This is an ambient piece done with a Casio VL-Tone VL-1, a DIY Monome Norns and a Digitech Polara reverb pedal. I have never owned or played a Teenage Engineering OP-1, but it sure seems like a very fun and powerful machine I would love to own. All the sounds (but the rain sample) come from the Casio. You can hear Piano, Flute, Fantasy and Violin (in order of appearance). The DIY Norns is running the Reels script from @its_your_bedtime, a great looper 4 track tape simulation inspired by the OP-1. The Polara is running the Halo algorithm for the whole piece.

Aaaand the VL-Tone price shoots up. Great vid.
Uupppss! Not my fault! 😀
I already go mine and a VL-5 to boot!
I still have a Casio from back in the day. Still works. When I first saw the OP I experienced a sense of Deja Vu but in terms of the physical specs.
Yes. Something in the design of the OP1 totally reminds me to the Casio
Nice to hear such a rich sound from the humble VL-Tone. I still have the one I bought new in 1981. Time to dig out and hook it up to my FX boxes. Just have to remember to not turn on the cheesy drum tracks!
Take your VL-Tone out of the box! It's a great little device. With FX is totally usable in a track.
Those drum tracks are classic, tho
@@walfalcon Those drum-tracks slap harder than my drunk Stepdad.
The drums sound amazing processed too.
Well of course, this is how Brian Eno started out! Great ambient my friend! 🎹 🎶 😎
Brian Eno is a great influence for me. Thanks!
@@jlamores Me also my friend.
excited to give reels a try sometime soon! Thanks for this fun idea
Give it a try! It's really inspiring and fun
Beautiful sound. Sounds almost like a Farfisa Compact at 3.48.
This is the "Fantasy" sound!
@@jlamores fantasy is my favourite
@@masocre mine too
wonderful, with a Brian Eno kind of charm
Thanks! I love Brian Eno music! 💖💖
Great ambient tune and nifty combination of equipment! Casio keyboards rule!
Thanks! Yes. Casio keyboards are great. They have something special.
so cool!
Thanks! 😎
Love the MI figurine!
Yes 😃 It was a great little gift with all the Mutable products. I think I had the first one with a Shrutti kit.
This is great! Super soothing!
Thanks! 🧡🧡🧡
Yes I still remember, I had the Casio VL-Tone before, amazing technology long time ago. I also like your violin stand, subbed.
Thank you! 😀
nice thanks for recommending, casios are great!
Yes. They are great and very fun!
This is awesome! going to go see what it takes to build one of these Norns things
Thanks! Norns is great and very fun
Very peaceful. Oh and the more I watch your videos the more I want a Monome Norns... seems like an incredibly powerful device.
Thanks! The Norns is a chamaleonic device, so it can be anything. And the library of existing scripts is great and always growing. It's a great community. Buy it! :-)
@@jlamores do you own the norns without the grid controller? do you still think its a worthwhile investment on it's own? i have been fixated on it since I saw this video lol
@@xXCatsLoverXx Correct. I have a Norns but I don't have a Grid. There are lots of scripts you can use without a Grid. Look at my other videos where I use other scripts like GRD, Compass, Rebound, Awake, Orca,...without a Grid
José Luis Amores i’ll check them out, thanks for the response :) love this video by the way
@@xXCatsLoverXx Thanks! ♥️♥️
beautiful!
Thanks!! ♥️♥️♥️
I love this video so much - thank you! I have a VL-Tone and am so fascinated by Norns, but I have no coding or electronics experience and it seems a little intimidating...
You don't need coding experience to run the scripts in Norns. I encourage you to simply try a few. Most of the scripts are on the experimental side and are very fun to play with. Just play and enjoy. Very recomended.
I have one of these little keyboards and have wanted to include it in my music. This is inspired thank you!
Thanks! Add a little FX to the Casio and you are on heaven! 😀
@@jlamores my budget won't stretch as far as yours but I have a pair of monotron synths that will do just nicely 👍
@@SpeedStar76 We all have to remember the most important thing is the music, not the gear. There are lots of great examples of wonderful music done with very simple machines.
@@jlamores I like that 👍
I just discovered that you can actually program your own sounds into that little Casio I have been experimenting all afternoon.
@@SpeedStar76 Yes. It's a little bit tedious though, and you can't store the sounds, but it's a nice feature to have. Happy you got in love with your Casio again! 🧡🧡
That USB plant speaker sounds great.
😀😀😀
Me suscribo !!!
I have also the VL great little keyboard :)
Congratulations. It's cheap and very usable in your recordings or playing live 😀
José Luis Amores yes !!
brutal... qué buenas máquinas acabo de conocer.
😀 Eso está bien!
Beautiful!!
Thank you!
Hey Jose! What kind of DIY Norns is that? Looks almost identical to original one, but Shields looks very different, much smaller. Where did you get the pcb and the case? Many thanks!
Mine is a Fates. I think you cannot order it anymore, but you can ask to Okyeron. llllllll.co/t/fates-a-diy-norns-dac-board-for-raspberry-pi/22999
Fantastico !!!!
Gracias Manuel! 😍
Magnifique~
Merci beaucoup 💖💖
0:19 this bit is kinda cool, but it also sounds like somebody's pissing
Who knows! Maybe... 😂
excelente
Gracias! 😃
I mean it sounds way better than an OP1
Well, it's a different thing. Thanks!
👍👏👏😁
😎🥰🥰💖💖
Is there a difficulty in functionality between the Norn and the Norn shield?
No. The funcionality is exactly the same. But in the Norn shield you don't have battery and the jack connections are diferent.
This sounds amazing! Where can we pickup a DIY kit for the Monome Norns?
Thanks! What you can see it's a Fates. It's like a Monome Norns Shield, but it was done by denki oto. www.okyeron.com/denki_oto/
Or you can buy an original Monome Shield from Monome here: monome.org/
This is such a beautiful and inspiring track! I've known about the DIY Norns but I can't find nothing about the DIY Monome Norns Reels kit. Is it possible to buy it anywhere? Thanks for posting! 🙏
Thanks for your words! ♥️ Reels is the name of the running script. You are probably refering to the Fates kit. I don't know if is not selling anymore. Look here: llllllll.co/t/fates-a-diy-norns-dac-board-for-raspberry-pi/
@@jlamores Yes, sorry, I was actually asking about the physical kit. :) Thanks so much for your kind reply, I'll take a look asap, I'm really interested. Thanks again! 🙏
Where did you get the Norns kit from? Like the case!
Thanks. I got it from the Denki Oto website. I think they are not available anymore
If you buy the Norns Shield kit from Monome it comes with a basic case(top and bottom panel, with appropriate spacers to support everything). It’s not fancy, but it will hold everything together and provide some protection.
@@ErnieDulanowsky True! They say is not hard to build it.
Where can I get one of these recording devices ready to operate
I think they are now sold out. The easiest thing is to buy a Norns Shield, when they are available again, directly from Monome. market.monome.org/
POOOOOOOR???
😃 Don't take it too seriously. The price of this set is not too far from a OP1, though lower, I think
@@jlamores To be honest I only bought a VL-1 instead of a OP-1 because I’m way more comfortable stuffing a $45 synth into my backpack to take to work, than a $1,300 synth. Totally not an excuse for me being broke! 😅
@@OfficialAlexSanoko The VL-1 is a very nice little synth. Some sounds are really usable, and there is even a basic sound editing feature. 😀
Did this start out as get Carter by The Human League?
I don't know this song, but who knows!
very Human League sounding what ever it is, reminds me of "I am the Law "a bit too
I dunno the Norns cost about as much as an OP-1
DIY Norns is much cheaper, but you have to build it yourself. It's not difficult
A Raspberry Pi and the DIY Norns Shield is MUCH less expensive than a factory Norns...
@@ErnieDulanowsky That's right!
hey not bad.
😃😃😃 Thanks!
Mac, Modular Rack, Deluge, Pedals, Camera, Internet... and time.
Poor man, indeed.
True! Don't take it too seriously. It's just a funny title.
lmao
Sorry. What do you mean?
