    Today we're going to cover all the reasons why it does, and why it doesn't - in a top down, nitpicky, overly lengthy analysis of the first season. Relax and enjoy!

    The lack of focus on usopp during his own arc and the handling of arlong park were two of my biggest issues with this adaptation and you nail it on the head the reasons why. Great review!

    It's more explicitly laid out in the manga that Luffy's real reason for destroying Nami's room is because he's trying to destroy the product/memories of Nami's abuse. And if you've already read the manga I could see how you'd think that that wouldn't be clear to a new viewer. But I still think it's pretty obvious. If my first exposure to One Piece was the live action, I'm sure I would still pick up on that. Luffy does it right after looking at the chains, and then us being shown the flashback, etc.
    Also something no one's mentioned yet: they never explain how Morgans supposedly captured Kuro but then Kuro is still alive! Like what? That's a straight up plot hole, no?

    • @SolitaryLark
      @SolitaryLark 9 місяців тому +17

      That’s not a plot hole. They explained and showed that Morgan was corrupt and a liar. The assumption in the LA I suppose is that Kuro simply tricked him or Morgan made the claim for no real reason but arrogance.

      this kinda bugs me. a major complaint that I keep seeing is that they're too explicit with all of the messages, but in the one scene where they kind of let you figure out the reasoning for yourself everybody says it wasn't spelled out enough lol

    I will say on the criticism of why Buggy doesn't just separate when tied up, to me this is forgivable b/c even in the manga/anime Nami just ties up all his body parts. We've seen that Buggy can separate himself to basically particle size pieces in Marine Ford vs Mihawk so there isn't really a reason why Nami tying him up would actually work in the original version. So since this is a logical inconsistency in the source material I just let it slide.

    • @ManOfTheWeek596
      @ManOfTheWeek596 9 місяців тому +5

      Buggy can only control his body a certain radius around his head, and he can't make his feet fly, his power is explained in detail during impel down. So as long as you keep his severed bodyparts far enough away he is helpless

    • @MrRubix01
      @MrRubix01 9 місяців тому +4

      @ManOfTheWeek596 I'm well aware of how Buggys power works. None of what you describe explains why Buggy couldn't separate his bodies further to escape being tied up when we've seen him separate into very tiny pieces during marine ford.

    • @MrRubix01
      @MrRubix01 9 місяців тому +4

      @lavallur no my friend, you are still not understanding the situation. We are talking about in the live action when Arlong ties up Buggy and interrogates him. He has all his parts and can therefore separate. My initial point was that even though this is technically a plot hole I let it slide b/c even in the anime they have this same plot hole. During the fight with luffy, Nami ties up his parts with some rope, which stops him from recompleting himself. Which doesn't make much sense b/c he wasn't far from his parts and should be able to separate more to escape them, since during Marine Ford we saw he can separate into basically small particles when he had to avoid Mihawks slash.
      Hopefully that makes sense

    About luffy going straight for the devil fruit, there's a scene earlier where one of shanks' crew almost drops the box with the fruit and shanks says something on the lines of "this thing is worth more than the rest combined". Luffy hears this and thinks that if he eats the fruit, HE will become worth so much that shanks is forced to take him to the sea. He says as much in a later scene. Does feel like a better reason than "I ate the fruit for dessert" that he comes up with in the manga.

  • @VancePants07
    @VancePants07 9 місяців тому +40

    The reason Luffy picked the gum gum chest and the reason he ate it is because he heard Shanks comment to ‘not drop it cause its worth alot’ to Lucky Roux. Luffy even comments how he ate Shanks most expensive treasure. And it makes sense why it is such a treasure with the context of Nika now.
    Your points on Arlong Park were right on. Nami/Emily killed the “help me” scene but the payoff wasn’t the same for me.
    The only other negative that bugged me was Mihawk instant transmissioning to Baratie, how’d he even know Luffy was there.

    • @Lumpyrox1412
      @Lumpyrox1412 9 місяців тому +7

      To conjure an explanation for Mihawk, if you were hunting Garp’s grandson, you absolutely know where to guess first. They love their food. It’s also like a tavern of sorts, and that’s where people gather to socialise so you’d be able to ask around for a straw hat pirate.

    • @VancePants07
      @VancePants07 9 місяців тому +4

      @@Lumpyrox1412 Tru it makes more sense if you consider Baratie to be a popular well known destination, which it is deffs more so in the Live Action. I was still thinkin it's a place you'd luck into finding like the manga.

    If Morgan was like in the manga, it would've set really bad expectations for the series.
    Having the first villain be so absolutely evil that he goes beyond the limits of "so evil it's goofy" was bad even for the manga, tbh. Way, way over the top, and in live action it would've been even worse.
    I get that it's a negative for people who want most things 1:1 with the manga, and I get it, but personally I think the live action change for Morgan was for the better. He came across as a very strict, egotistical and corrupt marine, and you really didn't need much more than that.
    I do think, however, that there should've been a few more scenes of him belittling his own son to get across the idea that he really was a piece of shit, tho.

But in the live action there is a room filled with treasures that isn’t guarded by atleast one person or being checked on, also if he found the fruit gross why did he finish eating it? In the manga he doesn’t eat the whole fruit and lastly (probably the funniest) luffy as a kid is black/white mix with no accent then he grows up and becomes Mexican with an accent?

    1:13:49 the map room looks like part of an attic they just left Nami in. Like a dog they want to potty train before letting roam free in the house.
    In my opinion, the show effectively conveyed the emotions needed. Again, without anything to compare with? I was wildly invested throughout the whole fight. Just on the edge of my seat, mate. Luffy’s horror at Nami’s imprisonment was clear. I was grinning while Luffy made Arlong destroy himself in response.
    His original reasoning does add a lot of sentiment, I do agree there. Just think of it as something people like me get to be surprised and moved by for the first time, just like you did. While reading it. Or watching the anime. In fact, that’s how I feel many of your complaints could be, with all due respect, countered with.
    My question is how well did the scene work as a climax for the story told in the live action? Divorced from how it could’ve been in your expectations.
    The anime and manga are better at telling the story overall. No denying it. Manga’s the medium Oda in mind while telling the story. Anime is a mostly faithful retelling. If you’d never experienced either first, would your feelings still be as negative? I didn’t find the repetition of “of course I will” to be corny, personally. The whole scene felt so intense to me.
    No shade tossing from me. Your feelings are as valid as mine. I can’t help but feel a lot of your criticisms are personal expectation based. Which is completely fair. I know I’ve felt the same about, say, Batman or Spider-Man live action adaptations.
    I didn’t really like Toby’s Spider-Man. As I rewatched I realized the jokes just weren’t there. No Way Home Toby feels like how the nostalgia glasses make us remember him. That’s a Tony Spidey I would want more of. Same for the Keaton Batman films. Loved them at the time. Now I’m mostly disappointed. Joker murdered the Waynes? Tim Burton’s Batman straight up killed people. Cat-Woman made no sense. She survived plummeting into an alleyway filled with a bunch of cats and then she’s got, what? Cat powers? Looked like some kinda magical transformation happened with her. Not inspiration like with Bruce and the bat. I liked Penguin more as a cultured criminal. Not sewer penguin Tarzan.
    Still, divorced from my wants and desires lies Tim Burton movies from his prime. They’re objectively good. I can’t deny it. They’re not for me any longer. Genuinely loved them as a child. However, I’m happy Batman the Animated Series was made because of them. That’s still as great as I remembered. Better even.
    …I went on a bat-tangent. Again. Ha ha! Great review. Subscribed.

    I think they could’ve maybe had Zoro witness Sham and Buchi bring Merry to the well and then he follows them there and they have a fight scene where he gets pushed in and hits his head really hard or something. They’ll think they’ve killed him but he’s so tough it wasn’t a problem. That would’ve made the Black Cat Pirates look less stupid and Zoro seem more observant and also more strong.

    I wanted to defend Luffy being hurt by Arlong's punches with the faint memory of fishman karate being able to strike devil fruit users due to shock waves traveling through their body's water content. However this is just a specific named attack named "Samegawara Seiken" and to my knowledge Arlong doesn't even use fishman karate, he just uses certain moves that are similar. That was indeed a big blunder. What they could have done if they didn't want Arlong to use his nose, teeth and sword for some reason is just to retcon him using a move similar to Samegawara Seiken.

  • @Bador
    @Bador 2 місяці тому

    Its way too late for this comment, but they originally wanted to do 10 episodes but had to slim down to 8. The Arlong vs Luffy fight for example was planned as much longer with luffy actually using his fishnet attack and dodging arlongs blade.
    They also planned a big fight with zoro and hatchan, where they would fight in the basement and hatchan would fight from the ceiling. They had some plans for a rotating camera.
    Good video tho! Iam really curious on how they going to powerscale the crew up. Because if they want to do the big moments in alabasta justice, zoro for example need to tank more then a bottle to the head.

    I just finished the Live Action. I pretty much agree with most of what you said. What bothered me was Zoros "Youre not my boss" thing in the first few episodes which is a bit meh. He seemed more loyal in the original where hes just like "Aight fuck it you saved my life, might as well make the best of it".
    And also its a bit sad that some side characters were dropped or reduced but I can understand that they obviously couldnt fit in all characters. I think its a bit sad that Nami was reduced to the "actually hated one" in her village whereas in the original everyone knew she was collecting 100million but pretended they didnt know in order to not put any pressure on her.
    Also sadge that we didnt see Yosaku and Johny.
    Overall I was still rooting for the strawhats tho. The changes they introduced made me excited to see how it would continue. A complete 1:1 copy wouldve certainly not felt that exciting

    59:00 The reason Luffy picked that specific chest is that Luffy was on the ship when Shanks told Lucky Rou not to drop it as it was worth a lot more than everything else there. So Luffy probably opened it out of curiosity to see what could be such a great treasure in a such a small box.

    This is a minor correction that doesn't matter to your critique (which I agree with heavily in regards to the blue soup, and Usopp screentime, and especially with all the Arlong Park stuff, and you didn't even mention the worst bit where they completely rewrote Nojiko's character just to make Nami feel more completely on her own before meeting Luffy and joining the Strawhats when, if she doesn't have that honest emotional connection to her sister who knows the truth all those years why does she even give a shit about the village aaaahh) but the Baratie arc in the live action is not longer because they stay overnight, it's shorter. Luffy's attempt to recruit Sanji is one of the few times the manga explicitly slows down. They loiter at the restaurant for two full days in the manga, four days in the anime! The biggest plot hole in the East Blue is how Zeff didnt go bankrupt/Luffy didnt starve to death in the interim.
    But yeah. 5 or 6 good episodes was 5 or 6 more than I could have hoped for, and Orange Town/Buggy was immaculate, so I'm looking forward to season 2!

  • @Vordt_

    Inaki's take on Luffy definitely doesn't play into the "Luffy is an 8 year old in the body of a 20 year old" vibe that he gives off in the other versions. I think he's a lot more of a "I'm slightly autistic and don't know social queues or personal space but am just vibin and having a good time." sorta vibe? In a good way. The scene with him and Nami with the safe where he tries to listen to her crack the code is a perfect example I think. I hope he plays more into the childish mentality luffy has overall but i am not holding my breath.
    I also think the delivery of some lines by Sanji's kid version was, extremely bad. After Zeff's reveal of his missing leg, his line "You ate your own leg?!" is just, delivered in such a way that is so fucking funny to me because of the accent.
    I was watching the first few episodes with family friends and they thought Shanks had a DF because he wasnt swimming. I explained it was something else, a power unrelated that isnt explained for a while, but i just realized how fucking right you are about him not swimming being so important.

    Off the top of my head theres like atleast one in every movie plus Brooke's concert, Franky uses a microphone and amp and Queen literally raps.. in his way... but hes clearly more influenced by modern music than anything from the real pirate era...

    59:05 Luffy says later the Gum-Gum fruit was the most valuable treasure Shanks had. Since he ate it? That made HIM Shanks’ most valuable treasure. The reason Luffy ate the fruit was to basically a mix of spite and hope. He overheard Shanks say how valuable that treasure was. So he had a legitimate reason to go after that particular box.

    I feel like 1 thing that's missing is you know how in the anime they would have a scene like with shanks giving luffy the hat and then the "camera" pulls back to show a wider frame with a "don" effect. I'm not sure that straight up works 1-to-1 in a live action, but the adaptation could benefit from some equivalent to that

    1:11:15 absolutely makes sense her turnaround. Nami has been given hope. She’s got people with her. They didn’t have enough time to include Nami in other ways. Adding her to the Walk was economical and made no difference to me as a new viewer. She didn’t feel out of place, is what I mean. In fact, I kinda wish she had originally made the walk with them. I only thought about it after the fact of seeing the anime and live action. At the time I was too busy bawling my eyes out and cheering as the men walked to the park, while those two bounty hunters talked them up like proto Bartolomeos.

    I really don’t like how ussop doesn’t really do anything in syrup village. He saves kaya once by shooting kuros hand but that’s it. He didn’t even try to hit his head. Then with the stuff with the marines right after, ussop can’t even load the canon.
    It makes Luffy seem even stupider than usual getting this random guy who can’t do anything at all on the crew. And I don’t think he ever mentions being a brave warrior or anything like that.

    They could very well still do Garp's introduction in Water 7 the same as how it was done originally except for the original four straw hats are freaking out by hearing a very distinct ogre-esque shouting from outside followed by Garp proceeding to blow the wall down and the introduction ensues with the live actions interpretation of how it would play out

    I feel like the writers have more of an opportunity to delve into Luffy's psychology on a deeper level and I want them to take full advantage of that opportunity rather than just skirt pass all that nuance. Like when Nami confronts Luffy and tells him about how captains have to make the hard choices or whatever I love Inaki's response "Why does everyone keep telling me that?" It's so sincere. So pure. Like he genuinely is missing the point. Nami continues and tells him that he let Zoro almost die for the sake of his dream and Luffy of course sticks to his ideology of never getting in the way of others ambitions. Of course, this has consequences. Grave ones. And that is what I want. I want consequences for thinking like Luffy. Thinking like a Shonen protagonist. I don't like how Garp just accepts Luffy's choice to be a pirate. People are who they are but he is dedicated to his job however goofy he might be. Garp would never accept something like that. He'd be happy Luffy is his own man but would not cease pursuing him relentlessly because he is on the wrong side of the law.

    16:47 I’m gonna say the close ups are meant to invoke the manga. A lot of time dialogue is given just like that in comics overall. Not only manga. To be honest? I just rewatched the first episode with a buddy last night. Still didn’t have issues with the close ups. Never knew people complained about them until watching OP fan reviews. I myself only caught up to the manga because I saw the live action. That was my first exposure to the franchise. Loads of new reactors and reviewers didn’t seem to comment on the close ups one way or the other
    I saw the LA at the end of last Nov. Immediately started the anime, dubbed (it was great, the Funimation actors did fantastic work) until there wasn’t any more episodes of that. Then I continued with the sub. I love both casts and think they’re excellent for different reasons. Been weekly there since end of Jan. So I read the manga from the start. My first actual One Piece cliffhanger just so happens to be a freaking break period. Ha ha! Meaning I’m up to date as of the beginning of March. I’m about to experience weekly OP for the first time during Egghead!
    Anyway, my tangent aside, I think most new fans don’t mind the close ups. We’re too caught up in an unknown story. People familiar with One Piece may have time to consider more of the visuals. Some undoubted will have relatively negative opinions.

    1:08:56 now these I feel like are not good criticisms making complaints about it not being 1to1 is just not useful. The taking his teeth out to use as weapons would just not work in live action. The nose things similarly just doesn’t fit. More water things certainly would have been nice but that would have been rough on the budget.

  • @michaelpapp5518

    1:10:00 strong disagree. The scene worked so well. Luffy places the hat on first Nani’s noggin, then takes a second to say “of course I will.” I felt like that was a deeply moving moment. Nami still has time to realize what Luffy entrusted her with. So to did we in the audience. Tears. Just tears as Luffy’s passion to protect his friend grows, until he’s shouting it for the world to hear.
    Your expectations and comparisons understandably color your opinion here. The moment as it was drawn clearly hit hard for you. It’s fair to feel disappointed if you’re hoping for a more accurate adaptation. Personally? I’m annoyed the scene takes place at night. I wish it were the day like in the anime. It looked too dark, like much of modern cinema.

    1:00:11 🤓 um, actually 😂 there's a part where Luffy is watching Shanks and crew unloading the treasure that they undoubtedly just finished stealing from Who's-Who, and as Lucky Rou has his arms full and about drops the jewelry box the Gum-Gum fruit is in, Shanks catches it and says it's by far the most valuable piece of treasure of the haul since it's a Devil Fruit, and that he wouldn't drop it if it were a chicken leg, so I'm assuming in Luffy being mad and storming off he recognizes that box and as a way to get back at Shanks since he's a kid and don't know no better ate it and ta-da? I'm not saying it's good but that's what I understood that whole interaction as

    About Arlong’s theme, I really wonder if they were intentionally using trap/hip-hop for the whole “racism” undertone. Not to say it was a song but if that was their only reason I think the show would be better without it.
    Also, wasn’t Papagu the starfish guy like a DJ/fashion designer? One Piece is centuries behind on technology but I think they could probably have dubstep or hip hop.

    DONT READ MY COMMENT HAS SPOILERS. I think roger ate the gonu gomu no mi fruit and nika rejected him and that is why he got sick and died. And before he died he told shanks to find the fruit when it revives itself and to give it to the real joy boy that is why shanks had it. But i also believe that the devil fruit are reincarnated souls trying to achieve their dreams and its not the sea making them drown but being cursed to the depths of hell. I also think roger turned evil and came back as fruit and is like a god like nika and that is the man on fire

    Hey hidden, been a fan since the very first "devil Fruit origin" theory you posted. Been looking forward to more theories from you but your channel has been quite dry on theory content as of late. Are there any theories in the works? Not trying to beg for content or anything but brother I am starving for a well crafted 20+ minute video with half decent headcannon. Been so tired of the theory videos where they just say completely out of left field shit like "Rob lucci could be a member of the blackbeard pirates!!!??!?!?" Theories that have no substance/no real chance of happening in the story are boring and I think that you have NEVER once put out a theory that felt anywhere close to the trash I am used to . Much love hidden hope you get around to posting some more good content big dog I miss it.
