Mealworm soup. Chile-lime cricket tacos. Charred avocado tartare with ant larvae.
In the West, edible insects have long been the domain of food adventurers, with few other takers - even as billions of people elsewhere on the planet count insects as a part of their traditional diets.
But as we explore in the Opinion Video above, a growing tribe of environmentalists, academics and entrepreneurs are arguing that edible insects must enjoy a wider acceptance to help create a more sustainable global food system and save the planet.
It’s a matter of numbers. The world’s population is booming. So, too, is agricultural production to meet the growing demand for food. Yet agriculture, particularly the production of meat, is a big driver of environmental harm.
Scientists have warned that unless we make major adjustments to the kinds of food we eat and how we produce it, we have no chance of meeting our climate goals. A change in dietary patterns, especially reduced demand for meat, would help relieve pressure on the environment and mitigate global warming.
That’s where insects come in. Though the research is still nascent, the early evidence suggests that some edible insects offer a more environmentally sustainable alternative to some conventional livestock. Insects also offer tremendous potential as pet food and a feed source for conventional livestock.
This video is the third in a series of short films we published this month examining problems with the food system. The first one explored the environmental harm of agriculture and the powerful lobby in the United States that has fought to maintain the status quo. The second exposed some ugly truths about the modern poultry industry.
Now it’s time for bugs. Whether you regard them as agents of filth or sources of nutrition, integrating more of them into your diet, this video argues, is among a suite of dietary changes that we urgently need to consider to deal with food insecurity, biodiversity loss and climate change.

In the 70s, it was acid rain, we had ten years to stop all the pollution or the acid rain would destroy all the crops and there would be massive starvation. All backed by science of course, didn't happen.
In the 80s, it was global cooling on the face of Time Magazine. Because of pollution, we had 10 years before the next ice age was coming. It would destroy the crops, there would be massive starvation all backed by science, didn't happen.
Then of course in the 90s, we had global warming and all of Al Gore's failed predictions.
The coast of Florida would be flooded, the oceans would rise, changes in the climate causing massive starvation ,we only have 10 years left, backed by science of course, never happened.
Now we have a scientific term that is so broad that is impossible to make a bad prediction ,climate change.

I don't think you can compare lobsters with insects. You can clean a lobster really well, take out the organs and digestive tract. We don't have to choose one or the other. Besides, population control does not have the potential beneficial effect of switching to a plant based diet. I've had crickets before, they're quite delicious. Crunchy, nutty & slightly grassy in taste, they make good snacks.
All the people refusing to give up meat are the reason why we'll get the Soylent Green future.
True! The UN found that animal agriculture contributes more to climate change than all transportation combined! They urged mankind to switch to a more plant based diet ASAP.

Algae yes, worms and bugs no. Still very interesting - Thank you!
If you like to eat shrimp, crab and lobsters they taste basically the same.
However if you don’t like any crustaceans. Yeah this will be a tough sell.
@@dr.carmichael530 It's just cultural traditions. I suppose I could eat them if I wouldn't recognize them as insects. But what's the point then? I am not dogmatically vegetarian. But I eat shrimps like once a year, fish three times (restaurant with family at traditional holidays), can't remember the last time I ate meat.
Anyway: Thanks for the info.
Seaweed like nori is delicious! That's my idea of tasty algae!
@@someguy2135 Yes! (Just watch out for too much intake of iodine ...)

I know people support this, I support this but this has some very terrible takes in it. Just to clarify, I support people trying and eating insects. Other than that…. There are some VERY terrible takes in this video.
Cicada nymph is delicious
what do they plan to feed these edible mass-marketed insects?
Depends. I think crickets like cabbage, which is super easy to grow?
Mealworms can eat all sorts of things.
Insects are way more efficient at converting food (for them) into edible protein.
For those people trying to encourage people to change their diets to save the planet, what have you done to reduce your footprint on Earth?
Do you live in a big house? Own a Car? How about a Dog? Do you use oil in any of the products you use? What about resources stolen from the Congo? What about reducing the human population if the Earth? Did you have, or will you have children? Opinions are great, but not from someone who is a hypocrite. You know, do as I say, not as I do.

It isn't the only thing we should do to fight climate change and environmental degradation, but since it is the most effective thing, it is the first thing to do on our list.

you know what Bugs me ? ok ok kidding aside this'll come to pass and future generations will have no issues with eating insects.
The good news is that we do not need to resort to eating bugs to avoid the damage to our environment from animal agriculture. The largest organization of nutrition professionals officially declared-
"It is the position of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics that appropriately planned vegetarian, including vegan, diets are healthful, nutritionally adequate, and may provide health benefits for the prevention and treatment of certain diseases.
These diets are appropriate for all stages of the life cycle, including pregnancy, lactation, infancy, childhood, adolescence, older adulthood, and for athletes. Plant-based diets are more environmentally sustainable than diets rich in animal products because they use fewer natural resources and are associated with much less environmental damage. Vegetarians and vegans are at reduced risk of certain health conditions, including ischemic heart disease, type 2 diabetes, hypertension, certain types of cancer, and obesity. Low intake of saturated fat and high intakes of vegetables, fruits, whole grains, legumes, soy products, nuts, and seeds (all rich in fiber and phytochemicals) are characteristics of vegetarian and vegan diets that produce lower total and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels and better serum glucose control. These factors contribute to reduction of chronic disease. Vegans need reliable sources of vitamin B-12, such as fortified foods or supplements."

Interesting but I honestly could never eat it
Hi Ashley
You got a cute name. Lol
If you eat factory-farmed meat/dairy or pesticide-laden produce (i.e., any meat, dairy, or produce sold in a US supermarket), it is the height of hypocrisy and ignorance to express "revulsion" at the notion of eating insects. What's in your hot dog? What's in your turkey burger? What's covering your apple/peach/strawberry? C'mon now.
hahaha....i can see those horrific scenes of chicken farms in front of my eyes....true hypocrites

That gives one more reason to go vegan. Here are some more.
The benefits of switching to a purely plant based diet are amazing.
1-Your own health (vegans are less likely to get several deadly chronic diseases)
2-Helping to end animal agriculture would reduce the chance of another pandemic & other zoonotic diseases
3-Helping to end animal ag would reduce the chance of the development of an antibiotic resistant pathogen.
4-Animal ag wastes a huge amount of fresh water
5-Animal ag is a major cause of water pollution
6-Animal ag is a major cause of deforestation
7-Animal ag increases PTSD and spousal abuse in the people who work in slaughterhouses
8-Animal ag is a major cause of the loss of habitat and biodiversity
9-Animal welfare, obviously
10- It is the single most effective way for each of us to fight climate change and environmental degradation.
11- Longer lifespan.
12- Healthier weight (vegans were the only dietary group in the Adventist Studies that had an average BMI in the recommended range.)

Bees are already threatened! Don't give them the idea to make it worse!
just asking: if america swapped out cows and pigs and chickens for grasshoppers, etc. today, what impact would the corporate mega-factory farming of insects have on the planet?
The environmental impact would be far less negative, so that's worth supporting even if you're vegan or vegetarian.
@@Erik291098 From an environmental viewpoint, it would be much better, but not needed since humans can get all the nutrients needed from plant based foods. Some plant based food is B12 fortified.
