  • Peter Knight is a trumpet player, composer and the artistic director of the Australian Art Orchestra. What does he think of Polish jazz? Did the ragtime tunes of Masecki and Rogiewicz appeal to him? Does he know who played in Krzysztof Komeda's quintet?

Some information for those who are not familiar with the detail of Polish history (more precisely: with the dates). “Astigmatic” was cut in the mid-sixties (like some other great recordings of Polish jazz, for instance by Andrzej Trzaskowski). Playing jazz was prohibited by the authorities under Stalin era (though those playing “jazzy” music still were not jailed) which definitely ended in 1956. Not accidentally, in the same year the first jazz festival in Poland materialised (in Sopot). In the sixties jazz concerts were given even in philharmonic halls and jazz was broadcasted in radio and TV. Indeed, very few American jazz stars appeared live in Poland but rather for financial than political reasons.

Really cool! Astigmatic might be the greatest European jazz album ever yet most people haven't even heard of it. Big fan of Polish jazz from India :)
