Man… this is undoubtedly my dream car. I’ve very little experience with stick shift though, and I’m scared that when I FINALLY save up the money to get one, I won’t be able to properly test drive one lol. I’m looking at todays prices (about $30k for 60-80k miles.) and I’m I have no idea how I’m gonna get this money… I sold my brand new Honda civic and downgraded to a grandma owned 2006 Honda civic i 33k miles! Now I hope I can save up the money at a fast enough rate to catch up to the climbing prices!!! Anyone have any idea how i could convince someone to let me test drive their s2000 at least once? Lol!! Don't get a s2000 if you are lacking experience in driving rear wheel cars. The car will bite and kill you if you don't know how to recover from a drift. A Mazda Miata is way more forgiving. I own a 2005 AP2 with NO traction control.
The s2000 is my favorite car of all time with the Miata being my next. When it came time for me to buy amy first car I settled for a Miata. Maybe one day I'll own a s2000. Though the Miata is still good fun.

100% Disagree the s2000 is a "Modern day classic". its WAY more than that. Classics signify that its almost everyone's cup of tea, and widely popular. The S2000, is a glove that fits very select hands. There's cars that are Classics, and there's a MARVEL. This is a cult rebel, a deadly weapon only few samurai can wield. This car isn't quiet, soft, roomy, practical, suited for most but instead its the definition of raw and wild in one of the best examples to date. It wasn't marked, made, or even driven for the majority. Classic isn't its label.
Thank you so much for watching, I’m glad you enjoyed it! I would very much appreciate if you could give the video a like to help push it into the UA-cam algo and give me the motivation to produce more content for you guys!
Man, I have owned my AP2 for 6 years, which I've modded and replaced every bushing and bearing, and I have to be real: this is waxing poetic about a car that has flaws but people just refuse to accept. The S2000 has super numb steering. It has a first-generation electronic steering rack which provides no lateral feedback. It is horrible. Steering wheel vibration is not feedback. Every steering wheel will vibrate by virtue of being connected to the wheels. "Steering feedback" is how the wheel loads up/deloads while driving. That gives you a clearer idea of what the front tires are doing. Because of this, you rely more on your feet/butt to feel for traction. It's not a deal breaker, but it's not as good as it could be. The S has great stock brakes but horrible brake cooling, so that needs to be addressed. I melted a piston into a caliper once, and that seized my brand new wheel bearing. Oh yeah, the cars eat wheel bearings. I have replaced more wheel bearings than the car has wheels. Valve adjustments need to be done pretty frequently otherwise the car runs rich, and the AP1's valve retainers need to be replaced unless you want to drop a valve. Engine mounts on all these cars are just about dead, and because they're never replaced, the constant bucking from the engine under load puts unnecessary wear on the clutch guide bearing sleeve. This then kills your master clutch cylinder. The stock suspension is horrible, and needs to be replaced with quality coilovers to actually have the car handle well. The car is also 20 years old at this point. If you buy an S2000, you're going to be replacing everything. EVERYTHING. Every bushing and bearing, all the fluids, every single consumable you can think of including your clutch, etc. That costs a lot of money. I got my car for $18k and spent damn near that much repairing all the little niggles that come with owning an old car. Granted, I take my car to an S2000 specialist and don't work on it myself since I live in an apartment, but you're still going to spend that time and money fixing these issues. I understand the fascination with the car, but I guarantee anyone who drives an ND2 Miata next to an S2000 will be more impressed with the driving dynamics of the Miata. The chassis is tighter, weighs 500 lbs less, has the same FMR/50-50 layout, and a way better torque curve. If you love the S (which I do as it came out when I was in middle school and it was my dream car), it's fantastic. But if you are buying the car expecting some God-tier driving experience in stock form, you're in for a surprise.
I had one also and completely agree. The chassis also lacks rigidity. It's just not stiff. Despite all the X brace etc. The chassis flexes on turn in at the front end. This becomes even more annoying on stiffer springs. It also has low slide controllability. It's great but far from perfect. And yeah, the steering feel is straight up awful. Both the RX8 & ND show a mid, front engined car with double wishbones can be fantastic to slide around. S2K, not so much.
Haha wow what a negative nancy you are. Ap1 retainers are totally fine unless you’re money shifting! Valve adjustments don’t need to be done as frequently as you make out either, I did mine 20k ago and just checked and they were exactly the same. Also the steering isn’t amazing but it’s not “super numb” you’re getting on the bandwagon of all the negative things people say about the car. It’s got much more positives then the limited number of slight negatives you mentioned, find a car that doesn’t have any negetives, I’ll wait.
I agree on the brakes 100% and would love some advice on how to get mine to stop how it should. The steering could def be improved but ill be damned if I don’t feel the weight of my groceries in the trunk. I won’t say you’re wrong as I’ve only got 2 years under my belt.. but wouldn’t you say if these are the only problems for a mass produced experiment of a car who’s slogan should simply be “because racecar”.. wouldn’t that mean the s2000 needs even more
drive by wire did make it much easier to tweak the tune though; but agreed on VSA... first time I experienced it I thought something was seriously broken!
You must have an ap1 ❤ and to play devils advocate, I think a lot of people pushed these cars without having the experience needed and they were getting totaled too often. I hate to admit.. I’ve been reckless with every car I’ve owned always chasing that feeling and my 09 which is the most watered down version scares me at its limits. If I never was a jackass driver over all those years.. vsa on or not I would be another statistic pushing this 4 wheeled street bike 😅
@@danmontoya877 do you drive go karts? I think it very much depends on the driver, my AP1 has a even sharper setup than stock, much more traction but even then i personaly feel most comfortable in that car at it's limits, it's literally like driving a gokart, you have to be quick catching it but with good bucket seats and a smaller radius steering wheel, you can feel very early when the rear want's to step out. AP1 and AP2 stock form and setups isn't good enough for track use, no matter which version you have, the magic of the car reveals when you start tuning the suspension in the right way and try to find your personal setup.
