This is the type of town you move to when you running from something or someone. There are a million little town like this in Texas with small population. Sierra Blanca is real close to the Mexico border & not to far from El Paso! So if you looking for peace & quiet this is your place!
If I was on the run and trying to hide, especially if the law was involved, this is the last place I would want to be, with a population of only 550 and everyone knows everyone ... you would stick out like a turd in a punch bowl, and people including local law enforcement may get nosey ....
Welcome!!! Lived all over Texas, all my life. Born in Texarkana, then El. Paso, Houston, Sherman, Kaufman, Dallas. But, I've finally found a place I love. 35 miles sw of Ft. Worth. My little town has 1100 people. I can see the stars at night, & the town closes at 10 PM, except for 1 convenience store, open 24 hours. Love your videos.
Thank you for posting this. I was JUST there this past Memorial Weekend on my way to Guadalupe Peak and stayed at the Americana Inn right off the access road of I-10 next to the Exxon. What a quaint little town, it was very quiet. The hotel itself is quite basic, yet clean and absolutely friendly Manager (I believe his name was Franco). I was trying to explain to my daughter what the town looked like as I only saw it when I arrived in the evening and left before sun rise (which by the way was AMAZING!!!) I'm an educated individual who is in the process of living the simple life. I'm so grateful to have come across this video. I work remotely and this is absolutely a place I'd love to explore for a couple of months that's not as 'close" to a new city yet far away to appreciate the stillness and quiet away from the hustle and bustle. and the HUGE plus?! You're only about one hour away from Guadalupe Peak and El Capitan. Wish i knew someone in real estate regarding renting there.
I visit Sierra Blanca for work each year and find the west Texas life style real and refreshing. The rugged terrain is rich with life and opportunity if you just look around. The Walker family who have had a huge influence on Hudspeth county history for years is one of the nicest group I have ever met and the hardest working family I've ever seen. A really great place and not that far from El Paso.
Wow, Charlie. This is a pretty big departure from your usual features - and I loved every minute of it. Such a serene, peaceful vibe here and beautiful scenery. I've always been a small town kid and Sierra Blanca here is definitely the kind of place I'd like to wind up at. Did a little reading up on Sierra Blanca and it's an incredible snapshot into small town life. For instance, the town has a population of just 553 (2010 census) and the high school you passed on the right at 4:53 is a K-12 school that graduated a senior class of about a dozen. And the little 260 seat, single screen State Theater movie house that you passed on the left at 0:39, while closed since 1986 (opened in 1952), on the inside, is darn near pristine - looks like it might have closed a week or two ago instead of 33 years ago. Absolutely breathtaking. The State Theater also holds the distinction of being the last remaining movie house build of adobe. Also, the road you entered town on is part of just the 2nd trans-continental highway, pre-dating Route 66 by 4-5 years - it used to be "US-80" and I believe it was completed in either 1921 or 1922. Also, to your left at 4:11, Google maps lists that little dirt path as "Main St." for some reason - possibly an early alignment of the original "US 80" ? Thanks for the little detour off the beaten path - loved it. :)
