How often do we say that addicts can't make a rational decision because their physiology is altered by substance abuse, and now they're letting the same people make literally the decision that will have the biggest impact on their life? 90 days is no where near long enough for majority of addicts to clean themselves.
Whoever came up with this idea has no moral fibre.

Slippery slope: life is only worth living if you’re not suffering. If we think that way, we not only excuse our own self destruction but end up justifying the forcible elimination of undesirables. And it’s what is happening here. The health system can’t support the medical needs of the population so the government has found the final solution.

A lot of drug addicts have mental illness and depression in itself leads to drug addiction. How can someone that’s not ok decide what happens to them if they have lost control of themselves.. coming from addiction all I have to say is it gets better and you are worth it even if you don’t think so.

I work with folks with addictions and severe mental illnesses (often times concurrently). I also struggle with my own mental illnesses and have friends and family members struggling with mental illness alongside addictions too.
My issue with this conversation is the emphasis on no physical ailments and only mental. Often times mental illnesses impact your physical health too and even if someone doesn't have something physical like debilitating pain disorders or deformations doesn't mean they don't feel physical pain. Many individuals with addictions and mental illness also have physical conditions that are influenced or even caused their mental illness or addiction in the first place. All the people I work with have physical ailments alongside their mental illness and addiction so you can't say it's just mental. It becomes the egg versus the chicken issue. Did those health issues lead the person to debilitating depression and addiction or vice versa?
I'm on the fence about this. I'm all about body autonomy and see how painful and traumatic a life with addiction can be (it often interplays into housing and food instability that further adds onto the pain). When my clients say they want to die... I don't want them to but I also don't really blame them because they often have years of abuse, no positive supports, multiple overdoses that lead to more serious health issues and are treated like shit by any kind of possible health and mental health supports because of prejudice and stigma. However, I don't think it should ever be presented to someone or done in a way that makes it easy to access.
I don't think 90 days is enough time to give it time to consider. I feel like it should be years and with wrap around supports to help the person with their addiction and pain to see if they have that support if they will feel differently and change their mind. They should always be given wrap around supports to prevent people from getting to the point where they just rather die.

As someone who was severely depressed to the point of wanting to die, it does get better. I have clinical depression and every once in a while I get in those low moods thinking that if my life doesn't get better in x amount of years I'm just going to take myself out early than live the rest of my life miserable. I have to remind myself it's my brain and not my actual thoughts although that's easier said than done because even though you're aware, the thoughts still seem very real. I think the majority of us at some point in our lives want to unalive ourselves including myself. The fact that there is a waiting period makes this okay in my mind. My neighbor OD in the apartment below me. His body was there for two days. He planned it apparently. I think a situation like that is / could be more traumatizing than if it was done in an office.

On one hand, I think this should be an option for those who genuinely need it. On the other hand, I do not think this service should ever be taken lightly. I don't know how the whole process works, but most people suffering from suicidal thoughts do come out of them and tend to be grateful they didn't follow through with anything. It should be months, if not a year plus of meetings with a psychologist before people get signed off on this, and imo, there should be an option to have some sort of grief counseling for the family to help process the situation, also to give input incase there is a history of other mental health issues at play that could affect the individuals ability to give full consent. I really hope it doesn't just get used as a way to not deal with societal issues and actually helping people.

I definitely believe in medically assisted suicide for those suffering through untreatable tremendous physical pain but for addiction and depression thats insane. especially only a 90 day waiting period, like if it did exist, for mental issues it should be years not months. there are literal proven pathways to a better life whether its medical or neurological, narcotic induced, or having a strong support system. this is not the way.

When it was determined that she couldn't be resuscitated, someone from the medical examiner's office had to come and officially declare her as deceased, and the cops had to stay on the scene till the medical examiner arrived. Her family was with her in the house the whole time. And after the medical examiner left, the guy from the funeral home arrived to remove her from the house to take her body to the funeral home.

I agree with bart and the guests, which is how subin got out his funk-gotta have the person do it themselves and beforehand gotta actually live life or in bart’s words go through a bounce house tunnel lol. I think most people who are suicidal need to shake up their world so they can experience their potential in life (though, that’s challenging because it’ll be case by case or group it based on personality types), and I mean actually feel the possibility of living differently than they currently are..of course, I also understand there will be a couple of us just not meant to live long (for various reasons aside from terminally ill conditions) and again I still argue they need to commit the deed themselves. I do propose, however, that they get their shit in order first. No one needs to grieve the loss of a friend/family/lover and also figure out the logistics or where and how to take care of the remains (body) and belongings. Its stressful (talking from personal experience though my dear loved one died from medical issues, not suicide, AND from experience of dear friends who’ve committed suicide).
I read some comments that mentioned its traumatic to find a dead body, to which I agree and if it helps to have a safe place to end things so be it. I just believe people need to get their affairs in order and be the one that finishes their final chapter.
