    Take your time with the video. It is always preferable for you to avoid crashes rather than to press to complete more video projects. In the end, you will remain more productive and more engaged to the extent your health holds. As I am sure you know already, recovering from serious ME crashes and complications always takes longer than forgoing choices to extend ourselves to complete projects we hope to finish or to participate in events we know may be too much at a given time. Our interest level encourages us to roll the dice, and we find ourselves paying for the choice for weeks or months. This note is less about information than encouragement to be careful. We will wait if you will, so please do prioritize your health. We'll happily welcome your videos and other posts when they appear.

    How should we address the subject of whether living under a dictatorship - and, particularly, under a “hereditary” dictatorship - by itself legitimizes carrying out actions of subversion or sabotage against the state? I often read the argument that going against the law is always wrong, regardless. But why should people who have no say in the process of generating that law, even in deciding who to delegate that job to, feel obliged to comply?

    • @zlauriault
      @zlauriault 11 днів тому +4

      The concept of law and order is tied to moral and ethic codes. When disobeying tyranny, the consequences are real, but a good reason is the laws transgress basic moral and ethical principles.
      As for the Nazis, a classic example, disobeying a Nazi order led to painful consequences, but people disobeyed on moral and ethical grounds, knowing there is always a choice.
      I think it's Lincoln that commented on how Russia is openly evil and tyrannical without the "base alloy of hypocrisy." It's everyone else who needs to acknowledge this and stop pretending Russia will suddenly become angelic. The people there have to collectively want to change. Putin does his best to suppress that and anyone else coming forward who could be a viable replacement.

    • @silvasdamata
      @silvasdamata 11 днів тому +1

      @@zlauriaultThank you. As someone who isn't trained in these subjects, it feels like trying to navigate between Scylla and Charybdis, trying to avoid moral relativism, but not having the argument base to sustain a universalist perspective against claims such as that human rights are a western, liberal conception and respond to western, liberal moral concerns, lacking applicability to other cultures that focus on different aspects of morality.

But in order to keep that control over the people, he controls the entirety of the media in Russia and Russians are exposed 24/7 to his eschewed version of reality. The ROC is probably the only organized "religious" body on the planet that openly advocates for war, calling the SMO a 'Holy War'. Russian people can be arrested, in their country, for voicing the 'wrong' opinion. Is it not sensible to state that in a dictatorship, you can't have popular legitimacy, even if the people believe in the dictator, when their belief is based on a lie?

    We greatly value your presentations. Being 79 and from the entertainment industry, I grew up under the influence of great artists, Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis Junior etc (masters of stage presence). They would tell you that a mic pointing into one's mouth is a camp image, perfect for David Bowie etc. But it symbolically diminishes the value of intellectual discourse. May I suggest a boundary mic, unseen on the table. A boundary mic better captures the raw realism of a voice, resulting in greater impact on discourse. All auditory artists experience how their voice actually sounds, as being uncomfortable at first, but you will get used to it.

    Your comments about passing on power to the next generation are interesting, especially regarding Mr. Putin passing on his political power to his daughter. If Mr. Putin passes political power and leadership on to his daughter it would be only the second time in Russian history that the ruler passed his political power and leadership to a female family member (the first being Peter the Great passing on his role as Emperor to the Empress Catherine I, his wife). If we assume that Russia is generally a patriarchal society, one wonders what would play in terms of Russian domestic politics.
    Also, passing political power to relatives would break with the post-Revolution norm of not having family members inherit political leadership.

    By the way i really liked one of yr casual comments that wealth property and political power are the same thing.
    That thought would help people understand our own history and politics too. When we transitioned from the mixed some what oligarchic 1688 constitutional settlement to democracy in stages with the Great Reform bill 1832 ( there are democratic elements in that old mixture and even still older mideaval constitions ) the dominant power the house of lords was composed of the two wealthiest ( and intermarried groups ) the bankers and the great landed magnates . They had to be persuaded that wealth could survive with out overwhelming political power. That wasnt easy. It took the goodwill of George tbe fourth , money for his palaces and teacups to force the royal Dukes to vote for reform , it took control of the Church and the Bishop peers being forced to vote with the government. It took Arthur Wellington who had conquered Spain and seen a civil war based on new liberalism to persuade them.
    But one can presume too much on the docility and tractability of the rich. We are often saved by the vitality and variety of our economy the rise and fall and diversity of great fortunes. So we dont deal with a monolith. If i want to fight science denying resource money in Calgary i can beg helo from a tech lord in Vancouver .Democracy can work despite great discrepancy in wealth and informal power, and it does.
    But the left should still be ware of poking the bear , needlessly enraging propertied classes. Niether should the state be a cheer leader or minion for the rich. It has to discipline and control them. But id beware of assuming the state has a right or interest in destroying large fortunes or equalizing incomes. One should try to persuade property classes to pay taxes. This takes goodwill. If one has property , competently managed for generations one can pay for medical care and schools with out help from the state. One has to try to make an argument that good public services benefit the whole economy and mitary strength in a way that benefits all citizens. And money can be whistled away to Singapore etc. Theres a limit to the power of the left to level and rob.
    But its deeply uncomfortable to rely on socialist parties rooted in what i think are hostile traditions. If you tax away capital not just income people will be enraged , you ll loose their loyalty to the state. And propertied people can and have backed reform and democracy. With finesse they still might.

    Vlad, I know you know this already - but it’s worth repeating all the same; please don’t EVER feel the need to apologise, or even explain why content is taking longer than you’d like, or will be delayed. Especially when it’s content you produce so brilliantly, and with such spirit of generosity and a desire to share your knowledge so openly and freely, for the public good.
    Yes I know you’re probably just being polite, or managing expectations (which is appreciated), but I do hope you NEVER feel under pressure to keep up the pace, or God forbid in order to satisfy the demands of UA-cam’s moronic and unreasonable algorithms - ok, that last part is a joke in your case, but I see too many content creators succumb to that and even burn out - and it’s so wrong, it should be publicly denounced by those that can 😉
    I suffer with different, but serious health problems myself and, even after 11 years of putting up with this shit, I still find that the worst part of it all is, not the physical pain and symptoms, or coping with the sense of ‘loss’ it has caused, but (rather surprisingly) it is how the weight of responsibility makes me feel from the impact my health has on others, and stress caused from putting yourself under too much pressure, to do stuff when you’re just not up to it. Of course those feelings are 100x worse when you already feel rubbish with your symptoms 🤣 So, please be kind to yourself ❤️ and don’t ever do this (if you can help it). We’re just grateful for whatever you can share … however much that is, and whenever it’s available 🙌

    One of the stories we all once learned and taught in school was the story of Black Prince in his precious black steel army at Crecy one of the battles of our nation like Agincourt.
    His father Edward the third one of our greatest kings was on a hill with his generals watching the battle. They saw that the Prince of Wales and his friend had run into serious difficulty. A general asked the king if they should send in reserve troops to rescue him. King Edward in one of the greatestest sentences in the English language said " let him win his spurs".
    Young people need responsibility risk , the challenge of friends who are equals. Only fools like President Biden over protect their children. Leaders need to be adult to niether fawn nor bully. And the conventions for raising hiers attempted to ensure independence and interaction between young men as peers , equals with out tyrannical hover parents. In fact the namby pamby baby stuff of the liberals is part of what drives sensible people to the right.

    I have nothing directly related to add, but still want to feed the algorithm's engagement metrics, so here I go with something unrelated. I think my previous statement of this was buried in a late addition to a long comment section.
    The word "evil" is used differently by different people in different contexts. I think it's useful to distinguish motivations that are evil from those that are caused merely by misinformation or misunderstanding. But when doing so, it's important to frame evil as a set of tendencies that all people have, not as a categorization of people. I don't think it even make senses to describe specific people as evil, given that the tendencies are present in all of us.

      Socrates allegedly said that evil comes from ignorance. So yeah there's a whole can of worms in defining 'evil'.

    Elites are important even in liberal democracies. Equality can only be legal and formal. Wealth will give influence , wealth and political power will remain interrelated .
    And you cant just ride against resources lords in Calgary and Houston like Greta Thunberg or Don Quixote. You need strategy. You also cant do leveling in the name of social justice or Trudeauian liberal guilt and moonshine.
    One has to restrict the oportunities for corruption and criminality in making fortunes. And enrepreneurs self made people very far from being noble and useful are far more than average likely to be psycopaths and rule breakers. And all will tend to be short sighted not think a hundred years ahead and see how the private fortune is connected to the success of its principal domicile.
    The old rich surrendered complete control because of fear of liberal revolution and hope that survival might be possible under the new post 1832 constitution. Was it a false hope ? Was democracy a failure was it bad for Britains bad foreign policy by the 1850s and two catastropic wars WWOne and Two that resulted ?
    Thats not an answerable question . But the labour party is yet again attacking the least toxic and most responsible part and its a tiny part of the elite by demanding the removal of hereditary peers and mandatory retirement of lords at 80. The attack on this type of wealth has been demented and it tends to be long term oriented and have some element of conscience and social propriety. All sort of changes bad changes have forced it to act like conventional real estate companies with short term orientation and no freedom for attention to conservation and local identities.
    Tony Blair in the last labour sweep and others before him did damage great damage by limiting the powers of the monarchy which are much less in Britain than Canada , oh yes. A Governor General makes his own honors list not the Prime Minister. In both countries a Prime Minister NEVER should have been allowed to leave country with out permission of the Governor General or the King. The appointment of peers and the Prime Minister belonged to the King. Democracy all this cant did not improve the constitution in these regards. A GG still chooses the PM in a hung election. But the changes arent good a lot of them arent good. And a society that extols quasi criminal business men , shirt termism that extolls Ayn Rand and libertarianism over cohesive social values will not be successful. We should beware of US evolving to be like the Russian.
    But if Putin thinks the oligarchs can produce hiers as responsible and moral as our old discarded aristocracy was or even the old Russian aristocracy disrastefull and silly as it was he is a fool. But i suspect he sees himself as Ivan the Fourth with his loyal Boyars and service gentry around him. Hes a transient mafia chieftain or some one like the horrible gangs who evolved from Irish Nationslist Terrorists. Mean while we hunt and tax decent people into extinction.

    I hope can come back to the question of succession in Russia as this process is also under way in the US as baby boomers (like me!) retire and see the country increasingly run by trust fund babies.
