😲 Blimus, that is some garage! Life goals 😍 How does Bob the Book Dealer source all his stock? Drive around the country to house clearances, that sort of thing? I know of folks that do that for vinyl hauls as I may have used those services a few years ago… I looked up Vinge’s “The Children of the Sky” because I am missing that one, but only the ‘zon list it… for £153. I might have to email your pal 😆 I used to subscribe to Interzone back in the 90’s, but I struggled to keep up. Fun story: I once read one of the Interzone short stories that I particularly enjoyed to a lady friend, and it turned out she liked it too, much to my delight. That worked out well, let’s leave it at that 😘
Bob has a large & very impressive sf collection of his own, his selling started as a way to get shot of surplus books. Now he buys up collections, auctions, that type of thing. Sounds like you had an Interzone result there! Maybe if I whisper some Clifford Simak to my better half I'll get lucky! 😂 thanks for watching 👀!
LOL at "the kiss of death" for The Snow Queen. I have that book on my TBR as well as some Ian McDonald's books. I'm just starting Where Late the Sweet Birds Sang. I'll have to look out for Juniper Time. And glad to see a Karl Schroeder get a mention. I loved Permanence and enjoyed Lockstep, but haven't read Ventus.
Loved Downbelow Station, by C.J. Cherryh - it is one of the first books that comes to mind, when I think of David Pringle's 100 Best SF/1949-1984, in the sense that I would happily yank out something like Michaelmas by Budrys (but not Rogue Moon, which I loved!), or even Nova Express by Burroughs, and substitute Downbelow Station. Sadly, while I might be caught doing that, I would just as easily pull Cyteen out of the 101 Best SF/1985-2010, and replace it with almost anything else. But that's just me. It was surprising when I was thoroughly bored by Cyteen, after having loved Downbelow Station. But this happens sometimes, going down the book to book trail with an author. Steal Across the Sky remains one of the hidden gems/surprise inclusions from the 1985-2010 'Best' List, and I am glad you have it within easy reach. I did fall for that cover's strangness, and then fell even harder for Kress's even odder premise. Great haul, thanks for showing!
Also, I have that Keith Roberts "Molly Zero" Nice cover. I've got a mid 1990s version of "Endymion" but I haven't read "Hyperion" so I must read that first!
Earlier this year I bought a few books from Bob. I'm too far to visit, but his postal rates are very fair- so I'll hopefully be buying more another time. I should also say that his books,- I bought paperbacks - are in really good condition.
Read Downbelow Station years ago. I liked the way it shifts perspectives from character to character. Very well done. My copy is the exact same as yours, btw. Love those 70s-80s covers... Jon, aren't hardcovers usually a lot more expensive than paperbacks? They also take up more space on your shelves, and are clumsier to read, imo.
Yes, yes, but no. I like the heft of a hardback, they seem like a more serious product to me, more permanent. But I readily concede space is an issue! Cheers Luiz, thanks for watching 👀!
Something I keep forgetting to ask you, Jon. About a year ago, I first encountered the convention in British books of using single quote marks for dialogues. Somehow, it seems, previous to that book, I've never read a UK edition of ANYTHING! 😳🤯. Which sounds absurd, but I quite assure you, given the wealth of books available in the US, it could happen. Freaked me out, it did. 😮 Now I'm curious as to your reaction upon reading the double quote marks, standard for US books for the first time. Did it throw you for a loop? Make you question if there's an error with the printers as I did? 😉😛 I know, I should have known better, and my extreme reaction was probably unjustified. But it threw me for a loop, it did. 🐶
@@SciFiScavenger Welcome to the club! This is why I've not been to Bob's since the summer- to be fair, though, I'm not collecting currently due to lack of space and the need to audit my stash and Bob's prices are, quite frankly, even for the super-rare stuff, very reasonable. And of course he's a lovely bloke, as you will have discovered!
Whoever once said "Never judge a book by it's cover", has no idea how much extra you can get from it to add to your enjoyment of the story. a terrible cover on a good book lessens the enjoyment of it for me. Your new copy of Vast by Nagata wants me to read it. it it wasn't for this, neither of us would have 2 feet of bookshelves filled with just John Wyndham PB's. In your Library tour, you said about having multiple copies of the same book, "That way lies madness", then proceeded to justify having multiple copies of some books. Welcome to the Asylum, you're in good company. Andy
I have been evicting duplicates from my library, Wyndham (and it seems Simak) are the exception. Spotted two duplicate Heinleins today tho, they're for the chop. Cheers Andy, thanks for watching 👀!
Pleased to see you got a decent haul there. Bob's stock is top notch.👍
Hey Jules, it sure is, and I got a cheeky tour of his own shelves as well which are superb. Thanks for watching 👀!

O.m.g…. I want to go to bob’s garage!!!! What a wonderful place!
It really is. Saving my pennies for a repeat visit! Thanks for watching 👀!
Looks like the Criterion Closet! :D .... and every bit as wondrous ....
It does! I could easily have spent hours and hours there, and waaaay more cash. Thanks for watching 👀!

Enjoy seeing the Cover art... another great video.
Hi Michael, great, glad you enjoyed it. Plenty of fabulous cover art in the next haul video too! Thanks for watching 👀!

You're gonna love the next haul video, an absolute avalanche of vintage and list-based frenzy purchasing. Cheers Seth, thanks for watching 👀!

I found a fab copy of Pavane the other day, uk 1st printing in pb, trumping the galley proof by some margin.
So nice to see someone else enjoys hardbacks, I've run into a surprising amount of people who've taken a dislike to them.
I love em. But they do take up a lot of space!!
I read the book Ventus. It was a good story for sure and quite different from other sci-fi that I have read
Excellent, good to know, thanks Robert, and thanks for watching 👀!

Yes that was my main takeaway, the condition of his stock is next level. Cheers David, thanks for watching 👀!
Snow Queen was one of the best books i read this year.
Oh good, that's encouraging. One to find its way onto my shortish term tbr then. Thanks for watching 👀!
Downbeliw station is a great place to start with Cherryh. I really need to give it a reread as its been decades.
Great, looking forward to it. Cheers Mark, thanks for watching 👀!
Not that familiar with many of those titles but it seems Bob did you proud. You had a good day!
I did, I didn't mention it but Bob also gave me.a tour round his personal collection which is quite something. Thanks for watching 👀!

Access to the garage of doom! You will never be the same again!
I'm certainly a lot lighter in the cash dept!

@@SciFiScavenger I will keep an eye on your Ebay, maybe I don't have one of those Heinlein covers....
How many great books have I passed on because of bad covers - too many!
