    40 years ago when I was new to farming and had been given 6 piglets my neighbour came over for a chat and we decided to go shoot a few rabbits. He suggested I let the pigs out to come with us. I was very sceptical to say the least. To my utter amazement they followed us for an hour before becoming sidetracked by a dam with a muddy verge. Again I was sceptical but the neighbour assured me they would stay there, they did. When we were returning the pigs fell into line and followed us home and seemed very happy having had a mud bath on a hot evening. From then on I let them out regularly and they were very fast at finding their way home, even when I avoided them they came home for dinner. When I was going to butcher one the same neighbour told me not to do it where the others could see or hear because they would know what I had done and would be vengeful. I had the pigs housed in the kill yard so he said ‘no problem, I’ll show you how I do it’. He returned shortly after with 20lt of home brewed alcohol which he added to their food. The pigs were hungry because I hadn’t fed them for about 40 hours as was advised to make the gutting process easier. They all ate and became very drunk and fell asleep. We easily dispatched two and cleaned up the yard. The following day the remaining pigs were clearly hung over and obviously confused about their missing mates but they had no clue what had happened. The neighbour told me he had once killed a piglet where the sow was close by and she nearly killed him next time he was in the yard.

    Had a neighbor in Iowa fell out of a silo right into his hog pen. Nobody else was around. They didn’t kill him but they did a lot of damage, serious damage, and he was unconscious. I’m not sure how and when someone found him. He spent a lot of time in the hospital and he had damage of all kinds for the rest of his life, the whole community brought his crops in to help his wife. I will never forget that story.

    Jack, I'm almost going into my latter portion of 2nd year owning kune-kune pigs and I've had 3 escapes but fortunately, since the pigs knew I was the food guy, they followed the Pied Piper back to their penned area. Another thing is when they're young and still skittish, don't make quick lunging moves b/c it seems to reconfirm their reason to fear humans, therefore, slow moderate movements around skittish young piglets or new animals is easier on you and the animal relationship. I'm like you about not totally trusting the pigs. Our boar gets ticked when he can't eat when he wants to eat and therefor picks on his pen-mate. He'll also ram a large barrel that I have strapped inside the pen. That barrel is being removed to outside the pen when I relocate the pigs to their new paddock. Great video. Thanks for the info. I had already lived through what you discussed but it's kind of reassuring to hear from other small homesteads that raise their own pork. Have a fine week. 👍🏽🤠 9/27/22

    Do you know if coyotes bother pigs? Maybe just when they are smaller? Or would the electric fence keep them out also?

    • @TheMindfulHomestead
      @TheMindfulHomestead  2 роки тому +2

      They CAN bother pigs, but it's pretty rare for them to do so. It's never been an issue for us. We did have a bear problem earlier this year, but we managed to scare him off. ua-cam.com/video/QJh5LFqwawY/v-deo.html

    But I've seen a lot of people not realize how much it costs to raise pigs.

      Guinea pigs might be a good choice, but the bacon will be really small and you need about twenty for a good meal.

      @@williewonka6694 true, but we're looking more for sausage. Like I said, it's just the two of us, so we don't need much. Plus, they are a lard pig and we really wanted the extra lard to add to the sausage, deer sausage, and for cooking rabbits and other lean animals. We did end up getting them and actually just had piglets (that's our next video coming in Friday). We're thrilled!

    Just had a question. I'm not a vegetarian by any means. I eat what I hunt moose, deer, partridge, wild turkey. I know pig meet has good protein but is the highest in LDL cholesterol which is the number one killer in Americans and Canadiens. Plaque in the arteries, stroke, heart attack etc. My doctor and most doctors say stay away from pork it will increase your life span. Which has been clinically proven in many studies. HDL the healthy cholesterol is what your looking for example from fish, nuts, avocado, olive oil, chicken without the skin, duck etc. Keeps the mind sharp and lowers the risk of heart disease, Alzheimer's, fatty liver, leaky gut etc... I learnt alot from your tractor videos though. Thanks mate 👍

    • @TheMindfulHomestead
      @TheMindfulHomestead  2 роки тому +1

      Having a higher rate of LDL in food doesn’t correspond to high LDL in the person eating the food. Most LDL is generated by the body to store energy from carbohydrates. Since shifting to eating a lot of pork a few years back and getting off store bought meat in general, my LDL levels have gone from an already acceptable level even lower. Of course I made other food choices at the same time, but I certainly didn’t decrease my pork consumption.

    We had an Hampshire Boar 🐗 when I was a in jr. High got home one afternoon and he was about to root out of the pen. He had it loose and I went to grab some staples and hammer I got in the pen to reattach the fencing. As I had my back to him and bent over he came up behind me and put his mouth around my right calf. I took the hammer and turned it around claw facing his snout swung catching his snout and skinning his nose he ran back. Years ago my brother went to the salebarn my grandfather owned and was just about5 years old. Someone had brought in a sow with nursing piglets and he crawled over the fence. The sow started after him and a neighbor Mr. Amos Chambers reached over and grabbed him by his overalls and pulled him out. He only wanted to get closer to the piggies. They are cute but very dangerous animals
