- Uncover the incredible story of Private John Steele, the iconic D-Day paratrooper, in this gripping UA-cam Shorts! A member of the 82nd Airborne Division, Steele found himself in a harrowing situation on the night of June 6, 1944, during the D-Day invasion.
As two planeloads of paratroopers were mistakenly dropped over the well-lit and heavily occupied French town of Sainte-Mère-Église, Steele's parachute miraculously caught on the church tower pinnacle. Hanging limply for two hours, he pretended to be dead until the Germans discovered him and took him prisoner. Steele managed to escape four hours later, rejoining his division during the US attack on the village, capturing 30 Germans and killing 11.
Sainte-Mère-Église became the first village liberated by the US Army on D-Day. Throughout his life, Steele continued to visit the town and was honored as an honorary citizen. He received the Bronze Star for valor and the Purple Heart for his wounds in combat. Subscribe for more captivating stories of bravery and resilience!
