I like a chunky boot myself, but even with barefoot boots the answer to "having unsupported ankles" is getting stronger ankles. Just get stronger, or better at something. Is the answer to most things. Do it/use them and your wonderfully advanced human body will adapt.

    • @user-yv8kd2jo2x
      @user-yv8kd2jo2x 3 місяці тому +5

@liquidusblue it doesn't matter how strong your ankles are. With chunky boots because of the step you will roll your ankles . That doesn't happen with bare foot boots.

You are not wrong there at all Bjorn. A couple of years back I used toe separating barefoot shoes and my feet spread, the skin toughened and it was OK for me. Pack carrying I still prefer a stout ankle boot for load carrying.
Sadly 8 years back I had (read not suffered) a stroke! Bed ridden for months, couldn't walk properly for a couple of years. I am now on the mend despite my challenges. So once again I will be hiking distance and enjoying nights under the stars.
I take on small challenges every day to move in that direction.
First fix the mind so you have no more problems _ people face problems. Instead have challenges and rise to them. Work on those challenges with your body and before long, you have risen to them all!
Waste not one iota of thought on any negative connotation. It takes practice but the rewards are endless!

I could not agree more! I bought some cheap barefoot shoes from Amazon 2 years ago and I’ll never go back. I was born with bad feet (totally flat foot) and I had corrective surgery on my right foot. I’ve spent BIG money on shoes, insoles etc, and here all I needed was to go barefoot. I can walk 8 hours on a tiled floor, then work my second job on a steel deck, and my feet are just fine. Again this is in the cheap stuff.

I've never tried the barefoot boots before but like the concept. Back in the 70's when I did the AT for the first time I wore knee high lace up moccasins that had a fairly thick but very pliable gum rubber sole and they worked out GREAT even though I went through 2 pairs, almost 3 . Later when I worked with the Forest Service I wore them for many more years when doing day patrols on the AT and in the Lincoln Woods Wilderness Area in NH , USA. My daily foot ware is moccasins still , just low ones and I live way up in the mountains on > 20 acres and do all my homestead chores and roam all over my wood lot wearing them , best thing ever !
I did have to switch to a much heavier boot in the 80's - early 2000's when I ended up staying out on the trail for 2 to 3 weeks at a time and had to carry a much bigger pack , more supply's , along with a radio, major first aid/ trauma kit and a minimal climbing gear set up for the frequent rescues I ran into. One particular back country area I patrolled was also a popular climbing and swimming areas with big waterfalls that people were constantly getting hurt at. Two or three emergency responses a day sometimes wasn't uncommon and in many cases they were miles apart.
I know you'll choke , but the best I could do while on duty and during my long distance patrols was 63 lbs for a pack weight, for 3 week stints , add another 7-8 lbs . When hiking for fun though a 3-4 day pack is well less than 20 lbs even carrying "luxury items" like a tent and Therma- rest. Otherwise a hammock and rain fly has been and still is my go to for the AT and back country trips sense the 60's . Had to give it all up after a serious fall in 2006 that put me out of commission permanently , at least for hiking with a pack .

I wear barefoot shoes around 6 years I think and here are my observations:
My back doesnt hurt anymore, and if does, it gets ok very quickly. And I used to have chronic pain. There were more things I did to get rid of that, but this is big contribution.
I am more consious about my every step and avoiding to put to much weight on my heel. And that is what I think does the trick. When you walk complete barefoot, that is what you do, because you know it hurts when you put pressure to the heel.
Also, I have more confidence to walk distances. I dont have any blisters from them.
I wouldn't recomend wearing barefoot shoes for some sports and heavy duty jobs where you need protection.
Also, non-barefoot shoes can give you more safety and support, and that can save you a lot of energy while on long and hard tracks, so keep that in mind.
When I had my first pair - the brand was Wildlings, I completely fall in love with them. From than, I only had one period of non-barefoot shoes and it was really bad. I was happy when I finaly outwear them and threw them away. My second shoes were Xero sandals, and those were great, I gave them literal hell, from spring to autumn and they lasted three years. I also had Xero tracking shoes and they didn't last a year and also gave me blisters. Now I have two Czech brands - Realfoot with super wide space for fingers and Saltic - they seems great for heavy duty (originaly climbers shoes).
So yeas go barefoot, but watch what it does for you. My mother in law whent barefoot at her 50ties and hew arch went flat and it was really painfull.

You are so right ! I started wearing barefoot shoes a few months back and i have noticed a big difference. I had slight knee and hip pain while backpacking that has slowly went away since wearing them. I carry a heavy pack usually as well. Now my feet hurt and the pain will slowly come back if i wear my regular boots. My toes are bunched up and my arches start to ache. Put my Barefoot back on and all that pain goes away. I need to find more of a boot style in the barefoot now as the pair i have is more like a modern-day moccasin 😅. But even with a heavy pack i would rather wear them than my other boots. Zero drop heels and very wide toe box is a must.

So, I recently got into getting more barefoot for my feet health as well. Most of my life I wore steel toed shoes due to my job and most of them just felt uncomfortable to wear and even in childhood it was hard to find a pair of shoes that fit me well. Luckily I found a brand whose shoes were build broader than the majority of the other shoes.
Now I am slowly transitioning more to barefoot shoes and I find them quite comfortable, at first I was not used to the feeling but that changed quickly... well that maybe is, because I mostly walked barefoot at home anyways. I even got myself socks with individual toes (like gloves but for your feet) as at home my feet get cold very quickly due to the cold floor but still being able to have the barefoot feeling as with usual socks it's like wearing mittens ant the toes feel trapped.
Anyways, so far I've got barely any downsides to barefoot shoes, other than driving a car with them is very uncomfortable, but other than that, I've got none.

Spot On! The benefit to your health, physically and mentally, from walking barefoot or wearing barefoot shoes are enormous. Which seems very logic to me, our feet are our bases and grounding. It keeps you connected with Mother Earth as with the elements we have to deal with in daily life. The information that comes through your feet is essential to be totally aware in the moment.
The shoe industry knows this as well. And look what ‘sick shoes’ they brought to the market and to the people.

Two plus years now barefoot, no more knee problems and posture much better. Do not intend to ever go back to "regular" shoes.

fantastic boots, fantastic company, your whole body benefits because you can feel the ground better, you feel more connected and also your muscle groups respond to the ground accordingly. If you wear thick bouncy soles, then your body is being tricked (for want of better words)and then will not workor react as nature intended. I find that I walk more confidently in mine, it's difficult to explain, but something does happen, Thank you Bjorn,

I use barefoot shoes for years almost exclusivly. Sneakers & boots, summer or winter. In the winter I put sheep wool inserts inside.

I've worn zero-drop for about the last two years, but don't feel ready to go completely barefoot shoes - sensitive feet, and bruise the sole of my heel too easily still. When it comes to ankle health, though .. thick ankles and ~30yrs of badminton at a competitive level - I don't remember injuring an ankle since I was a kid.

When we were little, we used to play/walk barefoot all day. By the way, I like your shoes and rubber sole, they seem to be very comfortable and durable. Peace and stay free 🖖🌿🍂🔥

Very important video. I have a seriously painful ankle problem going on and so far they can't figure out what is causing it. I have been looking into barefoot shoes on and off for a week now, considering them but also thinking they are a bit on the expensive side. I have already "wasted" €200 on custom made podotherapy soles which seem to have made things worse. I didn't want to fall for another marketing scam. But I also know the points you're making only make sense. I think I'm just gonna go for it and try this out. It is my health and anything is better than the pain I'm now dealing with

I was looking at those boots in your other videos, nw I know I saw it correctly, they are barefoot. I used barefoot shoes for 4 years now and I can't use "normal" shoes anymore. The Zero drop correct posture and "normal" shoes give me back pain and hurt my knees.

I agree however as a runner on hard rocky ground I had to ditch the minimalist shoes and go back to regular cushioned running shoes to save the bottom of my feet which were starting to hurt for months on end.

Nice , I have only been barefoot for 3 years and at 64 I can run on rocks , gravel, broken glass. I can just imagine how bullet proof your soles must be after that long

I`ve been walking in "Barefoot"-shoes for about 7 years now. I cant walk in normal shoes anymore because my knees start to hurt after a while! Long distance walks are also absolutely possible IF your feet are used to them. I did a 30 Kilometer hike 2 months ago and would do it again anytime! Its feels so much better!

I wear the same vivo boots almost every day and it's the best pair of boots I've ever owned! I'm so happy with them that I've already bought another pair, despite not needing it yet lol. By the looks of it I probably won't need the new pair for a while...

    Love going barefoot whenever possible!
Been wearing the same pair of NB minimus for ...6...7 years?
They just gave up the ghost a week ago, tried to repair, but no luck.
Now I'm completely barefoot until I can find a new shoe I like lol

Yep! Barefoot shoes (always make me laugh) are awesome. I’ve been wearing them for about 6 years.
My balance, squatting - in the gym and general day to day has improved massively. Walking is easier, no more shin splints.
The only downside is standing on a small stone or something can be momentarily unpleasant but man up me haha! Ow and they can be expensive but the benefit outweighs the cost.

Spent 20 years so far in minimalist shoes -boots.. I would suggest you look in to the issues that can result from transition from regular shoes to minimalist shoes.. some perhaps most will have to transition over a long periods of time and train in them because it will change how you move and it's not with out the risk of serious injury (s) or niggling ones like plantar fasciitis.

I’ve been wearing barefoot shoes for a few years and I love them. You didn’t mention the brand of your hiking boots. I’m looking for some that are wide, warm and waterproof.

Totaly agree, I had knee pain in my right kneefor a year and was recommended insoles, so I used insoles for a couple years but I was kinda frustrated that they wear out quite quickly compared to their price.
by pure accident I bought some barefoot shoes, and since then I dont use insoles nor do I have knee pain anymore, and it has been one year so far.

I have these boots! I've been 'barefoot' for about 15 years :) I walk everywhere it vivobarefoot or Xero shoes and I run short and long distances in Altra trainers. I've never had a running injury after I switched to barefoot :)
