  • Hi everyone - I found a few stunning vintage make-up compacts and I wanted to show you how I 'upcycled' them to be more than a display piece, by repressing some blushes with less than pretty packaging.

Stratton and Mascot were the main compact / lipstick holder brands here in the UK in the 20th century. Almost every woman had one in her handbag and used several times a day for a quick dab of powder, even if they never wore any other type of makeup. Like refillable fountain pens and propelling pencils, The compacts were a classic "coming of age" gift for every teen girl.
De - potting was not necessary ; The refills from many different brands were all a standard size circular pan and came in disposable cardboard or flimsy celluloid packaging to be lifted out and placed directly into the metal compact. Many lipsticks were the same - people wore their one favourite shade that went with everything, bought a refill when they ran out and popped them out of their cardboard tube into the fancy holder to carry round and use. This worked well when everything was a universal size and saved money and landfill waste.
Now everything comes as single use packaging, but maybe with concern for the amount of plastic & landfill waste we'll see a return to owning a long - term fancy compact / holder and re-using it with product refills?

These compacts women would buy and reuse. Back in the day you could take your compact in and have the cosmetician custom blend your blushers or powders and fill your compact. Elizabeth Arden is an example of where they would go to refill their compact. Women were so much more elegant and feminine. I love the concept.

Morrison Muzik I think the beauty industry and perfume industry needs to come back to this. Not only does it feel glamorous but it helps the environment. A lot of cosmetics have beautiful packaging but it’s sad to see that it’s only a one time use and will just sit there in the landfill.

I think that they used to make things last longer back in the day! I mean just look at all those beautiful older cars that are still around today! They would take so much more pride in their work! I know they’re are people out there that do, but not as much as the older days ☺️

FYI your Stratton compact is self opening....you open the lid then slowly push the lid back till the inner lid pops open on its own. When you want to close it make sure to manually close the inner compartment before the lid. It saves wear and tear on the latches.
I collect them myself. Hope this is useful info 😉

You are so clever! I am gifting my great aunt's sterling silver Birks compact to my 25 year old daughter this Christmas and am so glad to see your solution to fitting in new powder. I remember when we would go to The Hudson's Bay Company and the cosmetics counter would install new powder into the compact for my aunt - such great memories! Thank you for sharing, your compacts look wonderful, I sure agree with you - they don't make compacts like they did anymore!

still a great idea. rimmel stay matte depotted fits right it and you don't have to break the powder. that ring holds the new powder in place, also mac and other companies sell refills of face powder so you just buy one and put it in.

Wow, those compacts are beautiful. What a great idea to repress new makeup into them! I tried something similar but it was with a Jane Iradale refillable compact. I depotted a Revlon powder and put the pan in the nicer compact because it was the same size. I think the brand recently discontinued the metal compacts, which is a bummer. The Jane Iradale powder made my face itchy, but the compact was too nice not to use. I just looked through my makeup to find a pan the same size but I never thought of repressing something!

If you don’t want to depot your blush and reform it to new compact, you can do it another way. Take a thin magnet, cut it to fit inside compact, then stick the blush pot or whatever to it. I found a 1920’s compact that holds face powder, lipstick and cigarettes. On powder section you can make a screen to hold in lose powder. The cigarette section I put a thin magnet I cut to fit, now I can place one blush pot and a couple eye shadow pots.

Cleaner and safer to mix outside of the vintage makeup compacts and put some parchment paper under the product in the compacts to protect them from any damage.

Very good. I just want to mentions another way of repressing . When you have out all the powder. You can just press the makeup wipe on top of the powder and it will work.

That is Great idea. I love this idea. I didn't know if u could find Vintage compacts and such??? I figured it would be really hard to find anything? I saw a lady one time reuse a lipstick bullet pkging. It was tin and had a little button on the side to raise it up and down. She melted her liosricj and repoured it. It was very cool. I will have to try to find some. I would really like to collect Vintage makeuo pkging. Just figured most was probably too expensive if I did find any.?

Such a great idea! Thank you so much for sharing. I wonder if you have a much smaller pan to start with if it would be possible to still just stick the pan in without even repressing. Probably wouldn't look as nice but still get the joy of using the gorgeous compacts. I have never repressed anything so maybe an easy alternative to start with until I get the courage to break up the product! :)

I love the idea of using reusable compacts if companies did this it would be less wasteful, Im not sure if I would do this, because to do this you still need to buy a product in plastic and then throw it away once in the new compact

Other than the rubbing alcohol, what was the liquid that you dropped into your mixture? It looked like an oil. What does that do? Thanks!

    • @irairod5160
      @irairod5160 5 років тому +2

Hello 40sGlamourGal! I know this answer comes a year late...but I believe she's using Bio-Oil, a very popular concoction heavily market as a deterrent for stretch marks. It adds "slip", and a little sheen, to dried-up powders, especially after one has added alcohol to it. Glycerin, which you can buy at the drugstore much cheaper, will act the same. Either will add creaminess and a buttery feel to powders and help with the binding.

It’s Bio-oil to stop the alcohol from drying out the powders too much.

alcohol.... they use alcohol to clean it (the same alcohol that you are swabbed with before you get an injection to prevent infections...)

I recently learned that Alcohol dries the skin especially if we have dry skin. Using water in with the powders is more sensible and oils even scented is recommended.
