Usually a ticket book has 1 or 2 major payouts >5X the ticket price. If you can get information from the store cashier on whether the book had a major hit, then you lower your risks of losing money by not playing it. I never buy from the vending machines. Also there is no 'magic' number of the ticket to help your odds. I have a won big payouts in the beginning, middle and end, it's all about how you choose to inform yourself to increase the probability of winning.
you should have let it ride = take your winnings and buy the lottery tickets again. keep doing that until either you run out of winnings or you hit a really big jackpot (like $1000+)

:) Next time you can save yourself a lot of scratching and from a lot of trying to figure out if you have a winner or not. The very bottom line of the card can be scratched off to reveal a number in parenthesis if it's a winner. Multiple prizes on the same card will be revealed with 2 sets of parenthesis.
