The main problem of hosting your own VPN on a VPS is that most paid services have already permanently blacklisted VPS host company IP address ranges, especially commonly used hosts like Linode and Digital Ocean.
Yep, I haven't tested it myself for a "a few" years, but you might have more luck with the smaller VPS providers, especially the new one's. Of course excluding the ones who might use AWS/Azure/GCP (or other big datacenters) in the background (as in they don't have their own datacenter, but are just renting them aka. being the middleman). AWS IP addresses used to work in N*tflix about 5 years ago, but only some of them worked so you might need to change your assigned (static) public IP address a few times.
@@cheebadigga4092 Hetzer was also blacklisted by Plex a while back. Still awesome though, at half the price of this Vulture one with 20TB of bandwidth per month.
I wouldn't say good job, the intro isn't even getting at the main uses for even having a VPN. And yes privacy is still one of them, using a VPN on an open network such as in an airport is one of the main reasons to have a VPN so your traffic can be encrypted. The second is to access a device on your local network while you are not home. VPNs are not first and foremost to try and use an app in the EU while being in the US or for piracy. Those are stupid reasons to use a VPN. And I wouldn't set up a vpn using a vps, you should run it off a device on your local network.

Given the amount you have to pay for option 2 (vps) you might as well spend that money on something like Proton Unlimited instead and get not only VPN access to many countries with features like split tunneling, but also their Mail service, cloud drive, password manager, etc.
Agreed. Proton in general is a really good deal as long as the use cases are legitimate. Didn't even realize how much I wanted easy to create mail aliases that I can just throw away if the inbox starts getting spammed through one of them before I first tried it a few months ago.
Note that there are much cheaper VPS providers, too. They suggested Vultr because it's easy to set up and use, but with a little more technical know how during initial installation, any other VPS provider also works, for as low as $2-3. And the real advantage imo is having the option of remoting into your home network and hosting (game) servers from your home network, since you essentially get access to a public, static IP address (which is unfortunately less and less common on home internet plans).
Riley's disclaimer should be at the start of every video, along with the addition of him ending by saying, 'and now a word from our sponsor' so that everyone is given the disclaimer and sponsor spot up front and the rest of the video is 'clean' (aside from any lltstore incidental plugs).
At the end of the day the VPN/ server company still needs to connect to their own ISP so ultimately you need to practice good privacy and personal anonymization.
Tbf, most people also still log into their accounts or use a browser with settings to store data. The IP is only important to avoid geoblocking and not having your IP publicly shown. With a selfmade VPN you'll also not have any form of tracker/ad blocking aside of the settings on your own device. Getting actual privacy takes a lot of more effort, so I'm glad that they only did show "well, you change your public IP" instead of what VPN ads did try to sell in the past.
For a Minecraft server, instead of having to fiddle with the ACL, you can actually share out a node to your friends. Not only is it free (no need to pay for extra users), but they actually give you extra devices you can add to your network. Of course, I suggest running the MC server in an isolated node that has nothing but the MC server for security purposes. I typically run it in a Hyper-V VM and lock it down by disabling password logins in ssh.
Ok, but what if my friend and I both get visited by the ubiquiti fairy. Would love to see a version where there is no licensing to purchase, only hardware. Seems like I should be able to set up my own VPN if I have a way to deploy hardware physically in specific regions.
Buy yourself a Minisforum MS-01 with a 13900h, install some router OS, run wireshark vpn. Can hit 10gb speeds. As far as I know only ghetto bell in Ontario and Quebec still uses PPPoe for their fiber internet, the rest is DHCP, so the 10gb transceiver will be like 30$ to go from fiber to sfp. So don’t even need a modem, just the MS-01 directly to the net. Then it’s got another 10gb sfp that if you have more machines/servers you want to connect at that location you can get a 10gb switch, or you can run 2x 10gb connections for 20gbps internets.

If you have a buddy in another country with killer internet they can most likely just setup wireshark vpn directly on their router. It’s a bit trickier to setup compared to OpenVPN but it’s a bit more encrypted as well.
Sorry but self hosting a VPN doesn't really do much for your privacy, if you use a VPS, as the VPS provider still has access to your data. I'd actually trust some VPN providers more, as good ones will never ask you for ANY personal information and accept anonymized payment methods (and are cheaper usually). Also, with a VPS, you don't share the same IP with any other users, making it easier to pin down. That's cool if you just want to watch Netflix, but I am disappointed that this option is praised as increasing your privacy here.
If you have to still pay to make a VPN yourself. It makes sense to just pay for one and you don't have to fiddle with all the setting and trouble that WILL come up over time. The only thing that I think this is good for, is if all VPN companies start giving away your data. Which more than likely will never happen because there will always be people who would not want their data shared. which creates a market for such VPNs.
I use Tailscale on my NAS at home, so I can always internet like I'm at home even when I'm not. It's very useful. Also for remote desktop to any connected computer to my tailscale network.
Yes unless you watch the video. On the WAN show Linus was talking about a full vpn service (like PIA which is an example here) they developed and didn't release, this video is about setting your own private server. So yesn't or no.
Love the idea behind the video, but while I would be fine with it, I don't think I can use this video much to show others 'how to do this' if I want to recommend them anything other than a "tier 1" VPN (which, in The Netherlands, often is not needed because your VPN is just an ISP on top of your ISP, and Dutch net neutrality + ISP security is usually higher than most VPN providers). The simply reason I can't link this video often is basically Jake using a mac as a client. The Windows Market share is still above 70%, in some markets (Europe) it's even higher. To have this video more accessible I think it would've been best to focus on Windows/PC (which is still a core demographic of the LTT watching crowd). Most people here want VPN's to their home, so when in another region in Europe they can still enjoy their sports/TV programs which are country locked (you can imagine Dutch people often going to camping sites in France and wanting to watch F1 over the BBQ). Jake doing the step by step on a mac just... takes a lot out of the video, to make it more accessible. I'm sorry Jake-o, I know you have a preference, and I respect it, but as an explainer it simply is probably not a good thing.
Spend hours converting old pc into a server , inspired by you guys , but couldn't find a work around for port forwarding , until i find tailscale its actually great , but i am mad that you didn't make this video sooner😠
Another simple way to VPN into your home network is to use the VPN built into your home router, my ASUS routers have all had built in OpenVPN and/or WireGuard VPN.

I'm sorry Jake-o, I know you have a preference, and I respect it, but as an explainer it simply is probably not a good thing.
tailscale is just as easy to setup on windows
It’s clearly not Mac specific
A lot of people are gonna be doing "homework" in 4k now
oh wow cant believe they actually went with that thumbnail
Just early enough before such videos will be blocked in the US
Why do I feel like I need a VPN just to watch this video 😂
Thumbnail going nuts fr 💀
I don’t think I’ve ever been this early to an ltt video
6$/month is way more expensive than the vpns that sponsor UA-camrs
finally!! the kind of ltt content i subscribed for!
This tech tip was so quick it should have its own channel for quick tech tips, maybe call it techquickie??? Just an idea LMG
Thats a much better thumbnail
Basically, you gonna need a credit card for any of them, which makes you known to anyone who wants to know
Awww, If only Wendell and Level1Tech had been the sponsor for this one.. Just imagine the perfect intro from Jake there.
I was here before they change the thumbnail 😂
@@Miiscrxant same
@@Proferk what was it
Oh that's crazy, this video tracks with the previous stream.
The thumbnail is crazy
Jake,
I hope your next video gonna be..."Build your own FIREWALL"
Playing the Riley Part at every Family Meeting now
Spend hours converting old pc into a server , inspired by you guys , but couldn't find a work around for port forwarding , until i find tailscale its actually great , but i am mad that you didn't make this video sooner😠
Best ltt thumbnail confirmed?
omgg
3x-ui waayyy better
and as easy as tailscale
Greatly enjoy the tutorials.
Tailscail + Syncthing is the Best combo for sync all data across all my devices
Was here before the title change
I used to set up wireguard everywhere, pita. Now I use UniFi's built in one. So fast and easy.
Hey I did this with ZeroTier! Of course my use case is a little bit different than most...but yes I did this exactly.
Love that the ad was just a ai picture
nah they COOKED with this thumbnail
Another simple way to VPN into your home network is to use the VPN built into your home router, my ASUS routers have all had built in OpenVPN and/or WireGuard VPN.
Love LTT for being corporate but pro consumer
I thought this was going to be a follow up to the wan show. Thought luke was about to get his lambo with vpn money
why do I feel like you would have a crazy kermit impresion?
the description has a typo! "...the question of how to use and setup a VPN is more important than *_every_*, and today..."
2:16 one time Riley is veing serious 🤣🤣😭
DIY VPN seems more expensive than paying for a vpn service.
