There are five 5 vowels in English. But there more than 20 vowel sounds in English language. Vowels have both short and long sounds. Short sounds are the one which we learn while learning phonics. Short sound of a as in cat, Short sounds of e as in pet etc. Vowels also have long sound. Long sound is vowels are vowel name itself. When we read a as a as in cake , we say vowel a is taking its name. similarly e as in these, I as in kite etc are the examples of long vowel sound words.
