- This video will cover five of the most essential coordinate geometry topics that come up in the GRE and GMAT, from Quadrants and slopes, to x-intercepts and perpendicular lines, this video has so much for you - whether you are just starting with this topic or consider yourself quite adept.

First, I start off easy and show how Quadrants I - IV go anticlockwise from top right.
Then I show the y-axis, x-axis and origin.
I will then cover how to use the famous y = mx + b (or sometimes called y = mx + c) equation.
Then I will discuss how the slope = m = rise/run = y2 - y1/x2 - x1
And how the y-intercept = b = where the line crosses the vertical axis.
We will find the equation of a line: y = 3/4x - 3/2
You might also see this written as 4y - 3x + 6 = 0
This is called the ax + by + c = 0 version of the line.
The x-intercept = where line crosses x axis = when y is 0
Parallel and perpendicular lines: If the slopes are the same, the lines are parallel. If the slopes are the negative reciprocal of one another, then they are perpendicular slopes.
Which of the following lines are either parallel OR perpendicular to the line 4y - 3x + 6 = 0?
Tick all that apply.
y = 4/3x + 5
y = -4/3x + 6 (perp)
4y + 5 = 3x (parallel)
4x + 3y + 4 = 0 (perp)
4x - 3y + 5 = 0
Finally, I put this together in a question with multiple parts to test your knowledge.

GRE and GMAT are two of most used graduate exams for those seeking to study a Masters Degree or Masters in Business Administration (MBA) degree. The Graduate Record Exam and Graduate Management Admissions Test have been taken for over 50 years and are taken by approximately 600,000 and 300,000 people worldwide annually, respectively. These exams are typically taken between the ages of 18-40, by those who have completed, or are about to complete, their Bachelors Degree.

This was so helpful! I could have done so much better in previous geometry classes if I had more teachers like you. This has been a break through for me while studying for the GRE. Thank you!
Thanks Liz! Do check out the rest of the geometry Week playlist
I always struggled with coordinate geometry. But your videos have taught me the concept properly. One of the best sources to get GRE explanation, specifically to those studying by themselves!
Thank you so much!
Glad to help!
life saver
Hope it went well!
You are a genius! My exam is very near. Only 11 days are left. I am facing difficulties to solve coordinate geometry questions. Although, they are very frequent in the exams. But this video has helped me to solve anything on coordinate geo. Hats off !!
Hope it went well!
@@TheTestedTutor it went well, I scored 165 on the quant section just following your videos. I got only one question from coordinate geometry out of 3 sections. My experimental section was quant.
Tested tutor!!! the name that first came to mind after taking the test today. I can say I have watched about 90% of your Quant videos and your tricks were really helpful.
Thank you very much and Cheers!
You make every concept easy to understand. Thank you!

You're the best
I literally gave up and had no hopes of moving ahead with this segment until i came across your video on this. Thank you for this detailed explanation and methodology
Thank you for simplifying these concepts of coordinate geometry
This video was very helpful. Now I actually understand slope intercept and why I would use it. I have the GRE coming up, and I am so grateful for this video!
Great to hear! Good luck Mia
You are so humble Mr Phillip..Thanks so much.
I had a lot of problems understanding this concept....You made it so simple. Thank you so much :)
thanks for brushing up my concept. My GRE exam is on Jan 06, even after my exam i will still avidly enjoy your videos. Keep up the good work. Perfekt.
Thanks for staying on Niraj! Means a lot.
Thank you for an amazing video, you have no idea how much you have made my life easier
Thank you very much!!! This video has really helped me a lot ❤
so simple and to the point, thank you for these videos they're an immense help!!
for line equation
y-(-3) -3-1.5
-------- = ---------- = slop
x-(-2) -2-4
y+3 3
------ = ----
x+2 4
4y+12=3x+6
y= 3/4 x - 6/4
I am confused. Where did you get these values from ?
@@deepakvijayakumar7112 points (-3,-2) (1.5,4) slop of this must be equal to slop of points on the line.(concept)
Keep enlighten us with your GRE knowledge sir
You are the one person thats helping me pass my math class/final😭😭
I really want to give you a hug. This is perfect!!!!! You also made me understand functions.
Thanks for the virtual hug! I am glad it helped

ur truely a pro and u deserve more than anything thank u so much sir
goddamn man, this is one of THE best tutorials ive come across.
Thanks man
Hello Philip,
The video was very interesting and I loved it, I just have one doubt in, while finding perpendicular line equation we have to flip the slope and change the sign that I understood but my question is do we have to flip the y-intercept i.e. b also?
Thank you so much for your videos, please have you had time to make the parabolas videos?
Thank you! Parallel lines have the same slope same radium and they will never meet
Thank you for your efforts.
Can you please make a video on cylinders, and surface areas?
Very elaborated videos, feel appreciated from Murang'a county, Kenya,254. God bless you
A mind blowing lesson, very helpful and It covered pretty much everything you need to know for a standardized test like GRE/GMAT /SAT or CAT. I have been looking for a video like this for a while for my upcoming GRE test and It answered everything I needed to know. A brilliant work. Thanks
Glad it was so helpful Arif, that's great to hear!
I recommend anyone who is preparing for standardized test should watch this video before solve any question
Thank you so much Philip, your videos have been helpful thus far. God Bless You!
Love your content so much! I feel much more confident after watching your lectures. Thank you so much for all your efforts!
Thanks Disha!
Really helpful Thankyou
This is a great video to understand coordinates. Hopefully will be ready for GMAT in November. I would like to ask if you can provide us with secrets to acing the GMAT test. Anything would be helpful :) Things that made you work through the questions faster to combat the 2 minutes timing.
Always great for learning and reviewing!
You have a gift!!! So glad you are using it :)
Wow thank you
much love from Azerbaijan! thanks for all the useful information you share with us!!!
Thank you from London!
Thanks a lot Philip for another great video! Just a gentle reminder for you to make a video on inequalities and most importantly on functions! Please
Yes been working on that all day. Hopefully out tomorrow! Thank you Mansi.

best explaination of coordinate geometry
Thanks again. Great video.
Hey Tested Tutor! Please make a video on advanced topics of co-ordinate geometry. That would be really helpful! Thanks
