Yeah, I need to EQ everything and it’s AWESOME that firmware upgrades have given the Qudelix 5K 20 bands or two separate 10 band parametric or graphic equalizers(one for each ear). This is great for me because my left and right ears need to be equalized differently to achieve decent imaging.

I understand about the 3k dip, but maybe Sennheiser thinks that the loudness equalization makes the whole sound flatter and more linear by reducing this area when listening to the sound at low volumes. Personally, I actually feel like there is a dip when I listen to the 660S2, but that could just be because I usually listen to the HD 600 and my brain is tuned to it. I would like to hear your thoughts on this point.
I have had the 600 S2 since yesterday: 6 hours of listening time in and I am really enjoying them. I pre-o ordered and once the reviews started rolling in I was concerned that I made a mistake paying a premium price for something new etc. I prefer these over the 650 that I have had for 2 years+. Back ground instruments come from behind me (my ears) much more so than the 650. Mids. still sound great, perhaps not as pronounced but I am hearing all of the other instruments more and to me that is more enjoyable. Other headphones I own, LCD-x, 650, Sundara, and Elegia.. I have a simple setup power wise: Asgard Multi-bit, and M11 Pro ESS DAP, plus few ultra-portable dongles..
@@turtlet7201 I had the Sundara's and sadly something inside the right speaker grounded out or whatever, because it blew my fucking amp. The right ear died. And then I plugged them into a typical computer sound card and they blew my soundcard. So I knew it was the headphones and not my gear. I wont touch hifiman after that. I know its probably a niche issue but still. After they already blew my shit i took them apart and the build quality on the inside was scary bad. Sure on the outside they look good but inside, total cheap garbage. MY PERSONAL OPINON is that said headphones using planar magnetic drivers suck ass. I had also bought the fostex t20rp mk3's which are "bass head" marketed headphones and there was no bass. 250hz is not bass. and there was a huge bloat at 250hz. so much that even setting -12db at 250hz on the EQ wouldn't fix the issue. it was that bad. I wont touch planar magnetic headphones because of this. not worth it. they may be great for tweeters (original use in home audio speakers/towers) but overall they suck. sure, the sundara's with +12db at 32hz would make them literally shake your head like a massager because "basshead" but overall they weren't great.
@@turtlet7201 Even the Sennheiser 560s at $140 blows the Sundara away. The Sundara 2020 drivers seemed really cheap quality that I wonder what other components in the headphones that they used cheap chinese components.
I don't envy Sennheiser. Imagine creating a product that becomes so loved that even over 20 years later people still love it over anything else you create in the same category and approximate price range. That has got to be pretty tough. After all, a business would optimally want to make newer products that existing owners would love to upgrade to AND that would bring in new customers. Of course, Sennheiser sells products in many other categories and price ranges, so luckily their evolution doesn't just hang on the HD 600 - but still. On the other hand, maybe the fact there hasn't been such enthusiasm to adopt the other 600-series headphones has the saving grace that it steers audiophiles to instead upgrade to the HD 800.
After having all the 6x0 line up I kept hd660s as my daily driver , I was wondering if the S2 would be worth upgrading but it seems that it's not really an upgrade just a different tunning :(
@@Tripokaridos22 what it says is- we've already got the 660s & we don't have to admit there's a better one than ours & spend another £500 if we say or think 660s2 is better ☺️ That's how it's coming across!! I've had the 600 for approx 20years & I'm finally going to buy an upgrade which I believe is the 660s2. Finally sennheiser have improved the bass!!
I had both 6xx (with new pads) and 660s for some time. 6xx felt just muddy in comparison with a lack of detail and soundstage. Now considering that 6xx are basically 650s I have hard time believing you that 660S2 are better than 660s yet still worse than 650. I wonder what setup did you use to listen to and what kind of music.
Just to the point of "HD600 with bass extension being what we all want", I am one person who objects! :P For me, a Dynamic Driver headphone needs rolled off subbass or else it sounds unnatural. Planars can pull linear or elevated subbass off, but out of all the DD headphones I tried, not a single one sounds good with linear bass.
Graph at 6:41 on this video plotting 600 v 660s2 (which he describes as a definite upgrade over 660s) told me everything I needed to know. And Sennheiser designers, 10:33 on the DMS video tells you everything you need to know.
I just dont see how this can compete at that price point with other offerings like Hifiman Edition XS in the same price range and broadly offers much more
you described so damn well why i like the 660s 2 more over my mezss 109 pro. the s2 dosent distord at all and get harsh with heavy metal. Rammstein is so damn enjoyable with these
I have the HD600 set and I modded mine with the Custom Cans Stage 2 Copper Mod and ZMF perforated lamb skin ear pads. The best $120 I ever spent in this hobby. They still have all the qualities that we know and love about the HD600, Improved the bass performance significantly I quality and quantity. Highly recommended.
Don't make fun of the marbled finished HD600 it is a great color. No I am not saying this because the marbled colorway looks better on people with gray hair... probably.
Now what would interest me personally, because no one made a video about this yet, is the HD6XX or HD600 with the copper mod in comparison to the 660S2. While this still doesn't bring all that much subbass in, I wonder how it performs comparatively. My 6XX with that mod and ZMF suede pads are quite interesting. A tad more slam, a little more spacious. But the only source for this mod is custom cans and some forum posts for quite a while ago.
I have HD6XX’s and HD58X Jubilee. I can’t nail down why persay, but I just prefer the HD6XX. I looked into the copper mod briefly and I’m interested in trying it. Do you think it’s worth it/ what does it change about the HD6XX’s?
@@alexbrier718 imo HD6XX has more separation and the mids is more engaging(?) but for HD58X (I own personally with zmf suede pads) less separation but the bass is slightly better.. i would say with zmf suede pads, it comes close with HD6XX stock
@@alexbrier718 Sorry for replying so late, I didn't see you comment. The copper mod is worth it and very versatile. It can basically turn the 6XX into a different headphone. From flat, to more bass, to a lot more bass. Everything is there. I personally love the more bass variant, so no foam at all, stock foam removed. If you decide to get it: also get thin nylon fabric from idk, an old pantyhose so you can stretch that below the copper rings as a dust protection, if you happen to use the variant with no foam. That makes it possible to have a dust free, bassier 6XX (more bass than EQ probably can do and I am sure, if you add a good bass shelf on top of that, you could get very deep reaching subbass)
The 6xx can be found for less than $200 on Drop on a regular basis. Even if you factor in the Law Of Diminishing returns, the v2 makes no sense whatsoever. P.S - my $99 refurbed 560s is hard to beat for value.
@@markweiss5913 I'd argue the "value" of your 560S is zero because I'd never enjoy listening to them at all. "Value" isn't a product of measurements and some calculable price-to-performance ratio. It comes down to how much you enjoy the experience of music listening, what that means to you, and how much you paid. If someone's gonna have 3x as much fun listening to a 600-series with better bass response and more treble detail - maybe that's the headphone they've always dreamed of - then it's worth it to them.

Hello, I really appreciate this review. I'm currently trying to decide between the Sennheiser 660S2 and the 600. I wanted to follow up with a question related to what to said in the middle of your video. Around the 6:50 min mark you mentioned about how the frequency response curve is flatter//more relaxed from 2KHz and up. You mentioned that this will lose some clarity on instrument tones, but it would have a benefit on electric guitars in rock genre music. I predominantly listen to Punk Rock/alternative Rock bands such as Sum 41, Blink-182, All Time Low, Fall out boy etc. Would you classify these types of bands that might benefit from a frequency response of the 660s2 or were you referring to heavier type of rock music such as Metal/hard core rock which is much more aggressive. The bands I predominantly listed to a a little softer than your heavy metal/hard core rock music.
Less treble is an upgrade rather than a downgrade. Instruments are insanely clearer and more detailed than ever. The only downside to this headset is the smaller sound stage.
I pre-orders the 660s2 and I already have the 660S about many years. Over all… the 660S2 lost room/stage But won some more powerful deeps and bass. Comfort also a little bit better. (Tested with the new Fiio K7 balanced) In my opinion… not really better than the 660S (and because of the big price difference… I would pay 660S
For added bass fundament I EQ my 660S which makes it really shine. I don't expect an upgrade buying the 660s2 also I doubt it purpose being an upgrade from the 660s, just a model upgrade.
I enjoyed the review but I do feel like you missed the mark on this one. I feel like, from your wording, there was a bias in favor of the HD600's from the outset that overshadowed the 660S2 getting to be its own headphone. I can understand your dilemma though. Like you, my preferred 600 series headphone overall WAS the HD600, but once I got the 660S2 things changed and seemingly like you, I had a bias towards my favorite going in. My most used headphones for the past 5 years have been the 600 series since the natural tone and presentation is just what I prefer in a headphone. The 660S's flaws are that it is too shouty, it does some of what the 600's do, more of what the 700's do, but not enough of what either of them do to justify existing (especially if you own both of the other headphones). I've always felt like its sound was more akin to the HD59X sound than the 600 series. Finally on the 660S2. They outright with ease offer a clearer look into the music and are both a better pair of cans for enjoying or inspecting music than the 600's. I don't feel like they make 650's or 600's irrelevant but I can easily be happy with all three for different reasons. That being said though, the 660S2's are in my opinion, the best of the three and less of a side grade than reviewers suggest. Owners seem to agree about how much better they are than the previous models (where you said you feel and feel like most would think the 600's were better). Still, I liked your review and appreciate your honest thoughts about the 660S2. I just don't quite feel like you gave it a chance to be what it is instead of what you wanted it to be. Again, I can relate. It is most of what I wanted but also a lot more than what I expected in some aspects and it is actually really good even compared to it's predecessors and a leap of an improvement over the original 660S.
BC they arent eff'n with that classic! People would melt. The 660s is the one that made no sense in the market so I think the idea to differentiate it was sound- they just didnt succeed, necessarily.

I've had HD600 for over 10 years now and my only complaint about it is that it's a bit shouty in the upper mid range. I have to listen to these check the difference, the reduction in the upper mids/treble might be overkill but I'll give it a go :)

@@alexbrier718 It adds sub bass, and more importantly, it adds slam to it, like physicality. I think it's worth it as the kit isn't very expensive (and it's reversible unless you also remove the foam behind the driver, but it's not necessary.).
@@Fafner888 +1. Also, the mod is tunable, so if you want a flatter response you can. I used it to get more control and extension, and to remove the lower mid-bloat which used to bleed into the vocals on my HD600. Everybody talks about EQing but no one explains how. What if you mainly listen to Apple Music on an iPhone using a dongle like Cayin RU6? How do you EQ that setup?
I actually would like an hd650 with full bass extension, much better upper mids than the 600, at least for me. Passing to 600 after a good listen with 650, it immediately sounds rough.
I think it images better, and sounds clearer than a 650. Also, the 650 can get shouty in the mids - I tested both back to back on a Bryston DAC into a WA23 Luna.
I EQ every headphone and hifi system to my liking and preferences. Been doing it for 40 years (even before the hearing got worse, tinnitus, loss of highs). I think it‘s necessary because every HP, loudspeaker and amp are different.

I currently use Shure 215 and Bose QC35ii if that helps. Thank you.
No word on any changes in detail retrieval (aside from the upper mids/treble tuning)? Interested in how the technicalities and dynamics of this pair up with the prior line. You can fix tuning with EQ on most decently tuned headphones.
Look for Soundnews review of the 660S2, he also has in the video a graph and a few details of how the 109Pro compare(3k are even more reduced and 7k quite a lot more emphasized and also a bigger sound stage in the 109Pro if I remember correctly).
Thanks Resolve! Do you feel they should have dared to experiment with the symmetry of L/R connections or would that have represented a fundamental betrayal of the classic design language?

Do you think this is more or less technically superior to the IE600? Similar price points so just wondering if IEMs are overtaking over ears at this level in the current market? I know that the ie600 wasn’t your tuning preference but if you leave that aside wondering your thoughts.
@@sidethan same can be said for speakers to headphones.. it still becomes useful to compare cross platform the value perspective along with technical performance.
@@sidethan I have 7Hz Salnotes Zero ($20) IEM and over-ear HiFiMAN HE400se ($85) and both are EQ'ed to Harman target (presets from oratory). To my ears I don't hear a big difference in soundstage, instrument separation. I can easily separate tracks to several stages (soundstage depth) with both without any problem, maybe 400se is a liiiittle bit better, but I'm not sure. But I've noticed the only one significant difference between IEM and over-ear headphone - with over-ear I can physically FEEL the vibrations of sound (especially the bass), which with IEMs I don't. It's not a deal-breaker of IEMs for me, of course, but the experience with over-ear headphone is more enjoyable with this physical feeling.
Sen's own measurement shows a very similar lower treble dip between the 660S and the S2. Your measurement shows a much deeper dip for the S2. What's cooking there? Btw personally I much prefer the 660S to either the 600 and especially to the muddy and veiled 650/6XX, all without eq. It seems to me that, once more, pricing issues obscure judgement in terms of sq only.
@@TheHEADPHONEShow But what is it then? Does the S2 have a much deeper dip than the S or not? People, including you, seem to be making a big deal out of it while they do not for the original S. Not enough comparison between the two 660s in the review. I have found the original 660S a good compromise between the 600 and the 650 but I don't understand where to place the S2. Confused...
@@razisn Well, in my comparison between the two, it uses the same degree of smoothing, so that's apples to apples. The thing is, even if both have the deep phase cancellation issue, it's narrow enough on both to where you probably wouldn't hear a difference between the two there. It only becomes a problem if you try to EQ that region up.

Hi! Wonder what you think of Sundara vs elegia?
Or maybe even the 650 vs the elegia?
@@stratelite1337 LCD-X ear poke problem made me refrain from buying them, I hate when my ears touch the driver
I have 600 650 660s and i love them. But i heard 660s2 and sound better in their own way. Enjoy them
DMS sent me here. BTW, marble HD600 looks unique and cool
I want an HD800S with sub bass thump, a man can dream can’t he?
I'd say Arya is pretty close to that comparison :) Arya with a lot of power has that slam and rumble.
Meze empyrean 2 got you covered 😊
Would you consider doing a no dedicated amp tier list? Headphones that are easily driven by anything and still sound pretty good?
ngl most of it will be IEMs
PEOPLE in world are stastcaly dumb maybe thats why
today I learned I'm a psychopath because I actually liked the HD600 marble design...
Yes, DMS did indeed send me here!
After having all the 6x0 line up I kept hd660s as my daily driver , I was wondering if the S2 would be worth upgrading but it seems that it's not really an upgrade just a different tunning :(
Which is probably an upgrade!! Why would they make them worse you wally?!?!
yea, but it might not be significant enough especially at the price.

Every people u ask that have all series like me and u... Gone tell u that keep 660s. That says a lot.
What amp are you using?
They use different drivers so maybe you just like the driver characteristics vs. the 6xx.
Just dont bealive him. I have the shame opinion like u 650 are muddy and not even close to 660s imaging speed clarity.
This is spot on with my impressions as well
I own the HD 6xx, HD 58X and I prefer my HD700! Go figure. It’s very subjective.
Definitely going to cop. Fixes a lot of what I don’t like about my HD600.
Just to the point of "HD600 with bass extension being what we all want", I am one person who objects! :P
For me, a Dynamic Driver headphone needs rolled off subbass or else it sounds unnatural. Planars can pull linear or elevated subbass off, but out of all the DD headphones I tried, not a single one sounds good with linear bass.
All that said, it seems like the HD600 with its more even midrange and added warmth is better for my taste.
guess why it sounds so good
Graph at 6:41 on this video plotting 600 v 660s2 (which he describes as a definite upgrade over 660s) told me everything I needed to know.
No I am not saying this because the marbled colorway looks better on people with gray hair... probably.
I've never had a Sennheiser with a slamy punchy bass. I guess this is no exception.
@@JTB-- thry still can't extend ruler flat to 30hz.

Why are you comparing the Hd 660S2 to the HD600 rather than comparing it to the HD660S
I've wondered this too. In so many reviews, they seem to want to pretend that the 660s doesn't exist.
Because the HD 660S2 is better than S1 in every way besides the price
Hd600 is legend and that is why.
HD660S was not at the level of the rest of the 6 series. The S2 is better, so they go directly to the king to compare it with
i'd say that sennheiser 600 series headphones dont have upgrades, they are all good in their own way and flavor, it just depends on what you prefer
The original clear was a decent upgrade and 600 like, though that's gone, so now only the Etymotic iem's have that neutral mids type sound.
Problem is that this is priced like an upgrade
@@PinePizza thanks for your response, I appreciate the feedback
Massdrop currently has the HD 6XX available for $239. Hard to justify $360 difference in price.
Exactly, have the 580x now, looking to get the 6xx pretty soon, but really like the 580x
The 6xx can be found for less than $200 on Drop on a regular basis. Even if you factor in the Law Of Diminishing returns, the v2 makes no sense whatsoever. P.S - my $99 refurbed 560s is hard to beat for value.
The 6XX is pretty much the best deal you can get in headphone history.
The 6XX is made up of junk parts that didn't make the cut for HD650s and an inferior build. You ARE getting less for your money.
"trailing ends of tones" and that's my Resolve bingo card complete 😂

It sounds like some of us would be better off just keeping the 600 or the 650.
I pre-orders the 660s2 and I already have the 660S about many years.
Over all… the 660S2 lost room/stage
But won some more powerful deeps and bass.
Comfort also a little bit better.
(Tested with the new Fiio K7 balanced)
In my opinion… not really better than the 660S (and because of the big price difference… I would pay 660S
For added bass fundament I EQ my 660S which makes it really shine. I don't expect an upgrade buying the 660s2 also I doubt it purpose being an upgrade from the 660s, just a model upgrade.
would you take a hd660s or hd660S2 for fps gaming?

That's a lot of tacos!
Why this upgrade wasn't just done to the HD600 is a mystery. HD600 with extended sub bass and better imaging would be perfect.
BC they arent eff'n with that classic! People would melt. The 660s is the one that made no sense in the market so I think the idea to differentiate it was sound- they just didnt succeed, necessarily.

It's call HD800s lol
@2:08 Can't compete with that 90s Marble drip.🤣 I went to a footlocker recently and its funny how the shoes on the wall look a lot like how it was 30 years ago.
I've had HD600 for over 10 years now and my only complaint about it is that it's a bit shouty in the upper mid range. I have to listen to these check the difference, the reduction in the upper mids/treble might be overkill but I'll give it a go :)
Just use a small peak filter around 3kHz and you have the same effect for 600€ less.

@@Fafner888 +1. Also, the mod is tunable, so if you want a flatter response you can.

No word on any changes in detail retrieval (aside from the upper mids/treble tuning)? Interested in how the technicalities and dynamics of this pair up with the prior line. You can fix tuning with EQ on most decently tuned headphones.

Sen's own measurement shows a very similar lower treble dip between the 660S and the S2. Your measurement shows a much deeper dip for the S2. What's cooking there? DMS sent me here. When I watched the conclusion part of you saying this headphone is twice the price and is not better than the ones you compared, no thanks! You speak the truth! No nonsense. I have the Sennheiser HD650. This headphone appeals to a small audience.
Any recommendations for a closed headphone without Bluetooth
Hello I was wondering what tells me how well different tones are reproduced through a headphone?
your ears!!
How do you think it stacks up against the 560S?
So is the v1 getting phased out? and is it worth buying those, since you can get them now for $250?
I’ve been using them for more than a year and I think they’re an absolute steal for $250. That said, I haven’t tried the HD600 or the HD650 so I can’t comment on those.
Hd660s is amazing I love mine also have the hd600, 560s, 58x. I'd buy the hd660s for that price 100%!!! this new 2 version is kinda garbage and a over priced dud.
Will a goXLR power these? Or do I need to get an amp?
660s and 2 Have way better imaging separation, tight bass and faster than the others. But conveniently u forgot to say.
cope
I agree, I have all 3 in my collection and the 660s are easily the best of the bunch. Imo hd660s>hs600>hd650 I am interested to hear what is different with them but don't want to spend £500 to find out.
@@colonelbasic9736 I fully agree.
@@colonelbasic9736 yea I feel the hd660s has better technicalities for sure they are lovely but I think the hd600 has that even (only slightly) better timbre and just slightly better frequency response. I heard the hd6xx/650 before and while they sounded relax and had a slightly more fun bass they definitely feel like the worst of the bunch. Hd660s and hd600 all day! :)
@@soraflame66 Honestly i love all HD 6 line for different reassons, my Favorite are 660s and 600 . 600 are the most clear of them all, and 660s are something in the middle warm , tight , fast , bigger soundstage, amazing imaging . 650 on the other hand are warm smooth , but i think 660s is also has that in a way so HD 600 + 660s are all we need :)
Do they take to sub bass eq better than the 650?
DMS sent me...although it was already automatically queued on my autoplay anyway
Use ZMF pads on 600 or 650 you get 660S2
