Experience the New Generation Silent Bass from Yamaha in the hands of the greats: Charley Sabatino, Kenny Davis, Jim Widner, Chris Minh Doky, and Nathan East.
I do not know how did they make such an instrument. Some electric upright basses sound like fretless bass guitars, but with discomfort of bigger instrument. The silent bass sounds like a real double bass but without being bulky and unwieldly like an old double bass. The sound it produces is convincing and it almost had taken the breath from me.
I just got my SLB300 to fulfill a need to play smaller environments for pandemic/space restrictions in restaurants. I use to take my Upton Brescian bass to this very small restaurant and it was a nightmare in keeping it safe. Now the marketing around this bass is very convincing and its tempting to see this as the solution to all our dreams. I have previous owned an Eminence and Kolstein smaller travel bass to get around taking my main bass out to hostile gigs and environments. I can sum this SLB300 bass up by saying that its like taking a decent Honda car to get you to your destination as opposed to a BMW, both will get you there but not in the same comfort. The SLB300 is not the end all bass of my gig dreams. The G and D strings lack the balance and power of the E and A string. The modeling is always mixed with the piezo and the sound gets very weak in the upper register. The action is high even with the adjusters low. The strings that came with it are too dull for jazz, I put my old spiros on it to get some punch. But at the end of the night nobody knows the difference, even my piano player. Packing up is a dream and it might be the whole deal here. I am still looking into tweaking the sound and action and at the end of the day happy I have this thing.
@@azaamusic7593 the mic models are some voodoo propriety samples that don't really sound that convincing...still need the old piezos to cut it through the mix
@@hs5942 I mean, 5-strings aren't that uncommon in orchestras, but I think 4-strings with a low-C extension are more usual. That said, orchestras often use 7/8 or 4/4 basses specifically to have that extra bottom end resonance
Question: Does a silent bass function like a keyboard as far as plugging in some headphones and practicing silently? I live in an apartment, can only practice at home (COVID sucks!), and acoustic is too loud. Please help!
Great work. But I wish I could buy lefty version of that bass. After 2 months I'll get right handed one and transform to lefty. I hope I'll be succesful.
Just bought a slb 300. A fine bass that sound really great for an eub, but Im struggling with the noisy preamp. Are you going to fix this on an update soon, Yamaha? For now I use a noise gate, but its still noisy as hell when its on. Also wondering why you went for a AA-battery alternative while 9v works many times longer. Is has been out for a few years now, so this shouldnt be news to you.
Konichiva. Unfortunately there is no left hand version of that bass. Also Yamaha has NO SUPPORT at any trouble. So? What we have to do? I asked yesterday abouut producing lefty Pro madel. I was told Pro model is stooped . What a pity.
I got to meet Jim Widner at a Jazz camp he was hosting and he uses the electric upright for most of his traveling needs though these other bassists especially Nathan East seem to use whatever fits depending on the record. I imagine if you want a genuine upright sound you would just go for an upright but this seems to be the bass to use when using a genuine upright isn't feasible or too expensive and it seems to do its job very well. and if you're a bassist who uses lots of pedals or effects I'd assume this would also be a great option.
@@chrispile3878 Disagree. It can be deceptive and devious. People who endorse products purely for financial gain (when often never using them) are assholes. We see it time and again in the world of music. If it’s an honest unbiased opinion then they should declare it. If these guys are being paid (so often exaggerate and lie about the product) then it should be declared. In the USA deceptive marketing is absolutely normal. In the UK we have The Advertising Standards Authority who are quite a powerful government backed organisation.
Congrats, you’re watching a literal ad and getting angry about how it’s an ad. Did your government have to tell you not to eat paint, too? Seems like you didn’t listen.

seems like all youd want to use is the mic models ....
Nice to hear some intelligent opinions for a change. Thanks

We know anything about how this video is produced and how the sound taken. But what a killer sound Jim has during the walking
WOW Fantastic sound, looks very light weight too.
It drives me nuts that they haven't made a 5 string version
Low b wont even be audible on upright bass

Nathan, what an idol of mines!
Nathan East ❤️
great video
nathan east has incredibly intonation on the upright wtf
I like the sound of electric upright better than the normal mumbling acoustic double bass
Amazing!
Is it worth it? Considering getting one but they are pricy

no reason you couldn't, it has a 1/4 input so you could plug headphones in an amp to use an audio interface

Are any of these artists or other pros using the SLB300 as their main bass or their main travel bass now?

Only when they think Yamaha are watching I suspect.
one of these things is not like the others...
Indeed
?
Yamaha we need answers as to why this thing HISSES .... LISTEN it is right there at the top of the video ....
I just played one last night...no noticeable hiss. Might be the video.
It's your internet device.
No, I have the slb 300, and the thing hiss like crazy. Its unbelievable that a huge company like Yamaha leaves this untouched.
FAB!
Anyone compared that bass with 300 PRO? Is there big difference? They have 1000 euro difference. Im getting confused
Some Yamaha silent instruments have to much problems in pré amp and power suply
Left hand versions or can it convert?
But what's it called?
Would Yamaha like to publish exactly what payment or gifts these musicians are receiving for promoting their product? I suspect not.
It's none of our business. I have a 1st gen Silent steel string guitar, and it's amazing. This should be just as amazing, and it sounds like it is.

Que bajo tenes?
Hmmmmm………the sound really comes from your hands . …not the electronics
Its impossible
it sounds too “piezo”!!!
These guys are not endorsed by Yamaha at all so it must be real
Nathan is since he was a kid.
*NS DESIGN has entered the chat.*
Different animal and not of interest to the upright purists.
Probably not suitable for orchestral players.
