  • “No End in Sight” marks a strong ending for Toto’s Falling in Between, but with a hint of melancholy.
The song delivers powerful and progressive drumming by Simon Phillips locked with Mike Porcaro’s sweeping bass parts. David Paich weaves his acoustic piano with Greg Phillinganes’ synth and organ to create a traditional Toto keyboard feel to the song. Steve Porcaro returns to add additional synthesizer and sonics.
Despite the heavy keyboard presence, Toto is never weighed down by it. Steve Lukather’s staccato-like guitar only enhances the progressive-rock elements of the song.
Bobby Kimball and Steve Lukather trade lead vocals, with Kimball handling the bridge. Kimball is well cast in this role, providing yet another stand-out performance. The final chorus is as strong as any other on a Toto song.
Guitars, bass, drums, keyboards, and synth strings bring Falling in Between to a fitting climax. But the album’s non-U.S. editions keep going, with a bonus track called “The Reeferman.” At only 36 seconds, it barely deserves to be called a song, but provides an enticing fusion jam highlighting Simon Phillips, Lenny Castro on percussion, and the late Roy Hargrove Jr. on trumpet and flugelhorn.
Unfortunately, this is the last we will ever hear of this version of Toto. Falling in Between marked the final studio album for the late Mike Porcaro. Meanwhile, despite this project’s musical highlights and a successful world tour that followed, issues which had been building since the late ’90s led to significant upheaval in Toto - then their first hiatus.
