage the ways
'What the font' is a reasonably reliable app when it comes to finding fonts that are somewhat clear in a photograph. Really helpful. Use it maybe once or twice a year but always does the job.
Adam, when you are riveting, have you tried Cleco temporary rivet pins? They are great for holding parts in place.
I always love watching the weathering process. Arguably my favorite
Looking forward to when you build a Pram for the Sideshow Mando Child, Adam. It will be glorious. :)
The hammering sounds during the time lapse is my new favorite thing.
Demerit Badge: Didnt grab enough of something the first time
Thank you Adam for saying when you are peeling up the tape that you are not worried about things coming off. My dad was a body man and painter and would have cringed at the speed you pulled up the tape. Many people don't understand that the faster you pull up the tape and if you did not judge the time the paint is down that it is easy to pull up the new paint you just sprayed or the stuff the tape is on. I don't know if this is different for spray paint as much, but using his automotive paints it could sometimes be a little touchy.
Many people also don't know that you can take the technique you used to spray the text on for other things. My dad and I took that all the way to taking the image of Tweety Bird from my floor mats and making I think 10 different stencils. One for each color and background to make an image. I have been asked many times in person how we did it and I just tell them that it is easy and how to do it. I was never an artist, but I found if you look at things from another perspective you can make something that looks like only a computer can do by hand. When you did the text I laughed not at you but knowing the way you did it can be done totally by hand. I have taken the measurements for the letters and just drawn them by hand. You can also take a similar font and use it for a base and then start to reshape them using drawing tools. My mom did this for my dad many times when a customer wanted a badge painted on and not stuck on. She would take the original if we had it and then redraw or even change the shape to fit the vehicle better. We did this with boats, coke machines, and many other weird things people had us paint. We wouldn't stick them down like you did many times but he would have me hold it down by hand. Sometimes this would mean that one of our finger prints wound up on the finished project but we were ok with it.
Adam: *casually swatting pieces of paper towards his xacto pen like he dosen't have hemophobia*
Hmmm? When?

As a tattoo artist, and a graduate with a graphic design degree with a minor in illustration, I would have to 1000% agree with Adam about fonts. They are amazing and a rabbit while you can spend years in. Creating new fonts and especially drop-caps are amazingly fun. I appreciate Adam’s appreciation for the fonts.
The demerit badge for when you work on the mirrored part instead of the correct one
Yes! Adam is making a case for this Samaritan gun... 😎👍
I think Hellboy would have appreciated a good Comic Sans.
Loving the sped up ”timelaps” with no background music 👍👍 also super cool project
Because of the time lapses, you have literally made people watch paint dry. I think that means you win the internet.
RTGameCrowd made an entire twitch chat watch paint dry in real time for several hours. I'd wager Adam came second
From 35:22 till 35:24, is quite possibly my favorite Adam Savage quote ever, and those words definitely belong on a demerit badge.
Hey Adam, first off, I''m a really big fan. I would love to see an up close and personal video about your blade runner blaster for accuracy tips.😁
Beautiful work. It's amazing to watch you create!
The finger demerit badge looks like it’s giving me the bird 😂
A faithful prop build AND a box build in one video? Be still, my heart.
turn that foam around Adam!
Fo real!!
Yeah, it looked upside down in the case...
And add some foam to the lid!
Definitely!
the gun being upside down when he finished completely fucked with my ocd satisfaction too......
The technical term for your rotational reaming is wazzeling.
Thank you for doing the hinge first, I was literally muttering “do the hinge!” Enough that I got looks from my wife!
These are the prop builds I love...the "extra" pieces that really complete a prop. Great job on this!
When are you going to put a spring on that hammer!!!???
The weathering part brings me a weird sense of joy. It's kind of scary, but adds so much value and credibility to the box. Nothing like scratching and beating the crap out of something freshly painted... :D
The font looks like it is most likely “Kimberly Black” if anyone tries this build on their own.
I knew someone would have found it already
or „ITC Bolt Std Regular“
@@CaptainN80 that one is pretty close too, good find!
lol, just found almost the same thing.

You can type in your word and see it on the site. Did so with THE SAMARITAN and it looks pretty close.
I went to school with a Kimberly Black
To think there is a guiding hand that's not Adams, motivation for these kinds of builds comes from a special place and it shows
Talking about setting good examples: Am I wrong that it's frightening to watch the angle grinder being used without a guard?
No it is, I’ve been cringing every time he uses it....
Seems Americans throw the guard away right out the box
The guard gets in the way once and most people never bother to put it back on.
I do the same but im not!! a good example
They have a guard?....lol
Relicing-trick from the guitar world: glue different size pebbles and small rocks onto a chopstick or popsicle stick. Lay the rock on a spot and whack it with a soft hammer (wooden mallet, rubber, something like that) on different spots with the different rocks to make dents that look more organic. You probably already know this trick, but I only saw you using a hammer on this (and other projects) so just wanted to remind you of it! Cool build as always
How about a working Logan's run sandman flame gun next time
Fonts are the coolest! I always think being a font designer would be a lot of fun, but I'm never sure I'd have the time. For now I'm content with reading old font design textbooks.
Mr. Savage, for finding a font in an image, I have come across a website that identifies it (or atleast tries to), its not perfect for what I've noticed, but it occasionally does the trick. I think it was called "WhatTheFont" from "MyFonts.com". Hope this helps.
I say you now need to do a design/build series making the "Lil Sammy" a Hellboy inspired sidearm! I would love to see a deeper dive into your process of developing a concept in someone's world (like you would for any movie prop). one of my favorite one day builds you've done yet was the truncheon you crafted for "Year of the Rabbit."
Adam, use apps like What the Font to take a picture of the font you want and get links to where to get it.
I find those seldom work in these situations... Unless it's a very unique font, you need an exceptionally clear image. For your typical Sans Serif typeface, it's really like searching for a needle...in a haystack of needles. 😑
The font appears to be “Kimberly black” 🤷🏼♂️
Actually Photoshop has that as a feature now.
@@Bakamoichigei in those cases my friends and I usually say "looking for a needle in a needlestack"
@@SteveStanger I've tried it and it doesn't work any better... The only benefit is you can try the fonts immediately.
They really need to do a _guided_ tool that lets you define a font by its aesthetic features. Like, not just "Does it have serifs?" but things like "Are the ends of the 'S' horizontal, vertical, or slanted?" "Is the 'O' circular or elliptical?" "Is the capital 'G' round, or is the front flatted?" "Do the descenders on the capital 'R' meet?" ...that sort of thing.
The font search tool on the Adobe _site_ is sort of like that, but only basic stuff like serif type and font style... It doesn't get down into the gritty details that really help match a font like the specific shape attributes of certain letters.
I was the primary sign shop tech at an Air Force rocket test facility Edwards AFB. When I took over the shop it was around the 286-386 computer era when computers cost a lot and sign work was done on semi custom machines. We made name plates for doors to huge mosaics of 4’x8’ sheets of aluminum to form US flags for test stands and command and squadron patch. Out of Hand cut o
scotchlite film. We made up fonts copied from Star Trek, Star Wars, etc. all hand cut from our templates.

For the photoshopping of the letters segment, may I recommend the perspective crop tool! its a great shortcut for doing exactly what you were going for in the video. helped me out a ton of times working with scanned fabric patterns.

I never made the connection until now. Fender does the same weathering on guitars and calls it "relicing". Makes the guitars look and feel lived in.
Holy shit Adam's arm turning into a jackhammer during timelapses is my favourite thing
Watching a time-lapse of Adam chopping up a box to make a box - that's my jam.
For identifying fonts I use the app "what the font" it's great! I used it to find the font used in Human Era to make my own board for the game. I tested it on your final image and it showed the font as "Boss Italic"
Tool recommendation seeing you put the hinge/latch on. They are clecos and cleco pliers. They act as a temporary rivet/clamp.
Watching your videos gives me inspiration for things I work on, I really enjoy watching your videos especially all the machining and such for this build series. Was cool seeing you get the height perfect on the grips cutting. Always a good feeling to see when cuts work out. As was told to me a while back. Always easier to remove material then add it back haha. Keep up the awesome builds!
Also in aviation at least riveting is done from the center of work/rivet line out to prevent any wrinkles /stresses in the metal being riveted. (Like a rolling pin across pizza dough)
Mr. Savage, these one day builds are so awesome! Also Hellboy is a fantastic movie.
I'm picturing Hellboy hovering over the armorer in his workshop with the letter stencil on the case and just when he's about to spray "Samaritan" on the box, Hellboy says "Uh uh...THE..." and taps it with his big stone hand.
9:06 you take a piece of wood, you screw the hinge with two screws both sides of the cut, and then you cut through it. Perfect cut, every time. And if you have a chop saw with carbide teeth, you can align the hinge and cut it with the chop saw.
The fix for the latch is a spacer. By spacing the latch plate outward from the box will move pivot points closer to the correct plane where the force will hold it latch locked.
6:00 to 6:06 - The Sticky-out Tongue of Concentration ... in high-speed. Totally love this. I wonder how many of us do this? I know I do.

That high speed grinding segment really caught my dog’s attention. 🤣🤣 Was just the right frequency I suppose. Haha
When he did the video about the new wood working bench I didn't understand what the point of the pegs that pop our are. I'm glad we got to see them in use in this one.
I'm definitely going to need a demerit badge for "Set your helmet on fire and turned it into a puddle of charred foam"
If you get a high quality airbrush with teflon gaskets you can run lacquer primer through it, Tamiya makes a few, just have good ventilation or an extraction hood (and a respirator). I've completely replaced rattle cans with my H&S Infinity Cr, on top of the fine detail air-brushing it's designed for.
For pop rivets on our race car, I always used a #30 drill bit. It ends up being 0.1285”, gives just enough play to get the rivet in without too much hassle.
