- The Miss Universe pageant ended with a shocking twist Sunday night as host Steve Harvey mistakenly named the wrong contestant the winner and then, had to strip her of her crown.
Miss Colombia Ariadna Gutierrez was declared the new Miss Universe, but her reign lasted only a few minutes as Harvey soon realized he misread his cue cards. Miss Philippines, Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach, who had been originally named the first runner-up had actually won the pageant, Harvey explained. A stunned Alonzo Wurtzbach was then escorted to center stage and the tiarra that Gutierrez was wearing was removed and placed on Miss Philippines' head just before the program ended.

Initially I felt bad for Miss Colombia... but when I thought about it, the real injustice was done to Miss Phillipines - she didn't get to experience that moment of glory with the whole glitter and sparkles and music which every other Miss Universe did. When finally she got her turn, it was a bit embarrassing and confusing... she couldn't openly express her happiness because of how Miss Colombia might feel.
Miss Colombia, on the other hand, actually got a better deal. No one ever remembers the runner up - but she will be remembered because of this. She actually got her moment of triumph even though it lasted only for few minutes.
Honestly, they both are now remembered much more than they would have ever been if this mistake hadn't happened.

@@Girl-on-fire it’s embarrassing for everyone, including the organization, the outgoing Miss Universe who had to remove the crown from Miss Colombia’s head, and lastly, Miss Philippines who was told to take her first walk when she had nothing and no one around her to even signify her as the winner. Pure cringe.
It’s was embarrassing at the moment until all the other miss universes flocked together and bullied Miss Philippines and then Miss Colombia went on for future interviews and showed how immature and bitter she really is. She never deserved the crown. This should have been a true moment to show your real humble character and kindness and she was just opposite.

I am sure it was actually difficult for the girls to decide whom to approach as the situation was awkward for everyone even the other contestants.

I love how Miss USA whispers to PIA that she is a winner even though she can't believe it and isn't going to the stage. In this video, I also noticed Miss Bulgaria encouraging Miss Philippines
It's been 8 years already since this edition of Miss Universe happened... But, when I watch this again,, I can't still imagine how painful, shocking, embarrassing and frustrating this moment for the show,,, specially to the Girls, Miss Colombia and Miss Philippines... This is something that they cannot forget for the rest of their life.
What a classy man Steve is! Owning his mistake in front of thousands of people and million more people in their respective homes and even asking them to not hold his mistakes against the two ladies, knowing there would be mixed reactions from the live audience and the viewers. Well they told him to read the teleprompter and it said miss Columbia was the winner on the prompter. He should have looked at his card, walked back there to confirm but he's reading a teleprompter. So its not completely on him but he took it all on his shoulders. Class act.

1 : when she participated in blue fishtail gown, i was mesmerized by her innocent sparkling eyes having childlike vibe. She was a kind of beauty i could fall for even if she just woke up with messed hair, pyjama sans make up. Yes thats true beauty.
Then her swimsuit round sultry walk and there was a versatile diva who could easily switch her forms.
2 : during the MU announcement mishap. She was the undisputed winner but didnt let the natural supremacist tendency take over. She was hesitantto celebrate the most important moment of her life coz another woman was mourning her loss. She compassionately answered all the negativity from the loser brigade despite being the undisputed winner. What a sensitive person this must be.
3 : Finally I googled about her journey. She tried at binibining philipines twice and didn't give up despite humble background, losing twice & catching up age relative to other contestants. Such a positive person. Her reign was also so graceful
PS: Initially that disaster by Steve seemed like a huge injustice to Pia & Ariadna coz her moment was robbed... But the silver lining is that somewhere god wanted to show that she isnt just a well spoken, rehearsed & poised beauty we have every year as MU, she was much more. This lady came after 42 years of wait and what a person she is.
Kudos to Steve for going back out there to correct the mistake, knowing half the audience would devour him. And Paulina Vega saved the day - that was brave

I remember watching this and everybody was looking at each other in confusion when Colombia was announced the winner. We instinctively knew something was wrong....like the universe was out of sync or something. Then we saw Steve Harvey reluctantly returned to the stage...and we were like...OH SHIT! HE ANNOUNCED THE WRONG WINNER! We were floored. Pia was destined to win Miss Universe.

I’m sorry this happened to these women and the country they’re representing. I can understand the embarrassment of Miss Colombia and the reaction of her countrymen in the crowd cos if that happened to my candidate I would’ve gone booing with them too. What I don’t understand is the other candidates’ attitude towards the true crowned MU. I guess they thought they’d stand out for being the girls who comforted Miss Colombia on screen but the girls who comforted Miss Phils were the ones who actually stood out.

man what a moment, i remember me and my dad we're watching it live on tv and just hearing our neighbors SCREAMINGGG we had to get out of the house and cheer with them too, it was one of those moments where everyone was just collectively happy, even if they're complete strangers.

Me when Colombia was announced as the winner: It's okay Pia. First runner-up was the place you gave it all. No matter what happens, we will still support you. There's always been next year. No matter what it takes, even when we have to wait for years.
Me when there was a mistake: I'm shocked. Okay, we are so happy that Pia actually won the Miss Universe title, but I felt sorry to Colombia. Kudos to Miss Universe 2014. Paulina Vega handled the situation like a true Miss Universe. The fact that Colombia got back to back wins as Ariadna was crowned mistakenly. You can see how much excited both of them were. Yet Paulina didn't shade Pia at all, rather handled both Pia and Ariadna. Pia and Paulina still share a great bond

I wonder what's that feeling to be crowned and be de-crowned.
The mistake was caused because of the stupid new way in which they don't announce the 1st runner up but skip straight to announcing Miss Universe.
Previously, they use to announce thec1st runner up and then IMMEDIATELY, in the same breath, announce Miss Universe.
It worked well that way for years.
Why was that changed?

Maybe because when the announcement happens it's better to say the winners name instead of automatically knowing you're the winner right after 1st runners up is named. And it should be this way.
@@no.idea.man. Have you ever watched CHOPPED on the Food Channel? When its down to the last two, they announced who had been chopped and THEN announce the winner, although by then it's obvious who has won.
The Miss Universe, for DECADES, also came down to the last two. .......then, they announced the 1st runner up and in the same breath, With no pause, Immediately announce the Miss Universe.
The first runner up is Miss Chile, Miss Venezuela is our new Miss Universe ....one breath. One sentence.
That's the way it always was and shoukd remain.
@@josephbahri1403 Steve Harvey said that in the rehearsal, they told him to announce who the new Ms. Universe was, but on the card, Ms. Colombia was written in big letters so that's what he read. So it's the organizers' fault, not his. But he owned the mistake. Hats off to him.
@@shiiaustria8521 I'll bet money that Steve Harvey NEVER watched a Miss Universe show before. You couid tell he was awkward and uncomfortable throughout the show...........some people are naturally 'at home" with pageants, others are not. Steve is a wonderful TV personality, does a great Family Feud , but had NO BUSINESS doing a Miss Universe show.......just not his type of show. I felt so all along, well before HIS mistake......and it was HIS mistake.
He should never do that show again.
But I still say, they should go back to the Bob Barker style of announcing the 1st runner up and immediately, in the same breath, announce the Miss Universe ...
Thoss of us who have watched the show for 50+ years and are OF THE SHOW will understand. Steve is not OF THE SHOW. No history. The fact that he asked Miss Phillipenes to take her first walk as Miss Universe (after the correction) with the crown still on Miss Columbia's head is , for me , an even bigger blunder than what he had just apologized for.
Never again.
If I was miss Philippines I wouldn't know what to do. This is still one of the craziest thing that ever happened in a decade.

This was handled very badly! Mistakes happen...But it took too long to notice the mistake or rather to take action! Steve had the nerve to tell Miss Philippines to take her walk with no crown on her head! It just took to long to exchange the crown!
Worst , after he said i will take responsibility and it is a great night, he walked away from the stage!! Leaving Ms Columbia and Ms Philippines on stage the exchange the crown. How awful 😔
Nah it could've been handled a lot worse than this. Either way what would you have done once you figured it out? I think Steve handled it the best he could spur the moment
