- 1 to replace 2. Yup, with the E30 & W124 sold, I needed another daily-driver, and was scoping the classifieds for something that ticked all my boxes. It had to be a 5sp manual, preferably rear-wheel drive, and easy to maintain. Equally important, it had to have a low annual road tax. This is important when you own several cars...
Viola! Found this rare BMW E36 318i out in Banting, went to see it and drive it twice, sealed the deal.
Collected her yesterday, she's getting a full check-up now and then off to the painters! Stay tuned for more to come folks, fun times ahead! Let's see if I can do as the title says, cap it all at 10k, including the purchase price, wish me luck! 😀

Congrats bro. E36 is my favourite 3 Series ever. It still looks as good now as the first time I saw it in 1991. I know what you mean by the BMW smell. When I drove an E84 X1 back in 2015, the moment I sat in it, I remembered the interior smell of my uncle's E30 from the 80s. Brought back sweet memories of childhood.

Thank you!! Hmm, a service history would be great, check the electronics, they tend to suffer more than the mechanical in the long run, check for rust. If at all possible, bring a mech along (or it to him), if it's a car you're absolutely sure that u want 😊

I use to have a 318i 1996 too but it's 5-speed auto & it's 1.9 liter. I wonder why yours is only 1.8 liter? It's good for you to review old cars where not many dares to venture. Cheers....to bringing life to old cars.

congrats on the e36 bro. btw..the e36 bonnet can open further to 90 degs..which locks it in the open position without relying on the struts to keep it up.

these 318i engines are probably the most reliable unit bmw ever made, uk spec makes it so much better built compared to the local assembled e36 of these generation..

I was using the car daily up till the point I sold it last year. It's quite easy to use despite the 3 pedals and maintenance was a cinch, relatively, given it's a BMW 😊

I’d put everything back to original. It’s just silly to use open pod. No benefits at all. The original box is best. This is a daily driver.
Regarding that engine bonnet strut. You can buy one for just rm30 online.

e36 vs e46 318i, which one would u say is better? (in terms of overall handling, putting aside electronic advances)
Hmm, I would reckon the E46 might offer a better overall driving experience, while the E36 is still a very raw car, akin to my Alfa 155, and that's why I like it 😁
How about the roadtax and yearly total cost needed to maintain the 318i ?
Road tax is cheap cos it's only a 1.8L, but of course parts aren't, being German and all. Also I've heard recently that spare parts are getting harder to find for E36s in general 😕
My first car during college days.. 318i E36.. but I remember it break down quite often.. hmm ;/ maybe my mechanic weren’t good and often I get chop by them..
Possibly, cos this old fella has minimal electronics and computerization, a pretty basic car actually 😊

Hey Chris, where did you do the paint job? The lowest quote I got after going to 3 different shops was 2.5k for my small 206 hatch. It did come with a 2 year warranty though.

The car had been sold, but while I had it, the maintenance was very easy, parts still available and not that expensive iirc, relatively speaking 😊

A service history would be good, or at least some semblance of a maintenance record, rust isn't much of an issue iirc, and the ppwertrain is quite robust, however, as with all old cars, do check out all the electronics, which can have issues over time. If possible, bring someone who knows the E36 well with you when u view it, good luck!👍🏽🙏🏽😊

Very good question!! It ALL depends on variant and the condition it's in. Also if a car is no longer eligible for a hire purchase loan, and is a cash buy, prices will drop significantly 😃

Does this feel noticeably more modern to drive than the E30?
Nope, feels about the same, only difference is it's slightly more comfortable for me, cos I'm 6'2". This car feels just as raw and as unbridled as the E30 😊

sold the E30? this is just my opinion...but the E36 cannot match the charm of the E30. the E36 era cars have those bad quality 90s plastic that get worse with time, and it really shows in this video...
