I went on a shop hop in September and October to all 6 New England states (90 shops). One of my goals was to purchase blue fabrics for this exact quilt. I agree with using solid white for the snowflake. Though I only bought 1/4 yards, I bought so many. I'm hoping it will be enough for 2 quilts. I think it will be my next quilt I work on. Your quilt came out beautiful.
Love your quilt in the blue fabric. I am working on 5 of these quilts using scrappy Christmas fabric that my mom gave me in January. She passed away in June so I am using her fabric to make quilts for my kids, my nephew and my sister. I have waited to quilt the first one, trying to decide how I wanted to quilt it. I think what you did looks great! Saw Michelle's video this morning. Her buffalo check background looks great too.
I hope working with your mother’s fabrics brings you joy and helps you deal with the loss. I know your kids, nephew and sister will treasure these quilts.
That’s such a sweet idea! What a wonderful way to honor your mom! I am so sorry for your loss. I hope working with her fabric on these special projects will give you some comfort. ❤️
Our quilt guild members did a snowflake like this with a fusible gridded interfacing. I think it went like this: Fuse squares. Fold over a row at a time RST. Sew along each row. Snip at intersections. Sew the opposite way, etc. It got so bulky with the interfacing. We exchanged squares for a lot of variety, but if not all cut exactly the same or fused super accurately, plus the bulk, it gets a bit wonky. Also hard to quilt with the bulky intersections.
Love the scrappy version! I think you made the right choice about the sports-themed fabric, this wasn’t the right place for that. Enjoy your new cuddly quilt 🎉
This is on my to do list for a quilt project wish list. I have a tote of Christmas fabrics to make mine scrappy and I was going to make the snowflake scrappy but … now I am rethinking it. I think a solid white is going to be the way to go.
I, too am from PA. Armstrong County. I sure like my Accur Quilt cutter. New England, too! Have you followed me? I lived in Massachusetts. My husband was in the military. Love the colors.
Fat Quarter Shop had this pattern as a flash sale item today. I lived it, but decided to pass. Then after your video, I decided I would get it, and it had sold out... Sounds about for my luck, lol.
I had seen many photos of these snowflake quilts and decided to make starting over a year ago. I didn’t buy the pattern, and am using smaller squares. I didn’t manage to get it done before Christmas, and then I just set it aside… and it’s been sitting since. You’ve inspired me to finish it. I love how you quilted it!
Thank you! The fabric is called Crystal Frost. Here's a link: www.missouriquiltco.com/products/crystal-frost-108-snowflakes-blue-108-wide-backing/?variant=40377966395427
Thank you! I've been walking a few miles a day and eating a lot less. It has taken some time, but all of a sudden it became noticeable this summer. Slow and steady!
❤I love this quilt! I really enjoyed the diary entries 🗒 format!!! ❄️ The single white fabric snowflake was definitely the way to go imo. 🧵 I'm definitely gonna look into this leaders & enders thing! It sounds like something I didn't know that I needed. Thank you! ❤

Your quilt is beautiful! Congratulations, On the weight loss, i enjoyed watching it through the video. Great way to watch a long time quilting project! So Smart.
Just love this quilt - absolutely gorgeous! I also liked you telling us about your decisions and the technicalities of the quilt, via the diary process. Weight loss is great too!
I agree that the Red Sox and Patriots fabric did not belong in the quilt, even though I'm a big Red Sox fan (from Upstate New York). What a beautiful quilt - I love scrappy.
Ohhhh! That would be amazing! You could swap with a friend like I did. It was nice to get a variety and have fabric in it that reminds me of my friends.
Lovely quilt, Kris! I like it better without the sport fabric. I'd like to do a wall hanging version. I appreciate seeing your quilting with the walking foot. I forgot about the curvy stitches. I'm almost ready to try quilting on my embroidery machine. I'll practice first. Those practice pieces may be good for Christmas presents. Pillows, pot holders, maybe a large bowl cozy! Take care, Marion
I love all your videos Kris. I am your biggest fan from Australia. Out of all the quilting ladies in the USA if I had a chance I would love to meet you. The way you teach is so kind. Love to know about your success of weight loss and what you are doing to achieve that!! I could also lose a few kilos. All the best. You are again my favourite. Monica from Australia
You are SO sweet! I'm so glad my videos are helpful to you! Thank you for being such a great fan. It’s so much fun to connect with people all over the world! I would love to get to Australia some day. As for the weight loss, slow and steady is key for me. I have been at this for a long time now, but got pretty serious in the spring. I started exercising more, drinking water, and eating (somewhat) better. Lately I have added dense bean salads to my diet. There are a ton of different recipes out there. This has helped me with snacking. Hope this helps!
Your snowflake quilt looks fabulous. I love the idea of the metallic thread feature in the quilting. The humble wave, which I actually use a lot myself, really comes alive with the metallic thread. Must keep that in mind. I have one metallic thread so need to use it. I enjoyed the end part where you were sorting your fabrics. I am not very good with this but you have been helping me over the time here with you to give me an idea of how and what to be thinking about and thanks to you I am getting better. Thank you. See you next video. Your Aussie Friend.
I bought the Snowflake pattern last summer. It got lost in the mail, and I ended up in a back and forth correstpondence with the designer, Nicole Daksicwicz. She was super nice, by the way. I have my fabric picked out, but I haven't started it yet. (Got to finish those last Christmas gifts first). Black, Red and White Christmas Fabrics with Kona Quicksilver for the snowflake. Your blue scrappy version is so beautiful. Thanks for sharing.
Oh my God Kris, I just bought this pattern and I also wanted to do it in Blue. You have inspired me. I need to get on it. Thanks a bunch. You look fabulous and your quilt is amazing.
This is a great pattern. I just purchased it and am planning on making the scrappy on using Christmas prints in my scrap bin. Thanks for sharing the journey.
I just bought the pattern and I"m excited. I have a bunch of blues in my stash that will work perfectly. I always do a quilt for our gift exchange game at Christmas with my kids and this will be perfect. Your quilt is lovely. Thanks you for sharing a great project!!
This was so fun to come along on this journey with you! Sign me up for a Sew the Distance sticker in 2025 😂. I love the quilting (including the pink & purple 😂) and can’t wait to try something like this!! The backing was also gorgeous !!
@ when I saw you display the quilt i immediately thought “do you have to piece together blocks of the same colour or can you just cut one large block” but then you mentioned it int he video ! Haha you should get commission for this quilt pattern! Hahahhaha
@@SewtheDistance you’re such a refuge on the internet, Chris. I hope you know that. There is so much hate on social media, abuse, people being really nasty. It’s horrific. But your channel is a place of love, fun, and fabric. ❤️🥰 thank you for what you do.
Thank you so much! I have been exercising consistently, drinking water, and (somewhat) eating better. I do make a dense bean salad every few days which is my go-to snack right now. I have been a vegetarian for about eight years now (for health reasons), so I think adding more protein with the beans has helped. Although I have been working on weight loss for about a year now, I got more serious about it in the spring. I am also really loving my body more, not beating myself up for the pudge, etc. That has really helped me! Bodies are amazing things! Hope this helps.
It’s beautiful, Kris! I will definitely buy the pattern and make this design. I have a lot of blue in my scraps and stash. Need to finish a few WIPs first. Thank you for another great video. I see the little strawberry needle sharpener still hangs on your wall!🙃 Cheers, Lili
I’m so glad you liked it! It is a fun one! I LOVE that strawberry! I use it, too! It was such a wonderful gift. I am forever grateful for it and for your generosity!
Enjoyed the video so much - loved the snowflake quilt so much. You make it all look so easy.... I really, really like the fabric you chose for the binding. Thanks for sharing ❤🧵
I love how your quilt turned out! and have to add that you look GORGEOUS! as well 🥰! It's wonderful to see the collaboration of you all and your takes on this pattern. I'm thinking maybe I'll try it, too, but use bands of various christmas prints like the pattern shows in solids for my background. Thank you for sharing your quilting ideas as well ❤. I get sooo inspired by watching all the great youtube tutorials from quilters like yourself! Thank goodness the weather here has ended my gardening season, it's officially QUILT season at my house 😂!!!
I love the video diary format! It’s nice to see your whole process to making this beautiful quilt! It’s interesting, I’ve seen the pattern and wasn’t drawn to the picture and the fabric that it was shown in! I know that I can change the fabric but it was a great reminder to try to visualize the pattern in different fabrics! I love, love, love your blue scrappy version so much better and I’m going to try and find the pattern! I recently reorganized my sewing room and I have a lot of blue fabric! I’m not even sure where I purchased some of it!😀 Thank you so much for sharing!❤
I love seeing how you can change the feel of a quilt just by changing the fabric! I hope you find the pattern and enjoy making this as much as I did. Thank you so much for watching and sharing! ❤️
What colour thread did you use, just wondered if you had to change thread frequently from lighting dark on top. It's a beautiful quilt. Thanks for sharing
I used a super fine thread on the top. It is Superior Threads Microquilter #100. The color is 7018. When I made the sample block (I don't talk about that in the video but I do review it in the blog), my machine wasn't too happy having the same thread in the bobbin, so I changed it to a navy blue 50 weight cotton thread and it worked well. I thought you were supposed to have the same thread weight on the top and bottom, but for some reason, my machine (Janome 6700P) didn't love it. As for the color, I typically match the bottom thread with the backing, just because I am still not great at machine quilting and it hides some of the mistakes. 😀 I hope this helps!
Thank you so much! I use a pretty big stitch length--around 3.5--for quilting because I love the look of it. I also used a 100% cotton batting for this one. I bought a roll of it a few months ago, but when I buy it again, I am going to get 80/20. Hope this helps!
Thank you! I wonder if it is a regional saying? People look at me funny when I say it here. Go figure! So, this is my very first time using metallic thread. I honestly had to no idea how to do it, so I just went by the seat of my pants and used my normal 50 weight Aurifil cotton in the bobbin. I am still not sure if that was "right," but it worked.
Your quilt turned out beautifully!! I love the little bit of sparkle the metallic thread added. It glistens like the snow!! I'll admit I a little sad face when you went with cotton for the backing, but that backing fabric just went so good that it was definitely the right choice! I have the pattern and all the fabric to make hubby and I each one. This is one time I wish I had an Accuquilt..som.much.cutting. Thank you for all the tips! I also have a Janome (not the exact one you have) for the walking foot quilting, which stitch did you use and what stitch length? I typically use the walking foot and the serpentine stitch, but was also thinking of trying the more organic waves like you did.
Thank you so much! So glad you like this! I love the metallic for that reason, too. It really made the quilting pop. I know--the cotton batting--ugh. I bought a roll of it in February, I think, and have been working through it. My next roll will be an 80/20 for sure. It really is a matter of using up what I have right now. I am with you--cotton wasn't probably the best choice. There is a ton of cutting! Michelle from The Simple Quilter used a Stripology ruler. That would work well, too. I bought my Accuquilt about ten years ago and haven't regretted it once. Worth the money. I use it all the time. As for the quilting, I used a straight stitch and just moved the quilt as I put it through. I am a little weird and use a very large stitch length (between 3.5-3.8 usually) because I love the look. I love the serpentine stitch, too, and use it a lot, but for this one, I just moved the quilt. I also overlapped the lines some to give it the look of wind. Hope this helps!
@SewtheDistance I do have the huge Stripology, but I cannot seem to move just the ruler...the fabric always manages to shift on me, whether it's me doing it on accident or static cling 🤦🏼♀️ maybe I should light rub the back with a dryer sheet. Thank you for the stitch information! I should make a test sandwich and give it try.

It turned out wonderful. I love the scrappy look and the quilting brought it all together. Great job! Thank you for sharing the process.
I'm glad you enjoyed the process! It was a fun project.
I agree with you on the Patriots fabric. I would remove it too.

Oh, so interesting! I can see how that would be hard!
I have made three from this quilt pattern. IT IS SO EASY! I did one scrappy, one with stripes (Christmas), and one solid (also Christmas green)
I love that you made a few! It’s such a fun pattern to play with! I want to make more.
looks like a really fun quilt💜
It was! Loved this one!
Love the scrappy version! I think you made the right choice about the sports-themed fabric, this wasn’t the right place for that. Enjoy your new cuddly quilt 🎉
Thanks, Andi! I think so, too! I hope you are doing well.
I loved this video diary format! It was so fun to see your quilt come together and all the choices you made along the way!
Thank you! I'm so glad you liked it! It was fun, but as you know, this format had challenges, too.
Your creation is absolutely beautiful! Thank you for sharing! Congratulations on your weight loss journey!

That is awesome! I'm so glad I could inspire you to finish your quilt! Fallon @sewbeitquilts used smaller squares for hers. Such a good idea!
You know how much I ❤ scrappy & blue for the win. Leader/ender projects also for the win!
YESSSS! I love that leaders and enders works well for this pattern. I have to make another!
Love the idea of random use of metallic threads. Beautiful project.
Thanks, I had so much fun playing with them!
Another transplanted Bostonian here! I did like the sports squares but I think it looked better afterwards. Such a gorgeous family heirloom!
Boston Strong! ❤️ So glad you enjoyed the video!
Oh, for sure on lining up the points. My HSTs were so bad that I hand-sewed sequins around the entire snowflake to cover that problem!
That's a great idea! Love it! So smart.
Your quit is beautiful. I love snow fakes. Thank you.
Thank you!
My pleasure. So glad you like it!
Love your Snowflake quilt! The blue shades are perfect! ❄️🧵🪡✂️❄️

Love the quilt! And you look fabulous! What have you been doing?
Merry Christmas 🎄

❤I love this quilt! I really enjoyed the diary entries 🗒 format!!!

Interesting about 'fatback,' I always knew it to mean smoked pork or herring.

Really like how your quilt turned out.

I would have left the sport themed fabrics in because it's not like the quilt is hanging on a wall where it's noticeable. I think they were a nice little surprise that would make the recipient smile when they saw them.
That's a good point! As you saw, I did take it out, but I may incorporate it into the label. I did leave the ice cream and the millennium fabrics in.
Yes. I would change those blocks😊 always enjoy your tutorials Kris😊

Thank you so much! So glad you like this format! I think I will do it again. It was nice to get a quilt finished while working on other projects.
Turned out beautiful! Good call on changing the two blocks. I've always heard it called a spider when you start sewing with a scrap of fabric.

YES! It was hard to take them out, but I think I will add them to the label. Gotta represent!
When I look at scraps all I see is potential.
I want to make a red and white snowflake quilt....i just dont have enough red scraps yet...so its on the quilt bucket list.

Thank you! I’m so happy to share my quilting journey with you! ❤️
I'm so glad you are inspired! Quilt season is the best! LOVE it!
Thank you so much for your kind words and love! 🥰
Well done.
Thank you! ❤️
This is a great tutorial. Love the weight loss and the gray. I did the same this year. Yes I would change just by the one sample picture.
Thank you so much! ❤️ So glad you like it. I did end up changing it. I will probably add those fabrics to the label.
Yes, I would change those two blocks
Thank you! I did! I like it better. I think I will add them to the label.
Currently working on this pattern.
I love this pattern! You will have a beautiful quilt!
It is gorgeous. Love it thank you for this video
You’re welcome! So glad you liked it!
The Quilt is so pretty. What stitch length did you use for your quilting and do you use 80/20 batting?
Thank you so much!
I use a pretty big stitch length--around 3.5--for quilting because I love the look of it. I also used a 100% cotton batting for this one. I bought a roll of it a few months ago, but when I buy it again, I am going to get 80/20. Hope this helps!
Very pretty! Here in central Va. we always called it *fat backs*. 😊 when using metallic on top what thread in bobbin?
❤❤❤
Thank you for the love!
I know what you mean. I really love the Creative Grid rulers. They have some grips on the back. So glad you like this!
Iam in Northwest PA
PA is the best! Although it is a bit cold today. I am in NEPA.
Did you finish snowflake yet?
