If season 4 sticks the landing, i think this will be one of those seasons that becomes more appreciated by the fandom with time. To me its a slow yet necessary step in the story. However, if season 4 fails, this will, most likely, be viewed as the beginning of its downfall.
Completely agreed. After the season sunk in for what it was, it no longer felt as confusing as it felt unfinished. It took its own sweet time to unfurl and to find out that they shot both this season and next season back to back clarified things greatly. I wish we didn't have to wait so long for the resolution, but I think it could play out beautifully like you said
This season is so obviously a part 1, it literally ends on a cliffhanger. Season 4 is going to make this season look a lot better when it comes out
For sure. It would have been better recepted if they would have labeled it part 1 of 2. Also, it really should have had fewer episodes with less Fak.

My biggest problem with the Claire Carmy plot line isn’t even Claire herself but rather it’s been a whole season and he still hasn’t gone to speak to her
thats the point though, hes been so self destructive that he hasnt been able to do it. hes yet to even make up with richie yet and hes had a whole season in the same kitchen with him
Yeah... because it's only been like a month for Carmy. Which is a realistic amount of time for a person with social anxiety to put off addressing a social issue - especially when they have other things to distract themselves with.
I understand that that’s the point but it’s not very entertaining as a viewer to watch a whole season of a show and the character arc in the end is in the same place that it was at the beginning of the season
I would have enjoyed more if carmy would finally speak up to Claire and she either is at a point where she completely moved on or was in a new relationship
@@dallin1076right, I was very disappointed it didn’t go anywhere the WHOLE season, like I guess you could make the excuse that a person with anxiety would take a lot of time irl to address an issue like that but…. I just don’t think that’s a sound excuse for this show lol like it’s a drama. The fact she only showed up once except for flashbacks and didn’t even play an interesting role was disappointing.

It's also a way of imparting to the viewer the frustration Carmy probably feels about their ridiculous antics in the midst of his trauma and psychosis. The season is about haunting.

@@jasperkemp-myers6707 i was looking forward to the slower pace but the storytelling dragged in between the stand out moments 😕 the first ep was beautiful, napkins showed the audience tina’s journey and what exactly about mikey made him so special , and syd’s estrangement from her own restaurant and partner was heartrending to watch. but still, sm scenes were wasted on telling not showing, or not being important
I thought the season was kinda whatever, but I’m glad you pointed out the chefs dinner scene in the finale. It felt like the show just sat me down and made me watch these chefs sniff their own farts as they talked in a way that was somehow very earnest and natural, yet also so esoteric and stilted. It felt like I was watching an interview rather than a conversation, an interview that felt like it was more profound than it actually was. And it took up a third of the episode

Yeah, this whole scene was trash and I am a big fan of these chefs and have watched/read endless interviews with them all - but that's not what this show should be about. This season as a whole relied way too much on cameos from famous chefs / actors rather than just progressing the story. Still great TV but just nowhere near as compelling as past seasons.
@@jjdriessen I’m glad to have that perspective as someone who doesn’t know anything about the fine dining world/celeb chefs. I could tell every time they were showcasing someone that I felt like I was SUPPOSED to know and it always bored me, not bc I don’t appreciate what these people do but because I’m here for the stories of the characters.
I’m relieved to hear that these extended cameos rang just as hollow for a fan of the food world though bc it hopefully means that I wasn’t missing out on a whole lot of substance/subtext because of my lack of prerequisite knowledge. I know the show is a love letter to food and the chefs that make it, but I wish they had been far more subtle with their conveying of that love, like how the love letter that this show also writes to Chicago never feels overbearing or pretentious.

I agree, the guys coming to help put a system in place for Ibrahim was one of the moments in the season
it reminded me a lot of season 3 of atlanta, taking the show in a much different direction stylistically to show how uncomfortable the characters are in their new environment.
it sounds pretentious as hell but bear with me: i think this season and how it was structured was a really interesting way to show how carmy is still trapped in the freezer, unwilling to confront his mistakes, instead trying as hard as he can to push himself, ignoring the connections and relationships around him in order to succeed. and only at the ever funeral where he finally has a chance to confront his former chef is he able to realize how much damage he's been doing to himself and the others. the "to be continued" at the end of the season felt like an acknowledgement that the season was frozen, and a promise that next season will break out of the freezer. i do understand a lot of the critisisms it's been getting and agree that it wasn't nearly as satisying as the previous seasons, but i still really enjoyed it
(also it feels worth noting that the poster art for this season is the resturaunt's logo from inside the freezer walls illuminated by the sparks of the saw used to open the freezer in the season 2 finale)

Richie was literally using concepts and processes named and worked on in therapy which, as a clinician, I loved. Richie is doing his therapy practice and we’re proud!
Biggest enemy of The Bear is the high expectation it told the audience to set from it.
Episode 8 was the most realistic depiction of labor I've seen on TV. It goes between major intensity to seemingly endless pauses. I salute them for that. Too many people don't understand what a long haul labor is and how necessary focused support is. It's such an intense time, a collapsing of past and present and future. I really appreciated The Bear honoring that experience.
I just felt like an entire season went by and... nothing happened. Carmy hasn't even spoken to Claire!
Yeah very stagnant
This is one of the reasons I loved the episode Ice Chips. The acting and writing were great and also, even though it was focused on characters, stuff happened. There was a real turning point in a relationship and also obviously the whole birth thing. This and Napkins were my favorite episodes. They didn't seem lost and didn't rely so much on endless montages and flashbacks.
The amount of Faks in this season was wayyy too much BUT I did like how their bit about "haunting" kind of lined up with all of the characters and their motivations. I think there is something relatable and dark about trying to dig yourself out of the hole you are in and then kind of missing the hole because at least in the hole you felt motivated to do get out. No one prepares you for when you get out and actually succeed or what that might feel like. It was a messy season, but the nostalgia tied up in trauma was an interesting thing to explore and I hope they sow the seeds they've planted in the next season.
I'm glad to see that some people enjoyed Season 3 like I did!

Idk how people see anyone other than carmy as the villain lol. He's repeating cycles of trauma onto the very people who want him to succeed and have been there for him. Everytime they try to help he just says "I'm good" shirking all responsibility for his actions away.

He could be the greatest chef on earth but that still wouldn't change the fact that he picked sydney, made her a patner and still NEVER works with her.

@@danielz-v4083 I agree that he's a great chef, but Fields is regarded as/was the best chef in the world in an episode. The guy who gave Carmy severe anxiety and ulcers. Being the best does not inherently excuse you from being a bad person. The point of the last episode is to show how all these other amazing chefs who are top of the field had positive memories with their mentors whereas Sydney is having flashbacks showing Carmy holding her back and putting her down.
It's this cycle of abuse that makes me call him the villain. Not because he's inherently bad like fields is shown, but because he doesn't show any real recognition and change that this has been a problem for a long time now.
Edit: I'd also like to add that the CDC of Ever (who has 3 stars) values Sydney's skills highly enough that he thinks she can run a restaurant, so in the show she's not a slouch by any measure.
i don't see her as a villain personally, but i just didn't enjoy having a love story in the midst of everything else going on. i generally am not into romance in tv and movies so maybe that's why, but i watch The Bear for the friendship among the crew, the tension in the kitchen, suspense when the restaurant is at risk, etc. Claire's plot just bored me.
i love the scenes where chefs are sharing their experiences because it made sydney realize there's so much more out there, also and ode to those actual chefs

It was just so cringy and yes professional don’t talk like that I have multiple family members in my life who are professionals in their field and don’t talk with colleagues like that. Idk how to really explain it but it’s just so unnatural and cringy and it felt weird when they started fantasizing about their beginnings and stuff
Honestly I mostly just want Claire to get more screen time. They put so much importance on her loss and impact on Camry’s life in season 3 that isn’t earned because we didn’t get to see her relationship with Carmy develop. I like the actress and I think she does a good job with the very little she’s given, but it’s not enough to give it the thematic weight all the flashbacks to her in season 3 imply.
Plus alot of what they say about Claire, I want to hear her response. Like the Faks telling her she's carmy's peace. Or that she's everything. That things with her are okay, or they are terrible. We hear alot about Claire, but she doesn't get much space as a real character. The other characters I feel are to some extent cherished and it feels like the show wants us to think that about Claire, but never give her a chance to speak for herself. This entire season, Carmy was partly dangling on what claire meant, but everytime people brought her up to fix Carmy, I think I don't want that for her, because I don't want that for myself and think she deserves better. IDK it feels like the show wants you to fill in the blanks of both creating affection for claire based on what we are told (She's basically the ultimate crush). Then I also doing the work based on my own experience on what she deserves or might want for herself. If claire is so important or even to be respected so well as a character please let her speak about herself, her relationship and her experiences.
Both of the Fak actors being producers (Matty Matheson being an EP and Ricky Staffieri being a co-producer) left a really bitter taste in terms of their increased screentime

I personally like the John Cena cameo, but I completely understand why people started having problems with them on that ep.
And the worst part is that it just keeps going.
Really smart “self insert characters” know when to pace themselves, like Tarantino in his movies, Ryan from The Office having great moments without oversteering, Arrested Dev has some insanely funny stuff with the producer and writers … the Fak’s felt like they were in the way
EP is just a way to get cash on the back end.
I genuinely do not understand the hatred for Claire. I found myself rooting for Carmy and Claire so fucking much. I find Carmys anxiety and inability to connect with people very relatable, so seeing him have this massive social triumph with Claire made me feel so happy and uplifted.
I swear I feel like I’m watching a different show than a lot of the fan base sometimes. Thought Carmy and Claire had amazing chemistry, while everyone else apparently thought that she was the worst character in television history. I thought the ice chips episode was really moving and one of the best episodes this season, while apparently a lot of people thought it was the worst episode of the entire series
I didn’t even know people hated her- I really liked her! And I thought the story line last season and this season regarding her was really good and relatable- even though I wanted to smack Carmy for not reaching out to her.
I guest people just hate to see a supportive female character, because it’s not very “feminist”. I think watching Claire being so nice and supportive remind those “independent” women that they are not being independent, they just being an asshole.
the issue with Claire is that she is not her own person. she never has her own perspective on her own wants and needs outside of carmy. all the side characters are pretty fleshed out and have their own rich lives and then you have fucking Claire who literally only exists to be carms love interest. she's a manic pixie dream girl lmao

the collective seasons will eventually present like a 5-course meal. season three is the salad dish; the palate cleanser before the main course. this season is slower and minor character focused in order to prepare for a plot heavy finisher.
I think the best summary I could make after binging season 3 yesterday was that it was completely stagnant. It felt like nobody was going everywhere because so much of it took place in the past. it was very frustrating.

That was the point. Also it was just a month of life in real time. People in real do take way more than to reinvent themselves if dey ever do at all. We r just used to character arcs/growths which is why this feels like nothing happened.

I love artsy movies and shows but this season felt so stagnant. I loved the Tina episode and I loved Richie’s stuff but the fact that we got very little character progression for most of our main cast makes it feel like they were focused on more moving the show in a more artistic direction but then we got so many scenes of the Fak’s just “doing their thing”. It felt really inconsistent in that way.

It's not artistic to play 5 different flashback clips over and over. It's just stagnation for stagnations sake. Like Syds ending of the season, the uncles threat and Richies invitation were all good things to drive it forward but holy hell. Two good episodes don't make for a good season

what do we know about her? her, specifically, other than she works at a hospital and she went to med school? what do we know about her family, her interests, her hobbies, her past? nothing. she only matters in such as she relates to carmy. her only relevance to the story is that with her, carmy feels “calm” and “attuned” and less restless. those are all hallmarks of the MPDG trope. and they had two seasons now to flesh her out, if her character truly mattered to the writers. they had ample opportunity but they did nothing about. so can you blame me for not giving a shit?
Yes exactly! I felt this way after season 2. She felt like just a plot device, she was always presented in comparison to Carmy. Meaning being the balancing force towards whatever he was going through.
Even the way they shot scenes with her, it felt different than other scenes. The lighting, the angles, all that felt like I was suddenly watching a romantic drama. Which I get was probably used to emphasize that she was a romantic interest but it felt over the top. It felt like her sole existence in the show was Carmy’s love interest. I got bored with her character.
@@TheRealAlee123 This was my reaction as well. I just also think Molly Gordon is a bad actress. If they had cast her better, punched up her dialog, and made her an actual ROCK for Carmy and not an escape, her departure would've hit way harder.

I thought it was a good season but I prefer S2. I understand why Carmy Is acting like that but he needs to take some responsibility, he's repeating his trauma and he's stuck. Losing Sydney would be the cost of his actions, but tbh I doubt she'll leave.
I also liked seeing Donna and Sugar interact more, and I totally ship Richie and Jess.

@@San-li9ml there was definitely something off. Watching the first episode I felt like the show was a bit high on its own fumes. I hate to say it, but when Sugar called Carmy about Michael, I felt like they were milking it too much at this point. Maybe also because the whole episode till that point had been an avant-garde gloom-fest. I entirely understand the point too, Carmy got totally absorbed in it. I just felt like there was a more tasteful way to execute the same idea.
Thank you for talking about the atrocity that was the conversations in the final episode. It was actually painful to sit through just one minute of that pointless drivel and then it went on for 15 more. Complete waste of time for a season finale

I think it’s to show the dissonance of the joy/purpose that the great chefs have vs the dynamic at the bear. Sydney comparing her power dynamic with Carmy vs another chef being celebrated by his boss. Idk tho. It didn’t bother me as much as others

the S2 finale being the series' best episode is an insane take to me--it's great, don't get me wrong, but also includes one of the show's biggest blunders: the claire/carmy miscommunication (her leaving him after overhearing him say smg regrettable as he was freaking out over being trapped in a fridge on the opening night of his restaurant). it was the one moment all season long that felt totally contrived and hackneyed. the season is near-perfect apart from that; "Forks" and "Fishes" are substantially better episodes, as are "Review" (my #1) and the S1 finale
Forks is one of my favourite episodes of TV in recent memory.
I felt like 3 meandered in a way that felt like I was watching the first half of a two season arc.

I didn't like this season as much as the previous ones (with the exception of the Tina episode, that was peak cinema), but I will say the scene from finale of Carmy talking to the abusive chef hit me incredibly hard. The abusive 'mentor' is such a common trauma point for so many people, especially highly-ambitious or highly-creative or, God forbid, both. It's always crushing to hear a bully who gave you a life-long trauma didn't really think much about you at all, but it's a special level of hell when that bully is a 'mentor' who expects gratitude for that treatment, for making you 'tough' or 'stoking your ambition' or whatever. The scene has gutted me, I was more upset than after Fishes, and God knows I had my share of nightmare family dinners, too.
Sounds more like parental issues than the bear my guy.
I don't know why we as an audience should care about Claire when we've barely seen her and Carmy interact. I don't really feel a connection between the two of them
I agree with this take. Like I don’t understand the hatred of Claire, as in viewing her as the villain (I understand having issues with how the character is written however), nor do I understand the love for her character. Like you, I feel like we really shouldn’t care that much about her. I actually love how Richie and Sydney responded every time she was mentioned this season, because they’re trying to work to make the restaurant work, who cares about Claire, especially when he tried calming down by thinking about her again and it failed, only for Sydney to calm him down again & get him to focus.
He can’t even call Claire to apologize & she gives him panic attacks or makes them worse, he just needs to end it so that storyline can be wrapped up. But I do also feel that it’s realistic for his character to put this off.
having been a fan of the song for the longest time, loved the use of Save it For Later throughout the season. Felt very on brand for Carmen

You really hit it out of the park with your critique of the Faks and how sometimes they stretch some aspects way too long in this season. I liked having a little bit more of the Faks at the beginning, but episode 5 burned me out on them so fucking quickly.
And I had the same issue with the chefs talking about their experiences in the last episode. It was really nice at first because we got to see how Carmy and Syd related to different stories in different ways, but then we got way too many stories that didn't have any impact on them and were probably just real stories Christopher Storer lived or heard and wanted to share because he thought they were funny. That slowed down the episode a lot, and I wish they could've used that time to do something more interesting or even just to make the episode shorter.
Still, it was an amazing season in my eyes, and I kinda wished the season was a few episodes longer, but since the next season is coming out relatively soon, I'll accept it.
My biggest gripe with Season 3 is that it doesnt have a sense of internal resolution. Yes, yes, cliffhangers have existed in narratives for centuries, but this season leaves entire character arcs and plot threads hanging in the balance, dragging out narrative potential with zero to little payoff. On the whole, it just feels dramatically incomplete.
I think people that say nothing happens in this season are not really watching what's happening. The restaurant is metaphorically on fire. Carmy is retreating into himself and it's not working the whole season but he keeps going thinking it will pay off running away from his problems if he runs fast enough. But because of him trying to outrun his problems and goign so fast they missed that they got reviewed and this review is CAN sink the restraunt before it even gets legs. Meanwhile Syd is also kind of spiraling cause She's trying to pick up for Carmy's chaos. Things are happening but it's more internal and emotional then it is external and a passage of events
While many people think Carmy’s obsession with time and excellence came out of nowhere, that’s actually not the case. It’s been perfectly set up since season 1, just waiting to boil over when Carmy was at his mentally lowest
The S3 finale was a very surprising masterpiece, Jamie Lee Curtis just came in and delivered one of the best performances of this year so far

I just love how real and deep every character is written, season 3 does such a good job at establishing a change in pace. I honestly think it is completely on par with the 1st and 2nd season, very rare for a show to completely switch up the direction and tone, and as some may say it'll bore you, I believe it makes you care for all the characters on a deeper level.
Season 3 is an example of when a show's writers pay too much attention to the praise and amplify on the parts that were praised without creating anything new. Season 3 had no content.
I love that the audience is divided for this season. Because since the beginning this season is much more subtle, since in the time frame not much thing really happens in terms of character development or plot. It’s like the audience is one of the characters that are as much as disappointed with Carmy and can’t predict where he goes and why he acts the way he acts. The season is GREAT imo. But it has the feeling of being frozen as much as Carmy is in the season. He doesn’t move forward and is deep in fear until the last episode. He doesn’t work things over with Richie, he doesn’t work things over with his mom which his avoiding, he’s avoiding Claire Bear and diving deeper in the kitchen to try to keep away from his own life.
So I kinda understand the disappointment from the fans that didn't like the season: the main character still stuck in the freezer. And we even seen him returning to the freezer again.
I was so shocked when people didn't really love this season, i thought it was incredible. the small character moments are much more impactful than they were in previous seasons, ice chips is my favourite episode of the whole show so far and it's building up to the next season so beautifully

@@jakemcconnell1636thought it was probably the best episode this season. I didn’t love season 3 because I felt like there was such little character progression whereas 1 and 2 were so focused on how every character reacted to losing Mikey and then stepping into the world of fine dining.
Honestly thought the show went downhill with the season 2 finale. The fridge sequence felt soap opera-like and the whole breakup with Claire was crazy contrived. Then season 3 didn’t provide any conclusion or continuation for any of the season 2 plot lines. Honestly a waste of a season. The only discernible things that happened or changed were the Ever restaurant closing and Sydney wanting to leave The Bear.
And she didnt even come to a decision 😅
Tina mikey scene was top tier though one of the best of the whole show
felt like this season was entirely build up, felt like only a few actual things happened. the whole season could just be summed up as: Carm struggles with pretty much the same shit as the last two seasons (except now there’s one new thing he does fucking nothing about), nat has a baby that we see about 20 seconds of after a whole episode of making it seem important to the story, and syd considers a job offer. I just don’t understand why they would write this way, I finished the season thinking literally nothing major happened.
I also felt like the brothers were annoying but honestly I interpreted it that that was on purpose. The show is forcing us to slow down and spend time with these idiots while so much more should be going on. It feels so real, I see so much of my life in that- especially working in a community where you just have to work with the people around you and your struggle between efficiency and perfection is always in conflict with at least some of the people who have to be there because it’s a community. You can’t get rid of them, and you would not really want to cause they are like family but still you struggle with that inner drive towards perfection. I love how everyone treats the brothers, with Sugar and Claire calling them „my love“ and treating them with kindness even though the audience is internally screaming for them to just shut up.
I work with allot of people with intellectual disabilities- some of them sever while others you wouldn’t notice it at all, but they are kind of like the brothers honestly. And to see everyone’s real and honest kindness towards them and not just tolerating them really made the show in my opinion.
The actors and writers, producers and directors of this show really care about its characters and it shows. Tina is an example of someone wanting for more and realising she can be so much more in one life than just one thing. Lionel Boyce has really sharpened his acting since s1 (props to good writing and his commitment to the craft). I find that women in film (black women especially) are stripped of complexity and perceived as all right or all wrong. Sydney is probably one of the most complex characters on tv right now period. Fak is an unsung hero and I believe out of all of them, he cares about The B the most. He’s also just absolutely hilarious all round. Richie used to be on my shit list, but his character has had the most growth in the entire show. Anyways. S3 was brilliant. A slow burner but the pay off is immaculate. Can’t wait for s4 to let it rip!
I still love this show, but felt that there was too much focus placed on Carmy and Claire's relationship, compared to previous seasons. Carmy was flashing back to Claire almost every episode, which eventually became redundant.

It’s interesting, I really hated how contrived the Claire freezer episode was, and I get PTSD every time she’s mentioned. Please move on, I want him to go all in on the restaurant, let him be the tortured genius, it doesn’t need forced melodrama
i was so surprised to learn that people hated claire because i loved her from the moment she made her appearance!! like she is clearly the counter balance carmy needs to understand that suffering and success don’t have to go hand in hand. yes, the claire flashbacks were redundant at times but there’s no denying her place in the show moving forward.

With the amount of screen time the Faks had this season, while I didn’t mind it too much, it seemed like they were setting up a Fak spin-off.
Although I didn’t enjoy this season as much as the other two I think It did it exactly what it needed to do, it took its time to stop and show how Carmys refusal to deal with his own trauma is harming everyone around him, creating that cyclical nature of trauma, my only problem would be I felt Carmy finally meeting chef winger came a bit out of nowhere but that’s just me personally, felt it could’ve done with a bit more build up
The message of season 3 for me was how the characters achieved their season 2 goal of opening the restaurant and other shows might end there like yay! They did it everything’s great now. But season 3 shows how in real life things aren’t suddenly hunky dory now that they have the restaurant and if anything life is getting harder for these characters.
I think season 3 and 4 being filmed back to back will help us properly assess this season and see how it develops into what happens next season. I've enjoyed this one as much as the rest though but excited to see how it matches up to what is presumably the final season

Also, 100000% agree about this season lacking direction, I noticed that even the editing in some Storer-directed episodes was very "shot-reserve shot" during dialogue scenes, or alternatively they'd just hold on a medium-shot and never cut in closer (there's a scene in episode 9 with Tina and Marcus that I kept BEGGING to use a slow zoom-in or cut to a diff angle just cause the scene felt so Stagnant™)

honestly I love the idea of the donna episode just being an uncut video of her and nat, works so well contrast to their previous scene in fishes, honestly so adorable and Jamie as usual killed it as usual
Jaimie Lee Curtis is so outstanding in this show like... every scene she is in she just carries HARD! The only reason an episode like "Ice Chips" can work even though it´s 2 actresses in a room talking for 40 minutes is due to the jawdropping acting on display... Give this lady an Emmy for gods sake!
I like season 3 a lot. Yes it’s different from previous two but it’s needed. Where previous seasons are building up tensions and offer concluded resolutions in some way, this season allow rooms for us to breathe, slow down a little and remember why they choose this in the first place and why they are the way they are. It’s offered a sense of closure, and acceptance. I cannot wait to see what next season has to offer.
I did not mind Claire in the second season because I feel like she is us, she is the audience. She is there to understand Carmy as a person. She said this in the second season when Carmy asked why she chose to be a Doctor. She just like the audience is trying to understand Carmy.
Gotta be honest the entire season killed any good will the show had, I seriously can’t remember a scene or moment from this season that I wanted to continue watching or show to people to get them interested. It just felt way over indulgent, rather than have one episode of montage it felt like we got an entire season of that since none of the dialogue or actions of the characters continue the story in a meaningful way.
For me, it feels like season 1 is "trying to convince people to climb a mountain," season 2 is "climbing the mountain" and season 3 is "What do we do now that we've climbed this mountain?"

I loved that each episode had a character study. Everybody on this show is an important character, I loved seeing where everybody was coming from. It definitely felt like season 2.5, but that's okay with me because the first two seasons were so incredible and got me to care about all the characters so much that I'm okay taking a little breather and getting to know them better and then diving back into the story next season.
Kinda make sense this season was the “set up” season since their original plan was to film 3&4 back to back

I loved season 3 specially because it showed how carmy replicated the bad behavior that traumatized him as a chef onto sid and the staff, which led to sid being slowly traumatized, incapable of letting go of the bad thing (which can also be good sometimes).
Also carmy not reaching out to claire was very significant and the audience missing her and wanting to know about her almost mimics how she probably feels about carmy
And also i think the vibe of each season kinda portrays the vibe of what’s happening with the characters, so season 3 being moody, confusing and going nowhere, like limbo, makes a lot of sense
I think this and Skip Intro's review of season 3 are the best I've seen. The writing of this show and the fact that season 4 will be the last one should be an indicator of this season being a "setup season" and the writers knowing what they are doing.
Some people think that by the end "The Bear" will turn back to "The Beef", since the show told us that the sandwiches are the only part of the restaurant that are making money. But I think Carmy will acknowledge his traumatic pass and move on from it, turning The Bear into a more "family" oriented establishment (with or without Syd) like when Michael was alive and running "The Beef".
This new trend of people wanting things to fail after 2 or 3 seasons is getting embarrassing. Its like a movement to gatekeep any upcoming shows from being in that conversations with the greatest. The main complaint I've been seeing regarding this season is that "nothing progresses" which couldn't be further from the truth. Do I miss the chaos of letting it rip while New Noise by Refused plays? Of course... but seeing characters like Marcus and Sydney grow up was so poignant . Natalie going through child birth and the adventures ofFak's alone made it the funniest season thus far. It's also a story clearly left to be finished which makes the criticisms even more ridiculous in my opinion. Is it the weakest season? Sure, but its still prestige television at an extremely high level that could potentially age better after season 4.
It isn’t a trend. People loved The Bear and there wasn’t anyone who wanted it to fail. Everyone wanted it to be the new greatest show ever. They fumbled the bag though, and people saw it. It’s evident. The story DIDN’T progress. Carmy is stuck the whole season and his only decision and moment is when he talks to Fields. Sydney spends the whole season contemplating her decision, ultimately for nothing to actually happen. Marcus gets one moment to talk about his mom and is practically sidelined the whole time. Tina, throughout the season, is clearly struggling to create dishes and wants to expand, but instead we get an episode showing her backstory. While it was nice, it didn’t serve anything.
Going back to Carmy, his whole arc was feeling depressed over Claire and wanting to apologize, and nothing there either. There was a huge increase in montages and use of music to the point where it became a joke. I personally liked the Faks, I though John Cena did great, but it’s so evident that they got much more time than prominent characters. You said “seeing Marcus and Natalie grow up was so poignant.” When they don’t grow. They had one conversation together about themselves and that’s it. There was no character development at all this season which is another reason it wasn’t as good. The show established that development was one of the things they shined at, and to have no character develop at all is just crazy.
I think season 4 will be better, but having the mentality that people want shows to fail is just an excuse for being upset that the show has lost quality.
Disliking S3 is fair, but I personally loved it. Its not that the criticisms are invalid, its just that I dont agree with them.

it literally did. They got the review at the end of the season which still has more to tell btw. I understand peoples frustrations with this season completely. But some of the discourse online is beyond unfair with people who haven't even seen an episode already coming to a conclusion about the season.
@@Keizi Yeah they find out they’re getting the review at the end of ep 4, have a filler episode trying to take a photo for it, and then don’t mention it at all other than a couple times until the final moments of the season. Nothing happened. In season two we got to actually see the growth and progress of their restaurant while also them as characters. This had neither. And for the other people you’re complaining about who haven’t seen it, that’s every tv show. The Bear isn’t special to that.
The Bear dropped the ball. It’s as simple as that.
John Cena was an odd choice. He stuck out a lit. But without the Faks, the show loses its working class roots and becomes too high-brow. The Faks retain a sense of the working class chaos that season 1 had.

Yeah it took me a long time to get through season 3 and I did get pretty bored often I can't lie. I didn't mind the Fak's though I thought they were funny...although their bits definitely went on for too long.
Also I had NO IDEA people hated Claire.
there were some really hard hitting episodes and moments in this season. to me, this season felt stagnant because it’s how carmy feels. when you’re extremely traumatized and haven’t taken any time to process any of it, you often feel frozen and unable to progress. you keep reliving the same moments and patterns over and over again. i felt like it was a pretty accurate representation of how unaddressed trauma manifests itself in someone who doesn’t want to acknowledge it because its too painful. there were definitely some things in this season that i wasn’t a fan of, but i found it to be a lot better than what most people were saying about it. i definitely think that season 4 will determine the shows fate, and my prediction is that they will scrap the bear and go back to their roots.
I think season 3 messed up the message. Chef David is not a bad apple, he's just a little meaner than his peers. Chef Terry and all the other real chefs who cameo probably traumatized cooks, too. Carmy confronting David felt like a cop-out. It's not so easy as telling off a single mean chef.
claire is manic pixie dream girl! also season 4 was filmed right after season 3 so i get these this season was a part 1 version- certainly felt like it
I think this season is not one of content but one form, it regroups wonderful and innovative cinematography with scenes like, the restaurant from outside as an ode to Edward Hopper, Fak when he's asked by the photographer to step away from the light (and we see him step out of frame ) and the start of an episode being the magic show Scorsese narrates that happens to be something Marcus is watching. Refreshing stuff.

I think that this is one of the only seasons of television that actually commits to portraying the characters in the emotional place they're actually in for as long as they need to or would actually be in such place. To me it felt like they didn't shy away from the depth and duration of the feelings just to make the season more appealing to watch. It felt kida stuck, sluggish. So did the characters, so did I. Made sense, I do'nt know. It felt like the best way to truly make the viewer experience what the characters were going through. Thought it was brilliantly done.

Season 3 is my actual favorite season. I know people didn't love it, but like...the tension in every episode this season was actually palpable if you put yourself in it. Its not exciting, it's not even really dramatic. But it was tense. And the fact that the main character arc was for the restaurant itself was crazy.
I feel like the theme of this season is everyone getting stuck. Carmy is stuck with self destruction, Richie is stuck with loneliness, Sydney is stuck with two options, Marcus is stuck with his month’s passing…. And that’s what the season literally is. It’s stuck. Cannot move forward, full of flashbacks, keep repeating itself… in a way I almost think is deliberate. It frustrates the audience. Just like the characters are frustrated by themselves
Way I see it, season 1 is about finding yourself in the chaos others left behind and dreaming of something better. Season 2 is about making that dream a reality. Lots of movies and shows are based on these kinds of things because that's fun to watch. But season 3 is about living out the dream you had. It's about what happens when you get what you want, when you've made the sacrifices, and you are stuck in the day to day trudge of keeping the dream alive. It's in its very nature boring. Not excusing it, cause i didn't love this season like i did the first two. But i totally agree that in retrospect, we need this so we can get to whatever is next.
I think the Faks are very relevant to the story in sn 3, especially the idea of haunting which applies to pretty much every character in a different way. They're also on the extreme end of the "life" spectrum, if we think of Joel McHale's character as being on the extreme end of the "work" spectrum
Season 3 is like one big freeze response with outbreaks of fight while meanwhile you're living your dream and are in love with a fantastic woman and you can't feel any of it because you're not just depressed, you have PTSD, and you probably always have because your mother seems to be battling borderline personality disorder. I expect Carmy to be doing Ayahausca trips and Feldenkrais sessions in se04e01 so he can land in his own life and feel the fkng thing and with Clairebear by ep 10 :)
For this season and the second season, I have been in Europe on vacation and have had to wait for weeks before I can watch it back in the states. I’m sitting in an airport now just thirsting for the bear
The only thing that bothered me is the Fakks
I truly think a lot of people hated Claire back in season two because a lot of them were shipping Carmy and Syd together, for whatever reason, so Claire was an obstacle between them
One of my only complaints on this season was the song that played throughout the entirety of episode 1. When it started playing again at the beginning of the last episode I was like “NO YOU HAVE OUTSTAYED YOUR WELCOME”
I enjoyed season 3 just because I am a pretty big fan in general. But it felt like nothing happened until the last 2 episodes. Every episode felt like one long dialogue, which they were able to pull of in the first two seasons but felt a little stale this time. I still enjoyed, just a little let down I guess.
Season 4 better bring it otherwise the show is dead.
I actually really enjoyed this season. I do feel like there is some unnecessary hate. There are flaws, but a show can’t be completely perfect, ya know? And season 2 was gonna be hard to top.

Me personally I always viewed the bear like the whiplash but for chefs/people who love cooking and NGL it’s a neat comparison cause both question if sacrificing is worth perfectionism which is why I love the bear 🗿🗣️
The time dilation here is incredibly jarring in a way I really understood. I wouldn't say I enjoyed it, but I felt it and I remember those dark times. I think that's important to understand because this show very much operates in using the actual medium to illicit the emotions of the narrative.
