This video sets the standards on how to demo an amp. Different guitars, different settings, straight into the amp, with no added effects. Well done!
0:32 playing “My Heroine” by Silverstein. made me smile :)
Tobey is one of the greatest heroes in the guitar community.
He serves these delicious and absolutely over the top reviews for years now and he does not even have a six digit subscriber count.
Tobey, we love you but we don’t deserve you.
One day we will get there. Much appreciate your support all these years dude 👍
Awesome demo, great riffs, playing and tones are amazing!
Sounds really good. Somewhere between a Fender and Vox.
It sounds phenomenal in my origin 2x12a cab loaded with a 25watt g12m greenback and a 30w g12h anniversary. Greenback sitting at the top.
Can check ny channel doing a comparison of the origin 50, studio vintage and studio jtm. Its using raw phons mic.
0:31 Silverstein - My Heroine👌
Glad to see you posting more lately.
+++ Toby is nailing it every time +++ simple, honest and true.
You Never let us down with your stellar reviews, especially with some Kravitz!
Great demo dude. Ive never wanted a marshall. Til this one.
Thank you for adding the white dot in the amp settings visuals.
This Amp Rocks, awesome demo!!!
Best investment I've ever made. 👌
your demo's are great man, you make amps sound exactly like they are supposed to or at least how I would imagine them to sound.
Awesome review man ❤❤❤
Damn , silverstein?! Mad respect
Great demo ✌️
Hey Toby, if you have the time in your schedule, would you PLEASE consider doing a comparison video of this amp vs the Laney Studio Supergroup head??
Excellent review!
Thanks for the white dots on the pots!
I miss your videos dude, get well soon
Now we need a comparison with the origin 20 and studio classic!
The Best Review!
Nicely done! #WeMakePRS
Silverstein! Yesssss
Wtf?! Those tones are straight nasty!! Like crunchy dirty nasty 😎 sounds so damn good.
Awesome demo of this amp! Appreciate the settings being shown and all the differences each control makes. Question on the line out, does it cut sound to the cab when connected or you get both?
Thanks, The line out doesn't cut the sound out of the cab, you get both. 👍
👍👍👍
Some nice sounds there tho I'm not sure of PCB mounted valves and controls, my old 79 Marshall mk 11 master vol combos gave decades of trouble free gigging, but then those Marshall MG amps have their controls PCB mounted too.
Give this man every EL84/34 production amp and let him cook
@PeterDad60 The real JTM 45 can use KT66s (what I have in mine), 5881s, or EL34s, but to swap even a new set of KT66s in, you have to know how to bias an amp. On Ceriatone clones like mine, it’s really simple, but on the Studio line, apparently you can just swap in other tubes because they’re cathode biased. I don’t know for sure if that’s true though, but that would be a nice feature.
Some Greta Van Fleet near the 4 min mark.👌
Another fantastic demo! You always demo the important aspects of an amp with very consistent playing. Since you've played both, which do you personally like more, the Studio JTM or the Studio Plexi? I find it perplexing that Marshal chose the 65M Creamback to have in the cabs for the Studio JTM. You'd think they would have gone with the Greenback for comparable wattage, tone and more vintage correctness. At least the combo version of the Studio JTM has a 12 inch speaker not a 10 inch like the Plexi and JCM800 combos have. I never understood that!
Thanks. Yea I agree on the Creamback. A Greenback would work better as the Cream has a lot of low end and JTMs are quite bassy. I don’t know if they are concerned that a 25W speaker couldn’t take 20W if it was cranked all the time so went with the cream to be safe. Between the JTM and Studio Vintage I prefer the SV. The SV breaks up earlier and has more treble so I like it better for rhythm distorted guitar 👍
You may be right. I tried a pair of Creamback 65M's in a 2x12 closed back cab to use with a couple different Marshall amps as a higher power-handling Greenback alternative and I didn't like them. The bass sounded really big, but weird to me and I couldn't get the kind of highs I'm used to with Greenbacks. They're also a little more scooped or have a shifted midrange, i.e. less vocal-sounding. They might be better in an open back cab though. I was told by "Dr. Decibel" from Celestion that Greenbacks can handle more power than what they're rated at. Exactly how much more...I don't know.
Interesting. An open back working better with the cream did cross my mind as well.
Just one more thing...a lot of what people recognize as the classic, vintage Marshall sound is coming from a speaker(s) being driven hard (distorting) like from lower wattage Greenbacks. I think it would be very interesting to compare the sound of the Studio JTM amp from a stock ST212 cab with Creambacks and the same cab replaced with Greenbacks. Keep up the great work!
Suggestion: line6 catalyst vs boss katana 50
Great demo, what was the first riff?
Love this amp but the price is insane in the US when I can get a Friedman Little Sister for less, handwired from a boutique brand.
You can also get a Wangs handwired Plexi, or a Ceriatone JTM clone, with the clones, you at least get a tube rectifier, and they’re handwired from boutique brands as well. Ceriatone will even customize them for you, I got mine used, but it’s a JTM45 with a PPIMV meaning I can crank it without attenuation since it’s built in. Marshall is really bad about pricing in the US. They refuse to set up a distribution network over here, so they use places like Sweetwater as a middleman, which increases prices. It’s kind of sad because I like Marshall, but they’ve priced themselves completely out of the US market, since you can get handwired Friedmans, or actual JTM45 handwired clones for less.
Hello Toby, your videos are very good! The Creamback sound great! How will they get along with the OR15? good comparison... or also the SV20H against the OR15 with Creambacks... interesting. Which one do you like the most? Greetings from Argentina!
Hey, thanks. The Creambacks have more bass than the V30s I usually use. I think V30s work better with Orange amps. The OR15 is fat sounding and the V30s help it cut through. The Studio Vintage would probably work well with the Creambacks as it's quite a bright amp. Of those 3 amps the OR15 + SV20 are my favourite. The SV is the classic Marshall drive sound but like the JTM it needs for volume for distortion. The OR15 is very Orangy and fat but versatile and it can be played at bedroom volumes 👍
Great demo! Is it safe to use the DI out when there is no cab hooked up?
Cheers. The DI out doesn’t mute the speaker out so I’m guessing it’s not safe to run without a load 👍
Did not see any fuse access in the back panel
Are bedroom levels achievable in the 5watt mode say with the level on seven?
It is VERY loud even in the 5 watt mode. I'd say it's not a bedroom amp unless you have an attenuator and can knock it down about 20db 👍
Hell no. I used to have an Origin 20, which most people say is a lot closer to a JTM than a Plexi and I’d agree, although I have more JTM experience than Plexi, and even on .3 watts it was too loud to turn above 5 or 6. Definitely get an attenuator.
Hmmm, when you showed the drive pedal and played ariels it sounded very tight, yet when i chuck and distortion in front on my jtm is sounds very flubby and muddy, any thoughts as go why?
I found it depends a lot on the pedal. That Bognor La Grange pedal I used has so many controls that it can be tailored to most amps. Before I used the Bognor with the JTM I tried a Fulltone OCD clone and didn’t like how it sounded. There are a lot of bands using drives infront of JTMs for their main sound so I’m guessing it just depends on the pedal. There’s a video on UA-cam of Luke Caley from Press To Meco talking about using the JTM 30W as a pedal platform. Also when I was setting it up I spent a while playing with the volume levels on the JTM with the drive on. You can change the way the pedal feels / sags by changing the volume on the amp 👍
@@TobysGuitarGearDemos thanks for the reply!
I forgot to mention I'm using a cheap harley benton attenuator to get the cranked tones but the attenuator just above zero for bedroom levels. Would that affect the overall tone? Ie muddy
Yes! I had one of these HB attenuators it was £60. It did the job but reduced the high end a lot. I’ve recently got a Two Notes Captor X and the attenuator that is much better sounding (although it only has 2 attenuation levels). So yes it could be the attenuator causing this.
Whats the difference between the SV20H and this amp? Looks different but is there tecnically something different? I tried to google it but my 15 minute research wasnt that successfull.
Very good question. The Jtm is cleaner and bassier than the Studio Vintage. You can get SV tones out of the JTM but you need to dime the treble and presence. Using single coils with the SV can be a bit overbearing in the high end. They sit really nice with the JTM 👍
Different output tubes 5881s in this new release versus EL34s in the SV20. Probably some minor variations to the circuit in line with the different output tubes. Overall, very similar amps.
Yeah, the power tube type can make a big difference. Also I think the JTM is most likely using different filter caps so the tone controls are active in different frequency ranges. I think the JTM is classic Marshall tone with maybe 20% classic Fender tone injected in. I think it would have been really cool if Marshall had designed the Studio JTM with a tube rectifier like the JTM45. That would have separated it even more from the Studio Vintage which uses a SS rectifier. Maybe they felt that it would have too much sag at the lower wattage.
What's underneath the bridge on your goldtop?
Bit of foam to stop the strings ringing, it's more for high gain. I do the same on the strings above the nut when I go high gain 👍
How loud is this beast compared to the SV20? It’s my understanding it’s a bit quieter and manageable at home levels.
Can you do the Studio JTM vs the Studio Vintage?
I wish I could. I had the SV on loan so don't have it anymore. I really liked the SV. For me the difference is more gain and an earlier breakup on the SV. The JTM has more bass and is cleaner. I like the SV with Humbuckers and the JTM with single coils 👍
The issue is alway the same with theses 20 watters : no low end, need more iron in OT...
A JTM45 is only a 30 watt amp, it shouldn’t be too different, but if you live in the US, these are a complete waste of money considering you can get Friedmans, or a shockingly nice Ceriatone handwired clone, the Ceriatone coming with some actually decent iron these days.
@@watersnortmoment3734 Not a matter of watts, a matter of iron. And i would prefer an original mashall to clones. Why not a 1959 or a 1987 instead ?
How does this compare to a vox ac15?
this is smoother with more bass, the ac15 has more chime and sparkle.
note you have to turn it up load to get any internal tone. This is the mistake I made in buying a similar amp. 0 was silent, 1 was too loud in the bedroom. You'll never get this tone on this amp: ua-cam.com/video/uVNjSGjWgKI/v-deo.html
A Y-cable is better than bridging the channels imo. I feel the Normal channel is less muddy that way.
I have a' 72 Super Lead and I used to use a Y-cable, then I switched to using a jumper cable. At least in my case, I found no difference.
Where are you tobyy?
Had a period of bad health followed by a bereavement. I'm on a break until things are better. There's not been anything released for a while that really caught my interest since the OR30 + Studio JTM. Appreciate you asking 👍
If only Marshall could price the Studio series well in the United States. None of the studio series is in any way worth 1300 dollars. In Europe the prices are fair, 700 dollars is the market these amps should be in, and they are in Europe. However, for the price of these, you could buy a handwired clone, which will sound more like the original, and you actually get the tube sag the amp is known for with a tube rectifier. I just don’t see the point of buying one if you live in the United States.
Hi Angel com to me
My least favorite sounding Marshall ever.🤮
SOAD 💪🏼
Thanks for the support!! 🎸
no dounbt Marshall you should hire him to do your demos.
where are you???
