  • Last part of building our new chicken coop, hen house. How to cut rafters for a lean-to style roof, adding the metal roofing and hardware cloth for walls. Predator apron and Finishing details. We get our little chicks moved into their new home! Some cuteness overload as they try out their tiny wings in their new larger space!

    • @natureartgirl
      @natureartgirl  Рік тому

      We don’t have any plans, but it should be fairly easy to build just by watching the videos. You could easily change the size to whatever you need. On ours, the front is 8’ tall and the back is 6’8”. That gives you about a 2 pitch roof. We used 2x4”s 10’ long for the roof. Used one roll of 4’ x 100’ hardware cloth with 1/2” mesh that is coated with black. That was enough for the main structure and part of the predator apron around the bottom, but had to use a little more 2’ wide wire to finish the predator apron. Hope this helps!

      We put a wire predator apron around the bottom. It is stapled to the base and extends out about 2 feet all around. Then it was covered with dirt. You can see it in the video toward the end. But yes, if you don’t have that, a predator could easily dig underneath. 😊👍

    Excellent job! You are right it is hard to find a good stain.. My favorite used to be the old Flood Oil based semi-transparent before they got bought out.. That was the longest lasting stain I ever used.. Painter of 20 plus years..
    I like Pure tung oil too :) Natural non toxic, did it on my White oak quarter and rift sawn floors about 3 years ago and haven't even had to touch it up yet. Just slow drying.. But you can do it in sections and it blends in well.

    • @natureartgirl
      @natureartgirl  8 місяців тому

      Yes we just used some high density black packing foam that came with one of our e-bikes. It’s not really necessary, just helps keep their feet warm and makes it a little easier to clean if it needs it. Those lock together foam pads to stand on would also work. Just be sure not to use anything that they can easily pick at and choke on. Hope you have fun building yours!😊👍👍

    Can I ask where you got your Sapphire Gems? We are currently in the process of building our coop and I am very interested in the Sapphire Gems. We live in Melbourne, AR. We would really like to find a hatchery that we can drive to and pick our up our chicks vs shipping.

    • @natureartgirl
      @natureartgirl  6 місяців тому

      We ordered ours from Hoovers hatchery. I think you may be able to special order them from tractor supply also. But I don’t know any local source that actually raise them here. They are a cross breed, so even if you get a rooster, I don’t think they breed true. I am not positive about that, but there is a lot of info online too. Hoovers does refund for any lost in shipping, but it is still sad. 😕Hope you have success, we are loving ours! They are very friendly, good foragers, and lay an incredible amount of eggs! We have been getting 12 to 14 per day this spring with 14 hens! 😊

    Beautiful coop. So how are you going to take care of closing the coop in during winter time. Just wondering 😉

    • @natureartgirl
      @natureartgirl  Рік тому

      We haven’t decided for sure. You still have to have ventilation even in winter, so we will leave the window above the nest boxes as is and the one opposite it inside the run. But I think we are going to make a removable inset to block off the two side windows so there is not too much wind on them. It doesn’t get very cold here, so they would be ok without it, but they would probably be more comfortable with it covered. If you live where it is very cold, you might have to do something different. 😊👍👍

      They are cut on 45 degree angle. The length will vary depending on how you build your coop. I just cut one angle and hold it up even where it will fit and then mark it. Cut it and check the fit. Then before you nail it in, use it as a pattern to mark all the others. It goes pretty fast. 😊

    • @natureartgirl
      @natureartgirl  Рік тому +1

      We used the natural base 01. The color mellows out quite a bit when it dries in a few days. It took quite a bit since we had rough cut wood. If you use purchased wood, it probably wouldn’t take quite as much since it is smoother. About 3 gallons. That was one of the major expenses of the build. Be sure and stain it before you put the wire hardware cloth up and it will be much easier! 😊

      Yes, it is from a list of music UA-cam provides. You have to pay royalties for any music you use unless you get permission from the artist.

    What brand stain did you use? Does it keep bore bees away? Love your coop? What state are you in?

    • @natureartgirl
      @natureartgirl  Рік тому +1

      We used Outlast Q8 log oil. It is a wood preservative as well as a stain. It is really nice to use because it soaks into the wood and doesn’t leave lap marks. You do need to have about 3 days of no rain because it takes a while to dry. We added a essential oil bug repellent that is made to go with the stain. In helps to repel the bore bees but probably not 100%. You can order the stain and repellent at westernloghomesupply.com. It also has boric acid in it so it kills bugs that eat wood. 😊💕

    What are dimensions of coop?

    • @natureartgirl
      @natureartgirl  5 місяців тому

      It is approximately 8 feet wide and 18 feet long. It would be just as easy to make it 20feet long but that would not fit our space. We used 10 foot boards for the rafters so there is an overhang on both sides.

    What breed is this chicken?

    • @natureartgirl
      @natureartgirl  6 місяців тому +1

      It’s a crossbreed called sapphire gem. They are fairly new, so that is why we had to mail order them. The black ones are black australorps. They are both super good layers and smart enough to free range successfully. The black ones seem to be slightly more bossy and dominant. But they get along well together. Since the spring daylight hours are getting longer we are getting 11 to 14 eggs every day from 14 hens. We are super happy with them. 😊👍👍

    Good job on the coop! 👏❤...when i was growing up my grandma raised chickens in her backyard in Malaysia and we had tons of snakes too. She raised a pair of geese in the next fence and that kept the snakes away...snakes don't like goose. Maybe its something you can try. I grew up helping my grandma raise the chicks/chickens so watching your video hits a soft spot in me. It was my job to feed them and collect the eggs.

      Thanks! That’s interesting about the goose keeping snakes away. We have a lot of water snakes in our koi ponds but they are not poisonous. I know they eat eggs and baby birds though, because we have seen them in our bird houses! Nice memories of your grandma! It’s funny how some things really bring back good memories 😊💕

      Thanks! We got 9 sapphire gem chicks (the gray ones) and 5 black australorp chicks. The black ones are supposed to be good for free ranging. Hawks think they are crows so they should leave them alone. Hope it works!😊👍
