  • The films of Jessica Hausner are not for the weak of mind. The Austrian-born director has a history of movies that deal with themes of religion, how we raise children, how we operate as a society, or just what drives humans. Her newest film Club Zero is about a teacher at a school (played spectacularly by Mia Wasikowska) who convinces her students that needing food is a state of mind and a weakness that can be driven out. On top of the complex themes, Hausner also has a fascinating visual language, where the sets and costumes can be their own conversation. I was lucky to have Hausner speak with me about being raised in a house of artists, working with Wasikowska, and trusting the audience to get her movies. Watch it here:

Club Zero is really creative and subverts almost everything - its kind of like a Rorschach for people's own ideologies - anyone can take it as an insult if they are overly sensitive to their own belief system. Jessica Hausner is totally unique and Mia Wasikowska continues to be brilliant in everything.
