I love this world, but I agree that the world is over populated with humans I love people and all life, thus we need to consider other species 10,000's of whom have gone extinct in the last 100 years due to human activities. I chose not to have children and I wish everyone would at least until we reach a more earth sustaining human population. 6 billion people is the max how is the earth going to support 11 billion unless humans become very environmentally responsible.

If someone says they don’t want kids, trust them, because chances are, they are making the right decision. It’s not a job for the faint hearted and yet it’s one that’s expected of everyone. You have to have qualifications to be a doctor, but you are expected to just know how to care for a newborn baby on instinct??. If it’s the continuation of society you are worried about, there are plenty of people who DO want kids and ARE having them.

Just to be clear, men are also involved in the child making process, and some of us also have reasons to not reproduce. The way the person in this interview phrases everything makes it seem like it's just women making this choice to not reproduce.

I am a 32 years old female from South Africa. I've never wanted to have children and almost everyone I meet is on my case on why I don't a at least one child. I generally mind my own business and hardly ever pry into other people's personal lives, yet some people feel the need to dictate how I should lead or live my life.
Tell them to piss off also ask them are they going to help you raise the kid, pay the expenses, college all that jazz? If they say no or pretend to say yes then say mind your own business. The people you meet are jealous & resentful of you because you have taken control of your life you know what you want they want you to be miserable like them don't give in. Don't be surprised if they try to set you up with someone so they can manipulate or trick you into having kids. I know it's hard to believe but people are that deceptive just say mind your own business they'll eventually back off if not cut them out of your life. Your not the only one who doesn't want kids.

Biggest reason childfree people don't want children is simply not wanting to raise another human being. And that's not going to change by finding a good man, or more financial stability or paid maternity/paternity leave or shorter working hours. People simply don't want to do it, and there isn't anything morally wrong with that.

Are you kidding me? kids are not expensive? what planet are you living on.? these days you need at least $200,000 in your bank account to raise a kid. and this is up until the age of 18. this includes all the baby items like baby formula, bottles, nipples, baby food, disposable diapers, baby wipes, diaper rash oinments, baby clothes, bibs, teething rings, baby blankets, diaper bags, baby toys, baby books, baby furniture like crib, playpen, changing table, stroller, high chair, car seat, baby intercom, baby medicines, baby products like shampoo, body wash, baby lotion baby powder, disposable potty training pants, potties for potty training, etc... and later you need to spend on school suppliez when your kid starts going to school such as crayons, color pencils, pencils, erasers, pencil sharpeners, magic markers, staplers, staple removers, glues, pastes, white outs, hole punchers, notebook paper, pocket folders, three ring binders, composition books, etc... all this you would need to spend up until the age of 18 for a kid . plus all their doctor visits, you spend money on those, and you spend money on their extracurricular activities such as piano lessons, ballet lessons, tap lessons, lessons to learn any musical instrument, swimming lessons, tennis lessons, spend money on any sports activities they are involved in, money for school field trips etc... it all adds up. all this is up until age 18 and then college tuitions also after the age 18 which is at least another 80,000 dollars per kid depending on the college a kid attends

I read it costs over 200k to raise a kid to the age of about 20, with figures like that I'm more than happy to remain childfree..

I agree with you that most of us don't expect our partners to have a higher income. And that there are women who CHOOSE to be chidless. However, there's the big elephant on the room everyone avoids talking about: PATRIARCHY. Men still see us as inferior. Just objects for their entertainment. They might not say it, but they do think it. Dig a bit deeper and you'll see. So, before they were obliged to start a family so they would get sex on a regular basis. Now, they aren't. Don't believe me? Ask them yourself in a way they will slip the truth (men LIE A LOT or say politically correct things that bias research, as what is being said by the lady in the video) or navigate through the forums where they speak the truth. I 100% believe you that YOU, as other women, didn't want children. Jody Day, who cites research FROM WOMEN RESPONDENTS (we don't lie as men do), says at least 80% of women are childless NOT BY CHOICE. So, if anything, voluntary childless women are not the biggest of our issues to address, but the outsatnding 80% of childless women are.
I don't like kids anyway. Relinquished my 'babysitter' card at age 12. Told myself that I never want to get married nor bear children. It's a commitment I still carry to this day.
It's called CHILDFREE!! Those are people who have CHOSEN to not have children and never want them. People who want children but can't have them for whatever reason are CHILDLESS. Do some research.

There is currently a population explosion going on in Africa. They are bucking the trends. According to Wikipedia: "the bulk of the world's population growth is predicted to take place in Africa: of the additional 2.4 billion people projected between 2015 and 2050, 1.3 billion will be added in Africa, 0.9 billion in Asia and only 0.2 billion in the rest of the world."
@@RoberttAvro Africans generally have a much smaller greenhouse gas footprint than people in the west. A western woman having one child is much worse for the environment than an African woman having multiple. We can't just blame all our problems on the third world, everyone has a responsibility.

Their kids are able to get higher education, they don't have to worry about not being taken care of when they become old. These things reduce the need for many children.

That being said, that "worst investment I've ever seen" is something that is really hurting both Japan and South Korea right now, for *NOT* having.
See, the problem isn't individuals, it's when enough people like you decide to take advantage of the luxury we have to be able to choose to be child free. Given how many conservative nations there are with forced marriages, this luxury choice isn't all too common.
Anyways, the impact on a nations economy and even society itself effect everyone, not just people who are child free. So that's why I'm being a pain in the ... to people who disagree with me, because I want you all to know that making that choice shouldn't be so easy that you seemingly think it is.
I am not a millionaire....that's what you need to be a parent these days.
Maybe the women don't want to ruin their bodies by getting pregnant.

I think it's largely because we are finally free to be childless without any stigma attached, at least in Western societies. Yes, older generations may take issue but younger generations don't see being a parent and spouse as an essential component to happiness and success. If anything, because we're exposed to so many more ideas and places because of technology more people see conventionalism a component to boredom and dissatisfaction.

I will never have children by choice. Childbirth is not something I want to experience. It's a high risk endeavor that can kill you or leave you permanently disabled and in huge amounts of medical debt. The risks are not talked about nearly enough. Common fatal complications include - stroke, hemorrhaging, sepsis, amniotic fluid embolism and blood clots just to name a few. No one warns women about these risks. Especially in the U.S. which has the highest mortality for women who give birth in the developed world.
On top of that I don't want to live my life trapped in a situation that I'm not cut out for. Having children is permanent and raising them properly in a loving home is not easy. I have other endeavors that take priority over reproduction. It wouldn't be fair to me or the hypothetical child.
I genuinely don't understand why people feel the need to judge and criticize women who don't want to have kids.

I don’t know about other childfree women but, I just don’t want kids. I’ve never wanted any. When I was 5 I would tell my family “I don’t want kids” and they’d say “you’ll change your mind.” Well here I am at 35 and I still haven’t changed my mind. I just don’t like children. And the idea of being pregnant makes me feel physically sick.
Kids are time consuming, expensive, loud, annoying, draining. They ruin your career and your body and your marriage, and do nothing but take. I’m part of the lost generation, I can’t even afford my own home, it would be stupid and irresponsible to have a kid in that situation. Moreover my Mum was a single parent and I remember our struggles, financial and otherwise, and I just don’t trust a partner to stay with me and stick it out. So I choose not to breed.
In my opinion life is suffering, and having children is cruel. Especially considering that in 50 years there may not even be an environment to sustain them, or enough food and water.

This is why when some people edit Wikipedia, they sometimes use the term "Voluntarily childless" to explain the difference between people who choose to have children and people who can't have children due to infertility or other causes.
Wikipedia helps me research things, but I can't base all my observations on it because Wikipedia does not take polls to determine population statistics. However, I can use it to find organizations who do take population statistics.

Absolutely. My bro is following this along with me and we're living in a nice area, ton of free time to pursue interests and education, and extra cash for ourselves or the random person that really needs it.
People need to understand that childlessness isn't selfish. You can contribute to the world in hundreds of ways. If I had kid, I wouldn't have the time to chaperone a classroom of special needs children. If my bro had a kid he wouldn't have the time to volunteer at beach clean ups.

For me the main reason for not wanting kids is I already love my future (possible) kids too much to bring them into this (less than perfect) world. And i know this sounds counter intuitive but I just can't bring myself to birth my babies into a cruel, harsh world where 9 out of 10 people will not have good intentions. My children deserve a better world, this world is just not good enough to raise kids in. I can't guarrantee them a safe, healthy, long and happy life so I preffer to not risk it. I suffered so much from people that took advantage of me and almost ruined my life, even though my parents did their ABSOLUTE BEST to protect me. The truth is, this world is a jungle and no matter how much you try to protect your kid someone could harass them, rape them, gaslight them, bully them, beat them up or even kill them. I'm not gonna birth "new meat" for the predators of this world to feast on. I just can't risk it. I love my angels too much to see them suffer, I know it would drive me insane if anything happened to them. And let's face it, most people are not happy, they're actually miserable. What are the chances MY kids will be the exception? Life is just too hard and too cruel. Bringing an innocent soul into this world is just so irresponsible and selfish imo...

Just because westerners are not having children does not mean other peoples, in particular Africans, are not. The birth rate explosion in Africa will add 1.3 billion new people to the planet in only the next thirty years. We may need to enforce mass birth control on large groups of peoples if we are truly concerned about over populating the planet. But western women who think that not replacing themselves is an answer to world overpopulation are wrong, because all it will do is hasten the demise of the current version of western civilization...replacing it with who knows what.

This is only going to get worse. We are in an economic world where married couples both have to work, one income households can’t pay the bills and raise a family. Households where there are 2 working adults are less likely to want children, no time to raise them or spend time with them. We need to move back to economies where one working adult salary in a household can raise a family. That’s not happening and not likely to ever happen again. That has been the norm for centuries, even poor families could get by with one working adult in the household. Now no one can.

I always knew I did not want children for a number reasons...I helped with my younger siblings growing up (9 kids), terribly poor, my mother was not someone I wanted to emulate, had to babysit for neighbours, pregnancy looked so gross and awkward and I always saw my brothers and men in general had a better life and careers than women...(was born in the 50's). I feel sorry for children being born now..they are tasked with cleaning up a very polluted world and toxic planet. 2 of my sisters are childless as well, preferring a well paid career and a decent home with vacations.
As to too many older people to look after..some of us have a final solution stash ready so we don't have to go the care home route...:-) ..to each his own..

I have a very similar story! I was the oldest of 8 to meth addict parents. I was burping and changing diapers from the age of 6. I feel as though I've already used up all my inner nurturing and simply dont want to have kids. But yet people act like I'm not a real women because of that.

I'm going to have 0 complications and after the baby is born go to work a week later? But both me and my husband has to work too, so who's home taking care of the baby?
Guarantee 0 complications up until the day I give birth then I have to be back at work a week later too. They can't guarantee it.

I'm surprised no one ever mentions contraception, even in the comments. People used to have children, and more children on average, because there was not that much accessible and reliable contraception. Babies were just a consequence of sex. Even now, with being able to plan to have a child, there still a lot of accidents and not everyone has access to abortion.

Who wants to share a little flat with toddlers? If you have a family, you don't want to spend 2 hours a day, every day, on the road getting to and from work. So population increase mitigates against having children.
The woman who puts most of the time and effort into child care and domestic work is actually investing in her husband's earning capacity, thereby making him more attractive to other women. Mothers need divorce laws that protect them from being abandoned in middle age and having their living standard halved, after the task of raising the children is completed.

Better question, why SHOULD we have kids? I've seen no positive to having kids in this day and age, where I think you're a worse person for procreating and bringing a child into a world where they're going to be enslaved and possibly die due to climate change ramping up exponentially. Save kids the pain and misery we're going through so they don't have to suffer like many of us are now a days.
Having fewer children, but educating them more highly and nurturing them more intensively will result in more productive workers, whose skills might actually still be necessary in the hyper-automated economy of tomorrow, which will have next to no need for low and medium-skilled labor, but some need for extremely highly qualified workers.
Besides, the idea that we have to stick to our existing social-welfare model, which is based on individual contributions from individual workers, is absurd. We could easily transition to a welfare model based on taxing the profits of the ultra-wealthy to redistribute among the masses.
The workers of tomorrow will be fewer in number, but they will produce more wealth per capita, which means there will be more wealth to go around for everyone, retirees included.
The main thing is to distribute this wealth properly.

But then she started espousing some of the most archaic and, frankly, stupid rhetoric. You are correct about the fact that fewer people pumped into the existing piggish capitalistic system will force it to change. To become a better version of capitalism that actually yields a more effective society and economy.
Her point about the burden on the social welfare system to support the elderly is inane as well. There are a whackload of subsidies and other financial support elements that are provided to families and to childcare in various forms, schools included. She, of all people, should be aware of how to streamline and redistribute social support funding like this. Not only would that provide us the fantastic human resources needed to support the elderly but would, naturally, provide more than enough funding needed.
Needless to say, this was something that had a lot of potential and yet ended up being overwhelmingly disappointing l.
